Abstract:
Value stream mapping (VSM) is a visualization tool helps to understand processes by using of stream lined work process. The importance of this process is to decrease the activity that does not add value to the final product and in order to increase the efficiency and production.   The purpose of this thesis is to create dynamic value stream maps of a process by using simulation. By creating dynamic value stream maps makes it possible to analyze more complex systems than traditional VSM. Simulation can be used with value stream mapping to give it power and flexibility in order to dynamically change the state of the system.   The spiral welding production line has been working for many years. The company is facing an increase in the demand along with possibilities of later product development so that they could get more efficiency, less costs, higher quality, and a dynamic workforce plan according to the varying demand. This cannot be achieved unless studying the process inside out and finding new areas that have the potential for improvement. In this thesis I have tried to investigating these areas and the focus is on finding solutions for improving them.   This thesis work performs at the production process of spiral welding steel plates for analysis the buffers, calculate cycle, process time and reduce waste by using VSM and DVSM. It has been trying to provide readers with a clear prospective of the company, a precise analysis on the mentioned production line and apparently areas of improvement in the production process.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Value Stream Mapping is a common tool used in a lot of instances in today’s industrieswho have adopted any kind of Lean initiatives. However, Value Stream Mapping (VSM) may not always fit to the best extent and intention of the industry applying it; therefore a need for tailoring certain aspects of it have been seen in some cases where the original tool has not been enough. However there is little research on how to adopt VSM towards the tire industry, it is the case that some adaptation is needed in order to fully map the value the chain is trying to capture as seen by some authors who use VSM on other industries. This leads to conclude that further research is needed in order to see the benefits and chal-lenges in the creating of a tailored value stream tool in order to understand how it would affect the company its applied on as well as increasing the knowledge of its capabilities and drivers for it application. The impact this research would have is to begin bridging a gap of the usage of how a Tai-lored Value Stream Mapping (TVSM) tool would affect when applied to a specific industry. For this paper, a case study within a Tire Company located in Europe, who stated that they had issues regarding their current usage and utilization of VSM, was conducted. The com-pany has projects going all over the globe but sees a lack of initiative and success without the direct involvement of its central plant. The purpose of this research is to investigate the perceived impact as well as the benefits and challenges of utilizing a company TVSM, in-stead of a standardized one, taking into consideration both particularities of the industry, as well as the culture of the firm. Also an understanding is sought to recognize the motiva-tions that drove the Tire Company to choose a tailored approach. The research was conducted as a qualitative single case study involving three different sitesbelonging to the tire industry located in Europe. It is built upon both a theoretical part, comprised by a literature review of the concepts of VSM, Lean and TVSM; and an empiri-cal part derived from the case. The Empirical data was collected through semi-structured interviews as well as participant observations, supported by secondary data collected from the company in form of written documents concerning the internal training of VSM. The findings concluded that, the reasons for sustaining a TVSM are its ease of use, and ability to reach out and be understood by people with little to no training in VSM’s. The company fitted training documents would decrease the training needed and the time spent doing so. Some other benefits were the empowerment of employees and the sharing of knowledge across multiple sites in a standardized company language. Albeit with the chal-lenge of creating and upholding such documents and training, compelling the company to have experts with knowledge of VSM and the company processes and culture with the added challenge of also maintaining regularly updates as the company moves forward. Implementation of a tailored approach is practical where there has been identified that it exists a gap between different plants or departments, local or globally, regarding knowledge or experience when there is a requirement for standardisation, communication and need for change.

Abstract:
Due to a changing competitive environment, SMEs have to improve their production performance. A commonly applied philosophy to improve production performance is called lean thinking. This method, derived from the Toyota Production System, banishes wasteful activities while increasing the competitive strength and responsiveness of a company. Many companies fail in their attempt to become lean and therefore techniques are needed to guide the implementation. This thesis proposes to use Value Stream Mapping as an implementation technique for SMEs. This technique is tested in a company as a case study. By applying the Value Stream Mapping tool to a specific process within this company, substantial improvement potential is revealed. Work content can be decreased by 30,3 percent, and delivery time and in-factory lead time can be decreased by at least 38,6 percent and 68 percent respectively. The thesis concludes that lean thinking is applicable to SMEs, at least under certain circumstances. Furthermore, Value Stream Mapping can be a valuable tool in revealing improvement potential.

