Abstract:

Bulatovic, Aleksandar. "Particular ceramic forms in the central Balkan and northern shores of the Aegean sea in the late bronze age." Starinar, no. 61 (2011): 121–40. http://dx.doi.org/10.2298/sta1161121b.

Abstract:
This paper deals with the appearance and development of particular ceramic forms that were prevalent on the wider territory from the lower Danube to the northern shores of the Aegean sea during the middle and Late Bronze Age. These forms relate to globular beakers, pear shaped vessels with everted rims with arch shaped handles, cups with handles with plastic applications on their upper surface, etc. Particular attention is devoted to the phenomenon of globular beakers of the LBA in the valleys of Varder, Mesta and Struma rivers. All information collected primarily through analysis of stylistic-typological characteristics of ceramics of the middle and Late Bronze Age - that took into account ritual burials, layout of settlements, trade routes and climactic conditions during that period - points to population movements from the north to the south already by the LBA, i.e. in 15th century BC. These movements contributed to the creation of particular cultural groups in the LBA in the central Balkans, such as the Brnjica cultural group. However, these movements cannot be clearly linked to the so-called Aegean Migration, and for this reason their character and chronology are subject to debate. Ultimately it can be concluded that beakers of the Zimnicea -Cherkovna-Plovdiv type appeared in the late Bronze Age in the Vlasine depression and the Danube valley through the evolution of beaker forms of cultural groups of earlier periods. Almost contemporaneously, during LBA, a variant of this ceramic form, richly ornamented (mostly with spirals) and similar in manner to the cultural group Dubovac-Zuto Brdo-Grla Mare- Krna, appeared in the LBA culture in northern Greece. Clearly this stylistic mannerism, with spirals as characteristic elements, spread relatively quickly through successive migrations in the period of 15th-14th century BC, toward the south of the Balkan Peninsula, thus covering the wider territory from the southern tip of the Carpathian mountains down to the northern shores of the Aegean Sea. Participants in those migrations are in fact representatives of cultural groups that were created in the northern Balkan Peninsula during the 16th and 15th centuries BC through the breakdown of Vatic culture. As the result of pressures from the north and north-west they headed south, contributing to the creation and development of cultural groups on the territory of the central Balkans. The final destination of the migrations were the valleys of the Mesta, Struma and Vardar rivers where, starting in the 15th century BC, a noticeable foreign cultural influence can be felt that became most pronounced during 14th century BC.

Canadian Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences 72, no. 7 (July 2015): 1048–57. http://dx.doi.org/10.1139/cjfas-2015-0003.

Abstract:
Contact zones between divergent lineages of aquatic taxa have been described from the northeastern Pacific Ocean. We surveyed samples of Dolly Varden (Salvelinus malma) from their North American range for variation at 14 microsatellite DNA loci. After accounting for hybridization between Dolly Varden and co-occurring bull trout (Salvelinus confluentus) and Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus), we found evidence for two genetic lineages of Dolly Varden consistent with the previously recognized subspecies, northern Dolly Varden (S. m. malma) and southern Dolly Varden (S. m. lordii). We documented a contact zone between the two subspecies from the eastern Alaska Peninsula to Cook Inlet, Alaska, where admixture values (i.e., the proportion of the genome estimated to be composed of northern Dolly Varden, QNDV) ranged between QNDV = 0.245 and 0.754 across about 700 ocean kilometres. Populations of Dolly Varden showing low admixture (i.e., less than 5%) were located a minimum of 346 km to the west to 1200 km to the southeast, respectively, from the contact zone. The two lineages of Dolly Varden probably stem from isolation and subsequent divergence in, and dispersal from, distinct northern and southern Pleistocene glacial refugia and substantiate the treatment of S. malma as two subspecies and as at least two designatable units under Canada’s Species at Risk Act.

Abstract:
The study reports and synthesizes the available geological and geochemical data on the East Vardar ophiolites comprising most known occurrences from the South Apuseni Mountains in Romania to the tip of the Chalkidiki Pen-insula in Greece. The summarized geological data suggest that the East Vardar ophiolites are mostly composed of the magmatic sequences, whereas the mantle rocks are very subordinate. The members of the magmatic sequences are characterized by the presence of abundant acid and intermediate volcanic and intrusive rocks. The age of these ophio-lites is paleontologically and radiometrically constrained and these data suggest that the East Vardar ophiolite formed as a short-lived oceanic realm that was emplaced before the uppermost Kimmeridgian. A relatively weak adakitic affinity is shown by intra-ophiolitic acid and intermediate rocks in many East Vardar provinces. It can be taken as evidence that the subduction of the young and hot slab, most likely along the earlier spreading ridge has occurred. A paleo-tectonic reconstruction consisting of four stages is proposed. It involves: a) an early/mid-Jurassic north-northeastward subduction of the West Vardar oceanic plate; b) the formation of a mid-Jurassic volcanic arc and a narrow back-arc oceanic stripe of East Vardar behind it; c) the mid-/Upper Jurassic initiation of East Vardar subduc-tion along the ridge axis, and d) complex and heterogeneous emplacement of the East Vardar ophiolites. So far avail-able data allow for having relatively clear ideas about the origin and evolution of the East Vardar ophiolites. Howev-er, in order to provide better understanding of all aspects of its evolution we need to answer additional questions re-lated to the true structural position of the East Vardar ophiolites slices in Serbia, the exact nature of subduction that caused back-arc spreading (intraoceanic vs subduction under continent?) and the full significance of the adakitic sig-nature shown by rocks in the East Vardar provinces other than Demir Kapija.

