The optopmetric scale is used on oftamologic clinic exam and selecting to determine the visual accuracy. On earlier study, by Dantas (2003), a method was developed for the selections of optoptics for the scale of regionalized images, as a initial proposal. Therefore, in order for this scale to be valid, it is needed to deepen the studies on the relation of the structuring and organizing of these optoptics, with visual accuracy and practical testing. The objectives are: To valid the RAD scale as its capacity to identify children with ocular alterations; Evaluate the co-relation among the coefficients of visual accuracy; Verify the associations among the tests; Verify the agreement of the measurement of the three examiners for the right and left eyes, separately. Study of validation of technology, experimental, random, triple blind, quantitative, developed over the first semester of 2006, having as sample, 246 students, selected on a random simple way. The methodological referential used by the research was adapted from the model of construto test with the theoric, experimental and analytic procedures. For the validation of the RAD scale, statistic coefficients of validating and precision are used. The sensibility for the moments RAD 1 and RAD 2 was respectively 88,6 and 85,7 for the right eye, and 78,6 and 92,9 for the left eye. As to the specificity the values found for the RAD 1 and RAD 2 scales were 95,3 and 98,1 for the right eye, and 97,7 and 98,6 for the left eye. Respectively, the positive predictive value (VP+) on the RAD 1 moment was 75,6 and 81,5 and on the RAD 2 moment, was 88,2 and 89,7; The negative predictive value (VP-) on the RAD 1 moment was 98,0 and 97,3 and on the RAD 2 moment it was 97,6 and 99,1. There was a correlation among the visual accuracy coefficients between âSnellen and RAD 1â, âSnellen and RAD 2â, for the two eyes (p = 0,0001). On the (X2) association were found a coefficient of 151,90 (p = 0,0001) for RAD 1 and 177,07 (p = 0, 0001) fro RAD 2; For the left and right eyes on RAD 1, it was 147,75 (p = 0,0001) and 199.69 (p = 0,0001) on RAD 2 on the right eye. For the concordance analysis in all cases, an Alpha de Cronbach higher than 0,929 was found. The data show significant between the standard criteria used and the scale of images in analysis. According to literature, the validation model in technology establishes rules to be fulfilled. The making of a regionalized chart of figures must fulfill the following rules: Use of the theory of image formation to construct optometric scales. Use of the visual system to characterize the visual learning (step 1); Patterning of the optometric scale as system proprieties. (step 2); Use of dimensionality based on the opticâphysiologic aspects. (step 3); And characterization of the main definitions to be followed on the validation of the images and building of optoptics. (step 4); Demonstration of the operationalization on elaborating optometric scales. (step 5); Analysis of the optoptics of the image scale. (step 6); Planning of the application on the methodology. (step 7); Application and gathering for the measurements of the ocular alterations (step 8); Use of validation techniques (step 9); Use of precision techniques (step 10) and final considerations (step 11). The established rules serve as a starting point to de development of the chart in each region, for each one should have its own characteristic that must be respected.
A escala optomÃtrica à utilizada em exame clÃnico oftalmolÃgico e triagens para determinar a acuidade visual. Em estudo anterior realizado por Dantas (2003), desenvolveu-se um mÃtodo para seleÃÃo dos optÃtipos para escala de figuras regionalizada, como uma proposta inicial. Entretanto, para esta escala ser validada, à necessÃrio aprofundar os estudos na relaÃÃo da estruturaÃÃo e organizaÃÃo desses optÃtipos com a acuidade visual e de testes prÃticos. TÃm-se como objetivos: validar a escala RAD quanto a sua capacidade de identificaÃÃo de crianÃa portadora de alteraÃÃo ocular; avaliar a correlaÃÃo entre os coeficientes da acuidade visual; verificar a associaÃÃo entre os testes; verificar a concordÃncia das medidas dos trÃs examinadores para os olhos direito e esquerdo, separadamente. Estudo de validaÃÃo de tecnologia, experimental, aleatÃrioo, triplo cego, quantitativo, desenvolvido durante o primeiro semestre de 2006 tendo como amostra 246 alunos selecionados de forma aleatÃria simples. O referencial teÃrico metodolÃgico adotado para a pesquisa foi adaptado do modelo de teste de construto contemplando os procedimentos teÃrico, experimental e analÃtico. Para validaÃÃo da escala RAD, utilizaram-se coeficientes estatÃsticos de validade e precisÃo. A sensibilidade para os momentos RAD 1 e RAD 2 foi, respectivamente, 88,6 e 85,7 para o olho direito e 78,6 e 92,9 para o esquerdo. Quanto à especificidade, os valores encontrados para as escalas RAD 1 e RAD 2 foram, respectivamente, 95,3 e 98,1 para o olho direito e 97,7 e 98,6 para o esquerdo. Para os olhos direito e esquerdo, respectivamente, o valor preditivo positivo (VP+) no momento RAD 1 foi de 75,6 e 81,5 e no momento RAD 2 foi de 88,2 e 89,7; jà o valor preditivo negativo (VP-) no momento RAD 1 foi de 98,0 e 97,3 e no momento RAD 2 foi de 97,6 e 99,1. Houve correlaÃÃo entre coeficientes da acuidade visual entre âSnellen e RAD 1â, âSnellen e RAD 2â, para os dois olhos (p = 0,0001). Na associaÃÃo (X2) encontrou-se um coeficiente de 151,90 (p = 0,0001) para RAD 1 e de 177,07 (p = 0,0001) para RAD 2; para o olho direito e para o esquerdo em RAD 1 foi de 147,75 (p = 0,0001) e de 199,69 (p = 0,0001) em RAD 2, no olho esquerdo. Para a anÃlise da concordÃncia em todos os casos encontrou-se um Alfa de Cronbach maior que 0,929. Os dados demonstram significÃncia entre o critÃrio padrÃo utilizado e a escala de figuras em anÃlise. Conforme a literatura, o modelo de validaÃÃo em tecnologia estabelece normas a serem cumpridas. A confecÃÃo de uma tabela de figuras regionalizada exige o cumprimento dos seguintes quesitos: uso da teoria de formaÃÃo da imagem para construÃÃo de escalas optomÃtricas: uso do sistema visual para caracterizar o aprendizado visual (passo 1); padronizaÃÃo da escala optomÃtrica como propriedade do sistema (passo 2); uso da dimensionalidade com base nos aspectos Ãptico-fisiolÃgicos (passo 3); e caracterizaÃÃo das definiÃÃes principais a serem seguidas na validaÃÃo de figuras e construÃÃo de optÃtipos (passo 4); demonstraÃÃo da operacionalizaÃÃo na elaboraÃÃo de escalas optomÃtricas (passo 5); anÃlise dos optÃtipos da escala de figuras (passo 6); planejamento da aplicaÃÃo na metodologia (passo 7); aplicaÃÃo e coleta para aferiÃÃo das alteraÃÃes oculares (passo 8); uso de tÃcnicas de validaÃÃo (passo 9); uso de tÃcnicas de precisÃo (passo 10) e consideraÃÃes finais (passo 11). Abstract:
