Abstract:
Personality-based integrity tests are used in selection procedures to reduce the chance of hiring employees who are likely to engage in counterproductive work behaviour. This study reports the internal psychometric properties of a personality-based measure developed for this purpose. Data collected from 1353 working adults were used to investigate the internal consistency reliability and to examine construct validity with confirmatory factor analysis and Rasch analysis. Results showed that the reliability estimates for all the scales of the assessment were satisfactory. For the confirmatory factor analysis, inspection of the incremental (comparative fit index and Tucker–Lewis index) and absolute (root mean square error of approximation) goodness-of-fit values found strong support for the construct validity of all the scales. Infit statistics from Rasch analysis provided further support for construct validity, with items from all the scales fitting the Rasch model. The confirmatory and Rasch analysis demonstrated that unidimensional, coherent, and meaningful latent constructs are being measured on the Work-related Risk and Integrity Scale. Overall, results found excellent support for the internal psychometric properties of the instrument in a culturally diverse context.

Background and Purpose:To describe the development and testing of a psychometric of Family Structure and Functions (FSF) that measures parents’ ability to provide adolescent reproductive health (ARH).Methods:A cross-sectional study of Indonesian parents (n = 525). Multifactors FSF-ARH were examined using construct validity (exploratory factor analysis [EFA] and confirmatory factor analysis [CFA]) and content validity (Content Validity Index [CVI]). Internal consistency was explored using Cronbach’s α coefficient.Results:EFA revealed nine factors with 26 items accounting for 61.64% of explained variance and CFA validity testing fit for the construct validity of FSF-ARH. The CVI indicated adequate content validity (0.80–0.10) and acceptable internal consistency (0.70).Conclusions:FSF-ARH contains valid, reliable, and robust measures although some subscales performed moderate reliability, establishing the purpose for further research.

ABSTRACT Objective: To analyze the validity based on the internal structure and reliability of the Brazilian version of the Caregiver Reaction Assessment (CRA) applied to informal caregivers of dependent elderly. Method: A methodological study with 120 informal caregivers of the elderly. Validity based on the internal structure evaluated by exploratory factorial analysis, with extraction of main factorial axes, varimax orthogonal rotation and retention of factors by parallel analysis. Reliability assessed by Cronbach’s alpha. Results: The instrument revealed a factorial structure different from the original version: three factors were identified, equivalent to subscales, self-esteem, daily activities and family support, with explained variance of 42%. The values of the Cronbach alpha for the items belonging to each subscale were, respectively: 0.71, 0.81 and 0.83. Conclusion: The Brazilian version of CRA presents good evidence of validity based on internal structure and is reliable, and can be used to assess the overload of informal caregivers of dependent elderly.

Abstract Medical school selection is currently in the paradoxical situation in which selection tools may predict study outcomes, but which constructs are actually doing the predicting is unknown (the ‘black box of selection’). Therefore, our research focused on those constructs, answering the question: do the internal structures of the tests in an outcome-based selection procedure reflect the content that was intended to be measured? Downing’s validity framework was applied to organize evidence for construct validity, focusing on evidence related to content and internal structure. The applied selection procedure was a multi-tool, CanMEDS-based procedure comprised of a video-based situational judgement test (focused on (inter)personal competencies), and a written aptitude test (reflecting a broader array of CanMEDS competencies). First, we examined content-related evidence pertaining to the creation and application of the competency-based selection blueprint and found that the set-up of the selection procedure was a robust, transparent and replicable process. Second, the internal structure of the selection tests was investigated by connecting applicants’ performance on the selection tests to the predetermined blueprint using cognitive diagnostic modeling. The data indicate 89% overlap between the expected and measured constructs. Our results support the notion that the focus placed on creating the right content and following a competency-blueprint was effective in terms of internal structure: most items measured what they were intended to measure. This way of linking a predetermined blueprint to the applicants’ results sheds light into the ‘black box of selection’ and can be used to support the construct validity of selection procedures.

Emotional Intelligence Scale (EIS) is a popular EI measure. Yet, it has been criticized for an unclear factor structure, and its psychometric properties were mainly examined in the Western context. This study was to evaluate its psychometric properties based on 1,724 Hong Kong undergraduate students, including its (a) factor structure, (b) internal consistency, and (c) criterion validity. We compared different factor structures reported in the literature. The confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) results supported a six-factor structure, which is tallied with Salovey and Mayer’s EI conceptualization. A multigroup CFA also rendered the structure as gender invariant. The scale was internally consistent with high McDonald’s omega coefficients. Significant association between EI and grade point average (GPA) was revealed in the faculties with people-oriented studies. Furthermore, EI was correlated with social, cognitive, and self-growth outcomes and satisfaction of university experience. The study contributes to clarify the factor structure and provides new reliability and validity evidence of the EIS in the Eastern context.