Abstract:
The balancing exercise of the ?single-ocean model? and reexa - mination of Jurassic paleogeographic conditions and tectonic interaction allowed the reconstruction of the mosaic of independent microplate margins and sutured northwestern Tethyan realm (Vardar Ocean). The overprinted Mesozoic convergent margin referred to as the ?Zvornik suture? was of special interest in the reconstruction of the displaced ophiolite belts of Dinarides and Vardar Zone. The surface?subsurface constraints of these mixed crustal units, in particular the polyphase strike-slip character of the ?Zvornik suture? yields the presence of at least two of Neotethyan basins extrapolated in the vicinity of the northwestern segment of this paleosuture - related fault system. The restoration and synopsis shows a limited capability for obduction-related emplacement of the Vardar oceanic lithosphere (West Vardar Zone) accounting the polyphased strike-slip tectonics. The balancing and the proposed tectonic/paleogeographic recon struction does not exclude obduction, but it shows a limited capability with much shorter across-strike width of the highlydeformed West Vardar ophio lite. The presence of the two distinct autochthonous Tethyan oceans divided by this important dextral strike-slip fault zone is suggested: The Inner Dina ric?(Mirdita?Pindos) Ocean or Dinaric Tethys (identified by the Inner Dinaric Ophiolite Belt) and the Vardar Ocean (identified by the West Vardar Zone). The West Vardar Zone remains to be a subzone of the principal composite Neotethyan suture referred to as the Vardar Zone s.s., whereas the Dinaric Tethys have been (re)incorporated to the area of Dinarides (Adria microplate). The northern segments of these two landlocked basins were on both sides of the Inner Dinaridic continental ridge (referred to as the Drina-Ivanjica block), divided by the protracted strike-slip activity of the ?Zvornik suture?.

Abstract:

Abstract:
In sympatric lacustrine cutthroat trout (Salmo clarki clarki) and Dolly Varden (Salvelinus malma), reaction distance to artificial and natural prey increased with increases in irradiance from a visual irradiance threshold (VIT, the maximum quantity of irradiance resulting in zero reaction distance to prey) to a saturation irradiance threshold (SIT, the minimum quantity of irradiance that maximizes reaction distance to prey). The VIT and SIT for Dolly Varden were approximately one and two orders of magnitude lower, respectively, than those for trout. At all irradiance levels >4.2 × 1017 photons m−2∙s−1 the reaction distance of trout exceeded that of Dolly Varden. Reaction distance to prey in both species was greatest for red irradiance followed in descending order by green, yellow and blue irradiance. The midsummer ambient irradiance regime in a lake cohabited by trout (concentrated in surface waters) and Dolly Varden (inhabiting deeper waters) showed that during daylight hours a much larger portion of the water column had irradiance levels [Formula: see text] the SIT of Dolly Varden than the SIT of trout and that irradiance levels were always [Formula: see text] the VST of Dolly Varden although only in the upper 5 m at night. Estimates of reaction distance to Diaptomus kenai and foraging velocity at several irradiance levels showed that trout have the potential to visually search a volume of water seven times greater than that searched by Dolly Varden for Diaptomus kenai on a summer day.