Abstract There is a great interest by practitioners and academics to consider patents as a strategic and organizational concern aiming to bring economic and competitive advantage, in addition to its legal value. To this end, patent management has a critical importance for enterprises operations, and successful firms are also known by their well-structured management process and organizational structure for patenting. However, there is a demand for a holistic, valid and practical measurement instruments to monitor patent management and assess firm patent portfolios. To fill this gap, the current study develops and validates patent management measurement scales at the firm level. To this purpose, a four-step (i.e. specify domain of the construct, item generation, scale purification, and scale finalization) widely recognized and structured scale development and validation procedure towards developing psychometrically sound measures is adopted. The first two steps focus on the development of measurement scales within a defined scope of investigation. To this end, an in-depth literature review supported by a qualitative analysis through interview with experts is carried out. These analyses allowed conceptualizing the theoretical background of the constructs under investigation, which leads us to develop a theoretical framework of patent management with core processes and supporting dimensions and associated activities and organizational aspects. Then, the pool of measurement items for each activities and organizational aspects are generated. In the third and fourth steps, we carried out exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) to purify and validate, respectively, the measurement items using two samples of primary data collected through an online survey sent to firms located in Southern and Northern European countries (the EFA) and Central European countries (the CFA). The results of EFA and CFA yield some changes to the initial framework and the measurement items. More particularly, the study demonstrates that patent management is composed of five core processes (i.e. patent generation, freedom to operate, patent portfolio management, patent exploitation and enforcement, and patent intelligence) and two supporting dimensions (patent strategy and organization for patenting). For each core process and supporting dimension, the underlying factor structure with the associated measurement items are finalized after removing some items based on established criteria for item retention. Reliability and validity are also assessed to further support the soundness of the measurement scales. This study has both theoretical and practical implications. For academics, the study extends existing research by offering an up-to-date and comprehensive conceptualization of firm patent management activities, thereby enriching patent management body of literature. Moreover, it offers researchers a basis to test hypotheses about the relationships among processes and dimensions of patent management, and firms output attributes (e.g. performance) using real data collected from firms. In addition, the scales developed in this study for each core process and supporting dimension can also be used separately to suit specific research needs and examine a particular aspect of patent management. For managers, the study offers a comprehensive framework that can be used as an assessment tool to evaluate firm patent management. Moreover, the measurement of the current level of patent management can be used as a basis for managers and entrepreneurs to adopt a proactive attitude towards patent management.
Sommario Considerare i brevetti come un aspetto strategico-organizzativo che mira a portare un vantaggio economico e competitivo, in aggiunta al suo valore legale, sta diventando una pratica sempre più consolidata tra professionisti e accademici. In tal senso, la gestione dei brevetti ha un'importanza fondamentale per le imprese, tanto che le aziende di successo sono altrettanto note per la struttura organizzativa ed i loro efficaci processi di gestione dei brevetti. Tuttavia, vi è una richiesta di strumenti di misura olistici, validi e pratici per gestire i brevetti e valutare portafogli brevetti delle aziende. Per colmare questa lacuna, tale lavoro di tesi sviluppa e convalida delle scale di misura con riferimento al processo di gestione brevettuale a livello aziendale. A questo scopo, è stata adottata un’ampiamente conosciuta procedura di sviluppo e validazione di scale di misura strutturata in quattro fasi (i.e. specificare il dominio del costrutto, generare gli item, purificare le scale e finalizzare le scale). Le prime due fasi si concentrano sulla definizione dell’ambito di indagine e sullo sviluppo di scale di misura in questo ambito. A tal fine, è stata effettuata una revisione approfondita della letteratura supportata da un'analisi qualitativa attraverso delle interviste con esperti. Queste analisi hanno permesso di concettualizzare il background teorico dei costrutti oggetto di indagine, il che ha portato a sviluppare un framework di gestione dei brevetti composto da processi core e dimensioni di supporto, al cui interno sono state definite le rispettive attività e gli aspetti organizzativi. Quindi, è stato generato l’insieme di item di misura per ciascuna attività e aspetto organizzativo. Nella terza e quarta fase, sono state effettuate un'analisi fattoriale esplorativa e un'analisi fattoriale confermativa per purificare e validare, rispettivamente, gli item di misura utilizzando due campioni di dati primari raccolti attraverso un sondaggio online inviato alle aziende situate in Paesi dell'Europa meridionale e settentrionale (analisi esplorativa) e paesi dell'Europa centrale (analisi confermativa). I risultati di tali analisi hanno portato ad alcune modifiche al framework iniziale e agli item di misura. Più in particolare, lo studio dimostra che la gestione dei brevetti è composta da cinque processi fondamentali (i.e. generazione di brevetti, freedom to operate, gestione del portafoglio brevetti, sfruttamento e enforcement dei brevetti e intelligence sui brevetti) e due dimensioni di supporto (strategia dei brevetti e organizzazione per la brevettazione). Per ciascun processo principale e dimensione di supporto, sono stati definiti attività e fattori organizzativi (i cosiddetti “fattori”), con i relativi item di misura, dopo aver rimosso alcuni item in base a precisi criteri stabiliti in precedenza. Al fine di supportare ulteriormente la solidità delle scale di misurazione, sono state valutate l'affidabilità e la validità delle scale di misura con appositi test statistici. Questo studio ha implicazioni sia teoriche che pratiche. Dal punto di vista accademico, lo studio estende la ricerca esistente offrendo una concettualizzazione completa e aggiornata delle attività di gestione dei brevetti a livello aziendale, arricchendo in tal modo la letteratura sulla gestione dei brevetti. Inoltre, offre ai ricercatori una base per testare le ipotesi sulle relazioni tra i processi e le dimensioni della gestione dei brevetti e le caratteristiche di output delle imprese (e.g. prestazioni) utilizzando dati reali raccolti dalle aziende. Inoltre, le scale sviluppate in questo studio per ciascun processo core e dimensione di supporto possono anche essere utilizzate separatamente per soddisfare esigenze di ricerca specifiche ed esaminare un aspetto particolare della gestione dei brevetti. Per i manager, lo studio offre un quadro completo sulla gestione brevettuale che può essere utilizzato come strumento di valutazione per analizzare la gestione dei brevetti. Inoltre, la misura dell'attuale livello di gestione dei brevetti può essere utilizzata come base per manager e imprenditori per adottare un atteggiamento proattivo nella gestione brevettuale.

