Abstract:
The objective of this study was to validate the shelf-life of marinated and frozen chicken tenderloins. Treatments were randomly assigned to the age of the tenderloins post-harvest, days aged (DA): DA4, DA5, DA6, DA7, and DA8. Microbial analyses were used to analyze the growth of aerobic, psychotropic, and lactobacilli bacteria to assess the shelf-life of bulk-packaged chicken tenderloins. Tenderloins were sampled fresh, then vacuum tumbled in a marinade. After marination, the tenderloins were sampled with the remaining tenderloins packaged and frozen (−25 °C). After freezing the chicken tenderloins were slacked in a refrigerated cooler (2.2 °C) for up to 132 h (h) and sampled at 36 h, then every 24 h following. After marination, each treatment significantly (p < 0.05) decreased in aerobic and psychotropic counts except DA4. During slacking, no treatment crossed the threshold of 106 CFU/mL (Log 6) set for this study. Though none crossed the threshold, treatments DA4, DA5, and DA6 had significant (p < 0.05) increases in aerobic bacteria after 7 days of age. The psychotropic bacteria continuously grew at each sampling period, with DA4 and DA5 surpassing the other treatments (p < 0.05) at 108 h and 132 h reaching 105 CFU/mL. Every treatment remained below the spoilage threshold, suggesting that this method of storage is suitable for chicken tenderloin shelf-life.

Abstract:
Device-assisted therapies (DAT) benefit people with Parkinsons Disease (PwP) but many referrals for DAT are unsuitable or too late, and a screening tool to aid in identifying candidates would be helpful. This study aimed to produce such a screening tool by building a classifier that models specialist identification of suitable DAT candidates. To our knowledge, this is the first objective decision tool for managing DAT referral. Subjects were randomly assigned to either a construction set (n = 112, to train, develop, cross validate, and then evaluate the classifier’s performance) or to a test set (n = 60 to test the fully specified classifier), resulting in a sensitivity and specificity of 89% and 86.6%, respectively. The classifier’s performance was then assessed in PwP who underwent deep brain stimulation (n = 31), were managed in a non-specialist clinic (n = 81) or in PwP in the first five years from diagnosis (n = 22). The classifier identified 87%, 92%, and 100% of the candidates referred for DAT in each of the above clinical settings, respectively. Furthermore, the classifier score changed appropriately when therapeutic intervention resolved troublesome fluctuations or dyskinesia that would otherwise have required DAT. This study suggests that information from objective measurement could improve timely referral for DAT.

Abstract:
SUMMARYIn this study, we assessed the sensitivity, specificity, and diagnostic accuracy of a previously developed direct agglutination test (DAT) using a freeze-dried antigen derived fromLeishmania infantumpromastigotes and composed in a prototype kit for visceral leishmaniasis (VL) diagnosis, named DAT-LPC. To evaluate DAT-LPC reproducibility, the kit was used to analyse 207 serum samples from VL patients and 80 serum samples from patients with other parasitic infections or healthy subjects in four laboratories from different public health institutions in Brazil. DAT-LPC showed sensitivity between 96·2 and 99·5% (P= 0·14), specificity ranging from 96·2 to 97·5% (P= 0·95), and diagnostic accuracy ranging from 96·5 to 99% (P= 0·34). The inter-laboratory reproducibility of qualitative results was classified as excellent (κindex: 0·94–0·97). The reproducibility of the end-titre results in relation to the reference laboratory, ranged from 31 to 85%. These results demonstrate an excellent performance of the DAT-LPC, and validate it for the diagnosis of VL that could replace the immunofluorescent antibody test as the routine diagnostic test in the Brazilian public health system.

