Due to changes in the labour market over the last thirty years adult education has developed significantly. Adult education is becoming an integral part of every person’s life and advancement towards certain goals. Many adults attempt to learn independently, by using information technology. This paper illustrates the central role of persistence in estimating and interpreting value-added models of learning. Using data from Pakistani public and private schools, we apply dynamic panel methods that address three key empirical challenges: imperfect persistence, unobserved heterogeneity, and measurement error. Our estimates suggest that only one-fifth to one-half of learning persists between grades and that private schools increase average achievement by 0.25 standard deviations each year. In contrast, value-added models that assume perfect persistence yield severely downward estimates

Using expert samples to improve the performance of reinforcement learning (RL) algorithms has become one of the focuses of research nowadays. However, in different application scenarios, it is hard to guarantee both the quantity and quality of expert samples, which prohibits the practical application and performance of such algorithms. In this paper, a novel RL decision optimization method is proposed. The proposed method is capable of reducing the dependence on expert samples via incorporating the decision-making evaluation mechanism. By introducing supervised learning (SL), our method optimi

Value guides behavior. With knowledge of stimulus values and action consequences, behaviors that maximize expected reward can be selected. Prior work has identified several brain structures critical for representing both stimuli and their values. Yet, it remains unclear how these structures interact with one another and with other regions of the brain to support the dynamic acquisition of value-related knowledge. Here, we use a network neuroscience approach to examine how BOLD functional networks change as 20 healthy human subjects learn the values of novel visual stimuli over the course of fo

The incentive value learning theory states that the value assigned to a resource depends on the motivational state of an animal when it first encounters that resource. The present experiment investigated whether domestic hens, Gallus domesticus, assign different incentive values to a novel food depending on their deprivation state when they encounter this novel food. Hens were first trained to find a novel food type hidden under wood shavings in a large food dish. Then, after half of the animals were food-deprived and half left not food-deprived, all hens were re-exposed to the novel food in a