Abstract:
This thesis is the first attempt to construct a standardized measure of literacy for the medium of video games, filling a gap in the literature by synthesizing various items of skills, behaviors, and affective components from existent studies and determining their correlations through analyzation of survey data. The five categories that were derived from conceptual review and factor analysis have high measures of internal consistency: Information and Systems Management; Exploration and Enjoyment; Teamwork; Design; and Socialization. To test for external consistency and reliability, the proposed gaming literacy model was compared to the Novak and Hoffman (1997) construction of flow, using the three primary components of Challenge, Skill, and Play. Flow is the ultimate level of optimal experience possible with any activity, so it was assumed that high levels of self-reported literacy would coincide with similarly elevated scores in concern with the flow phenomenon. The data shows that, indeed, there is a positive and statistically significant relationship between the two constructs. Nomological validity tests between males and females were conducted post-hoc, using the available data. The intended use for this scale is to establish a baseline measurement system for self-report methods of assessing literacy with video games. Future research should attempt to correlate the scale to actual gaming activity, test the importance of each component in an experimental setting, and determine the discriminate validity by comparing it to scales that have been established for other forms of digital literacy.

Abstract:
Racism has been identified as a profoundly traumatic and a psychologically damaging experience affecting Black people (Harrell, 2000; White & Parham, 1990; Williams & Williams-Morris, 2000). It has been theorized that one of the most devastating effects racial oppression (i.e. racism and discrimination) is the internalization of that oppression (Bailey, Chung, Williams, & Singh, 2006; Speight, 2007). Speight (2007) argued that an understanding of racism would be incomplete without considering how it is internalized. Internalized racial oppression is the process through which Black people consciously and unconsciously internalize and accept the dominant White culture’s oppressive actions and beliefs towards Black people, while at the same time rejecting an African worldview and cultural motifs (Bailey, Chung, Williams, & Singh, 2006). Internalized racial oppression is believed to adversely affect the psychological health of Black people. This study examined the construct validity of the Internalized Racial Oppression Scale (IROS; Bailey et al., 2006) through the use of confirmatory factor analysis and social desirability. Additionally, this study investigated internalized racial oppression as a predictor of the endogenous factors of Psychological Distress, Psychological Well-Being, Personal Self-Esteem, Collective Self-esteem, and Life Satisfaction through the use of latent variable path analysis. It was hypothesized that, similar to racial oppression; greater levels of internalized racial oppression will predict greater psychological distress, lower psychological well-being, lower personal self-esteem, lower collective self-esteem, and lower satisfaction with life among Black college students. Three hundred seventy Black students (Cohort 1 = 102, Cohort 2 = 268) participated in this study. Cohort 1 consisted of students recruited from a predominately White university in the Southeastern region of the United States. Cohort 2 consisted of a national sample of students. Participants from Cohort 1 completed a pencil and paper survey, while the participants from Cohort 2 completed a survey via online. The results supported the factorial structure of the IROS. Further, the results found that the IROS was a predictor of psychological distress, psychological well-being, collective self-esteem, and satisfaction with life. Implications for research and practice are discussed.