The article deals with the quality of data obtained in the quantitative research process. The authors decided to raise the subject, because in the Polish political science – in the opposition to sociology – it’s not well described. The text was made mainly on the basis of a literature review devoted to particular parts of the article and is its synthesis. During the work it was discovered that thanks to relatively simple tools, as well as the use of some programs the quality of the data set can be checked in a simple and precise way.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Little is known of the precise relationship between the expression of disease-related metabolic patterns and nigrostriatal dopaminergic dysfunction in parkinsonism. We studied 51 subjects with Parkinson's disease (PD) (18 non-demented, 24 demented, and 9 dementia with Lewy bodies) and 127 with atypical parkinsonian syndromes (47 multiple system atrophy (MSA), 38 progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), and 42 corticobasal syndrome (CBS)) with 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose PET to quantify the expression of previously validated disease-related patterns for PD, MSA, PSP, and CBS and 18F-fluoropropyl-β-CIT PET to quantify caudate and putamen dopamine transporter (DAT) binding. The patients in each group exhibited significant elevations in the expression of the corresponding disease-related pattern ( p < 0.001), relative to 16 healthy subjects. With the exception of cerebellar MSA (MSA-C), all groups displayed significant reductions in putamen DAT binding relative to healthy subjects ( p < 0.05). Correlations between the dopaminergic and metabolic measures were significant in PD and CBS but not in MSA and PSP. In all patient groups with the exception of MSA-C and CBS, pattern expression values and DAT binding correlated with disease duration and severity measures. The findings suggest that in these parkinsonian disorders, metabolic network expression and DAT binding provide complementary information regarding the underlying disease process.

Abstract:
Dolphin-Assisted Therapies (DAT) are alternative therapies aimed to reduce anxiety levels, stress relief and physical benefits. This paper is focused on measuring and analyzing dolphins brain activity when DAT is taking place in order to identify if there is any differences in female dolphin’s neuronal signal when it is interacting with control or intervention subjects, performing our research in Delfiniti, Ixtapa, Mexico facilities. We designed a wireless and portable electroencephalographic single-channel signal capture sensor to acquire and monitor the brain activity of a female bottle-nose dolphin. This EEG sensor was able to show that dolphin activity at rest is characterized by high spectral power at slow-frequencies bands. When the dolphin participated in DAT, a 23.53% increment in the 12–30 Hz frequency band was observed, but this only occurred for patients with some disease or disorder, given that 0.5–4 Hz band keeps it at 17.91% when there is a control patient. Regarding the fractal or Self-Affine Analysis, we found for all samples studied that at the beginning the dolphin’s brain activity behaved as a self-affine fractal described by a power-law until the fluctuations of voltage reached the crossovers, and after the crossovers these fluctuations left this scaling behavior. Hence, our findings validate the hypothesis that the participation in a DAT of a Patient with a certain disease or disorder modifies the usual behavior of a female bottle-nose dolphin.

Abstract: Scientific investigations, which establish juridical decisions, have acquired a reliable basis due to advances achieved in DNA technology. The tests performed with nucleic acids have presented a positive prove type, thus allowing definitive decisions characters to be established by experts of biological and juridical areas. Formerly the traditional methods of serological types presented important restriction factors, for instance, they didn't have sufficient rates of heterogeneous, polymorphism and specially polishment to include identity or paternity, hence, they conclude clearly only in rare and isolated caseworks, whose the diagnostics were exclusively of exclusion one. The identification ability of DNA tests is extremely precious and particular, which justifies the pioneer name appointed to them, fingerprints DNA. However, there are many aspects to be considered, so that this great improvement doesn't become a villain; especially when consider the super estimation of the real possibilities of these exams. Furthermore, especially in Brazil, these techniques are extremely recent, with presenting great differences of qualities standards between laboratories and institutes. Big conquests will be necessary and they must be applied for scrutiny and so the most variants must be considered, specially in criminal area, where the biological samples discovered, in almost cases, don't have the ideal conditions of exam, and the collection, frequently, is performed improperly and entirely wrong. At the current work, it has been analyzed the idoneousness of results in these techniques, mentioning stages susceptible to mistakes and the main juridical and social consequences, besides elucidating to the society some important technical aspects, such as the scrutiny of the incredible rates of paternity and identity index unconsciously made public, and finally propose some carefully standards of measure for a real and efficient applicability of DNA methods

