Abstract:
The thesis was performed at Preform AB in Laxå. Their speciality is subcontract manufacturing of high quality products made from sheet metal, from raw materials to finished product. The work with implementation of Lean production at the company is at an early stage and our task was to perform a value stream mapping (VSM), which is a tool to organize the flow of a manufacturing operation. The product group that were analyzed was hydraulic tanks, which are manufactured in a great variety. The work was mostly performed at the company and was primary to understand and analyze the present at the company. Later on improvement posibilities will be discovered with lead time in focus. That will result in a more competetive companay at a market under great pressure. The result of the thesis will confirm whether or not the work in progress is in the right direction and where future improvements should be done. The thesis is also a basic to motivate and will work as decision support for the leaders at the company. After a complete analyzis was made for the present stage it was shown that the total lead time was 27,5 days where only 54 minutes were value adding time. Of those 27,5 days, 21 were spent in inventory. Most of the improvement posibilities can be attributed to poor planning at different stages. By visible made facts from the value stream mapping, a proposal of a future flow with the needed operations were presented as a manufacturing cell only for tanks that are released from the other production. The manufacturing tempo is set by the customer need, which will ensure that the products is manufactured after what customers want and when prompted. The result became a reduction of lead time to 9 days, a total reduction of 18,5 days in lead time. The reduction leads to savings of 216000 swedish crowns per year.

Abstract:
The thesis work has been carried out at Volvo Aero Corporation (VAC) in Trollhättan. VAC has entered a partnership as developing and producing partner with engine manufacturer Pratt & Whitney and is currently at the starting phase of producing the turbine rear frame (TEC) to the engine PW1000.The purpose of this study was to create a report on process level that describes the conditions and the potential with PW1000 TEC to reach the product cost calculation taking into account lead times and describe alternative method solutions. The report describes a comparison between the present flow (2012), a flow based on product cost calculation (2016) and a potential flow (2016). The work has mainly been based on acquiring the knowledge and information available to inspect the present flow; this has been done by workshop observations, meetings and gathering of the information that is available on the work site for the PW1000 TEC.The information obtained has been merged into an Excel document, called Roadmap. It serves as a roadmap with current situation as the start and the potential flow for 2016 as the goal. With the roadmap as a tool, assumptions have been taken considering the flow and how it will change, where processes have been eliminated, reduced or marked as a problem.

Abstract:

This report is the result of a 20-points project at the University of Jönköping. The project was carried out in form of a case study with the object of analysing the value flow at DIAB AB’s confection department in Laholm. The aim of this project is to submit proposals to the production management on how to increase the efficiency of the production flow at the confection department and reduce the capital accumulation in form of products in work.

The information in this report is gathered from interviews, observations and measurements. Furthermore, a literature study was carried out in view to find suitable theories when analysing present as well as future suggested production conditions.

This report is based on four main questions:

• What does the existing process of the value flow for the most produced product family look like?

• How does the process of the value flow for GS perform considering the through-put-time?

o How long through-put-time does a representative product of the GS-family have?

o How long is the value- and no value adding time for that product along its production flow?

• Which production related disturbances and cost prompters exist in the present value flow process?

• How could the process of the value flow for GS be made more efficient, less persistent to disturbances and more competitive?

The existing process of the value flow for the most producing product family has been mapped and is illustrated in appendix 3. For now, the process includes nine working stations along the production chain.

The through-put-time of a representative GS-product is according to my survey 18,5 days. The value adding time is only 16,1 minutes, that is 0,061 % of the entire through-put-time. The remaining time, in other words the no value adding time, is 440 hours and it represents mainly storage and transport of products.

The representative production disturbances and cost prompters that characterise the process of the value flow contain material related disturbances, a high number of long shifts, long storage time prior to the customer order point and with that, high capital accumulation and finally unnecessary transports.

Improvement proposals aim to increase the efficacy of the process of the value flow and reduce the capital amounts by shifting from the present production strategy involving manufacturing towards order (TMO) to assembling towards order (MMO).

