With the addition of profits, the company can pay all costs that are sacrificed, so that the company's operational activities are guaranteed and can run well. The problems examined in this study are intended to find out how the comparison of recording costs using the full costing method and variable costing affects the net profit of PT Bhaskara Madya Jaya. Both of these methods simultaneously involve raw materials, direct labor costs and factory overhead costs. What distinguishes the full costing method using fixed factory overhead loads and variable, if the variable costing only adds to the variable overhead load. Production costs that are not included in the raw material and direct labor costs are the overhead of the manufacturing plant itself. Descriptive method with a quantitative approach is the model of this research. With the use of saturated sampling. Documentation is a data collection technique that researchers use. The results of the study and details obtained by comparing the full costing method and variable costing. In detailing the cost of production, the full costing method produced a greater than the costing variable, this is due to the full costing method adding all the elements of costs, variable costs or fixed costs . Then from the results of the breakdown of net income, using the full costing method, the nominal profit is found to be far less than using the variable costing method.

This research is a descriptive research with quantitative approach done on UKM Tahu Boga Rasa. This study has four main objectives. First, aims to find out the analysis of working capital needs in determination the cost of production by using the method of variable costing and activity based costing. Second, to know the analysis of working capital needs for profit growth. Thirdly, to determine of cost of production by using variable costing and activity based costing method for profit growth. Fourth, to analyse of working capital needs in determine the cost of production by using the method of variable costing and activity based costing and its benefits for profit growth. The need for working capital in determine the cost of production by using the variable costing method is lower than the determination of cost of production method of activity based costing and its benefits for profit growth is to show the same value of profit growth, this is caused by the components of cost of production by using costing and activity based costing variables are different, so the value of working capital needs based on the determination of cost of production by using the method of variable costing is lower than the determination of cost of production using activity based costing method. In addition, the relatively fixed selling price results in relatively equal net profit value, but the production cost occurrs fluctuations and daily life expenses of the owner of UKM Tahu Boga Rasa is still borne by the business or not separated.

The objective of this study was to find out components of production cost and analyzing the cost of production materials which used full costing method and variable costing method. This research was conducted at October 2019 on PT. Katingan Timber Celebes Wamlana Village, Fenaleisela Subdistrict, Buru Regency. The company is a buried sawmill industry at Buru Island when has a primary industrial license for timber. Research data were collected by observation, documentation and interview methods, and then analyzed by full costing and variable costing methods. The result showed that the components of production cost consist of raw materials cost, direct labor cost used fixed factory overhead cost and variable factory overhead cost. The cost of production used costing method have value of Rp.5.120.341.644,- more higher compered to variable costing is Rp.4.542.320.899,- the difference value of the cost of production due to full costing methods which imposes the fixed overhead cost and the variable overhead cost, that the cost of production is higher than with variable costing methods which imposes by factory overhead cost.

The calculation of the cost of production is very important for manufacturing companies considering that one of the benefits of the cost of production is to determine the selling price of the product. There are two methods in determining the cost of production, namely the full costing method and the variable costing method. The purpose of this study is to find out how to calculate the cost of production using the full costing method and variable costing to determine the selling price on CV Starnine. The method in this research is quantitative descriptive method. The research data collection technique is by observation, interview and documentation. The results showed that there were weaknesses in the calculation of the company's cost of production. Based on the comparison between the full costing method and the variable costing method of the company's cost of production, the cost of production according to the full costing method has a nominal value that is higher than the variable costing method. This is because in the calculation of the cost of production the full costing method takes into account all costs incurred by the company while producing both variable and fixed products.

This research was conducted at Krisna Karya Mulya UKM in Panarung Palangka Raya City, the purpose of this study was to find out the method of calculating the cost of tofu production at Krisna Karya Mulya UKM in Palangka Raya. This research uses quantitative methods. The results showed that the use of the variable costing method in Krisna Karya Mulya UKM turned out to be cheaper or significant compared to using the full costing method because in the variable costing method a profit calculation was greater than the value. Meanwhile, the results of tofu production calculation in UKM Krisna Karya Mulya if using the full costing method will be greater or experience a significant increase when compared to the calculation of the variable costing method. This means that the use of variable costing methods in tofu production businesses in Krisna Karya Mulya SMEs is not appropriate because in the variable costing method the amount of overhead depreciation costs is not counted, so there are costs that should appear in the production process but become unidentified.

This study used descriptive method and used primary and secondary data. The finding of research can be concluded that calculation of bag production cost type 3673 using company method, full costing, and variable costing each equal to Rp66.700, Rp69.830, and Rp68.700. While for the selling price of type 3673 bag using company method, full costing, and variable costing of Rp199,900, Rp209,490 and Rp206,100 respectively. The difference in bag manufacturing cost calculation lies in the factory overhead cost consisting of the cost of depreciation of the factory sewing machine, the cost of factory table depreciation, the cost of factory maintenance and the cost of factory utility.

Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) is a form of community small business and is one of the home industry businesses that has experienced rapid development. Most SMEs still use simple or conventional cost accounting methods in calculating the cost of production while the business world is currently experiencing increasingly rapid development so it must require a current report that is quite accurate and reliable. Direct costing is a method of determining the cost of production that only takes into account variable production costs or which directly affects production volume. Direct costing is often called variable costing and marginal costing.
This study aims to determine the implementation of the direct costing method in Nangaba VCO SMEs in addition to knowing the classification of costs in calculating the cost of production using the direct costing method. This type of research is qualitative. Analysis of the data used is a qualitative descriptive analysis which is an analysis that describes or provides an overview of how to determine the cost of goods using variable costing or direct costing in the Nangaba Ende VCO industry.
The results of this study indicate that there are differences in the calculation of the cost of production and the net profit made by the company much lower when compared to using the calculation by the direct costing method.