In order to explain chemistry subjects by linking them to everyday life and accordingly, to improve the quality of education, context-based learning has come into use widely in chemistry teaching recently. The aim of this study is to develop a scale to determine secondary school students’ motivations towards chemistry activities supported with context-based learning. Validity and reliability analysis of the scale were done with the participation of 525 high school students. To determine the structural validity of the scale, exploratory factor analysis was done. The factor analysis concluded that the scale had a three-factor structure with 20 items. Cronbach Alpha internal consistency coefficient of the scale was calculated to be 0.91. Cronbach Alpha internal consistency coefficients of sub dimensions were found to be 0,84; 0,80 and 0.81 respectively. In the light of the findings of this study, the scale developed is concluded to be of use in determining high school students’ motivations towards context-based chemistry. The aim of this study was to analyze the reliability and validity evidence of scores on the Spanish version of Self-Description Questionnaire II (SDQ-II). The instrument was administered in a sample of 2022 Spanish students (51.1% boys) from grades 7 to 10. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was used to examine validity evidence based on internal structure drawn from the scores on the SDQ-II. CFA replicated the correlated 11 first-order factor structure. Furthermore, hierarchical confirmatory factor analysis (HCFA) was used to examine the hierarchical ordering of self-concept, as measured by scores on the Spanish version of the SDQ-II. Although a series of HCFA models were tested to assess academic and non-academic components organization, support for those hierarchical models was weaker than for the correlated 11 first-order factor structure. Results also indicated that scores on the Spanish version of the SDQ-II had internal consistency and test-retest reliability estimates within an acceptable range.

This three-part study aimed to translate, cross-culturally adapt, and validate the Collective Efficacy Questionnaire for Sports (CEQS) for Brazilian athletes. In Study 1, six translators and six specialists developed a Portuguese version of the CEQS (the CEQS-B), and 10 experts and 10 sports participants provided content validity evidence based on test content. In Study 2, 553 athletes completed the CEQS-B, and we provided evidence of construct and convergent validity for the test’s internal structure through factor analysis and of reliability evidence based on the instrument’s internal consistency and temporal stability. In Study 3, 79 athletes completed both the new CEQS-B and the Group Cohesion Questionnaire, and we provided evidence of concurrent validity for the CEQS-B, based on its relationship to other variables, with specific strong correlations between team task cohesion and collective efficacy among these participants. Overall, the results of this study support the use of the CEQS-B by researchers and professionals wishing to assess various sport athletes’ self-perceived collective efficacy.

IntroductionDebriefing is essential to maximise the simulation-based learning experience, but until recently, there was little guidance on an effective paediatric debriefing. A debriefing assessment tool, Objective Structured Assessment of Debriefing (OSAD), has been developed to measure the quality of feedback in paediatric simulation debriefings. This study gathers and evaluates the validity evidence of OSAD with reference to the contemporary hypothesis-driven approach to validity.MethodsExpert input on the paediatric OSAD tool from 10 paediatric simulation facilitators provided validity evidence based on content and feasibility (phase 1). Evidence for internal structure validity was sought by examining reliability of scores from video ratings of 35 postsimulation debriefings; and evidence for validity based on relationship to other variables was sought by comparing results with trainee ratings of the same debriefings (phase 2).ResultsSimulation experts’ scores were significantly positive regarding the content of OSAD and its instructions. OSAD's feasibility was demonstrated with positive comments regarding clarity and application. Inter-rater reliability was demonstrated with intraclass correlations above 0.45 for 6 of the 7 dimensions of OSAD. The internal consistency of OSAD (Cronbach α) was 0.78. Pearson correlation of trainee total score with OSAD total score was 0.82 (p<0.001) demonstrating validity evidence based on relationships to other variables.ConclusionThe paediatric OSAD tool provides a structured approach to debriefing, which is evidence-based, has multiple sources of validity evidence and is relevant to end-users. OSAD may be used to improve the quality of debriefing after paediatric simulations.

