Abstract:
Chapter 2 focuses on what a business model is and what it affords: it is a unique mix of activities which results in value creation and delivers value appropriation and competitive advantage. Competitive advantage can be sustained only for a limited period, so firms must innovate their business model – through replication or through renewal. Replication means firms scale up and improve their existing business model over time, for example, McDonald’s and IKEA. Renewal involves firms bringing in a brand new, very different business model, for example, DSM, which has reinvented itself several tim

Through diverse engagements with natural resource extraction and ecological vulnerability in the contemporary Arctic, contributors to this volume apprehend Arctic resource regimes through the concept of abstraction. Abstraction refers to the creation of new material substances and cultural values by detaching parts from existing substances and values. The abstractive process differs from the activity of extractive industries by its focus on the conceptual resources that conceal processes of exploitation associated with extraction. The study of abstraction can thus help us attune to the formal

This chapter explores the wide-ranging imitation and appropriation of Grattius in Europe during the sixteenth to the eighteenth centuries following the rediscovery of the text in the early years of the sixteenth century. Particular attention is focused on Giovanni Darcio’s poem, Canes (1543), Girolamo Fracastoro’s poem, Alcon (attested from at least 1555), and Jacques Vanière’s version of the Cynegetica in the sixteenth and final book of his magisterial work, Praedium Rusticum (1730). The chapter demonstrates how these authors were attracted to Grattius’ poem for his focus on (animal) medicine

This chapter clarifies the place that natural resources should have within an egalitarian theory, as one important set of advantages and disadvantages amongst many which drive access to wellbeing. It rejects some rival views which suggest that natural resources are the only things that matter from the point of view of distributive justice, or that natural resources or their value are the only thing we should distribute so as to bring us closer to equality. It claims instead that natural resources are, in a slogan, ‘tremendously important but nothing special’ as drivers of human wellbeing. It t

Changes in public funding of higher education have affected cost, price, and access. State budgets have become more volatile in recent years, and this has increased budget uncertainty for public institutions. In addition, the real value of state appropriation has trended downward in most states for many years. Public universities continue to fall further behind selective private competitors in spending per student. Falling quality at many public universities affects time to graduation and graduation rates, and the burden falls disproportionately on less-well-off students. We risk a bifurcation

Abstract There are many aesthetic cultures, and groups with different aesthetic cultures can come in contact with one another, sometimes resulting in conflict. An aesthetic injustice is a failure of policies in large-scale social arrangements to manage the contact well and avoid conflict. This book articulates and defends the cosmopolitan theory of aesthetic injustice: a large-scale social arrangement is aesthetically unjust when and only when it harms people in their capacities as aesthetic agents, thereby subverting interests in the value diversity and social autonomy of aesthetic cultures.

All publicity is good publicity? Perhaps not. In recent years, multiple local and global fashion brands have been called out for cultural appropriation, racism, misogyny, and even flirting with fascism. Understanding Fashion Scandals is the first book to explore this changing landscape of contemporary fashion through case studies showing how ‘shock value’ lost its currency. The book focuses on the changes since the late-1970s and early 1980s, when brands like Calvin Klein and Benetton first used controversy as a promotional tool to build their brand identity, to the contemporary industry where

This chapter explores the contacts and conflict between novelistic point of view and the practice of cinematic spectatorship. It focuses on H. D.’s singular contributions to the film journal Close Up (1927–1933). This film criticism was an important context for developing the forms of prose experimentation that would occupy her during the early 1930s. In detaching vision from a presumed subject, H. D. found that film asks its viewers not only to see but to translate encrypted “abstract . . . remote . . . symbolical” meanings from the “raw-picked” images that pass across the screen. This litera