Abstract:

Organizational citizenship behaviors (OCBs) are the extra-role, voluntary behaviors performed by organization members for the benefit of the organization. These behaviors have been widely studied and several dimensions have been defined. However, the majority of the work on OCBs focuses on traditional organizations where all employees are collocated and can interact on a regular basis. With the changing workplace, employees can now work remotely or across different locations and still be expected to work together. Those employees who are not collocated may not feel the need to benefit the organization, but may feel connected to the team and therefore participate in virtual team citizenship behaviors (VTCBs).

This paper reviews the current OCB literature by defining OCBs, reviewing the empirical literature, and providing a critique of the current literature. Next, a framework for studying VTCBs is developed based on virtual team literature. I define and discuss the differences between VTCBs and OCBs. Next, I develop propositions for assessing construct validity using multiple validation approaches, including convergent, and divergent, and nomological validity. I then propose and conduct three interlocking studies to generate items for the scale (Study 1), to assess the dimensionality and psychometric properties of the scale and establish convergent and divergent validity (Study 2), and to test the proposed nomological model (Study 3). The results of each study and the implications of the studies are discussed.

Brand equity is an extensively researched subject associated with marketing performance measurement. Although brand equity is a significant source of competitive advantage online, previous conceptualisations and measures thereof overlook the unique characteristics of computer mediated environments that render consumers co-creators of brand value as opposed to passive recipients. Experience with interactive media such as the internet 1 has shown that simply replicating offline marketing effort online is not capitalising on the interactive opportunities offered by the internet. The internet's unique capabilities have significant implications for the development and management of brands and, by extension, to the translation of brand value into consumer based brand equity. By choosing to focus on e-tail brands, a multi-phased research programme was initiated to identify the facets of etail brand equity, and then develop and validate a scale for its measurement. Following well established procedures for scale development and validation in the social sciences (e.g., Churchill 1979; Gerbing and Anderson 1988), an exploratory stage was first undertaken in conjunction with a literature review to identify the facets of e-tail brand equity. This involved sixteen depth interviews with brand experts and two focus groups with consumers. Based on the results of this exploratory qualitative stage, e-tail brand equity was assumed to be three-faceted, the dimensions being emotional connection, online experience, and responsive service nature. An initial item pool was then developed to tap the aforementioned facets. In this thesis a lowercase "i" is used for the word "internet" (cf. Schwartz 2002). Next, quantitative data were collected by means of a web based consumer survey, administered to a sample of UK online shoppers, all of whom were registered users of a leading European online reward programme. After a series of iterative statistical analyses, including coefficient alpha, item-to-total correlations, exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis, the initial pool was reduced to a more tractable number of items. Items of fulfilment and trust failed to load on the hypothesised factors, responsive service nature and emotional connection respectively, but emerged as separate factors. Various tests of validity, reliability, and unidimensionality provided preliminary evidence of the stability of the resulting scale's psychometric properties, and suggested that e-tail brand equity is a second order construct with five independent but correlated dimensions: emotional connection, online experience, responsive service nature, trust, and fulfilment. The proposed e-tail brand equity scale is reflective of a paradigm shift precipitated by the internet and its related technologies. No longer is brand equity the outcome of "cultural engineering" branding, but is instead the result of a dialectical process between managers and consumers. The implications of this research are both theoretical and practical. The 12-item e-tail brand equity scale can potentially be used for a variety of applications in e-tailing, and can also serve as the basis for further empirical research in marketing.

Gender Identity Counselor Competency Scale: A Validation Study The purpose of the current study was to explore the validity of the Gender Identity Counselor Competency Scale, a measure meant to examine counselor competency for working with clients identifying as trans*. A national sample of counseling students and faculty accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling & Related Programs (CACREP) was obtained. The data from 187 participants were analyzed using exploratory factor analysis during the first phase of data analysis. After extraction, two items were removed from the measure and it was renamed GICCS-Revised (GICCS-R). Three factors emerged from analysis and supported the tripartite model for multicultural counseling competencies and these factors were labeled knowledge, awareness, and skills. High internal consistency was found and evidence convergent validity was observed. Some evidence for discriminant validity was found. During the second phase of data analysis, analysis of covariance was used to explore mean differences among levels of education on overall GICCS-R scores as well as the subscale scores, while controlling for social desirability. There were group differences on the overall and subscale scores, with the exception of the awareness subscale. A hierarchal multiple regression was conducted to determine whether a set of variables (social desirability, levels of education, number of workshops attended or facilitated, and number of trans*-identified clients worked with) could predict scores on the overall GICCS-R and each subscale. The variables combined explained 45.5% of the variance on overall GICCS-R scores. Social desirability was not a significant predictor of scores. First year counseling master’s students; participants who attended or facilitated 0-4 workshops; and participants who worked with 0-1 clients were significant predictors of low overall competency scores. Levels of education and levels of experience explained a significant proportion of the variance on the knowledge and skills subscales, but not on the awareness subscale. The findings from the current study have important implications for how trans* counselor competency is measured in students and faculty. The findings also have implications for ways to improve levels competency.