Abstract. This article presents data concerning the validity evidence of a test of word reading (TLP – Teste de Leitura de Palavras) that assesses single-word reading accuracy in Portuguese students from Grades 1 to 4. The test is composed of four vertically scaled forms, one for each grade, allowing for the evaluation of students’ word reading progression. In the internal structure-related evidence validity study, administration of the TLP to 905 Portuguese elementary students confirmed its one-dimensional structure. In the evidence based on the relationship with other variables’ study, 280 Portuguese elementary students were assessed with each TLP test form and criterion measures (reading tests, digit span, and vocabulary measures). Significant correlations were observed between results from the TLP test forms, reading instruments, short-term memory, and vocabulary measures. These results revealed adequate evidence based on internal structure and evidence based on the relationship to other variables of the TLP for the assessment of word reading accuracy in Portuguese elementary students.

Abstract:
El objetivo de la investigación fue determinar las propiedades psicométricas de la Gender Role Conflict Scale (GRCS) en varones que trabajan en el sector de comunicación en Lima Metropolitana. La muestra estuvo conformada por 337 varones, cuyo rango de edad oscila entre 23 a 58 años (M =34.00, DE = 9.39). Los instrumentos aplicados fueron la GRCS y la Escala de Pensamientos Patriarcales (EPP). En la validez basada en la estructura interna se comprobó el modelo de cuatro factores relacionados, mostrando un buen ajuste (χ²/gl = 2.06, CFI = .86 y, RMSEA = .06).  En la validez basada en relaciones con otras variables, entre los factores de la GRCS se obtuvo correlaciones altas y moderadas (valores de Pearson entre .24 y .78) y con las dimensiones de la EPP arrojó correlaciones bajas y moderadas (valores de Spearman entre .10. y .39). Los resultados del análisis de confiabilidad por consistencia interna indicaron coeficientes Omega (>.70) adecuados por cada dimensión. En general, la GRS posee adecuadas propiedades psicométricas.
The objective of the research was to determine the psychometric properties of the Gender Role Conflict Scale (GRCS) in men who work in the communication sector in Metropolitan Lima. The sample was made up of 337 men, whose age range ranged from 23 to 58 years (M = 34.00, SD = 9.39). The instruments applied were the GRCS and the Scale of Patriarchal Thoughts (EPP). In the validity based on the internal structure, the four-factor model was tested, showing a good fit (χ² / gl = 2.06, CFI = .86 and, RMSEA = .06). In the validity based on relationships with other variables, between the GRCS factors it obtained high and moderate correlations (Pearson values ​​between .24 and .78) and with the dimensions of the EPP it produced low and moderate correlations (Spearman values ​​between. 10. and .39). The results of the internal consistency reliability analysis indicated by dimension an adequate Omega coefficient (> .70) in the scale and its dimensions. In general, the GRCS has adequate psychometric properties.

[Truncated abstract] Areal bone mineral density (BMD) is measured routinely in the clinic by a quantitative radiological technique, dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). BMD is used widely to assess non-invasively but indirectly the mechanical fragility of bone and consequently is able to predict fracture risk. While BMD correlates well with in vitro measurements of bone strength it does not directly measure a mechanical property; half of incident minimally traumatic fractures in women occur with BMD values above the World Health Organisation defined threshold for osteoporosis. This arises partly because the mechanical strength of bone is dependent on its structural geometry and material strength as well as bone mineral mass. Essentially, bones fracture when load stresses exceed the mechanical capacity of the material to withstand them. The structural geometry (i.e., the amount of bone tissue and its complex three-dimensional arrangement within the macroscopic bone envelope) defines the stresses produced by a given load, while the intrinsic load capacity of the material is defined by the composition and microstructure of the bone tissue itself. Hip structural analysis (HSA) is a technique that elucidates the structural geometric component of bone strength; essentially combining information available from conventional DXA images of the proximal femur with a biomechanical beam model based on the stresses arising in a combination of pure bending and axial compression. A version of HSA has recently been released commercially, and has obtained US Food and Drug Administration approval for its clinical application. ... Given the acknowledged limitations of the HSA method when applied to 2-D projection images, a 3-D approach to structural geometry, using imaging modalities such as pQCT and QCT or a recently introduced version of DXA that mimics QCT, is indicated for the future. With that in mind and the possibility of the anthropometric phantom being adopted for future accuracy and precision assessments, improvements in the design of this phantom are recommended. Studies to better understand and verify Contents v the relevance of the 'local buckling' phenomenon as a structural geometric factor in the genesis of macro-fractures are also recommended. In summary, it is essential that superior (compared to BMD) non-invasively determined clinical predictors of bone fragility leading to fracture be investigated. Structural geometric variables are potential candidates. This has led to consideration of; (i) the need to progress beyond BMD for a more sensitive and specific bone strength measurement; (ii) theoretical advantages of structural geometry over BMD; (iii) limitations of the current HSA technique based on DXA, including those introduced by its restrictive assumptions; (iv) the value of HSA in longitudinal studies, exemplified by the 'normal' but rapid skeletal changes seen in human lactation, with possible implications for an analogous study of the menopause; and (v) an investigation, using a custom-designed anthropometric phantom, of the adaptation of HSA to certain emerging imaging modalities and methods able to resolve bone structural geometry in three dimensions.

