Full textBackground: Swedish basal hygiene routines are an important and essential part of the healthcare. Correct execution of the routines creates a decline in proliferation of contagions which will shrink the number of HAI which today is the foremost reason of damage in the healthcare. HAI leads to an increase of suffering for the patient, extended nursing time and costs. The nurses primary task is to prevent disease through the usage of hand hygiene. Aim: Factors causing lack of hand hygiene among nurses. Method: A descriptive literature review with results from 12 scientific articles. Articles were analysed with a five-stage model. Results: This bachelor thesis result displays different factors which contributes to deficient use of hand hygiene. The nurse can affect the personal factors, like their attitude, knowledge and their ideal to be a role model. However organizational factors like hindrance in the healthcare environment, lack of continuous education and time constraints are harder for the nurse to affect. Conclusion: Different factors are causing lack of hand hygiene among nurses. Today HAI occurs at a large scale and its demands certain understanding from the nurse regarding these factors in order to improve preventive work against HAI.

Full textBackground: Healthcare associated infections (HAI) cause suffering and an increased mortality risk. Hand hygiene (HH) is considered an important measure to prevent the occurrence of HAI. The reason for this is that the hands act as a vector in the transmission of contagious pathogenes between individuals, places and objects. The hands of both healthcare workers (HCW) and patients are therefore crucial. Aim: The aim of this literature review is to describe the HH compliance amongst HCW and patients and its effect on the occurrence of HAI. Method: A systematic approach was used to conduct this study, because it seemed most suitable to answer the purpose. Included articles were published between years 2002-2013 from countries with a hygienic standard that can be comparable to the one of Sweden. The article search was performed using CINAHL, Cochrane Library, Google Scholar, Internurse, Medline and PubMed. In addition, a manual search was also used. After the articles were reviewed, quality assessed and analyzed, four categories emerged and lay the base to the results. Result: The HH compliance of the HCW was low and their HH compliance was poorer before patient contact compared with after patient contact. Their HH compliance was good when caring for patients under contact precautions. Errors of the HCWs’ HH technique were observed, especially an improper use of gloves was discovered. It was also revealed that patients’ hand contamination rate was high and that their compliance towards HH practices was low. Patients’ attitudes towards HH were positive and they considered a good HH vital to reduce the occurrence of HAI.

Full textIntroduction: Healthcare-associated infections has become one of the more frequent injuries related to healthcare in Sweden and in departments with a great flow of patients, as in a radiology department, there is an increased risk for spread of contagion. The different medical conditions of patients and the variation of environments they come from contribute to a varying bacterial flora in a radiology department. Aim: The aim of this integrative literature review was to describe how radiology nurses, along with other healthcare professionals, can work to reduce the spread of healthcare-associated infections by means of basic hygiene routines. Method: Based on three formulated questions regarding healthcare-associated infections scientific articles were scoured in the databases PubMed and Cinahl. 17 articles were reviewed with inspiration from Willman, Stoltz och Bahtsevani (2006) and were analyzed with Whittemore and Knafl’s (2005) five steps. Result: From the articles two categories and six subcategories were formed. The categories contained risks of contamination and methods and aids to prevent contagion with subcategories such as the patient, the surroundings and equipment. Conclusion: Radiography nurses and the equipment used in daily care is a risk of contagion. The adherence to basic hygiene routines needs to be raised and for this to be achieved improvement interventions can be used.