Indramukti Segara is a fast food company that comes from natural ingredients. Products produced by PT. Indramukti Segara includes: pecel sauce and fried onions. Calculation of cost of goods manufactured by PT. Indramukti Segara is not right to determine the selling price, because the company only calculates the material used multiplied by the price of the material. On this occasion the author analyzes the cost of production in accordance with the Cost Accounting standard and conducts a comparison between two methods, namely: the full costing method and the variable costing method. The purpose of this study is to compare the cost of production using the full cost and variable costs method. The data collected comes from the results of interviews with the Production Administration, Sambel Pecel production supervisor, and employees of Sambel production at PT. Indramukti Segara. Data obtained includes data on raw material expenditure, direct labor costs, and factory overhead costs that are fixed and variable. Based on the comparison of the calculation of Cost of Production between the full cost method and variable costs there are differences, because the full cost method calculates all costs that are fixed and variable while the variable cost method only calculates costs that are variable in nature.

<p><em>Every company is required to run its business very well. The success of a company is very much determined by the accuracy and ability of the leader in managing the company. Production costs are one part of the internal steps that must be taken in increasing efficiency. In Islam there is a classification of costs before calculating production costs because not all funds that come out are calculated as production costs. The company can exercise control over activities that do not add value, which refers to cost control to be effective by applying Variable Coasting methods. Because it is seen from the method of calculation, the variable costing approach is more practical and easy to analyze. The results show that, using a calculation with a variable costing approach, the total production costs are lower than the calculation of real use, which is Rp. 55. 718,000 while using the real calculation, the results are greater, which is Rp. It can be seen that the calculation of the company's real production costs is higher than the calculation of production costs using the variable costing method. There is also the main difference between the real calculation of the company and the calculation of variable costing which is located in the treatment of factory overhead costs. Accounting calculations on companies are needed at the production price and selling price at a company. In this case then direct this research in the calculation of production prices and selling prices. The data needed in this study can be obtained through documentation and field research. The data obtained in this analysis uses the Descriptive Quantitative method, based on the analysis shows that the calculation of production costs and selling prices using the calculation method carried out by the UD with the calculation of production costs using the variable costing method is lower than the calculations made by the company. Because the variable costing method calculates the variable costs associated with the production process and selling prices while the calculation method applied by the company lists all costs including variable overhead costs and fixed overhead costs. So that there is a difference in production costs and selling prices according to company methods and variable costing methods.

To determine the cost of production according to UD. Karunia. 2]. To determine the cost of production using the variable costing method at UD. Karunia. 3]. To find out the effect of changes in the method of calculating the cost of production and determining the new selling price of profits at UD. Karunia. This research is a descriptive qualitative study. This research was conducted at UD. Karunia Banyuwangi by using primary data and secondary data. Primary data is obtained through interviews with a deep, open, and structured nature. Secondary data obtained from documents belonging to UD. Karunia. Data analysis techniques are done by data reduction, data triangulation, data presentation and conclusion drawing. The results of this study indicate that UD. Karunia use the full costing method and it is produced that the cost of producing sponge cake is Rp 4.730 per pack. The calculation using the variable costing method resulted in the cost of producing sponge cake amounting to Rp 4.121, resulting in a lower difference of Rp 609. Changes in the calculation of cost of production were made as the basis for adjusting the newselling price of sponge cake to Rp 8.000 per pack and profit decreased by Rp 2.170.405.

The purpose of this study was to analyze the determination of cost of goods manufactured by using full costing and variable costing, approachment and to get the information about the difference of selling price between the one which is stated by MSMEs in beef jerky processing industry in Banda Aceh and the one which is the result based on cost plus pricing method. This type of research is descriptive analysis. Based on certain criterias, there are 3 MSMEs as the samples of the research. This research shows that the cost of production of the full costing method is greater than the variable costing method. Results of determining the selling price of products also shows that there is a difference between the selling price of the products specified MSMEs of beef jerky with a selling price obtained from cost plus pricing method.

This study investigates the consequences of adopting two simple sets of rules the manager can consider as perfectly rational and follow in his decisions regarding price, volume and mix of the various products. The first set follows the full (absorption) costing method logic, while the second is based on the direct (variable, marginal) costing method logic. It shows that costing systems adopting the full-costing method can lead management to make non-rational decisions regarding the setting of prices, acceptance of orders, make or buy choices and, above all, determination of the optimal production mix through programming and budgeting. On the other hand, using the direct costing method allows the manager to achieve rational results during the decision-making and planning phases, even if these often appear counter-intuitive when compared with the results achieved using the full costing method, which seem to conform to naïve intuition. The risk in the latter case is even more serious when we are dealing with multi-production firms operating under conditions of limited production capacity regarding one or more factors, as occurs most of the time. The demonstration of the thesis of the superiority of direct costing method rules in management decisions related to the problem of the matching costs and revenues is carried out with numerical evidence, formulating a set of decision problems that are solved by comparing the results obtained both with the full costing method rules and with the direct costing method rules.

Abstract.This study aims to find out how the application of hotel room rental prices by using activity based costing at de’Kayakini Bandung hotels. This study uses descriptive research methods. Descriptive research to determine the difference in activity based costing methods with traditional methods. In this study there is only one type of variable used, namely rent. The rental price is the amount of money that will be paid for something to be received, the rental price in this study is the selling price. The data sources used in this study are secondary data sources. Secondary data is obtained from Hotel De’Kayakini in the form of hotel cost reports. The data processed in this study are primary data obtained from the source directly based on real data recorded during the practice or simulation of making Jipang cake at the research location and community service. Determination of the selling price is very influential to maintain the continuity of a company. The selling price offered by the company must be right, because if the selling price offered is too high then the consumer will think twice and switch to another company, and vice versa if the price offered is too low then the costs incurred by the company cannot be covered even will loss. Cost-plus pricing is one of the methods used in determining the price of a product or service to be sold. Cost-plus pricing is a method of determining selling prices by adding expected profits above the full future costs of producing and marketing products. The aim of this research is to find out the Determination of the Cost of Products and the Implementation of the cost plus pricing method in the Determination of the Selling Price in the Dabu-Dabu Lemong Grilled Fish Restaurant. The results showed that there were differences in the analysis results between the two approaches in the cost plus pricing method. The final analysis results obtained, the selling price formed by variable costing is higher than the full costing approach. But when viewed from the cost of production, the variable costing approach produces a lower value compared to full costing. The selling price set by the current owner has a difference if calculated using the cost plus pricing method. Broadly speaking, the selling price set by the current owner is not a favorable price when compared to the selling price calculated.

Micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in Indonesia have a very large and important contribution to the country's economy. MSMEs currently running in the community consist of many fields, one of which is the use of Indonesian agricultural products. Coconut oil can be used as cooking oil, margarine and white butter, a component in soap making and cosmetic formulations. MSMEs making coconut oil have quite a large business opportunity, one of which is the Maida Coconut Cooking Oil Business which is located in Galang District, Deli Serdang Regency. The amount of coconut oil produced is still on a small scale. This is due to very simple equipment, high selling prices, and limited range of marketing strategies. This activity aims to help Maida MSMEs to increase production by providing assistance in the form of equipment and determining the proper cost of goods sold. The results showed that the cost of goods sold obtained before adding tools based on the full costing method was IDR 41,746/L and variable costing was IDR 39,236/L. Meanwhile, after adding equipment based on the full costing method it is IDR 104,211/L and variable costing is IDR 89,757/L.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to present the use of activity-based costing (ABC) approach as an alternative option to the traditional cost accounting system. The contribution of this study is to demonstrate, through a simple example, the application of that costing system in a service (maintenance) industry, i.e. the paper intended to develop a procedure for a cost model that help in calculating any maintenance job cost, to a reasonable degree of accuracy, based on the actual activities performed. Design/methodology/approach – This research uses a simple example whereby hypothetical activities and cost data of maintaining an injector and a pump, of an internal combustion engine, are used, presented and analyzed based on the use of the developed procedure. Findings – ABC system provides more accurate cost estimates rather than the traditional “order costing” methods that uses unit-level costs which are variable in relation to change in service volume. Traditional cost methods distort the costs by applying overhead uniformly over different jobs of varied complexities and activities scope. On the other hand, ABC is a useful means to distribute the overhead costs in proportion (fairly) to the actual activities performed in a specific job and, hence, enhance the rationality of decision making, i.e. will not distort the accounting information used for cost reduction, pricing, and evaluation matters. The results obtained from the analysis showed that allocating costs to the maintained injector decreased from $83.55 to $71.95 and, finally, to $67.57 when using the workshop-wide, two-stage and ABC overhead allocation methods, respectively; while that of the pump increased from $298.90 to $340.34 and, finally, to $359.48 when using the same three methods, in the same order, respectively. The result is quite fair when considering the complexity of the fuel pump, in terms of design and maintenance, when compared with the injector. Notice that using volume to allocate overhead costs results in over costing high-volume products, e.g. injectors (simple in terms of design and operation) and under costing low-volume products, e.g. pumps (more complex in terms of design and operation). The paper recommends to use ABC as a more accurate and fair method when charging maintenance job orders based on the analysis of costing two maintained items in the same premise while consuming different overhead resources. Practical implications – This study attempts to analyze different methods to calculate a specific corrective maintenance job order. It strives to remedy the drawbacks of the traditional overhead costing of a job order when using principles related to the size of service, such as the direct labor cost/hours, as an allocation base. Consequently, the study proposed a new costing method, i.e. application of ABC. The traditional costing approach is considered by many firms as the best costing method. Nevertheless, it allocates overhead cost over job performed uniformly (equally) not differentiating between the complexity of the job and variety of the activities performed, e.g. using the same allocation base for “oil change” and “fuel pump adjustment” activities. So, ABC prevents cost distortions (unfairness) that could not be prevented by traditional cost accounting system. The author believes that the method presented in this paper will provide a useful management tool for costing maintenance jobs based on the appropriate selected activity drivers in maintenance workshops. The method could be applied for costing maintenance activities in maintenance of all industrial sectors. Originality/value – The use of traditional costing method has proven to be distorted by applying overhead uniformly over different jobs of varied complexities and activities scope. In this paper the authors strive to present an effective costing alternative that outperforms the traditional ones with regard to overhead allocation. The paper aims to find reliable and fair maintenance costing method, i.e. to find out the relationships between maintenance activities and cost drivers. Although, ABC is widely used in manufacturing industry, no application or current research has presented an applicable thorough worked-out example, with the exception, to the author’s knowledge, of one in the aeronautical industry, to implement ABC method in maintenance industry. The importance of using this method comes from the fact that it provides, relatively, accurate and fair maintenance bills that provide customer satisfaction and firm good image. Hence, the paper is relevant in this respect and intended to contribute to the practice of maintenance management.

Objectives: This study proposes the method requirements for a valid costing study in anesthesia to allow differences to be identified between treatments and uses these method requirements to design and conduct a robust costing study.Methods: A prospective, patient-based costing study was carried out in adult and pediatric day surgery in the United Kingdom. The perspective was that of the National Health Service and the patient. Data were collected for each patient until 7 days after hospital discharge.Results: Data were collected for 1,063 adults and 322 children undergoing day surgery between October 1999 and January 2001. Statistically significant differences were found only between variable costs, which accounted for 11.4 percent and 9.0 percent of adult and pediatric costs, respectively. There were no differences in length of stay, fixed costs, or semi-fixed costs. Differences were not found in total costs in adults but were found in children. By day 7, postdischarge primary and secondary care costs were not different between groups in either study. No differences were found in costs to patients or parents.Conclusions: The use of prospective, patient-based cost data enabled the detection of differences in variable costs between difference anesthetic regimens in day surgery. The stochastic nature of the data provided a measure of variability around mean cost estimates. Practice patterns in the study reflected normal practice in the United Kingdom so the costing data have direct clinical relevance. The use of different anesthetic agents only affected variable costs and had no effect on larger cost drivers such as length of stay or staff input.