High internal phase emulsion polymers (PolyHIPEs) are new generation materials with their high porosity and interconnected open-cell structures and finds applications in areas such as supports for catalytic systems, separation media and tissue engineering scaffolds. Styrene based PolyHIPEs are currently the most popular choice, but solvent compatibility and poor mechanical properties of these materials prevent their applications. Therefore development of new polyHIPEs with desired mechanical and cellular properties is needed to extend the range of applications. The objective of this thesis was to synthesize new polyHIPEs with different mechanical characteristics changing from ductile to elastomeric. For this purpose, acrylic based polyHIPEs with various cellular structure and mechanical characteristics were developed by using stearyl acrylate (SA), isodecyl acrylate (IDA), isobornyl methacrylate (IBMA) and divinylbenzene (DVB). All materials were highly porous (90%) and had open cellular structure with uniform voids in the range of 5.2-12.9 &

m. The PolyHIPEs produced from the monomers of SA and IDA demonstrated elastomeric property and had high ability of recovery when the applied stress is removed. IBMA based polyHIPEs were ductile and demonstrated higher Young&rsquo
s modulus and compression strength than that of conventional styrene based polyHIPEs. Therefore, by varying the composition, it became possible to alter the mechanical properties of polyHIPEs from ductile to elastomeric, without changing the interconnected cellular structures. One of the prepared IDA based polyHIPE was evaluated as stationary phase for capillary electrochromatography for the first time in literature. The column was very efficient in the separation of alkylbenzenes namely thiourea, benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, propylbenzene and butylbenzene with high column efficiency (up to 200.000 plates/m).

Abstract:
How plants from a common species pool form community has been considered from a variety of approaches. A promising approach involves the search for assembly rules based on plant functional traits. This approach has potential to provide insight into community and ecosystem processes In this research. a general and simple conceptual model based on life forms and independent of species is used as a framework for assessing the internal structure of plant communities. Plant functional traits are used to identify patterns within and between plant communities in the contrasting environments of Camp Williams, Utah, and Camp Grayling, Michigan. The conceptual model has three different functional types formed by one to three functional groups. A functional group, made up of species with similar life form, is analogous to a vegetation stratum. A functional type, consisting of one or more functional groups. is analogous to a community or vegetation type. Correspondence analysis (CA) and analysis of variance (ANOVA) indicate that richness, species diversity, and trait diversity are essentially independent of functional type and are, for example, fairly consistent regardless of climatic regime or structural complexity. Cover. on the other hand. increases with the number of functional groups in a functional type. Consistent patterns and trends for sets of functional traits support the view that assembly rules may account for internal structure in plant communities. The consistent association of sets of traits with functional groups even in taxonomically dissimilar communities suggests that the functional traits are related to fundamental ecological processes that shape these communities. Ambiguity in some of the results might be explained by extending the analysis to additional installations that replicate the climatic conditions found at Camp Williams and Camp Grayling.