Abstract:
This paper explores the concept of Value Stream Analysis and Mapping (VSA/M) as applied to Product Development (PD) efforts. Value Stream Analysis and Mapping is a method of business process improvement. The application of VSA/M began in the manufacturing community. PD efforts provide a different setting for the use of VSA/M. Site visits were made to nine major U.S. aerospace organizations. Interviews, discussions, and participatory events were used to gather data on (1) the sophistication of the tools used in PD process improvement efforts, (2) the lean context of the use of the tools, and (3) success of the efforts. It was found that all three factors were strongly correlated, suggesting success depends on both good tools and lean context. Finally, a general VSA/M method for PD activities is proposed. The method uses modified process mapping tools to analyze and improve process.

Abstract:
The Construction Tools & Organization (CTO) division of Atlas Copco India is growing and demonstrating positive business results, however, it is faced with challenges due to rapid growth. The production lead times are 25-30% longer than its sister factory in Kalmar, which causes excess inventory and unnecessary costs. There is a need for investigating how lead times can be reduced. The aim of this study was to develop suggestions on how production lead times can be reduced. The study used concepts of Lean Management and the Value Stream Mapping tool to analyze and examine value and non-value adding activities, to reduce wasteful operations, to improve quality within processes and to simplify and standardize working methods. Delimitations were set to investigate one single product component and product type; the CP1230 Breaker and CP1230 cylinder. Research approach was of deductive method, information gathering was done in the form of literature review, personal observations and interviews, i.e. qualitative and quantitative methods were used to reach the objectives. The analysis highlighted over-processing, excess transportation and inventory issues in the material flow and the following suggestions were concluded: • Enhance employee satisfaction by rotating personnel in different stations. • Visualize work methods and weekly planning on approachable boards to standardize work and ensure quality of outcome. • Reduce and eliminate inspection processes by training suppliers and sub-contractors in quality assurance. • Sequence material in honing operations to reduce change-over times. • Outsource heat treatment operations to save resources and lead time. The following recommendations would allow for a 24,6% or 68,3% reduction in lead time, depending on choosen solutions, according to the authors’ estimations. The study was a part of the MG202X: Master Degree Project in Industrial Engineering and Management of the Royal Institute of Technology and was conducted in Atlas Copco Nasik, India and Stockholm, Sweden. On-site analysis lasted for 12 weeks and the thesis was finalized in Stockholm for a total duration of 30 weeks.

Abstract:
The Value Stream Mapping (VSM) is one of the Lean Production tools that has been widely discussed in the literature for mapping production processes and services with a focus on reduction of waste and non-value added time. Despite the growing number of publications on the subject, the academic literature reveals the absence of systematic research to present the state of the art. Thus, this dissertation, through a systematic and thorough review of the literature, aims to gather information on the VSM to identify its main characteristics, trends and opportunities for new developments and future research. The review includes 263 abstracts and 91 articles selected for review and classification. The study proposes a synthesis in the form of framework, presenting as VSM is adopted in certain contexts and motivations, tracing a better understanding of how the tool is implemented and their outputs and outcomes that can be generated. It was noticed that the VSM is rapidly spreading to the service sector, especially health care and logistics. However, studies have reported that the implementation of the VSM in practice is a time consuming process. Problems related to resistance in improvements involving changes in the workforce and demand for limited internal resources, have stimulated some researchers to question the use of the tool. This dissertation contributes to a better understanding of the topic and provides directions for future research and VSM practices.

Value stream mapping is a technique that uses icons to map the flow of product through a manufacturing system. These icons are aided by summary statistics to further detail the specific manufacturing system. The value stream mapping process usually consists of defining the current state of the system and then, using the principles of lean manufacturing, mapping an improved future system state. Although this is the popular technique, variants and refinements of it exist. This work examines the various techniques of value stream mapping and the methods used to evaluate value stream maps to improve manufacturing systems. The past and current research into value stream mapping and the methods to analyze these maps are compared and contrasted. A set of core analysis questions is developed that summarize the various value stream mapping methodologies. The application of these questions to an enhanced value stream map is developed as a tool, hybrid value stream mapping. Hybrid value stream mapping is then used to analyze the current state value stream map of a manufacturing process, the forging of automotive ring gears. The answers to the core analysis questions enabled the identification of weaknesses in the manufacture of ring gears and suggested system-wide problems. To further clarify and suggest means to rectify these weaknesses, methods beyond the scope of value stream mapping were utilized. By using systems based on standard inventory theory, economic production quantities, techniques to improve information visibility, and methods to enhance production equipment savings of over $4.7 million net present value were discovered for the ring gear production process.