The tolerant attitudes towards sexual violence against women constitute an important risk factor that should be considered to explain this type of aggressive behavior. One of the instruments that evaluates these attitudes is the Rape Supportive Attitude Scale (RSAS) developed by Lottes. The results of different psychometric studies have demonstrated good indexes of reliability and validity in American, Spanish and Salvadorian university students. The purpose of the study was to explore the psychometric properties of the RSAS in Argen­ tinean university students. We provide evidence of content validity through expert ratings, process validity through cognitive debriefing interviews, and evidence of internal structure through exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis. Finally, the internal consistency of the scale was estimated and an analysis of contrasting groups in relation to gender was con­ ducted. The results allow us to infer that the RSAS scale is a valid and reliable tool to assess rape supportive attitudes in Argentinean university students.
Las actitudes tolerantes hacia la violencia sexual ejercida contra las mujeres constituyen un factor de riesgo importante a considerar en la explicación de este tipo de conductas. Uno de los instrumentos para evaluar estas actitudes es la Escala de Actitud Favorable hacia la Violación (EAFV) de Lottes, la que ha mostrado fiabilidad y validez en muestras de estu­ diantes universitarios estadounidenses, españoles y salvadoreños. El objetivo de este estudio fue explorar las propiedades psicométricas del instrumento en estudiantes universitarios argentinos. Se aportó evidencia de contenido mediante juicio de expertos, evidencia de pro­ ceso de respuesta por medio de entrevistas de cognitive debriefing y evidencia de estructura interna a partir del análisis factorial exploratorio y confirmatorio. Finalmente, se estimó la consistencia interna de la escala y se realizó un análisis de grupos contrastados en relación al género. Los resultados obtenidos permiten inferir que la escala EAFV es un instrumento válido y confiable para evaluar actitudes favorables hacia conductas de violación en univer­ sitarios argentinos.

Um dos instrumentos para avaliar esses comportamentos é o Questionário de Atitudes Favoráveis em Relação ao Estupro (QAFRE) de Lottes, que tem demonstrado confiabilidade e validez em amostras de estudantes universitários estadounidenses, espanhóis e salvadorenhos. O objetivo deste estudo foi explorar as propriedades psicométricas do questionário em estu­ dantes universitários argentinos. Evidencia sobre a validez do conteúdo foi fornecida através da avaliação de juízes expertos, a validez sobre o processo de resposta foi fornecida através de entrevistas de debriefing cognitivo ea validez de estrutura interna foi fornecida através das analises fatoriais exploratório e confirmatório. Finalmente, a consistência interna do questionário foi estimada e uma análise contrastando grupos em relação ao gênero foi feita. A Magical Contagion and AIDS Scale was developed to address problems with existing Contagion and AIDS measures. Magical Contagion is an influence that exists after contact is terminated. It is comprised of Permanence, Holographic Effects, Moral Germ Conflation and Backward Action. Data from 280 undergraduates revealed low mean levels of Magical Contagion and AIDS. Contagion effects did not differ on demographic variables. Content validity, criterion-related validity, discriminate validity, and internal consistency were evaluated. Significant correlations were found between the Contagion Scale and Merging/Separation and Homophobia Scales. Negative correlations were found between the Contagion scale and the AIDS knowledge and social desirability scales. Alpha reliabilities were high (a > .93) for the Contagion scale and subscales. Factor analysis suggested the existence of a single factor and mixed support for three factors.

The purpose of this study was to design the Abstinence Motivation Scale-Sex (AMS-Sex), a scale to assess adolescent motivations for sexual abstinence using the self-determination theory (SDT) motivation continuum as a framework. Previous sexual abstinence research, SDT measurement studies, pilot study data, and expert panel feedback were used to develop the initial 77-item AMS-Sex. The sample consisted of 695 adolescents (aged 15 to 18; M age = 16.49, SD = 1.08; 50.8% male) recruited online from the across the U.S. Participants completed an online survey. The sample was randomly split into two samples. Independent samples t-tests indicated that sample 1 (N = 351; M age = 16.53, SD = 1.09; 48% male) and sample 2 (N = 344; M age = 16.46, SD = 1.07; 51% male) did not significantly differ by age, gender, parent education, annual household income, sexual behavior, or social desirability. Sample 1 data was used to assess scale reliabilities and run exploratory factor analyses (EFA) to examine the factor structure of the 77-item AMS-Sex. The 77-item AMS-Sex had good internal consistency (α = .99), as did the four subscales. As anticipated, the EFA resulted in a four-factor structure. However, these factors did not represent the anticipated SDT motivation types. Rather, the autonomous motivation items loaded on a single factor; the controlled motivation items loaded onto three factors by source or reference (i.e., parents, peers/others, and self). A second EFA was examined, constraining the model to two factors (i.e., controlled, autonomous). The 77 AMS-Sex items were reduced to a final 24-item AMS-Sex measure with six items per motivation type through a rigorous process using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) with modification indices and information from CFA loadings, item means, standard deviations, skewness, correlations with social desirability, EFA loadings, and item wording and clarity. Sample 2 was then used to validate the final 24-item AMS-Sex using CFA and structural equation modeling (SEM). CFA was used to assess the four-factor, three-factor, and two-factor models. Model fit indices indicated that the four-factor and three-factor models had acceptable model fit, but the two-factor model did not. SEM was used to assess the relationships between the factors (i.e., types of motivation) and age, gender, social desirability, and sexual behavior for the four-factor, three-factor, and two-factor models. The SEM models indicated that older teens tended to be less motivated towards abstinence; girls were more motivated towards abstinence than boys; and sexual behavior was negatively correlated with all four motivation types, but more strongly with the autonomous motivations; and, in general, autonomous motivations were negative predictors of sexual behavior, while controlled motivations positively predicted sexual behavior. EFAs with the final 24 items were assessed, resulting in a three-factor solution: external, introjected, and autonomous motivations.