Investigations into visual attention have led to the identification of locationand object-based mechanisms of attentional selection. This thesis is specifically concerned with object-based attention and aims to distinguish between two different hypotheses regarding the representations available to the inhibitory mechanisms of object-based selection. According to the global structure hypothesis, inhibitory mechanisms of selection operate over representations that do not have access to object-internal structural properties, such as surface boundaries. According to the local structure hypothesis, inhibitory selection mechanisms operate over representations that do make explicit object-internal structure. The second issue addressed in this thesis concerns the nature of object-shape representations that object-based inhibitory mechanisms operate over. Two candidate shape primitives, surfaces and volumetric components, are examined in order to ascertain whether they modulate object-based attention. These issues are addressed using the inhibition of return (IOR) paradigm (Posner & Cohen, 1984), which has previously been used to examine object-based attention (e. g. Tipper, Driver & Weaver, 199 1). The two aforementioned hypotheses make contrasting predictions about the modulation of object-based IOR by objectinternal structure. The global structure hypothesis predicts that object-based IOR should not be modulated by the object's internal structural properties, irrespective of changes in the object's internal structure. In contrast, the local structure hypothesis predicts that object internal structure will modulate the magnitude of object-based IOR. 2 The results raise a number of interesting issues. First, they show that objectbased IOR is modulated by internal discontinuities in object structure. Second, objectbased IOR operates over representations that make explicit surface properties of volumetric forms. Third, the effect is attenuated when cues and targets appear on the same surface of an object, relative to when the cue and target are separated by an internal structural discontinuity. These findings are consistent with the local structure hypothesis for objectbased attentional selection and provide new evidence (a) to suggest that inhibitory mechanisms of selection can operate over shape representations that make explicit infonnation about object internal structure, (b) about the surface-based nature of these mental representations, (c) to posit new constraints on hypotheses about the distribution of facilitation and inhibition in object-based attention.

Since the mid-twentieth century, the DSM has guided psychiatrists in categorizing disorders. Revisions have taken years, with work groups considering changes to the entire manual. A more timely and efficient approach to updating the DSM would involve continuous improvement of particular diagnostic categories, when and if supported by advances in the field. The aim is to avoid the delays in the incorporation of new knowledge that are inherent in updating at intervals of a decade or more. The American Psychiatric Association has therefore established a structure by which evidence-based proposals for changes to the DSM can be considered and adopted on an ongoing basis. This chapter describes how proposals will be considered and the standards to be applied to proposed modifications. Challenges include calibrating optimal rigor of the review process, pruning diagnoses that lack validity or clinical utility, and subjecting the process itself to iterative improvement.

A threat to external validity is any factor that limits the generalizability of an observed result. Unlike all threats to statistical conclusion and internal validities and some threats to construct validity, threats to external validity cannot ordinarily be controlled by design. Nor is there any disagreement on how threats to external validity should be controlled. In most instances, it can only be controlled by replication?—across subjects, situations and time frames. This seldom happens, unfortunately, because the academic incentive structure discourages replication. The contemporary “reproducibility crisis” was spurred by a collaborative group of social scientists attempting to replicate one hundred experimental and correlational studies published in three mainstream psychology journals. Sixty percent of replications failed to reproduce the published effect. Failures to control for threats to external validity that stem from uncontrolled variations in persons, situations, and time frames, parsimosniously explain the failure rate in this replication study.

This chapter considers issues of culture in couple therapy while examining the current movement toward empirically supported therapies (ESTs). Culture is distinguished from the related but distinct concepts of race, ethnicity, and nationality, and the value of studying culture directly is discussed. Several concerns and criticisms of empirically supported therapy criteria related to diverse couples are presented including a lack of inclusion in studies, the valuing of internal over external validity, and unexamined assumptions of universality. Cultural assumptions behind evidence-based treatments are examined with hypotheses about cultural congruency for diverse groups. Existing scholarly works on cultural aspects of the therapy approaches are highlighted. The clear need to build on existing theoretical and case-based knowledge related to culture in empirical ways is discussed.

Important issues are raised for dissemination and implementation researchers. The intended audience is first-year graduate students and advanced undergraduates in epidemiology and allied fields more broadly. To date, insufficient attention has been given to the issue of fidelity. Consideration of fidelity is necessary to balance the need for internal and external validity across the research continuum. There is also a need for a more robust literature to increase knowledge about factors that influence fidelity, strategies for maximizing fidelity, methods for measuring and analyzing fidelity, and examining sources of variability in implementation fidelity.

Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) offers an approach to quantify cycle-to-cycle variation (CCV) of the flow field inside the internal combustion engine cylinder. POD decomposes instantaneous flow fields (also called snapshots) into a series of orthonormal flow patterns (called POD modes) and the corresponding mode coefficients. The POD modes are rank-ordered by decreasing kinetic energy content, and the low-order, high-energy modes are interpreted as constituting the large-scale coherent flow structure that varies from engine cycle to engine cycle. Various POD-based analysis techniques have thus been proposed to characterize engine flow field CCV using these low-order modes. The validity of such POD-based analyses rests, as a matter of course, on the reliability of the underlying POD results (modes and coefficients). Yet a POD mode can be disproportionately skewed by a single outlier snapshot within a large data set, and an algorithm exists to define and identify such outliers. In this paper, the effects of a candidate outlier snapshot on the results of POD-based conditional averaging and quadruple POD analyses are examined for two sets of crank angle-resolved flow fields on the mid-tumble plane of an optical engine cylinder recorded by high-speed particle image velocimetry. The results with and without the candidate outlier are compared and contrasted. In the case of POD-based conditional averaging, the presence of the outlier scrambles the composition of snapshot subsets that define large-scale flow pattern variations, and thus substantially alters the coherent flow structures that are identified; for quadruple POD, the shape of coherent structures as well as the number of modes to define them are not significantly affected by the outlier.

Quality communication between a teacher and a student or students contributes to the process of learning not only a foreign language. Contrarily, fear of communication can significantly harm communication. The present study provides information on the process and results of scale adaptation, which measures foreign language anxiety (Horwitz, Horwitz & Cope, 1986). The process of adaptation to Czech conditions included the verification of content validity, construct validity, and the identification of a factor structure of the instrument. Based on the results of the exploratory factor analysis in the STATISTICA 13.3 program, a reduction from thirty-three to thirteen items was proposed. The internal consistency of the adapted Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale showed a sufficient Cronbach's alpha coefficient of 0.82.

Beam-like structure is known as one of crucial engineering structures in practical application of aerospace, vessel, civil and machinery. The damages have a great influence on machine performance and may cause a serious threat for security of mechanical structures and systems. Thus it is very significant to identify the damage of beam-like structures for security of mechanical structures and systems. This paper presents a novel application of wavelet finite element method (WFEM) in Lamb wave propagation of beam-like structures. The WFEM, adopting excellent B-spline wavelet on interval (BSWI) basis as approximating functions, has been verified to possess some superiorities for structural dynamic analysis and damage detection. The motion equations of Lamb wave propagation are derived according to Hamilton’s principle and two-dimensional wavelet-based element is constructed by adopting BSWI scaling functions. The damage, which is modeled as open crack with duplicate nodes, is considered in beam-like structures and corresponding damage model is also added in proposed wavelet finite element model. Then central difference method in time domain is employed for wave propagation simulation. Firstly, the validity and accuracy of proposed WFEM are demonstrated on a beam-like structure without crack by comparing with traditional finite element method (FEM) using 2D plane element. What’s more, the obtained velocities of fundamental S0 and A0 mode waves are also compared with Lamb theoretical results to verify the validity and accuracy of proposed model once more. Then the wave propagation in beam-like structures with crack are performed and the process and interaction between Lamb wave and damage are analyzed and discussed in detail. The reflected mode wave and converted mode wave for incident wave interacting with crack are also observed in wave motion snapshots. In summary, this paper presents an accurate but simple and effective numerical method for wave propagation of beam-like structures.

Abstract:
This paper investigates the experimental dynamics of a beam structure that supports an attached rigid body and that can impact a comparatively compliant base structure. The problem area is motivated by impact phenomena that are observed in certain structures internal to nuclear reactors. The assembly is subjected to base excitation at specified frequency and acceleration, and the resulting displacement and velocity time histories are recorded and used to obtain spectra, phase diagrams, and Poincare´ sections. The measurements validate simulation results obtained by using a constraint and modal mapping method based on the two sets of modes when the structure is in-contact, and when it is not-in-contact. Generalized coordinates are mapped across the impact discontinuities in the modal representation. The forced response simulation predicts the test specimen's response over a range of excitation frequencies. The specimens are fabricated as single integral structures from acrylnitrile butadene styrene plastic through rapid prototyping technology in order to eliminate the undesirable dissipation and flexibility arising from joints and connections. The experimental system can exhibit complex response characteristics, and the influences on complexity of deadband clearance and of asymmetry in the point of impact are examined in the experiments.

Abstract:
In this paper, a research on dynamic behavior of a diesel engine block is carried out in Finite Element Method (FEM). Natural frequencies and Modal shapes are obtained by FEM calculation. In order to validate the calculation result, a mode experiment is conducted by a single pulse excitation method. In the experiment, the natural frequencies, modal shapes and modal damping of the engine block are determined. Besides, based on the acquired vibration mode, the weak positions on this block are identified. Additionally, in order to acquire the experimental results accurately, some important factors included in this experiment such as the choice of excitation methods, structure supports, sensor installation and so on, should be given careful considerations. Comparison between the calculated results and the test data shows that the FEM model is reliable.