Full textBackground: Healthcare associated infections creates great strains in healthcare at asocietal-, organizational- and individual level. Healthcare workers implementation andadherence to existing evidence-based guidelines is the most effective way to preventnosocomial infections. For nurses to conduct preventive work and enabling a safe carefor patients, it is important to examine the cause of deficiencies in adherence to theseguidelines.Aim: The aim of this survey was to describe factors that can explain why nurses do notfollow evidence-based guidelines for preventing healthcare-associated infections.Furthermore, the aim has been to examine the articles regarding the data collection method.Method: A descriptive literature survey based on fourteen articles. Articles have beenexamined in terms of the data collection method.Main result: Several different factors contribute to why nurses do not follow evidence-based guidelines, where both internal and external factors interact. It’s clearly revealedthat nurses lack knowledge and practical skills. Nurses' beliefs about their own capacityand actual application of the guidelines correspond poorly with reality. It has alsoemerged that according to the nurses' beliefs about consequences, the nurse has atendency to minimize the extent of the consequences of their act or omission of action. Conclusion: Nurses lack knowledge about evidence-based guidelines for preventinghealthcare-associated infections. However, there are several factors that could explainwhy the guidelines are not applied.

Full textHealth care acquired infections are the most common injuries resulting from care that occur in Swedish hospitals and 9 % of hospitalized patients are affected annually. The aim of this study was to investigate the comments and complaints received by the Patients Advisory Committee regarding the hospitals shortcomings in hygiene and healthcare environment and health care acquired infections. To collect data cases received by Patients Advisory Committee during 160701-170630 were analysed. A descriptive design and qualitative data analysis was used. The results of this study showed that ten cases containing perceived shortcomings in hygiene and healthcare environment and 26 cases involving health care acquired infections were received by Patients Advisory Committee. Due to the experienced deficiencies in hygiene and the healthcare environment patients and close relatives considered the healthcare staff to be ignorant and sloppy. They also questioned their cleaning routines regarding the healthcare environment. As a patient, being affected by a health care acquired infection was described as frustrating, with extended care times and reduced confidence in the overall healthcare organization. Health care acquired infections caused physical and mental suffering. According to Virginia Henderson, the aim of nursing care would always be a better health for the persons being cared for and to help them regain their independence. The result of the study show that the health care system has failed in this regard. Increasing compliance to basic hygiene routines and the understanding of the patients’ situation lead to reduced suffering for patients and relatives.

Full textBackground: Central venous catheters today are not only common in intensive care units but have become a regular phenomenon in wards where non-specialised nurses work. With CVCs comes a risk for infections, both local and systemic. Hospital acquired infections, in particular catheter-related infections, are a major problem in health care and cause prolonged length of hospital stay as well as increased costs. The general nurse is responsible for the handling and care of CVCs, and therefore has a key part in preventing infections. Aim: To compile scientific literature regarding how the general nurse can prevent infections in patients with CVCs on general wards. Method: The chosen method of investigation was a literature review. A literature search was undertaken using Cinahl, PubMed and Cochrane Library. Following a quality assessment, ten scientific papers with a quantitative method were included. Results: Measures to prevent infection were sorted under four headlines: disinfection, education, dressing care, and technique for line changes. The measures within these groups were shown to reduce prevalence of catheter-related infections. Conclusion: Chlorhexidine solutions, disinfection caps, education and semipermeable dressings can lead to reduced prevalence of catheter-related infections in patients with CVCs. A “non-touch” technique may be a possible alternative when changing lines. More research is needed regarding preventive nursing measures outside the intensive care units, as well as more unified research to create clear guidelines.

Full textEvery year thousands of patients are affected by healthcare associated infections. Besides leading to a prolonged hospital stay and unnecessary suffering for the patient, it also costs the society billions annually. To prevent the spread of infec-tion, all healthcare professionals should use a good basal hygiene. Therefore, there are regulations which all healthcare staff are required to follow. The purpose of this study was to investigate compliance to the hygiene regulations among health-care staff and in which situations deficiencies would occur. This was examined in an observational study where healthcare professionals at one medical and one surgical ward were observed for a total of two weeks. The study showed both good and less good compliance. The regulations regarding apron were followed to 81 % and the guidelines regarding hair, jewelry and nails were followed to 100 %. Less good compliance were seen regarding the use of hand disinfection were the regulations were followed to 47 %. Gloves were used to 59 % when indicated. At the same time gloves were worn at several occasions when not indicated. Situations where staff went outside the room wearing the patient bound apron occurred frequently.