Abstract:
Among many resources for psychological evaluation, projective methods distinguished by its wealth of information about the components and psychic functioning, particularly in the research area of personality characteristics. To examine the infant age group, the Test of Fables (TF) is one of the available projective methods, based on psychoanalytic theory and has been relevant and useful, although requires review of psychometric evidence in the Brazilian context. The test consists of 10 unfinished short stories that are told to the child, and the main character is exposed to conflicting situations inherent in the stages of psychosexual development. The child is asked to complete these fables from her imagination and needs, allowing projective indicators of their dynamic personality and quality of defense mechanisms used. Currently, in Brazil, this projective method lies in its psychometric evidence review process. In this context, the present study aimed to gather validity evidence and indicators of accuracy and consistency of the pattern of Fables in its use in school children aged six to 12 years, comparing the yield obtained with three groups: a) children who have a psychiatry service (G1, n = 20); b) children with suggestive indicators of mental health problems (G2, n = 20); c) indicators of children without mental health problems, or with signs of psychic development and typical school (G3, n = 20). The intention was thus to examine the variables of Fables Test to identify the differential clinical diagnosis in school children aged six to 12 years, still analyzing possible effects of sex and age on outcomes in three groups of children. Although not set as an initial goal, a review was also performed in the evaluation system proposed in the Brazilian guider publication of the instrument. Study participants were selected from clinical services and public schools in the state of São Paulo, trying to pair them by gender and age, excluding those with intellectual limit. To this end, the following instruments were used: form identification of participants; Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ); Raven Coloured Progressive Matrices Test and Fables Test, properly applied after parental consent and coded according to their respective technical manuals. The encoding of the production test of Fables was performed by three independent evaluators, examining their accuracy, which showed very positive indicators. It was possible to characterize the production of each group as well as to identify statistically significant differences between them, signaling good indicators of validity of the Test of Fables, consistent with a diagnosis obtained by the SDQ. The variables of sex and age were not differentiated in child production. Thus, the current findings contribute to the advancement of scientific knowledge on this projective method, demonstrating their validity evidence empirically as well as emphasize the importance of its use in the professional practice of psychologists in the Brazilian context and, in particular, in the clinician context.

Taiyari, Khadijeh. "How much data are required to develop and validate a risk prediction model?" Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2017. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/10039739/.

Full text
Abstract:
It has been suggested that when developing risk prediction models using regression, the number of events in the dataset should be at least 10 times the number of parameters being estimated by the model. This rule was originally proposed to ensure the unbiased estimation of regression coefficients with confidence intervals that have correct coverage. However, only limited research has been conducted to assess the adequacy of this rule with regards to predictive performance. Furthermore, there is only limited guidance regarding the number of events required to develop risk prediction models using hierarchical data, for example when one has observations from several hospitals. One of the aims of this dissertation is to determine the number of events required to obtain reliable predictions from standard or hierarchical models for binary outcomes. This will be achieved by conducting several simulation studies based on real clinical data. It has also been suggested that when validating risk prediction models, there should be at least 100 events in the validation dataset. However, few studies have examined the adequacy of this recommendation. Furthermore, there are no guidelines regarding the sample size requirements when validating a risk prediction model based on hierarchical data. The second main aim of this dissertation is to investigate the sample size requirements for model validation using both simulation and analytical methods. In particular we will derive the relationship between sample size and the precision of some common measures of model performance such as the C statistic, D statistic, and calibration slope. The results from this dissertation will enable researchers to better assess their sample size requirements when developing and validating prediction models using both standard (independent) and clustered data.

Executive functions (EF) are an abilities set, including selective attention, cognitive flexibility, inhibitory control, planning, monitoring and working memory, among others, whose function is to regulate and control goals oriented behaviors. There are evidences that these abilities follow distinct developmental paths, and some of them still are in full development until the initial adulthood. In this way, this study aimed to investigate the development tends of different abilities of the EF in children and adolescents, searching for validity evidences of neuropsychological assessment instruments of these abilities. The participants were 572 children and adolescents with ages between 6 and 14 years, students of 1st to 8th grades of two public schools of a city of the SP interior. The instruments utilized were Auditive Work Memory Test, Visual Work Memory Test, Cancel Attentional Test, Trail Making Test parts A and B, Semantic Generation Test, Computerized Stroop Test, the Tower of London and the FAS Verbal Fluency Test. The Cancel Attentional Test and Trail Making Test parts A and B were applied collectively; the others, individually. Variance analysis and Kruskal-Wallis analysis revealed age effect in the performances in all instruments. The data suggested that the abilities evaluated follow developmental courses lightly distinct, the most initiating a more abrupt development between the 9 and 10 years. Mann-Whitney analysis showed that the girls were better that the boys in the auditive working memory, alternated attention and verbal fluency measures. Diverse significant correlations were find between the performances, the most of them were of low to moderate, corroborating the literature that defends the notion of the EF unit and diversity. Exploratory Factorial Analysis returned a two factors solution and regression analysis enabled the verification that the executive abilities can contribute of differential ways to the complex task performance, like as the FAS Verbal Fluency Test and the Tower of London Test. In this way, the study provided his contributions to the knowledge about EF and its development, as well derived validity evidences to the diverse instruments and, it‟s a hope, can expand its contribution to the future availability of adequate instruments for the construct assessment.