Activity based costing is calculation system which correlating expense with the activity using resources and also adding the costs of resources to object cost like product, service or account of relocation intermediaries expense/cost by activity conductedfor the object cost. The results showed that the operating profit of used goods sales generated using Activity Based Costing method is greater than if using conventional system.

Objective: To examine the cost impact of referral to a Mood Disorders Unit (MDU), by comparing pre-service and post-service costs, and MDU and control samples. Method: We studied tertiary referral MDU patients and a control group of consultants' depressed patients, with the principal comparison intervals being: (i) 12 months prior to and (ii) 6 months following baseline assessment, with costs annualised to allow the impact of assessment and treatment recommendation to be determined. In addition, we assessed any ‘personal cost’ of depression. Results: Following baseline assessment, MDU referrals showed a reduction in costs, while controls' costs increased, largely driven by contrasting directions in hospitalisation and social welfare costs. We identify variables associated with high and increased costs, including features of the earlier stages of the disorder, whether social welfare was received, diagnostic subtype and personality dysfunction, with multivariate analyses refining the variable sets. Self-report data indicated that patients judged the ‘personal cost’ of depression to exceed more formal cost parameters, so that to experience depression is itself depressogenic. Conclusions: This first Australian attempt to cost depression and its management in the clinical setting more provides a methodology for wider application in service evaluation studies rather than delivers an unequivocal answer to whether a specialist Mood Disorders Unit is cost efficient or not.

Lemari Syukur Factory is a home industry that produces wardrobe cabinets. It determines selling price based estimation which is inappropriate. The main issue is that the company does not possess proper cost classification system in determining the cost of goods sold. This research is aimed to assist determining the cost of production as the basis for making up finished goods price using full costing method. This research includes quallitative analysis research. Data were collected through interviews and documentation and analyzed by qualitative analysis techniques.
The study resulted (1) for cost of goods sold calculation, the factory charged direct material costs of Rp. 325.000.000, direct labor cost of Rp. 211.200.000 and factory overhead cost of Rp. 556,800,000. Total production cost to produce 2,196 units of cabinets in one year amounted to Rp. 1.093.000.000. The factory estimated cost of goods sold for each unit is of Rp. 497.723, and the selling price per cabinet unit is Rp. 500.000. (2) Using full costing method, the cost calculation consisted of direct material costs of Rp. 325.000.000, direct labor cost equal to Rp. 211.200.000, factory overhead fixed cost Rp. 12,042,250, and variable factory overhead cost Rp. Rp. 525.550.000. Thus, the cost of production was Rp. 1,073,792,250 for 2,196 units of cabinets. The cost of goods sold per cabinet unit is Rp. 488.976 and the selling price is Rp. 619.559. (3) The difference in cost of goods sold between full costing and the factory calculation is of Rp 8.747. While the difference between finished product price using full costing and the factory estimation is Rp 133.766.

Micro-costing data collection tools often used in literature include standardized comprehensive templates, targeted questionnaires, activity logs, on-site administrative databases, and direct observation. These tools are not mutually exclusive and are often used in combination. Each tool has unique merits and limitations, and some may be more applicable than others under different circumstances. Proper application of micro-costing tools can produce quality cost estimates and enhance the usefulness of economic evaluations to inform resource allocation decisions. A common method to derive both fixed and variable costs of an intervention involves collecting data from the bottom up for each resource consumed (micro-costing). We scanned economic evaluation literature published in 2008-2018 and identified micro-costing data collection tools used. We categorized the identified tools and discuss their practical applications in an example study of health interventions, including their potential strengths and weaknesses. Sound economic evaluations of health interventions provide valuable information for justifying resource allocation decisions, planning for implementation, and enhancing the sustainability of the interventions. However, the quality of intervention cost estimates is seldom addressed in the literature. Reliable cost data forms the foundation of economic evaluations, and without reliable estimates, evaluation results, such as cost-effectiveness measures, could be misleading. In this project, we identified data collection tools often used to obtain reliable data for estimating costs of interventions that prevent and manage chronic conditions and considered practical applications to promote their use.

Background: During the last decades the combination of international economic and healthcare crisis has led to pressure on healthcare systems and has made financial evaluations particularly important.Aim: To measure the total cost in ICUs, to analyze its components, and their changes during the study period.Method and Material: All cost components in four cost categories (direct-variable, direct-fixed, indirect-variable, and indirect-fixed) of all patients admitted in a 6-bed mixed type adult ICU in a general (non-university) hospital of northern Greece in two consecutive periods, with total duration 2 years was measured. The direct-variable cost (medications, consumables, and diagnostic tests) was assessed with bottom-up (micro-costing) method while for the cost components of rest three categories the top-down (attributable costing) was used. Results: In a 331 patients’ sample with 2823 total patient days, the sum cost was 2,417,788€ (1,370,420€ and 1,047,368€ in 1st and 2nd period respectively). The direct variable cost was 897,866.07€ (37.14%), the direct-fixed 1,049,068.6€ (43.39%), the indirect-variable 45,210.6€ (1.87%), and the indirect-fixed 425,643.0€ (17.60%). The mean daily cost per patient was 835.62€ and 885.35€, and the total cost per patient was 7,967.6€ and 6,587.2€ in the two periods of study respectively. The total cost of all non-survivors’ patients (N=85, 25.7%) was 595,009.1€ and the efficiency cost per survivor 9,828.4€. The mean daily cost and the total cost per survivor was 840.8€ and 7,409.7€ while for non-survivors was και 908.4€ and 7,000.1€ respectively. During the second study period, a reduction in total costs was observed and especially in direct-variable category attributed mainly to the prices of medicines consumables, and staff gradual costs reductions.Conclusions: Changes in cost categories vary over time due to social and financial factors while the variables as the ICU environment or patient’s characteristics as severity of disease are the main cost drivers. Monitoring and recording of cost components variance would help with valuable information to healthcare managers, doctors, or nursing leaders. Extending this study with a multicenter to more ICUs could provide clearer conclusions about cost variability.