This thesis explores of Value Stream Analysis and Mapping (VSA/M) as applied to Product Development (PD) efforts. It contains three parts: the background and history of PD VSA/M, a report of the current PD VSA/M practices within the U.S. aerospace industry, and the proposal of a general VSA/M method for Product Development activities. Value Stream Analysis and Mapping is a method used for business process and product improvement, which originated with the development of the Lean business philosophy. The VSA/M background section includes a brief history of the method as described in foundational Lean literature. As with Lean practices in general, the application of VSA/M began in the manufacturing community, and has seen excellent results. However, the engineering and design efforts of Product Development provide a unique setting for the use of VSA/M. The report of current PD VSA/M practices within the U.S. aerospace industry focuses on the research results taken from site visits to nine major Product Development sites. The VSA/M tools used at the sites are characterized and ranked in sophistication. The business context surrounding the use of the tools is also characterized and ranked. The reduction of the research data and this analysis shows the importance of both tool sophistication and the surrounding context in the success of a PD VSA/M exercise. The proposal of a general VSA/M method for Product Development activities includes an outline for implementation. This outline is supported with a discussion of associated principles and the application of selected tools. The proposed method follows a pattern of analyzing and mapping the Current State of a process, and using heuristics to analyze and map an improved Future State. The tools used to accomplish this analysis and mapping include (1) a high-level Gantt chart or Ward/LEI map, (2) a detailed-level Process Flow map, and (3) a detailed-level Design Structure Matrix.

In June 2014 Brazil hosted the FIFA World Cup and in August 2016 Rio de Janeiro hosts the Summer Olympics. These two seminal sporting events will draw tens of thousands of air travelers through Brazil’s airports, airports that are currently in the midst of a national modernization program to address years of infrastructure neglect and insufficient capacity. Raising Brazil’s major airports up to the standards air travelers experience at major airports elsewhere in the world is more than just a case of building or remodeling facilities, processes must also be examined and reworked to enhance traveler experience and satisfaction. This research paper examines the key interface between airports and airline passengers—airport check-in procedures—according to how much value and waste there is associated with them. In particular, the paper makes use of a value stream mapping construct for services proposed by Martins, Cantanhede, and Jardim (2010). The uniqueness of this construct is that it attributes each activity with a certain percentage and magnitude of value or waste which can then be ordered and prioritized for improvement. Working against a fairly commonly expressed notion in Brazil that Brazil’s airports are inferior to the airports of economically advanced countries, the paper examines Rio’s two major airports, Galeão International and Santos Dumont in comparison to Washington D.C.’s Washington National and Dulles International airports. The paper seeks to accomplish three goals: - Determine whether there are differences in airport passenger check-in procedures between U.S. and Brazilian airports in terms of passenger value - Present options for Brazilian government or private sector authorities to consider adopting or implementing at Brazilian airports to maximize passenger value - Validate the Martins et al. construct for use in evaluating the airport check-in procedures Observations and analysis proved surprising in that all airports and service providers follow essentially the same check-in processes but execute them differently yet still result in similar overall performance in terms of value and waste. Although only a few activities are categorized as completely wasteful (and therefore removed in the revised value stream map of check-in activities), the weighting and categorization of individual activities according to their value (or waste) presents decision-makers a means to prioritize possible corrective actions. Various overall recommendations are presented based on this analysis. Most importantly, this paper demonstrates the viability of using the construct developed by Martins et al to examine airport operations, as well as its applicability to the study of other service industry processes.

The concepts of value and value stream are crucial to the philosophy of Lean, and a better understanding of how these concepts relate to product development (PD) is essential for the creation of a Lean PD strategy. This thesis focuses on value by looking at PD processes through two different value perspectives: Product Development Value Stream Mapping and Earned Value Management. Product Development Value Stream Maps (PDVSMs) were created for two different PD projects, and the tasks from the maps were analyzed for how they each create value. The official value measurement for the two projects, Earned Value Management System data, was analyzed and compared to the PDVSMs. This comparison of the two value perspectives proved valuable, as it showed that despite some misalignments, they are congruent. The comparison also highlighted several flaws in EVMS. Finally, a combined EVMS/PDVSM hybrid management tool is proposed and discussed.