Straipsnyje nagrinėjama fenomenologinė vaizduotės samprata noetiniu požiūriu ir išskleidžiamos trys sąvokos, kurias pasitelkdamas Edmundas Husserlis apibūdina vaizduotės funkcinę prasmę: prezentifikacija, neutralizacija ir modifikacija. Nors visuose šiuose terminuose įsivaizdavimo aktai griežtąja prasme stokoja „tikroviškumo“ ar „kūniškumo“, pasirodydami „stokos“ arba „tarsi“ režimu, tyrimo metu paaiškėja, kad pastarasis vaizduotės statusas brėžiamas iš intelektinės pozicijos. Atmetus suvokimo modifikacijos ar modifikuojančio tikėjimo faktorių, priimamas racionalizuotas „tikrovės suvokimo“ modelis. Tačiau būtent šie vaizduotės veikimo registrai atskleidžia papildomus aktualybės suvokimo klodus, kurių dėka kinta išgyvenamos situacijos intensyvumo laipsnis.Pagrindiniai žodžiai: vaizduotė, suvokimas, prezentifikacija, neutralizacija, modifikacija.THREE NAMES OF IMAGINATIONKristupas Sabolius SummaryThe author works through phenomenological concept of imagination and its noetic function by analyzing three main ‘names’ found in Husserl’s description of die Phantasie: presentification, neutralization and modification. Although all these terms mean that objects are not given ‘in person’ or ‘bodily’ (leibhaftig) and refer to the ‘lack reality’, the closer examination of their status reveals that the latter characteristic of imagination is drawn from the intellectual perspective and, consequently, undergoes the rationalization of ‘reality perception’. But it is namely the active modification, registered in the field of perception as well, discloses the hidden layers of experience due to which the mode of actual situation could assume different levels of intensity. Keywords: imagination, perception, presentification, neutralization, modification.

Abstract:
Dolly Varden (Salvelinus malma) (N = 881) and cutthroat trout (Salmo clarki) (N = 1571) were captured from a native lacustrine sympatric stock and transferred to two nearby lakes, formerly fishless, to establish allopatric populations with genetic backgrounds similar to the donor stock. Nearshore (5- and 10-m depth contours) vertical distributions of segregated Dolly Varden and cutthroat trout, between spring and autumn of the first 18 mo after transfer, did not differ significantly from those in their sympatric lake. Dolly Varden were captured mainly near the bottom while cutthroat trout were more evenly distributed throughout the water column. Nevertheless, initially the allopatric Dolly Varden rapidly became highly planktivorous, virtually eliminating midwater populations of Chaoborus trivittatus and C. americanus (third and fourth instar larvae) within a year. They later ate mainly benthic organisms as in the sympatric lake. Although allopatric cutthroat trout had a similar effect on Chaoborus larvae in their lake, they also ate more large benthic prey than did those in sympatry with Dolly Varden in the donor lake. These results suggest that while there may be genetic control restricting broad vertical use of space by formerly sympatric Dolly Varden shortly after being placed in allopatry, such control is flexible enough that a highly benthofagous stock in sympatry quickly becomes planktivorous in the absence of cutthroat trout.

Abstract:
Northern form Dolly Varden is an anadromous char with significant ecological value found in high-gradient rivers of the Western Arctic. Because of declines in population abundance, Dolly Varden was recently designated as “Special Concern” under the federal Species at Risk Act. This species is also of great cultural and dietary significance to Indigenous Peoples of many communities in the Western Arctic; thus, expanding knowledge of the distribution, biology, and essential habitat is an important priority. We present results of a fisheries survey in the headwaters of the Arctic Red River, Northwest Territories, that focused on confirming the presence of Dolly Varden. Of 143 fish captured among 12 sampling locations, two were Arctic grayling (Thymallus arcticus), 33 were slimy sculpin (Cottus cognatus), and 108 were char identified using qualitative and quantitative morphological features. A subsample of 44 char voucher specimens were frozen whole and later identified using a linear discriminant function (LDF) based on meristic counts and morphological measurements, and a mitochondrial DNA genetic marker. LDF scores indicated that char collected in the Arctic Red River were northern form Dolly Varden. Genetic analysis showed that all but one char possessed mitochondrial DNA sequences common in northern form Dolly Varden from Canada. Our results confirm the presence of Dolly Varden in the Arctic Red River headwaters, extending the confirmed known distribution of this taxon in the Northwest Territories approximately 450 km south and 100 km east of previously delimited areas.

Abstract:
Abstract Similar species that overlap in sympatry may diverge in characters related to resource use as a result of evolution or phenotypic plasticity. Dolly Varden charr (Salvelinus malma) and whitespotted charr (S. leucomaenis) overlap along streams in Hokkaido, Japan, and compete by interference for invertebrate drift-foraging positions. Previous research has shown that as drift declines during summer, Dolly Varden shift foraging modes to capture benthic prey, a behaviour facilitated by their subterminal jaw morphology. We compare body and jaw morphology of Dolly Varden in sympatry vs. allopatry in two locations to test for character displacement. Statistical analysis showed significant divergence in characters related to foraging, which was correlated with variation in individual charr diets. Dolly Varden in sympatry had shorter heads and lower jaws than in allopatry, and even within sites charr with these characteristics fed less on drifting terrestrial invertebrates but more on benthic aquatic invertebrates. Those in allopatry had longer heads and lower jaws, and fed more on terrestrial invertebrates. The close proximity of sites in one stream suggests that Dolly Varden may display phenotypic plasticity similar to other charr, allowing rapid responses in morphology to the presence of competitors. These morphological shifts probably help them maintain positive fitness when competing with whitespotted charr in Hokkaido streams.