This work presents the implementation of a costing system in Fleet Management at a Brazilian Public University, applying concepts of cost accounting, engineering, indexes, and maintenance management, as well as using the cost absorption method. As a methodology, an action research is applied to meet the objectives of being exploratory and descriptive; about the nature of the research, and applied research is adopted through a case study procedure in a Transport Coordination. To prepare for this work, the operational data of the fleet were collected during 12 months in the different units and internal control systems. The results of the study showed the operating costs of the fleet such as total fuel spent annually, totally spent on maintenance, as well as their respective indices, cost per kilometer, fixed and variable costs sufficient for accountability with the Official Bodies of Control. It was noted that the study applied in this work provided a basis for implementing a Costing System for fleet management of a Brazilian public university, respecting the guidelines of Normative Instruction No. 3, of May 15, 2008, which deals with the use and accountability, even fully complied with the requirements of the regulations regarding the Performance Control and Maintenance Maps of the Official Vehicle in an individualized manner, providing information on operational costing of the fleet sufficient for the decisions of the managers of the Public Institution.

To know the profit contribution of each marketing area, it is necessary to create income statement with segmented reporting approach (segmented reporting) each marketing area. Segmented reporting contains information about the amount of sales and certain the costs each marketing area. The purpose of this study is to determine the profit contribution generated by each marketing area in Anandia Bakery April 2017. This study uses variable costing method, which is useful to determine the cost of production just based on variable costs. The results of this study stated that all marketing areas owned by Anandia Bakery in April of 2017 are profitable. It can evidenced by the percentage of segment margin ratio for each large marketing area, it is above 40%. When the result of margin ratio more larger, the profit contribution that given by the marketing area is getting better.

<p>Most of the companies today have no idea what their products cost them to make. Usually companies think they do know but unfortunately they are not correct. This misunderstanding has led many business organizations to make decisions that are bad to the business. They might abandon profitable products in favor of products that are losing money. However, the companies’ cost information just does not help! Generally managers receive cost information that is misleading and harmful, and make them do the wrong things in their work place.</p><p>This damaging information comes from full absorption costing (both fixed and variable costs) of calculating total product costs. The costing system calculates product costs by allocating a portion of the overhead or indirect costs to each products being manufactured. The amount of the overhead cost allocated is based on the amount of direct hours or direct labor costs required to make the product. This method of allocating is a good approach of allocating overheads many years ago when direct labor was the largest portion of cost required to make a product and when overheads were small.</p><p>The problems associated with this allocation methods were highlighted in the late 1980s with the publication of the influential book “<em>Relevance Lost; the Rise and Fall of Management Accounting</em>” by Tom Johnson and Bob Kaplan. Johnson and Kaplan showed that the historical development of cost and management accounting has given rise to inappropriate methods of allocating overhead costs. These methods of allocation lead to cost distortion. This resulted in managers making the wrong strategic decision. The overall objective of this study is to investigate and assess how ABC provides the company with additional competitive edge to compete in the globalization environment.</p>The principle of activity-based costing has been a much talked about tools in the 1980s and 1990s. But is ABC really the strategic tool to achieve competitive advantage as expected? How the companies should approach the implementation of ABC in order to achieve the required results. What the companies should expect from the ABC? What is the future of ABC?

Neospora caninum is a protozoan parasite, reported as a leading cause of cattle abortions and reproductive failure worldwide, costing the cattle industry approximately $1.3 billion annually. With wild pig (Sus scrofa) populations estimated at over six million in the United States, contact between wild pigs and livestock is inevitable, mainly because of the widespread geographic co-occurrence of the two species. As a known reservoir for numerous fungal, bacterial, viral and parasitic diseases, wild pigs are of particular importance for human and veterinary health relative to the prevention of infectious diseases. The seroprevalence of N. caninum in wild pig populations was previously documented in the United States, raising the question as to their exposure point of prevalence. This research screened 116 individual wild pigs for N. caninum using a variety of available assays. Using two different commercially available ELISA test kits, seroprevalence ranged from 12.5% to 67.8%. The Indirect Fluorescent Antibody Test resulted in our highest percent seroprevalence for these samples, at 84.1%. However, none of our samples showed any presence of N. caninum or associated pathologies via histological evaluation of representative tissues. Importantly, the assays used in this study were not congruent with all duplicate samples or between the test types used. The implications of these non-congruent results demonstrates that currently available testing assays produce variable results, underscoring the need for more reliable testing kits and a standardized methodology when assessing disease prevalence in wildlife, particularly for N. caninum in wild pigs, which impacts prevalence and comparability across studies.

