Abstract:
Focusing on Joyce Wieland’s film portrait Pierre Vallières (1972), this article follows the Canadian artist and filmmaker’s practice as it evolved through her engagement with the New York film avant-garde of the 1960s. Through an analysis of Wieland’s collaboration with Shirley Clarke, I will also discuss Pierre Vallières in relation to US-American documentary practices from the same period. Referring to Clarke’s Portrait of Jason (1967) with its focus on the spoken word as well as Andy Warhol’s Screen Tests, I will place Wieland’s film within this line of film portraits engaging with identity and a performative notion of subjectivity. Drawing on Gilles Deleuze, this article concludes with a close reading of Wieland’s film, discussing her use of the close-up as a means of thwarting the linear narrative and logic of its subject’s political speech. Pierre Vallières’ politics thus emerges within an aesthetics that crosses the boundaries of documentary and avant-garde, communicating with audiences beyond the film’s original context of French-Canadian emancipation.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Carrier’s novel was published in the same year as Nègres blancs d’Amérique by Pierre Vallières and it relies on the same dialectics between the colonizer and the colonized that was prevalent in Québécois narrative prose in the 1960s. While being grounded in this cultural context, Carrier transforms this dialectic by setting his narrative in a rural environment and against the background of World War II (the visitation of a fallen French-Canadian soldier whose remains are escorted to his native village by English-Canadian comrades). Such aesthetic reworking complexifies the ideological message of Carrier’s novel. I will study the interplay between national ideology and Carrier’s narratives strategies and particularly on the clash between ethnic stereotypes and the « carnavalesque » and the grotesque.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT The general aim of this study was identifying the motivational level of students in Accounting and Economics regarding the search for a stricto sensu graduate degree. Also, it sought to determine the variables that significantly influence the motivation of these individuals. Having the Self-Determination Theory as a basis, a questionnaire was prepared resorting to the Academic Motivation Scale developed by Vallerand, Pelletier, Blais, Brière, Senécal, and Vallières (1992), and translated into Portuguese by Sobral (2003). The database contains observations of 173 university students from public institutions in Minas Gerais, Brazil, which provided courses in Accounting and Economics. The methodological procedure consisted in conducting a non-parametric test of mean values for the Motivation Self-Determination Index (MSI) of students, in calculating the correlations between the MSI and individual characteristics of students, and finally in estimating multiple linear regressions. Research results indicated that students in Accounting showed no difference regarding the motivational level when compared to students in Economics. It was also possible to notice that women, older students, scientific initiation scholarship holders, those from lower socioeconomic backgrounds, and those whose mothers have higher educational level tend to have a rather self-determined motivation. Additionally, it was found that insertion into the labor market increases self-determined motivation to pursue a stricto sensu Master's degree only in the case of students in Accounting. The research was limited to the fact that the sample only included students of public education institutions from Minas Gerais. For future research, it is suggested that the procedures of this study be replicated in privet institution and in different states.

Abstract:
Abstract Downregulation of surface epitopes causes post-immunotherapy relapses in B-lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL). Here we demonstrate that mRNA encoding CD22 undergoes aberrant splicing in B-ALL. We describe the plasma-membrane-bound CD22 Δex5-6 splice isoform resistant to CAR-T cells targeting the third immunoglobulin-like domain of CD22. We also describe splice variants skipping the AUG-containing exon 2 and failing to produce any identifiable protein; therefore, this event is rate-limiting for epitope presentation. Indeed, forcing exon 2 skipping with Morpholino oligonucleotides reduced CD22 protein expression and conferred resistance to the CD22-directed antibody-drug conjugate inotuzumab in vitro. Furthermore, among inotuzumab-treated pediatric B-ALL patients, we identified one non-responder in whose blasts Δex2 isoforms comprised the majority of CD22 transcripts. In a second patient, a sharp reduction in CD22 protein levels during relapse was driven entirely by increased CD22 exon 2 skipping. Thus, dysregulated CD22 splicing is a major mechanism of epitope downregulation and ensuing resistance to immunotherapy. Citation Format: Sisi Zheng, Elisabeth Gillespie, Ammar S. Naqvi, Katharina E. Abstract:
I would like to begin by disputing emphatically Gerald Beasley’s contention that librarians never become rich and famous. Sir Anthony Panizzi (1797–1879), Principal Librarian of the British Museum, was both, and so was Jorge Luis Borges (1899–1986), Director of the National Library in Buenos Aires. Well, perhaps Panizzi was not exactly a celebrity, and perhaps the source of Borges’s fame and riches was not his role as the National Librarian of Argentina. But what about the Abbé Rive, librarian to the Duc de la Vallière? He was infamous, if not famous, for being one of the most irascible . . .