Abstract:
Many empirical formulae have been proposed for evaluating the local damage to reinforced concrete structures caused by rigid projectile impact. Most of these formulae are based on impact tests perpendicular to the target structures. To date, few impact tests oblique to the target structures have been conducted. In this study, we aim to obtain a new formula for evaluating the local damage caused by oblique impacts based on previous experimental and simulation results. We analyze and simulate the local damage owing to impact by deformable projectiles. The experimental and simulation results were in good agreement and confirmed the validity of the proposed analytical method. Furthermore, the internal energy of the deformable projectile absorbed upon impact was approximately 60% of the total energy. In comparison to a rigid projectile, it is possible to reduce the impact load and consequently the damage to the target.

<p>Reinforced concrete structures are subjected to several sources of deterioration that can reduce their load-resisting capacity over time. This has significant consequences for the management of infrastructure, leading to high costs of maintenance, repair, strengthening and premature decommissioning. Assessing the residual capacity of structures is challenging but paramount to manage the infrastructure network effectively. Corrosion of the internal steel reinforcement is among the main causes of deterioration in reinforced concrete bridges. The subsequent reduction in steel-to-concrete bond strength is difficult to evaluate with accuracy. There is no unified theory of general validity. Most existing models adopt measures of the level of corrosion as the key parameter to evaluate the bond reduction. In this paper, a different approach is investigated. Corrosion-induced splitting crack widths are used as the fundamental indicator of bond strength reduction, irrespective of the associated degree of steel corrosion. Available experimental results on deformed steel bars embedded in concrete subjected to either natural or accelerated corrosion, with or without transverse reinforcement, are analysed and compared with a different perspective. The analysis indicates that this new splitting crack-based approach can lead to more accurate predictions. This contributes to a better understanding of the fundamental principles underlying bond of corroded reinforcing bars. Enhanced assessment strategies can lead to a reduction of the safety risks, maintenance costs and environmental footprint of the infrastructure network.</p>

To address chronically low primary school completion rates and the disconnect between learners’ skills at the end of primary school and the skills learners need to thrive in secondary school identified in many low- and middle-income countries, more investment is needed to improve the quality of teaching and learning in upper primary grades. Accordingly, we provide guidelines for improving five components of upper primary education: (1) In-service teacher professional development and pre-service preparation to improve and enhance teacher quality; (2) a focus on mathematics, literacy, and core content-area subjects; (3) assessment for learning; (4) high-quality teaching and learning materials; and (5) positive school climates. We provide foundational guiding principles and recommendations for intervention design and implementation for each component. Additionally, we discuss and propose how to structure and design pre-service teacher preparation and in-service teacher training and ongoing support, fortified by materials design and assessment, to help teachers determine where learners are in developmental progressions, move learners towards mastery, and differentiate and support learners who have fallen behind. We provide additional suggestions for integrating a whole-school climate curriculum, social-emotional learning, and school-related gender-based violence prevention strategies to address the internal and societal changes learners often face as they enter upper primary.

Abstract:
The article examines the world and Ukrainian history of corporate periodicals. The main purpose of this study is to reproduce an objective global picture of the emergence and formation of corporate periodicals, taking into account the business and socio-economic context. Accordingly, its tasks are to compare the conditions and features of corporate media genesis in different countries, to determine the main factors of their development, as well as to clarify the transformations of the terminological apparatus. The research is based on mostly foreign secondary scientific works published from 1915 to the present time. The literature was studied using methods such as overview, historical, functional and thematic analysis, description, and generalization. A systematic approach was used to determine the role and place of each element in the system, as well as to comprehensively consider the object in the general historical context and within the current scientific discourse. The method of systematization made it possible to establish internal and external connections, patterns and contradictions in the development of the object of study. The main historical milestones on this path are identified, examples of the first successful corporate publications and their contribution to business development, public relations, and corporate communications are considered. It was found that corporate media emerged in the mid-nineteenth century spontaneously, on the wave of practical business needs in response to industrialization, company increase, staff growth, and consumer market development. Their appearance preceded the formation of the public relations industry and changed the structure of the information space. The scientific significance of this research is that the historical look at the evolution of corporate media provides an understanding of their place, influence, capabilities, and growing communicative role in the digital age.