Estimating health care costs for patients who are lost to follow-up or censored often results in underestimating costs, biasing comparative assessments. This study compared traditional costing approaches with that of KMSA methods for patients treated for metastatic bladder cancer. Methods: Advanced metastatic bladder cancer patients receiving second line chemotherapy were identified from the Truven Health MarketScan Claims Databases (04/2011 to 09/2014). All-cause health care costs represent the total dollars paid to all providers of care regardless of diagnosis and were inflated to 2014 USD. Total, medical, pharmacy, and site-of-care costs from treatment initiation to death, end-of-enrollment, or end-of-study period were compared using the KMSA and traditional methods. In KMSA, the follow-up period is divided into small uniform intervals; total cost in each interval is then multiplied by the individual patient’s survival probability at the beginning of each interval and then summed across the intervals. Results: The censoring rate of patients’ follow-up was 49%. The mean per patient total health care captured by traditional method was only 72% of the total cost estimated by KMSA method or $32,930 less per patient. Overall, underestimates ranged from 28% to 41% with pharmacy, ER, and lab service costs underestimated the largest when using the traditional method. Conclusions: The KMSA produced estimates more reflective of actual patient-level health care costs in this claims-based observational cancer study compared to traditional methods by accounting for the effect of censoring. Researchers should consider KMSA when evaluating and comparing costs of care in the presence of variable follow-up.[Table: see text]

Método: Estudo descritivo, do tipo relato de experiência, que descreve uma metodologia desenvolvida para o cálculo do custo de tecnologias que previnem o erro de medicação em instituição hospitalar. Resultados: As tecnologias foram classificadas em leve, leve-dura e dura. Para o cálculo do custo, foi aplicado método de custeio direto, utilizando as variáveis de mão de obra e materiais e/ou equipamentos utilizados para o uso dessas tecnologias. Após cálculo de cada variável individualmente, estas foram somadas obtendo-se os custos das tecnologias preventivas. Conclusões: O conhecimento do método de cálculo desse custo proporciona uma visão real do investimento, auxiliando a tomada de decisão do gestor, e incentivo à prevenção do erro de medicação.

Purpose: To report the experience in the development of a methodology in order to calculate the cost of technology that prevents medication error in a hospital institution. Method: Descriptive study, a case report format, describing a methodology developed to calculate the cost of technology in order to prevent medication error in a hospital institution. Results: Technologies were classified as soft, soft-hard and hard. Direct costing method was applied with a view to calculate the cost by using labor variables and/or equipment for the use of those technologies. Thereafter the calculation of each variable, they were summed and it was possible to obtain the cost of preventive technologies. Conclusion: Awareness about calculation method provides a real overview of the investment; it benefits the manager’s decision taking and encourages the medication error prevention.

Introduction:Extracorporeal circulatory membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is a technology that allows recovery of adults in cardiorespiratory failure with encouraging results, but is not available in the Brazilian universal public health system (SUS) due to high implementation costs. Time-driven activity based costing (TDABC) is applied to measure processes in an economic perspective by identifying opportunities to make processes more efficient through the reduction of resources used in each activity. The literature has explored the use of TDABC to measure costs related with clinical procedures and technologies in microcosting studies, identifying opportunities to improve the process by making it more efficient. This research measures the real costs to implement ECMO in Brazil to compare with the current public reimbursement system.Methods:This study applied TDABC using data from 6 patients to measure costs of ECMO intervention considering the public perspective in Brazil. In sequence, standard price payed by SUS was used to estimate the current reimbursement amount received by the hospital for ECMO procedure. Cost variable analysis was conducted to understand when and how patients receiving ECMO are using hospital resources. Cost data were collected from an academic public hospital using an average of 18 months (2016–2017) for the department costs.Results:The real average cost was USD 128,923. Most significant resource costs was medical staff, particularly for the three survivor patients, and the ECMO equipment presented the second highest cost. ECMO activities were separated into: before implantation of ECMO, period using ECMO, intensive care post-ECMO and rehabilitation, being the period where ECMO is the most expensive, particularly in nurse and physician costs. The SUS average was USD 31,437, which shows a difference of USD 97,485 between the real ECMO cost and the public reimbursement in Brazil.Conclusions:A critical element of the propagation of ECMO in Brazil and its reimbursement by public health system is the high cost and out-of-date standard payments by the Ministry of Health. Effort to implement a trustworthy method to guide decisions of SUS for the adoption and financing new technologies is essential to contribute to the optimization of public health policies in a country with a universal health system and limited resources dedicated to health sectors.

Workforce aging is becoming a significant public health problem due to the resulting emergence of age-related diseases, such as osteoporosis. The prevention and early detection of osteoporosis is important to avoid bone fractures and their socio-economic burden. The aim of this study is to evaluate the sustainability of a screening workplace program able to detect workers with osteoporosis. The screening process included a questionnaire-based risk assessment of 1050 healthcare workers followed by measurement of the bone mass density (BMD) with a pulse-echo ultrasound (PEUS) at the proximal tibia in the at-risk subjects. Workers with a BMD value ≤ 0.783 g/cm² were referred to a specialist visit ensuring a diagnosis and the consequent prescriptions. Any possible association between the outcome variable BMD ≤ 0.783 g/cm² and the risk factors was evaluated. The costs were calculated with a full costing method. We identified 60 pathological subjects. We observed increased risks for women, older ages, and menopause (p < 0.01). The yearly cost of our screening program estimated for this study was 8242 euros, and, considering the fragility bone fracture costs, we hypothesize a considerable economic savings, with a possible positive benefits/cost ratio of 2.07. We can say that the margin between the investment and results leads to a preference for this type of screening program. Osteoporosis is an occupational health problem, and a workplace screening program could be a cost-effective intervention.

Abstract Background Full-thickness injuries to the hand require durable soft tissue coverage to preserve tendon gliding and hand motion. We aim to investigate the cost effectiveness of hand resurfacing comparing free fascial flap reconstruction versus bilaminate synthetic dermal matrices. Methods Cost effectiveness was modeled using decision tree analysis with the rollback method. Total active range of motion was modeled as the common outcome variable based on systematic literature review. Costing was performed from a payer perspective using national Medicare reimbursements. The willingness to pay threshold was determined by average worker's compensation for hand disability. Probabilistic sensitivity analysis was conducted for range of motion outcomes and the costs using 10,000 Monte Carlo simulations. Results The average cost of free fascial flap reconstruction was $14,201.24 compared with $13,674.20 for Integra, yielding an incremental cost difference of $527.04. Incremental range of motion improvement was 18.0 degrees with free fascial flaps, yielding an incremental cost effectiveness ratio of $29.30/degree of motion. Assuming willingness to pay thresholds of $557.00/degree of motion, free-fascial flaps were highly cost effective. On probabilistic sensitivity analysis, free fascial flaps were dominant in 25.5% of simulations and cost effective in 32.1% of simulations. Thus, microsurgical reconstruction was the economically sound technique in 57.5% of scenarios. Conclusion Free fascial flap reconstruction of complex hand wounds was marginally more expensive than synthetic dermal matrix and yielded incrementally better outcomes. Both dermal matrix and microsurgical techniques were cost effective in the base case and in sensitivity analysis. In choosing between dermal matrix and microsurgical reconstruction of complex hand wounds, neither technique has a clear economic advantage.