Sexual minorities face stigmatizing experiences which can lead to disparities in physical and mental health, as well as social and economic resources. Additionally, research suggests that microaggressions, or small actions and comments that speak to a person’s prejudices, act as stigmatizing experiences and contribute to negative outcomes for the stigmatized. However, most studies of sexual minority health do not explore bisexual experiences uniquely, despite evidence that bisexuals have unique experiences of stigma and microaggressions. Those studies that do explore bisexual experiences find worse outcomes for bisexuals than their lesbian or gay counterparts. Thus, the current study developed a quantitative scale for assessing experiences of microaggressions specific to bisexuals. A 35-item scale formulated around previously identified microaggression types was validated using data from a sample of 232 bisexuals. Results indicated that bisexual microaggressions were distinct from homonegative microaggressions and that bisexual microaggressions were related to worse physical, psychological, and environmental quality of life. This scale is an additional tool that researchers may use in understanding how stigma experiences lead to negative outcomes, as well as to identify opportunities for alleviating disparities.

This study aimed to develop and validate a rating scale for assessing English First Additional Language essays at Grade 12 level for the final National Senior Certificate examination. The importance of writing as a communicative skill is emphasised with the re-introduction of writing as Paper 3 of the English First Additional Language examination at the end of Grade 12 in South Africa. No empirical evidence, however, is available to support claims of validity for the current rating scale. The literature on the concept of validity and the process of validation was surveyed. Theoretical models and validation frameworks were evaluated to establish a theoretical base for the development and validation of a rating scale for assessing writing. The adopted framework was used to evaluate the adequacy of the current rating scale used for assessing Grade 12 writing in South Africa. The current scale was evaluated in terms of the degree to which it offers an appropriate means of assessing Grade 12 Level essay writing while adhering to requirements of the National Curriculum Statement. It was found lacking and the need for a new, validated rating scale was established. Various approaches to scale development were considered in consideration of factors that impact scores directly, viz. the type of rating scale, rater characteristics, scoring procedures and rater training. A new scale was developed and validated following an empirical procedure comprising four phases. The empirical process was based on an analysis of actual performances of Grade 12 English learner writing. A combination of quantitative and qualitative methods was used in each of the four phases to ensure the validity of the instrument. The outcome of this project was an empirically developed and validated multiple trait rating scale to assess Grade 12 essay writing. The proposed scale distinguishes five criteria assessed by means of a seven-point scale.

Turbulent simulations are performed for model- and full-scale hydrokinetic turbine using rotating blade using solution adapted grids up to 8.8M cells. The performance characteristics at both scales, and intermediate wake predictions at model-scale are validated using experimental data, and the effect of grids, turbulence modeling, scale and stanchion on the wake recovery is evaluated. The thrust and power predictions compare within 5% of the experimental data. LES performs better than other models for the wake prediction, and the averaged error is 7% and 30% in the near and intermediate wake, respectively. The large errors in the intermediate wake are due to poor predictions of cross plane turbulent fluctuations, which results in the under prediction of the wake diffusion. The wake deficit increases due to the effect of stanchion, and increase in Re. The far-wake shows a Gaussian profile, whose width and amplitude show linear increase and decrease, respectively, with progression.

Job satisfaction has, and continues to be an important construct of interest to researchers and practitioners alike. However, conflicting operational definitions and inconsistent measurement systems have reduced the efficacy of the construct in predicting important job-related outcomes for organizations and their employees. The Facet Satisfaction Scale (FSS) was designed to overcome these deficiencies by creating a facet-based measure that assesses job satisfaction in accordance with recent definitions of the construct. Reliability and validity analyses were conducted on both the complete and shortened version of the scale. The FSS exhibited evidence of reliability (ranging from .52 to .93 for the shortened FSS, and .53 to .96 for the complete FSS). Evidence of scale validity was also obtained through the use of construct, content, and criterion-related validity measures. Implications of the study on future research on job satisfaction are discussed.

Nearly every decision must be made with a degree of uncertainty regarding the outcome. Decision making based on modeling and simulation predictions needs to incorporate and aggregate uncertain evidence. To validate multiscale simulation models, it may be necessary to consider evidence collected at a length scale that is different from the one at which a model predicts. In addition, traditional methods of uncertainty analysis do not distinguish between two types of uncertainty: uncertainty due to inherently random inputs, and uncertainty due to lack of information about the inputs. This thesis examines and applies a Bayesian approach for model parameter validation that uses generalized interval probability to separate these two types of uncertainty. A generalized interval Bayes’ rule (GIBR) is used to combine the evidence and update belief in the validity of parameters. The sensitivity of completeness and soundness for interval range estimation in GIBR is investigated. Several approaches to represent complete ignorance of probabilities’ values are tested. The result from the GIBR method is verified using Monte Carlo simulations. The method is first applied to validate the parameter set for a molecular dynamics simulation of defect formation due to radiation. Evidence is supplied by the comparison with physical experiments. Because the simulation includes variables whose effects are not directly observable, an expanded form of GIBR is implemented to incorporate the uncertainty associated with measurement in belief update. In a second example, the proposed method is applied to combining the evidence from two models of crystal plasticity at different length scales.