Abstract:
Abstract This report refer to a process industry mapping method called “Value Stream Mapping” aimed to increase the efficacy in the production chain applying the mindset of Lean Production. Value Stream Mapping provides a visually clear overview of production and provides information about stock levels, machine cycle time and setup time. Besides this, the machines' reliability is found in the report along with the shifts in use. The report provides the background to this mapping method and why Lean is applicable and the benefits this provides. The report explains the limitations made, presents a purpose and a method to achieve this. The report presents a study of a company that is referenced to “Processindustri AB”, this study provides the information necessary to conduct such a mapping. The background of the work was "Processindustri AB” 's long lead times in production and the flexibility problem that needs to be solved. There are problems in the material flow where a pushing flow creates big stocks between the processes and generates long lead times. Materials that may be in store for a long time may have problems with oxidation of the surface layer, which may cause the material to be scrapped or of inferior quality that is noticed later in the production chain. The goal is, by using mapping and Lean, streamlining the production flow and reduce throughput times. The report goes into detail on what information is needed and why it is vital for the mapping. It also presents a “future state map” aimed at reducing the throughput time and reduces inventory levels. The report explains the thinking around these improvements and the limitations made by practical problems. By visiting the company and follow the steps the mapping method proposed has the mapping established. The problems found in production have been discussed with the employees and also the attitudes to changes are discussed in the report. Finally the two mappings are compared and the benefits the suggested improvements will lead to are structured. The results are discussed and summarized in a conclusion and the work is critically examined. Finally, suggestions for further work are taken in consideration. The conclusions and the potential results that were developed through this study are presented in chapter 5. By applying this improvement strategy large potential changes can be implemented in “Processindustri AB” to get a more cost efficient and competitive production. According to the “future state mapping” the lead-time for “helstångsborr” can be reduced from 11.25 to 3 days. “Konstänger” can be reduced from 10 to 4.33 days. This is a result of reduced stock levels as referred to figure 4 on page 15. In order to make these changes an increased supply range from the supplier is require from three to five times a week. However, this will affect the production outside the extent of this study. These implementations would reduce the amount held in inventory from 2 772 000 SEK to 1 164 000 SEK. A decrease of total 1 608 000 SEK.

This project has the goal to supply a managing tool complete, in a way that it capacitates people that use it a valuable source of information. Value Stream Mapping is a tool of stream managing: of information, materials and of process/persons, which target is to standout the processes and streams that generates value and those that does not generate value. So, and taken the fact that C.A.C.I.A. needs a tool that improves their performance, it was proposed the implementation and application of this tool for the production of the main products of the 5-speed gearbox: Input Shaft, Main Shaft, 1ª/2ª/3ª/4ª/5ª Input Gear, 5ª Main Gear and Gear Final. Once that this tool is “new” for the organization, it was decided to start by applying in it in the main and most important manufacturing processes, been able to extend this work to others sectors afterwards. Therefore, it was created the Current State and Future State Maps, for each component manufacturing process, plus the Value Stream Map for all of these announced processes. In the last part of this project it can be found the conclusions that was able for me to withdraw, along with, an evaluation of the whole experience throughout the case study.

Abstract:
This research work proposes a new methodology for implementing Value Stream Mapping, in processes that feature a High-Mix, Low-Volume product base.   The opportunity for adapting the methodology singularly for these types of environments was identified because implementing Value Stream Mapping as proposed in Learning to See features several drawbacks when implemented in High-Mix, Low-Volume.  Although Value Stream Mapping has been proven to enhance many types of processes, its advantages are shrunk if they are implemented in High-Mix, Low-Volume processes.   High-Mix, Low-Volume processes are types of processes in which a high variety of finished goods are produced in relatively low amounts.  The high variety of finished goods causes several complications for the implementation of flow.  The difficulties that prevent the flow are the following: The variance in the products: With hundreds, or sometimes thousands of possible finished goods, the number of products causes a non-repetitive process. The variance in the routings:  All of the products that are produced can have completely different process routings, or order of stations it has to visit.  This makes the application of production lines quite difficult. The variance in the cycle times for each process.  Each of the different products can have completely different capacity requirements at a specific machine, which limits the predictability of the process.   This purpose of the thesis is to gather the best practices for controlling and improving High-Mix, Low-Volume processes and merge them with some innovative ideas to create an inclusive Value Stream Mapping methodology which is better fitted with the types of complications in High-Mix, Low-Volume environments.  In parallel, the methodology is tested with the company: Boston Scientific, in their Ureteral Stents manufacturing process.   The real-life experimentation will allow for the fine-tuning of the methodology, in order to truly create impact in the process.