Abstract:
AbstractSocial media data has been rapidly applied as alternative data source for tourism statistics and measurement in recent years due to its availability, easy collection, good spatial coverage at multiple scales, and rich content. However, frequent criticism towards the social media is the bias towards the population of social media users leading to unknown representativeness of the entire population. The purpose of this study is to cross-validate the reliability and validity of visitation pattern of tourist destinations retrieved from the social media using alternative independent data sources. The primary social media data is TripAdvisor reviews of Florida attraction points, restaurants, and hotels. The inferred visitation pattern was validated against two independent datasets: cellphone tracking data and official visitor surveys. The validity was explored in tourist origins, destinations, and travel flows. Repetitively, travel patterns inferred from the social media were found strongly correlated to those from cellphone tracking and surveys. The visitation data obtained from social media was concluded to be reliable and representative.

Abstract:
AbstractThe primary objective of our research was to produce a list, as complete as possible, of validated Polish supercentenarians, that is, persons for whom there is satisfactory evidence that they attained age 110. Surprisingly, considering Poland’s tumultuous history, a great many of the registration records of events occurring long ago have survived. The research, begun in 2012, was done in state archives, church archives, county offices, and libraries, and we report the methodology and results here. Research was also done to obtain a list of the many more persons for whom there is satisfactory evidence that they attained age 105, but that research is not near completion.Although according to official statistics there were 69 deaths of supercentenarians in Poland between 2004 and 2016, we could only validate 14 supercentenarian deaths – all females – ever occurring in Poland. In contrast, there are 25 validated supercentenarians who were born in Poland and last resided elsewhere. We also present official detailed statistics on the number of persons, living and deceased, who attained age 100, by single year of age, and estimate the mortality of persons who attained age 105, based on these data, for the portion of Poland with better-quality information, and compare it to the German experience. Of course, because these official data have not been validated, any inferences drawn from them are not conclusive.

Abstract:
This document presents the deliverable D8.1 – the Data Management Plan (DMP) of work package 8 of the prodPhD project. It aims to present the plan for the management, generation, collection, security, preservation and sharing of data generated through the prodPhD project. The DMP is a key element for organizing the project’s data. It provides an analysis of the data, which will be collected, processed and published by the prodPhD consortium. The project embraces the initiatives of the European Commission to promote the open access to research data, aiming to improve and maximize access to and reuse of research data generated by Horizon 2020 projects. In this sense prodPhD will adhere to the Open Research Data Pilot (ORD Pilot) fostered by the European Commission, and this DMP will be developed following the standards of data storage, access and management. This plan will detail what data will be generated through the project, whether and how it will be made accessible for the verification and reuse and how it will be curated and preserved. In this context, the term data applies to the information generated during the different experimental campaigns carried out in the project, and specifically to the data, including associated metadata, to be used to validate the computational models and the technical solutions to be developed in the project. This document is the first version of the DMP and may be updated throughout the project, if significant changes (new data, changes in consortium policies, changes in consortium composition, etc.) arise.

Full text
Abstract:
The continued use of structural plastics in consumer products, industry, and transportation represents a potential source for durable, long lasting, and recyclable roadways. Costs to dispose of reinforced plastics can be similar to procuring new asphalt with mechanical performance exceeding that of the traditional road surface. This project examines improved material development times by leveraging advanced computational material models based on validated experimental data. By testing traditional asphalt and select carbon and glass reinforced composites, both new and recycled, it is possible to develop a finite element simulation that can predict the material characteristics under a number of loads virtually, and with less lead time compared to experimental testing. From the tested specimens, composites show minimal strength degradation when recycled and used within the asphalt design envelopes considered, with an average of 49% less wear, two orders of magnitude higher compressive strength, and three orders for tensile strength. Predictive computational analysis using the validated material models developed for this investigation confirms the long-term durability.