The purpose of this study was to develop and conduct initial validation of a special MMPI scale for the detection of bulimia. Existing measures all contain content-obvious items that require the individual to self-disclose regarding their bulimia symptomatology. Such measures are not effective in identifying those reluctant or unwilling to self-disclose. A measure which utilizes nonobvious items would be useful in identifying those undetected by other measures. The MMPI item pool was utilized to develop such a nonobvious measure. A number of treatment centers were contacted to solicit MMPI response sheets and diagnostic and demographic information from existing client files. A random 80% subsample was drawn from the total sample with the remaining 20% reserved for cross-validation analyses.Item analysis and discriminant analysis were conducted to identify items which differentiated between criterion and comparison groups. The 31 items chosen by these analyses became the B-scale. The bulimic individuals were found to be differentiated from those in the comparison groups by significantly higher scores on the new B-scale Two-way cross-classification frequency analysis established a cutoff score of 21. Through evaluation of K-scale corrections it was determined that such correction did not add to the accuracy of the B-scale and is, therefore, unnecessary.The discriminant validity of the B-scale was then examined. Discriminant function analysis established the B-scale as a better predictor of group membership than the existing clinical scales. In addition, the existing clinical scales were not found to add significantly to prediction when compared with the B-scale alone. Cross-validation analyses were conducted on the independent 20% random sample, demonstrating that the B-scale effectively identifies bulimics when applied to a new sample. Implications of this scale construction and suggestions for future research are presented.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Numerous tests exist for the assessment of general cognitive functioning. Most of these tests were developed within the discipline of psychology. Neuropsychological tests are very useful, but have some limitations. Administration of the tests is limited to a psychologist, is very timeconsuming in that it can take 3-8 hours to administer and often need specialized equipment. At the other end of the continuum are very brief screening tests. General practitioners, psychiatrists and occupational therapists, in addition to psychologists, also use these tests. Although useful, the short tests only provide limited information. An intermediate level test streamlining the assessment process between the very short and longer neuropsychological tests is therefore introduced by this study. The Bedside Cognitive Assessment Battery (BCAB) was developed in 1995 and are since used, at Tygerberg Hospital's Memory Clinic, to assess patients and teach students. The test comprehensively assesses the six main classes of cognitive functioning, namely attention and concentration, speech, memory, motor functioning, perceptual functioning and executive functioning. Approximately 35-45 minutes is required for administration and training is needed to administer the BCAB. No specialized equipment is needed for administration. The battery can therefore be used at the bedside, in the office or at old age homes. The aims of this study were to validate the BCAB for use with people aged eighteen years and older, and provide normative values for use in clinical settings. The test was revised in 1997 and 2001, and extensively so in 2002, but was never formally evaluated for validity. Well-known single tests were used to compile the BCAB. Most of these tests have proven validity and reliability, but only for foreign populations. In addition, some items were reformulated and others created by the researchers. The introduction of normative values would also be useful to assist in the delineation of cognitively intact and impaired individuals. This study succeeded in providing a table of normative values. One-hundred-and-sixty Afrikaans and English participants, and fourteen Xhosa participants were assessed in their mother tongue language. This project thus also introduced a Xhosa version of the BCAB. The purpose of the Xhosa version was to address the lack of culturally relevant cognitive assessment instruments. Results were evaluated for the effects of the variables' language, gender, age and education. The effect of language was most noticeable in the Xhosa group. Gender did not affect results as dramatically as age and especially, education. These significant effects on the aforementioned variables have been described in previous reports. The BCAB is thus relevant and useful as a detector of mild to moderate impairment. It can also be used to identify specific impairment. This can narrow down the investigation of psychologists, thus saving time and money. In addition, medical and nonmedical staff can use the BCAB. Some limitations were also identified. The sample used may limit the generalization of results. Some test items also need revision, along with further validation studies. Clinicians are therefore advised to use the BCAB only in addition to complete clinical examinations when making decisions regarding a patient's cognitive status. The BCAB appears to be a valid tool for bedside assessment. However, this study could only set the stage for further research, especially studies concerned with establishing normative values.

Abstract:
Exercise rooted in changing one’s appearance is associated with increased disordered eating and body image pathology. There are a limited number of scales assessing appearance-based exercise, and those that do are methodologically flawed. The aim of the current work was to develop a psychometrically sound measure of appearance-based exercise (Exercise Appearance Motivations Scale (EAMS)). Female undergraduate students (N = 650) completed an online survey designed to assess the EAMS’ psychometric properties. Factor analysis and hierarchical regressions were used for measure development and validation. Five factors of the EAMS were identified through factor analysis: muscularity, appearance, societal pressures, shape/weight, and avoidance/shame. Pearson product moment correlations were used to examine the associations between the EAMS and scales assessing convergent validity (appearance comparison, disordered eating, appearance evaluation, internalization of body ideals) and discriminant validity (belief in a just world). Results indicated that Cronbach’s alpha (α = .94) and test-retest reliability coefficients (r = .77) were adequate. The EAMS demonstrated adequate construct and incremental validity. These results provide preliminary evidence that the EAMS scale is a reliable and valid measure of appearance-based motives of exercise behavior when used with undergraduate women. Implications, limitations, and future research ideas are discussed.

The purpose of this study was to develop and evaluate engineering self-efficacy measures for undergraduate students (N = 321) and to examine whether students' engineering self-efficacy differed by gender, year level, and major. The relationships between engineering self-efficacy and academic achievement and intent to persist in engineering were also investigated. Data from engineering students from two southeastern universities were collected in spring 2013. Exploratory factor analyses resulted in a unidimensional general engineering self-efficacy scale and a three-factor (i.e., research skills, tinkering skills, and engineering design) engineering skills self-efficacy scale. Multivariate analyses of variance revealed that self-efficacy did not differ by gender or year level. Students in different engineering sub disciplines reported different levels of tinkering self-efficacy. Multiple regression analysis showed that engineering self-efficacy measures predicted academic achievement outcomes but not intent to persist in engineering. Engineering self-efficacy significantly contributed to the prediction of achievement after controlling for prior achievement. Research funded by the National Science Foundation, EEC Award No.1240328.