Abstract:
Titel: Value stream mapping in practice – A case study at Light My FireAuthors: David Rydman and Tomas Önnemar Mentor: Veronica Ülgen Svensson Examiner: Åsa Gustafsson Background: Companies push their prices in today's markets to be competitive, which means that companies need to find ways to reduce costs while maintaining profits. (Cudney, 2009) According to Bergman and Klefsjö 2007, the basic rule of quality improvement says "there is always a way to achieve higher quality at a lower cost". One way is to improve a company's processes to get a more efficient flow and improvements that may cut costs. (Bergman & Klefsjö, 2007) Why it's important to look at the processes are that they often contain waste that can be eliminated. Waste are activities that consume resources but don't add any value. (Hines & Rich, 1997) To identify and eliminate waste within the value streams the tool value stream mapping was developed. The tool identifies the entire value stream of production, starting from the received product until it is sent to the customer, to provide a picture of the non-value adding activities. (Braglia, Carmignani, & Zammori, 2006) Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to identify Light My Fire's production flows with value stream mapping to identify improvement opportunities and then draw a future value stream map based on the identified improvement opportunities. Method: We have used a case study method and collected materials by conducting unstructured interviews and observations. Conclusions: We have created a future value stream map for the company Light My Fire from identified opportunities for improvement that has been found in the value stream map and from the future value stream map the study has come up with suggestions for improvement.

Northrop Grumman Newport News is committed to implementing lean on the enterprise level. This thesis is focused around work toward creating a global, high-level information and material value stream map for a specified pipe assembly. It identifies the largest areas of waste in the value stream and their root causes. The recommendations assist with the reduction and elimination of the major time delays, inventory buildups, re-work, excessive processes and other waste in the system. The pipe assembly chosen as the basis for the enterprise value stream map is part of a system, newly developed for the current aircraft carrier. The pipe assembly is representative of other pipe assemblies fabricated in the shipyard, so challenges experienced with the manufacturing and flow of the selected assembly are likely to be seen in many other pipe assemblies in the facility. A large number of assemblies was examined to determine the root causes of delivery problems. The analysis was based on the criticality of the ship need date. The root causes for the late assembly delivery were found to be inadequate material inventory levels in the warehouses, lack of fabrication timeline coordination between fabrication shops, late engineering drawing revisions, underestimated fabrication durations, late supplier delivery, late material purchase order placement, and lost material. Suggestions are provided to improve operational efficiencies by targeting the elimination of these root causes that result in the delay of assembly fabrication. Some include material ordering process reorganization, shop loading variability elimination, fabrication timeline alignment, metric realignment, and rework system prioritization. Recommendations for future work focus are
(cont.) concentrated on the control of the stock material inventory levels, alignment of the incentives across the enterprise, and reorganization of the planning processes.

Abstract:
Background: Volvo Cars Body Components (VCBC) manufactures and supply body parts for Volvo Cars. It is six years since VCBC began the implementation of lean production. VCBC is using traditional accounting methods to calculate the production costs. Some employees at VCBC consider that the company has problems with high stocks of raw material, overproduction, and trouble seeing relation between costs. One value stream where improvements can be made is at “Flöde 1” at VCBC. As Maskell et al. (2011) say that the problems might be a result from the effects of the combination between lean production and traditional accounting methods. Maskell et al. (2011) argue that costs in lean should be calculated for the entire value stream. A model that makes so and who Maskell et al. (2011) believes should be used in lean is value stream costing. Purpose: This study aims to identify the costs that should be included in a value stream costing-model for VCBC. Furthermore, the study aims to calculate the total cost for “Flöde 1” by using the first research question. Last the study will investigate what the value stream costing model would mean if VCBC includes the method in their lean work. Methodology: The study was performed by using a qualitative research method. Since we used a interventionist research in which we applied action science it was obvious to use case study as a research design. For data collection, we used documents, archival records, interviews and direct observations. Conclusions: The costs that should be included in a value stream costing model for VCBC are; property cost, material cost, depreciation, capital cost, labor cost, costs for leasing and IT cost. If VCBC apply value stream costing it will result in the annual cost for “Flöde 1” to be; 3 277 524 SEK. If VCBC would implement value stream costing it will primary mean that VCBC can get better understanding for their value streams and by this create a better flow. Furthermore, VCBC does not need to track historically data but instead follow-up on a weekly basis to make changes before it is too late. Another change for VCBC if they implement value stream costing is that they have to evaluate their machines so they keep the physical capacity in mind, and that the cost per product will be decreased from 98 SEK to 70 SEK.

