Full textThis paper reviews election films of Swedish political parties to analyze whether their meansof conviction takes a form of storytelling rather than factual. The election films that are objectsfor the analysis are those of Socialdemokraterna (Social Democratic Party), Moderaterna(Moderates), Sverigedemokraterna (Sweden Democrats) and Miljöpartiet (Green Party) from2014 as well as from 2018. The analysis departs from a qualitative textual analysis and usesdevices of rhetorical, semiotic and most of all narrative to elucidate the means of convictionthat are found on a multi mediated level. Through a clarifying of discourse for the electionyears of 2014 and 2018 a course of change can be identified in the election films relation to itstime. This analysis is done within the theoretical field of political communication. This study asks: (1) how does political parties in Sweden use storytelling in their electionfilms and (2) what means of conviction are used in the election films? and (3) what change canbe seen in the election films between 2014 and 2018 and (4) does the contextual setting affectthe political communication of the political parties from 2014 to 2018? From this frame ofquestioning these election films are analyzed by their use of language with rhetorical devices, their use of visual communication with semiotic devices and by applying narrative devices theiruse of storytelling with the means of simplifying, refining and further their conviction. The results of this analysis show how the election films notably use the sense of threatand hope and also a specific image of Sweden that the parties want to present is central to thenarrative that plays out. It can also be said that the films all notably change their communicationfrom 2014 to 2018. The election films from 2018 is longer and does have a harshercommutative tone, specifically in the form of negative campaigning, the use of propaganda, and a more notable separation of right and wrong. This paper gives a first glimpse of howSwedish political communication prefer storytelling before factual means as well as howcontextual settings change the form of Swedish political communication.

Full textThis study focuses on how the Left Party and the Sweden Democrats constructed one of their election films for the 2018 election. The purpose of the study is to investigate how visual and rhetorical means are used and collaborate, as well as how each party's ideology is clarified. This is done to explain what message and what image of reality that are being sent out when the parties themselves control the political communication. To be able to understand how the electoral films have been constructed, semiotics, rhetoric, and ideology are used both as theory and method because these, in combination with each other, can give a coherent result. The study's analysis implementation is based on concepts derived from semiotics, rhetoric, and ideology in combination with qualitative text analysis. With help from the qualitative text analysis, a close reading of the text was first made to be able to find the most important aspects of each election films, leading to the hidden constructed meanings. The result of the analysis shows that with the help of semiotic and rhetorical means, the Left Party's election film constructs a reality that consists of a divided society, but also how this split can be overcome jointly. The message is hopeful and forward-looking. The Left Party's socialist values are also clear in the election film. The Swedish Democrats' election film paints a reality that is chaotic, dark and threatening. The message sent out is that the Sweden Democrats and their party leader Jimmie Åkesson are the only ones who can save Sweden from total decay. The Swedish Democrats' election film focuses mainly on issues of fact, but certain nationalist and conservative values emerge.

Full textProblem: 2010 was the first year when the political parties could advertise in Swedish television during an campaign before the election to the Swedish parliament. Therefore, it’s interesting to study how the political ads in television were formulated and which messages they sent to the viewers. Question at issues: The main study was concentrated on how the political parties formulated their messages. Other research questions were about differences and similarities between the advertisements and if there were differences in presentation and messages between the Alliance and the red-green coalition. Aim: The aim of this study is to illuminate how the political parties formulated their messages in TV-ads. Methodology: Three different methods were used. Two types of visual analysis, movie analysis and image analysis were combined to analyze the visual parts of the ads. The third method was a rhetoric approach to analyze the spoken/written word in the ads. Theoretical Perspective: This study is based on theories concerning political communication in Sweden and USA, advertising and marketing. Empirical foundation: In this study, four political TV-ads from four different parties in the Swedish election 2010 were analyzed; The Moderate party, Christian Democrats, Social Democrats and the Green party. Results: The Swedish political TV-ads do not – contrary to political ads in many other countries – use personal campaigns and theirs political leaders as the main messengers. The ads were similar to each other according to the use of characters and environment in the scenes. The use of music and the use of positive/negative feelings were the things that were the most differentiated between the political ads. The Moderate Party and the Green party were more positive in their messages than the Christian Democrats and Social Democrats were.