Background: As established in professional codes of ethics, critical care nurses must be equipped to provide good (ethical) patient care. This requires ethical awareness, which involves recognizing the ethical implications of all nursing actions (ranging from the mundane to the dilemmatic). Ethical awareness is imperative in successfully addressing patient needs, however, evidence suggests that the ethical import of everyday issues may often go unnoticed by nurses in practice. Assessing nurses’ ethical awareness is a necessary first step in preparing nurses to identify and manage ethical issues in the highly dynamic critical care environment. Purpose: To use Rasch principles to develop a psychometrically sound instrument to assess the nature and extent of critical care nurses’ ethical awareness in the context of everyday nursing practice, and to assess the success of scale development using a Rasch model. Method: An item bank representing nursing actions was developed (33 items). Content validity testing with nursing ethics experts (n = 5) was performed (CVI-I = 1). Eighteen items were selected for face validity testing with graduate nursing students (n = 7). After revisions, two full-scale pilot administrations were performed to run item analyses. Sample: Critical care nurses (n = 116) at a large academic teaching hospital in New England. Results: Pilot test analyses suggest sufficient item invariance across samples and sufficient construct validity. Final analyses demonstrate a progression of items uniformly along a hierarchical continuum; items that match respondent ability levels; response categories that are sufficiently used; a Principle Components Analysis demonstrating randomness of residuals, and adequate internal consistency (Cronbach’s α = 0.83). Mean ethical awareness scores were in the low/moderate range (M = 34.9/54; logit = -0.21). Conclusion: The results of this study suggest the Ethical Awareness Scale (EAS) is a psychometrically sound, reliable, and valid measure of ethical awareness in critical care nurses

Recent estimates suggest there are roughly 1.6 million homeless children and this number is growing (National Center on Family Homelessness, 2011). This trend is particularly worrisome given that homeless children face a number of obstacles within society and education, not the least of which is negative teacher attitudes (Swick, 2000; U.S. Department of Education, 2002). This study's primary research question addressed whether a set of underlying dimensions could be identified and used to effectively measure teacher attitudes toward homeless students. A necessary part of answering this research question involved the development of a measurement scale. Both Classical Test Theory and Item Response Theory analyses aided in the elimination process of items in order to create the final Teacher Attitudes toward Homeless Students (TAHS) assessment, which includes an attitudes scale and subscales, and a related knowledge scale. The final outcome was a set of 43 items, across eight dimensions, which could effectively be used to measure teacher attitudes toward homeless students. Additionally, the findings upheld the principles of Rasch measurement, including unidimensionality, a hierarchical ordering of items, and a continuum of the construct definition. In other words, the findings indicate that the TAHS scale was successfully developed according to explicit a priori measurement criteria. Moreover, additional correlational and regression analyses provided empirical construct and convergent validity evidence for the TAHS scale. It was also found that attitudes differed slightly for teachers of various backgrounds and experiences, but when analyzed collectively these variables were not significantly related to teacher attitudes toward homeless students. Additionally, there was only a weak relationship between teachers' attitudes and their knowledge about homelessness. Overall the TAHS scale allows for reliable and accurate measurement of teacher attitudes toward homeless students from which valid inferences can be made. The TAHS scale scores and score descriptors can be used to help teacher interpret their attitude. This has the potential for a direct impact in creating equal educational opportunities for homeless students as teachers become aware of their attitude and make positive changes

The Fullerton Ontological Confusion (FOC) scale was constructed to address the issues of inconsistent theory and inadequate measurement regarding paranormal, superstitious, magical, and supernatural (PSMS) beliefs. For the FOC scale, PSMS beliefs were defined as confusions of ontology, or the misattribution of core knowledge belief categories. The FOC was empirically evaluated under an Item Response Theory framework using the nominal response model (NRM) to estimate item parameters and the Wald test to evaluate within-item category variation. Using the NRM and the Wald test, the FOC scale items were revised to yield a measure that was optimally formatted and informative. Correlational analysis was used to validate the FOC scale by testing the hypothesized relationships to theoretically related and unrelated constructs. The FOC scale was found to have a good degree of validity with most of the testable validation hypotheses being supported. Compared to the available existing measures, the FOC scale could be used as a more pure and informative measure for PSMS beliefs.

Paternal postnatal depression has begun to receive attention during the last decade. Studies have shown that the consequences of paternal and maternal postnatal depression are equally serious. There are currently no validated instrument for screening of paternal postnatal depression. In this cross-sectional study a self-report questionnaire, the Edinburgh Gotland Depression Scale (EGDS) is validated against the clinical interview SCID-CV as gold standard, and is further developed. A convenience sample of Swedish fathers (N = 95) who had children in the past year, answered an online questionnaire and a subsample (n = 52) of them were later interviewed with the SCID-CV. The revised EGDS showed improved criterion-related validity, sensitivity and specificity. The scale has problems disciminating between mildly and non-depressed fathers. A cut-off score of ≥8 on the revised EGDS results in sensitivity of 91.7 per cent and specificity of 85.0 per cent. This study should be replicated and cross-validated to provide further evidence of validity.