Today, companies have to redesign and improve their operational performance to cope with the market competition. While research related to organizational improvements has focused on applications of value stream mapping in mass production plants, it is unclear whether value steam mapping can be applied in new product introduction organizations. This thesis strives to generate and describe a customized value stream mapping tool adapted to manage twofold customer value within new product introduction environments, processes that construct products and information gathered from the production and incorporated into next generation products. The study is conducted with a case study approach including an application of the model in an industrial setting. The findings implicate that the value stream mapping tool is applicable when managing performance improvements during new product introduction. Abstract:

Abstract:
Value stream mapping (VSM) is a commonly used Lean tool which is appropriate when examining the current state of a process to identify improvement opportunities in the form of wastes. VSM can be helpful in identifying activities that do not create value for the customer which makes it possible to reduce the non-value adding activities and create a more efficient process. The use of the Six Sigma methodology DMAIC has for duringthe last decades increased substantially with the growing interest in Six Sigma. Despite the increased acceptance of the DMAIC methodology as a concept for improvement and the amount of research that has been undertaken on the implementation of VSM in various industries the literature on the integration between Lean tools such as VSM and the Six Sigma methodology DMAIC is scarce. Many authors argue that an important next step within the Lean Six Sigma research is to conduct practical studies verifying the effectiveness of the integration between DMAIC and Lean tools such as VSM. Therefore the purpose of the thesis was to study and illustrate how value stream mapping (VSM) can be executed in a structured manner according to the DMAIC methodology. A secondary purpose of the thesis was to, through the use of the "VSM-DMAIC approach", present and implement improvements in a production process. To fulfill the purpose literature was studied in order to find recommendations to how value stream mapping can be executed through the DMAIC methodology. The literature review resulted in six ways in which VSM could be integrated through DMAIC. In the case study one way to execute VSM through DMAIC methodology was studied since there was not enough time to examine all integrations. Therefore DMAIC methodology was used as the basis of the improvement project with VSM applied simultaneously in order to strengthen the DMAIC methodology. To study and illustrate the "VSM-DMAIC approach" a case study was conducted at TitanX in Linköping where the thesis work was a part of a bigger project to eliminate losses in the manual assembly. Throughout the case study the use of DMAIC methodology along with Six Sigma tools were supplemented by value stream mapping. The secondary purpose of the thesis work was to, through the use of the "VSM-DMAIC approach", present and implement improvements in a production process. The aim of the case study was to decrease blocking and starving with 10 % which is considered to be have been achieved since the proposed improvements results in reduced blocking and starving of approximately 30 % if implemented fully. The conclusions were that the VSM worked well through the DMAIC methodology. The VSM gives a wider perspective while Six Sigma tools allow a deeper understanding of the problem and its contributing factors. Although only one way in which DMAIC methodology can be implemented with VSM was studied and illustrated through the case study it was concluded that using DMAIC methodology as the basis with VSM implemented simultaneously provided a more visual picture of the problem, highlighting the importance of the problem compared to other problems in the flow.

Abstract:
Background: The continued success of Lean thinking beyond manufacturing has led to an increasing interest to utilize it in software engineering (SE). Value Stream Mapping (VSM) had a pivotal role in the operationalization of Lean thinking. However, this has not been recognized in SE adaptations of Lean. Furthermore, there are two main shortcomings in existing adaptations of VSM for an SE context. First, the assessments for the potential of the proposed improvements are based on idealistic assertions. Second, the current VSM notation and methodology are unable to capture the myriad of significant information flows, which in software development go beyond just the schedule information about the flow of a software artifact through a process. Objective: This thesis seeks to assess Software Process Simulation Modeling (SPSM) as a solution to the first shortcoming of VSM. In this regard, guidelines to perform simulation-based studies in industry are consolidated, and the usefulness of VSM supported with SPSM is evaluated. To overcome the second shortcoming of VSM, a suitable approach for capturing rich information flows in software development is identified and its usefulness to support VSM is evaluated. Overall, an attempt is made to supplement existing guidelines for conducting VSM to overcome its known shortcomings and support adoption of Lean thinking in SE. The usefulness and scalability of these proposals is evaluated in an industrial setting. Method: Three literature reviews, one systematic literature review, four industrial case studies, and a case study in an academic context were conducted as part of this research. Results: Little evidence to substantiate the claims of the usefulness of SPSM was found. Hence, prior to combining it with VSM, we consolidated the guidelines to conduct an SPSM based study and evaluated the use of SPSM in academic and industrial contexts. In education, it was found to be a useful complement to other teaching methods, and in the industry, it triggered useful discussions and was used to challenge practitioners’ perceptions about the impact of existing challenges and proposed improvements. The combination of VSM with FLOW (a method and notation to capture information flows, since existing VSM adaptions for SE are insufficient for this purpose) was successful in identifying challenges and improvements related to information needs in the process. Both proposals to support VSM with simulation and FLOW led to identification of waste and improvements (which would not have been possible with conventional VSM), generated more insightful discussions and resulted in more realistic improvements. Conclusion: This thesis characterizes the context and shows how SPSM was beneficial both in the industrial and academic context. FLOW was found to be a scalable, lightweight supplement to strengthen the information flow analysis in VSM. Through successful industrial application and uptake, this thesis provides evidence of the usefulness of the proposed improvements to the VSM activities.