Introduction: Open tibia fractures are some of the most common types of Orthopedics injuries in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). In Tanzania, open tibia fractures are treated either conservatively by prolonged cast or surgically by external fixation (EF) or intramedullary nail (IMN) when available. The cost of treatment and amount of time patients spend away from work are major economic concerns with prolonged casting and EF. The goal of this study was to determine the cost effectiveness of IMN versus EF in the treatment of open diaphyseal tibia fractures at Muhimbili Orthopaedic Institute (Dar es Salaam, Tanzania). Methods: This is a prospective randomized control study conducted of patients with a closeable AO/OTA 42 open diaphyseal tibia fracture. The patients underwent surgical fixation with either IMN or EF at Muhimbili Orthopaedic Institute (MOI), and were followed up at 2, 6, and 12 weeks postoperatively. A micro-costing method was used to estimate the fixed and variable costs of IMN and EF of the open diaphyseal tibial fracture. Results: The mean total cost per patient was lower for the IMN group ($425.8 ± 38.4) compared to the EF group ($559.6 ± 70.5, p < 0.001), with savings of $133.80 per patient for the IMN group. The mean hospital stay was 2.72 ± 1.40 days for the IMN group and 2.44 ± 1.47 days for the EF group (p = 0.5). Quality-adjusted life years (QALYs) were 0.26 per patient for the IMN group and 0.24 in the EF group at 12 weeks (p = 0.8). Ninety-two percent of patients in the IMN group achieved fracture union versus 60% in the EF group at three months postoperatively (p = 0.03). Conclusion: IM nailing of a closeable open diaphyseal tibial fracture is more cost effective than EF. In addition, IM nailing has better union rates at three months compared to EF.

Abstract Research background: When a company changes a few separated information systems into one integrated information system there can appear the obligation of costing method change. It happens especially when the company is a part of an international manufacturing corporation. Purpose: The main goal of the paper is to compare two methods of manufacturing operating income calculation and data presentation when a company changes a costing method from normal costing to standard costing. Research methodology: In the paper for this research comparative analysis was used between two methods of manufacturing operating income calculation. In the first method manufacturing operating income is the difference between revenues from manufacturing operations and the costs of goods manufactured. In the second one manufacturing operating income is calculated as a sum of production variances, purchase price variances, currency variances and inventory adjustments. Pearson’s correlation coefficients for pairs of variables were calculated in both of the costing methods. A comparative analysis was done on the basis of a case study executed in a big international wholesaler. The company is a member of an international manufacturing corporation. Results: The same manufacturing operating incomes were obtained in both methods. The absolute values of Pearson’s correlation coefficients were similar in normal and standard costing, but they differ in directions. Novelty: In standard costing manufacturing operating income is calculated as a sum of various types of variances. They are calculated as deviations from standard costs. It enables the easier identification of impacting a company’s results factors.

The basic principles and normative legal regulation of the organization of managerial (domestic) accounting and peculiarities of formation and reflection of overhead costs are considered. It is established that the organization of management (internal) accounting in general, including general production costs is not regulated and is not regulated by state bodies. It is organized by executives based on general principles, based on the internal needs of management. The main internal governing document for the organization of accounting of expenses at the enterprise is the Order on the organization of accounting and accounting policy. It is proved that the components of accounting cost policy are: methods of calculating production cost of products, works, services; list and composition of articles of calculation of production cost of production (works, services); list and composition of variable and fixed overhead costs; bases of distribution of production variables and distributed fixed costs. Different approaches to the choice of the system of calculation of production cost of production are noted. It is proved that the main factor in the choice of the calculation system is the industry peculiarities. The expediency of using the process (preliminary) method of costing of production is confirmed. The algorithm for calculating the cost of balls (hire) has been determined. The estimation of general expenses in the system of accounts of accounting at the metallurgical enterprise is estimated. Accounting violations have been established in terms of generating overhead costs and production costs. Effective methods of improvement of accounting of general costs of the metallurgical enterprise are offered. Purpose. To evaluate the current regulatory approaches to the organization of managerial (domestic) accounting in Ukraine, to present the features of forming accounting information on costs at metallurgical enterprises, to develop recommendations for improving the methodological aspects of accounting and distribution of overhead costs of metallurgical enterprises. Results. ObjectiveCosts for radiation therapy (rt) and the methods used to cost rt are highly diverse across the literature. To date, no study has compared various costing methods in detail. Our objective was to perform a thorough review of the radiation costing literature to identify sources of costs and methods used.Methods A systematic review of Ovid medline, Ovid oldmedline, embase, Ovid HealthStar, and EconLit from 2005 to 23 March 2015 used search terms such as “radiation,” “radiotherapy,” “neoplasm,” “cost,” “ cost analysis,” and “cost benefit analysis” to locate relevant articles. Original papers were reviewed for detailed costing methods. Cost sources and methods were extracted for papers investigating rt modalities, including three-dimensional conformal rt (3D-crt), intensity-modulated rt (imrt), stereotactic body rt (sbrt), and brachytherapy (bt). All costs were translated into 2014 U.S. dollars.Results Most of the studies (91%) reported in the 33 articles retrieved provided rt costs from the health system perspective. The cost of rt ranged from US$2,687.87 to US$111,900.60 per treatment for imrt, followed by US$5,583.28 to US$90,055 for 3D-crt, US$10,544.22 to US$78,667.40 for bt, and US$6,520.58 to US$19,602.68 for sbrt. Cost drivers were professional or personnel costs and the cost of rt treatment. Most studies did not address the cost of rt equipment (85%) and institutional or facility costs (66%).Conclusions Costing methods and sources were widely variable across studies, highlighting the need for consistency in the reporting of rt costs. More work to promote comparability and consistency across studies is needed.