In order to make this possible a semi-manufactured storage will be introduced after the standard confection which will represent the new decoupling point. The production at the standard confection will then occur according to the semi-manufactured storage. The standard confection should produce in larger aggregated order quantities based on prognosis in order to benefit from the advantages of economy of scale and the production must proceed in a continuous flow according to the FIFU-system (First In First Out). In addition to that, the special confection must produce according to a pull-system and only when the customer makes a request.

The tact-time of the GS products should constitute a limit for all the cycle times along the production chain, both on the standard- and special confection. This is partly due to creating a constant and balanced production flow which enables short through-put-time and partly due to avoiding in-between-storage as a result of various bottlenecks.

Abstract:
The usage of value stream mapping has to a high degree been limited to entrepreneurs in the construction phase, but it might still be possible for the client to use the tool in the planning phase. If so, this opens up for a new efficiency tool to be used by clients, which could enable economical advantages. This study is thus directed towards the investigation of value stream mapping applications by the client, through a case study at the Swedish Transport Administration. The purpose of the study is to limit waste and increase efficiency in the process activity for quality control of time, costs, and content, from descriptions of new investments until they are approved. The study also intends to investigate the possibilities of applying the Lean tool value stream mapping within the planning phase in the role as client. The study is conducted based on a qualitative strategy. Which follows that gathered data is analyzed thoroughly through the stream mapping analysis. The research approach which is applied is based upon a deductive method, which follows out of that theory concerning value stream mapping and Lean makes up the base of the study. Empirical data for the study was gathered by interviews and documents. Interviews were conducted with both a representative from the section for planning and one from the investments section from all ten of the chosen projects. This was done to get two perspectives on how the process had been conducted. Value stream mapping were conducted by the means of five stages. The first stage concerned the definition of the process. While the second stage was based around the conductions of a current situation mapping, to conduct this, a statistical analysis was required to get the necessary values. The third stage is made up by a future situation mapping, whereby previous mapping was analyzed through a qualitative strategy, whereby waste and Lean from theory were applied. At this stage, some suggestions for improvements that could be directly implemented were produced. The fourth stage was based upon an ideal situation mapping, which was based upon the expectations that the Swedish Transport Administration have for the process for quality control of time, costs, and content. In this stage improvements that are too complicated for immediate implementation were produced. The fifth stage were based upon creating an action plan for implementation of the suggestions for improvement. The produced suggestions in the study are the following. · Strengthened communication. · A priority list. · Increased transparency. · Increased knowledge within the process for quality control of time, costs, and content. · Increased flexibility. The study also clearly indicates that value stream mapping can be applied by clients within the planning phase in repetitive processes with product families.

Abstract:
I dagens samhälle överutnyttjas jordens resurser.
In today's society, the earth's resources are overused. Today's way of living and the climate changes that are taking place therefore lead to higher requirements on companies to work with issues regarding sustainability and strive for resource-efficient working methods. For companies to become more resource efficient, tools may be needed to help and identify areas with potential for improvement. In this study, the Lean tool value stream mapping and its applicability to the process industry were analyzed. Value stream mapping is a mapping tool used to identify losses and flow-limiting factors related to a manufacturing process. The mapping analyzes both information and material flow. With this study, the authors want to investigate how value flow analysis can be applied or adapted to a continuous manufacturing environment. The study was conducted as a case study at Stora Enso Skoghall, where data collection was done through a mapping of the process, a questionnaire and semi-structured interviews. The study shows that the tool can be applied to the process industry as it provides a good overview of the processes and indicates areas that can be seen as flow-limiting. As a tool for loss identification, it is required that the mapping is supplemented with additional analysis methods in order to get a clearer picture of the losses that occur in the paper and pulp industry. The value stream mapping can, among other things, be developed regarding a clearer mapping of the information flow. The authors of the study also believe that the mapping of the material flow can be developed with more information about how deviations occur along the production. The material flow can also be illustrated with the help of a simulating tool to give a more correct picture of the deviations that occur.