Abstract:
The rapid rise in global population and market demands have mandated industries to introduce better and quality products to meet up their rushing needs. However, achiev-ing such goals need optimal production system and robust strategies. Exploring in depth it can be visualized that most of the manufacturing set ups suffers losses or relatively lower benefits due to improper and high wastages. Hence it is very important for man-ufacturing industries to explore the techniques which help them to improve their pro-duction system. The key techniques from Lean Manufacturing (LM) such as Value Stream Mapping (VSM) and Ishikawa diagram were explored in this work for enhanc-ing production capacity, reducing rework, reducing wastages and arriving to a well-defined optimal process flow which in turn help in achieving higher productivity. How-ever, the implementation of Lean and Value stream mapping depends on the production scale and has its own significance to different manufacturing setup. With that motive, in this thesis work the emphasis was made on exploring VSM technique for better pro-duction optimization in manufacturing sector.

Abstract:

Introduction. Improvement of the product flow by means of applying the lean principles, including the value stream mapping tool has become an important component in the at-tempt of many companies to make transition from traditional production to the lean manu-facturing system. It often implies modernization of organizational structure, relationships with sub-contractors, suppliers and transportation companies. The topic of this master the-sis originates from company HAGS Aneby AB that produces playing systems comprising different components. This report is an attempt to understand and analyze the problems in the product flow on the example of playing system Agito that includes Origo product fam-ily components as the main constructive part.

Purpose. The purpose of this case study has been to identify, analyze and propose solu-tions for waste-related problems in the Origo product flow, by applying the lean thinking principles and the data collection methods.

Method. The proposed case study methodology combines both theoretical and empirical approach. Data collected in interviews with sub-contractors and suppliers, and observa-tions at the mechanical workshop and warehouse, have constituted the input for the value stream mapping method. The value stream mapping method has been applied to construct the current state map of the Origo value stream and identify the wastes. Furthermore, other methods including the decision point analysis, the postponement theory, and the supplier/buyer dependence grid have been subsequently applied to analyze the company relationships with key business partners and assist in designing a draft of the future state map.

Conclusion. It has been concluded from the constructed current state map of Origo value stream that the most critical wastes are waiting, transportation, unnecessary inventory, un-necessary motion and defects. Furthermore, the requirement of minimum quantity of raw material to be purchased from the supplier and the improper workshop layout has been recognized as the main reasons for the wastes. The measures to reduce the identified wastes have been pointed out. It has been proposed to better integrate the key actors into the HAGS supply chain. Adopting the cellular layout in the mechanical workshop has been found beneficial as well as orientation of production on customer orders rather than on forecasting. The mentioned measures to reduce wastes have been summarized in the draft of the future state map. The main advantages of the proposed future state are faster order fulfillment process, gained visibility and control of raw material and reduced costs in the flow of Origo components.

Abstract:
Nowadays, the global economy imposes great competition between companies that creates an intense pressure. Due to this increasing competition, companies have to keep improving their process for becoming more efficient to lower costs while improving their quality level and providing a better service. A company that does not improve every year is a company that is dying. Although Kraft Foods Inc. is the world’s second largest food company, they also need to keep improving in order to maintain its competitive position on the market and this is why they have been implementing the Lean culture in France since 2007. They want to become more efficient by eliminating all the activities that the customer is not willing to pay for, defined as waste. Providing more value with fewer resources, goal of Lean manufacturing, should make Kraft Foods France even more competitive. However, in order to become Leaner, the nine plants of Kraft Foods Biscuit needed a structured method because the first difficulty of eliminating wastes lies in identifying them. The main purpose of this thesis was to develop one of the most important Lean tools to identify wastes called “Value Stream Mapping”. This master thesis will therefore explain and describe how mapping the value stream can help identifying and eliminating the wastes but also can be a priceless support to share a common vision of the value stream among managers. This tool should be seen as the starting point of any improvements projects since it allows identifying opportunities for improvement that will improve the bottom line of the company. VSM should be used to challenge the status quo and the behaviors of all employees in order to improve Quality, Cost, Delivery, Safety, Sustainability and Morale. This master thesis will deal with the two main missions I led in order to reach this goal. The first mission was to develop a standard of the Value Stream Mapping for Kraft Foods France. I was asked to participate in the structuralizing and in the standardization of the VSM tool for the company. The tool was first analyzed and then a taylor-made VSM tool was developed to meet the characteristics and needs of the food industry. The last step of this mission was to train managers and engineers so that they can lead VSM projects themselves, in any plants, that can help them identifying improvements to be done. The second mission was to apply this method in different production lines to show managers the effectiveness of the tool for identifying rooms for improvement that could increase the productivity of theses studied production lines. For example, the project at Granville’s plant, described in the last part of the thesis, shows what types of improvements can be identified thanks to a Value Stream Mapping project since this project led to a productivity improvement of 40 k€. On completion of this thesis, I wish to have contributed to the emergence of the good use of Value Stream Mapping tool at Kraft Foods that will help the company to keep improving and focusing on customers.