This study aims to contribute to the planning process on product management. To do so it presents a integrated framework based on strategic cost management, using the methods target costing, activity-based cost (ABC) based on the product lifecycle. This proposal was structured as it follows: Phase 1: determining Target Cost; Phase 2: determining ABC defrayal to the light of the defrayal based on the product lifecycle. The research was elaborated to the light of specialized literature, from which we extracted the variables to formulate the methodology. After that, to show the feasibility and plausibility of the method we applied a hypothetical case study based on the development process of a product to the light of a course/MBA in Business Management in Institution of Higher Education in Brazil. The results were satisfactory and validated the proposal suggested. The survey findings indicate that the integrated method between ABC, target costing and products lifecycle applied in MBA Business Management is quite satisfactory.

This work presents a study on the cost formation process of a third-party service provider from the Federal Public Administration to draw a parallel with the strategic cost management using the absorption and variable costing methods. As a methodology, a qualitative-quantitative research strategy, of an applied nature, was used, through a case study in a company that provides cleaning, conservation, and sanitation services. Data on 13 types of inputs (the highest values) were analyzed over six months. The values were highlighted referring to the input data of the Bidding Notice that led to the contracting of the service provider company, the inputs consumed by the client, and the inputs purchased by the company. The results of the study indicate that the company bought twice as much (119%) than the amount foreseen in the notice on the analyzed period. Using the precepts of Strategic Cost Management, in parallel with the absorption and variable costing methods, it can be observed that in terms of making managerial decisions, the second (variable costing) forwards more critical information to the manager than the first ( absorption costing), resulting from the concern of complying with Brazilian tax legislation, without considering the inherent tax costs (not only) in the operational structure of the type of service object in this study.

Most methods and techniques in management accounting assume that a production technology consumes inputs in a fixed proportion. This paper develops product-costing measures for pricing and decision-making purposes for homogeneous variable-proportion technologies using first-order conditions and Euler's theorem. The results developed in this paper show that relevant costs under these circumstances are conventional full costs adjusted by a factor that is a function of returns to scale of a variable-proportion technology. In the development of the above results, it is shown that, for any technology, the price of a product is a linear function of its full cost only for a certain type of demand function. For all other demand functions, the relationship between the price and the full cost is nonlinear. The fixed- and the variable-proportion technologies are compared using a Monte Carlo simulation to determine the relative magnitudes of errors in product costs and prices, and differences in profit resulting from inappropriate use of a fixed-proportion model in a variable-proportion technology environment. The simulation results indicate that the costs are about 3 percent higher for fixed-proportion technology over a range of returns to scale values. The pricing error, on the other hand, is significant and varies from 70 percent lower to 50 percent higher compared to the correct prices. Variance analyses of difference in profits under the two technologies indicate that the errors in costing and pricing under fixed-proportion technology result in significantly lower profits.

Background: Identifying variation in musculoskeletal service costs requires the use of specific standardized metrics. There has been a large focus on costing, efficiency, and standardized metrics within the acute musculoskeletal setting, but far less attention in primary care and community settings. Objectives: To ( a) assess the quality of costing methods used within musculoskeletal economic analyses based primarily in primary and community settings and ( b) identify which cost variables are the key drivers of musculoskeletal health care costs within these settings. Methods: Medline, AMED, EMBASE, CINAHL, HMIC, BNI, and HBE electronic databases were searched for eligible studies. Two reviewers independently extracted data and assessed quality of costing methods using an established checklist. Results: Twenty-two studies met the review inclusion criteria. The majority of studies demonstrated moderate- to high-quality costing methods. Costing issues included studies failing to fully justify the economic perspective, and not distinguishing between short- and long-run costs. Highest unit costs were hospital admissions, outpatient visits, and imaging. Highest mean utilization were the following: general practitioner (GP) visits, outpatient visits, and physiotherapy visits. Highest mean costs per patient were GP visits, outpatient visits, and physiotherapy visits. Conclusion: This review identified a number of key resource use variables that are driving musculoskeletal health care costs in the community/primary care setting. High utilization of these resources (rather than high unit cost) appears to be the predominant factor increasing mean health care costs. There is, however, need for greater detail with capturing these key cost drivers, to further improve the accuracy of costing information.

Purpose: The main objective of the article is to develop and present a concept for the implementation of activity-based costing in a company dealing with multi-assortment production of bookbinding machinery. However, due to the publishing requirements, the article was divided into two parts – the first one describes the theoretical approach to the problem and the second one presents the case study. Therefore, the aim of this part of the considerations is to present the shortcomings of traditional methods of unit cost calculation in the light of the literature on the subject and to present the main assumptions and calculation procedures of the concept of activity-based costing. Design/methodology/approach: The main research methods used in this part of the considerations are: analysis of the literature on the subject and inference. Findings: The result of the research is the conclusion that the traditional methods of unit cost calculation, i.e. full costing and variable costing, are insufficient for effective cost management in the company. Originality/value: This part of the analysis presents in a synthetic way the identified main disadvantages of traditional unit costing methods. An alternative solution to the discussed problem was also presented here, i.e. the change of the applied costing system into an activity based costing system – analyzing its assumptions and calculation procedures. This content is directed both to persons dealing with these matters from the theoretical perspective, as well as company owners and heads of controlling or production departments.