Abstract:
The trophic ecology (diet and head morphology) and migration patterns of two closely related salmonid fishes, Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus (L., 1758)) and Dolly Varden (Salvelinus malma (Walbaum, 1792)), were examined in tributaries of Lake Aleknagik, southwestern Alaska, to test for differentiation between species. Schoener’s index of proportional overlap and multivariate analyses of diets suggested that these species had significantly different trophic niches. Arctic char and the largest individuals of both species had the most diverse diets, and sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka (Walbaum, 1792)) eggs dominated the diet of both species, especially Arctic char. Arctic char had larger jaws and wider heads than Dolly Varden of similar body length, which may contribute to interspecific diet difference. The species also differed in migration patterns; otolith microchemistry indicated that juvenile Arctic char were produced by nonanadromous mothers, whereas the mothers of the Dolly Varden had been to sea in the season prior to spawning. The species also segregate in spawning habitat (Arctic char in the lakes and Dolly Varden in streams), as well as in juvenile rearing habitat. Our study provides the first evidence of divergent feeding and migratory ecology between sympatric juvenile Arctic char and Dolly Varden, differences that may constrain hybridization and introgression between them.

Abstract:
Observations made on spawning anadromous Dolly Varden (Salvelinus malma) demonstrated that anadromous females were aggressive toward stream-resident mature males but were never aggressive toward subordinate anadromous males. Landlocked females only attacked subordinate males smaller than the α male. The number of times that females spawned in a nest depended on the mating attempts of stream-resident and subordinate males. Such attempts discouraged females from ovipositing. Through this behaviour, female anadromous Dolly Varden possibly increase anadromy and fitness in offspring by choosing anadromous males; female landlocked Dolly Varden possibly increase the size and fitness of offspring by choosing relatively large males.

AbstractIn this essay I reply to Alyssa Bernstein and Helga Varden's comments on my book, Kant and Cosmopolitanism. In response to Bernstein, I argue that Kant's opposition to the coercive incorporation of states into an international federation should be interpreted as permitting no exceptions. In response to Varden, I clarify Kant's conception and defence of patriotism as a duty, and I show how Kantian cosmopolitans can rebut Bernard Williams's ‘one-thought-too-many’ objection. I also explicate why, given a specific feature of Kant's defence of the state's duty to provide poverty relief, an international federation can be seen to have an analogous duty.

Abstract:
Abstract This article addresses the origins and nature of the fad through a case study of the ‘Dolly Varden’ dress. The gown originated in the 1770s as a ‘polonaise’ among continental aristocracy, and experienced a minor revival in the 1840s when Dolly Varden, a character in Charles Dickens’s novel Barnaby Rudge (1841) was depicted wearing it. But it did not become a fad until the 1870s, after a Dickens-owned painting of the character was sold and the gown re-entered the public eye. Having shed its historical or literary connections, the gown was revived again in Gilbert and Sullivan’s comic opera Patience (1881), a well-known send-up of Aesthetic foibles. Often overlooked is the fact that dairy maid Patience – who figures in the opera as a counterpoint to the lovesick maidens wearing high Aesthetic garb – wears a Dolly Varden gown, as faddish as any Aesthetic gown, only slightly outdated. The Aesthetic afterlife of the dress demonstrates the mutability of Victorian fads and the gleeful ignorance of antecedents that typifies fad culture. Facilitated by the material and commercial innovations of the period and fuelled by an insistent presentism, fads are – this article argues – a truly Victorian phenomenon.

Abstract:
AbstractPopulations of northern Dolly Varden (Salvelinus malma malma) exhibit partial seaward migration, yet little is known about this phenomenon in Dolly Varden populations. Our study analyzed data from three different Dolly Varden populations in the western Canadian Arctic in order to determine if: (1) differences in size-at-first seaward migration exist between fish that migrate at early and late ages among populations inhabiting different river systems, and (2) annual growth influences anadromous or resident life history choice. Otolith strontium analysis and back-calculation were used to determine age- and size-at-first seaward migration, respectively. Differences in age- and size-at-first seaward migration were determined across river system and migration age. Back-calculated fish lengths were compared using a mixed effect model to determine how early growth influences migratory tactics (early or late aged smolt, or resident). Our results indicate that fish exhibiting faster early growth migrated in earlier years and at smaller sizes than slower growing fish, however size- and age-at first seaward migration varied by river system. Faster growing Dolly Varden tended to become either residents or early smolts, while slower growth was associated with smolting later in life. This is contrary to life history theory where the fastest growing fish in a population should mature as a resident. Our results indicate factors other than growth may be influencing life history ‘decisions’ in Dolly Varden. Future work on growth efficiencies and metabolic rates is needed to assess how they affect migratory behaviours.