Abstract:

Abstract:

This thesis describes the formulation of short-term and mid-term operational excellence strategies through the use of value stream mapping. It is shown that many interconnected issues form a backdrop for seemingly independent "symptomatic issues" or issues that can be seen readily on the surface because of their significant financial or organizational impacts. These underlying issues indicate organizational improvement projects are necessary in the short term to create an environment conducive to sustaining results stemming from projects addressing the surface issues. One example of a surface issue is that of scheduling where the problem can be readily seen with blockages, starvation, and long cycle times, but must be solved with organizational and other fundamental improvements for improvements to be sustainable. Also presented is a case study showing a root cause and financial analysis relating to the capabilities of the aseptic filling process. The value stream mapping analysis led to recommendations of working on fundamental organizational, communication, and cultural issues to create a strong foundation for improvement projects on more visible projects.

Numa fase inicial a ferramenta identificará o estado actual e a quantificação do valor dessa família de produtos no processo produtivo. ABSTRACT: The value stream mapping has been used as a very effective tool in helping the identification and reduction of waste. It is a tool belonging to a management philosophy that seeks the elimination of waste - Lean Management - and it is often used as a starting point for the implementation of this philosophy. This project aims to implement the value stream mapping (VSM) tool to examine the value chain of a family of products from a company's production process - Toyota Caetano Portugal, SA.. The application of VSM will be developed from particular to the general, first the tool is applied to the sub-processes and then the global process. Initially, this tool will identify the current state and quantification of the value of the products family in the production process. Subsequently, its analysis leads to the identification of waste and opportunities for improvement for the future development of the state of the production process.

Abstract:
The rise of the sharing economy is forcing industries to move from traditional take-make-waste economy towards circular ones (Schuttelaar & Partners, 2019). Along with the increasing influence of e-commerce, supply-chain collaboration and globalization has increased the pressure of warehouse operations and requires more efficient operations with the use of less resources thanever before (Frazelle, 2016). Lean is a concept that has gained attention as a means of doing morewith less, through reducing wastes and continuously improving, which has been successful within the manufacturing sector. The difficulties of translating this concept into non-repetitive environments has contributed to the low level of adoption within industries like construction. Where companies within construction equipment rental have an even greater challenge, dealing with circular product flows. Thus, making their warehousing operations inherently complex along with the large amounts of different products. The thesis has focused on analysing the warehouse operations flow of collective fall protectionproducts in the equipment rental industry, from customer order to customer return. This has been enabled by performing an adapted Value Stream Mapping method in a new setting for equipmentrental industries. Where Value Stream Mapping traditionally is applied in manufacturing to visually represents the actions that are required for a product to move through the production andinformation flows. The purpose of the study is to apply VSM beyond manufacturing and tosummarize the results in order to provide suggestions for improving the handling of non-serialized products within the equipment rental industry. A case company within the equipment rental industry has been used to meet the purpose of the study by testing and evaluating the proposed frame work. The findings have been followed up by performing a return handling study, conducted by equipment rental professionals, which has been subject to a statistical analysis. The findings from the VSM are used as a foundation for the return handling study, which serves as a means of verifying or dismissing them. These are then summarized in suggestions for improvements to the case company and suggestions for future actions. Among the findings are indications of longer return times for products that are not forewarned prior to returns, and increase processing rates for sorted returns. Furthermore three product types were more frequently requiring repairs, cleaning and scrapping compared to other products, suggesting that these requiremore time to process. The company is advised to work with standardizing processes for return handling throughout the organization within invoicing specifications and product storage. Suggestions for future research within the subject area is also presented.
