Svedin, Jeffrey David. "Characterizing the Spatial Variation of Crop Water Productivity for Variable-Rate Irrigation Management." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2018. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/6878.

Full text
Abstract:
Irrigated agriculture is the primary consumer of limited worldwide freshwater resources. Drought, growing world populations, and environmental demands compete with irrigation for freshwater resources"”threatening sustainable global food, fuel, and fiber production. This escalating global crisis demands that agriculture produce more food using less water. Traditional irrigation management has used technology to apply uniform irrigation rates across landscapes"”ignoring natural environmental variation. This provides inherent inefficiencies of over- or under- irrigation within individual fields.

Abstract:
The specific focus of this work is conserving irrigation water in Iraq. Agriculture is the main sector that consumes fresh water globally, mostly for irrigation, and it will be the sector most affected by increasing water scarcity. Nowadays, the low-pressure sprinkler has been widely used to replace highpressure impact sprinklers in linear-move sprinkler irrigation systems due to its low operating cost and high efficiency. However, the hazard of increased surface runoff represents the biggest obstacle for low-pressure sprinkler systems. Variable-rate irrigation (VRI) techniques have been used

The popularity of variable-rate technology (VRT) has grown. However, the limitations and errors ofthis technology are generally unknown. Therefore, a spatial data model was developed to generate "asapplied"surfaces to advance precision agricultural (PA) practices. A test methodology based on ASAEStandard S341.2 was developed to perform uniform-rate (UR) and variable-rate (VR) tests to characterizedistribution patterns testing four VRT granular applicators (two spinner spreaders and two pneumaticapplicators). Single-pass UR patterns exhibited consistent shapes for three of the applicators with

The deployment of third generation (3G) cellular systems is resulting in a transition from cellular systems that predominantly carry constant-bit-rate (CBR) voice traffic to multi-service packet based systems that predominantly carry variable-bit-rate (VBR) traffic. With 3G DS-CDMA cellular systems there is a direct relationship between user traffic and propagation dependent performance as additional traffic causes increased system interference. This thesis investigates the impact of VBR traffic on the propagation dependent performance of DS-CDMA cellular systems that utilise frame-by-frame dy

The world population is projected to rise, and there is a growing concern of future food availability. Precision agriculture technologies are one solution to this problem as they aim to produce more food on less land. This study examines the adoption and intensity of precision agriculture technology usage by producers in North Dakota. Data from a North Dakota State University survey was collected and analyzed using an econometric double-hurdle model. The stepwise regression suggested that the soil EC, horizontal co-planar geometry (HCP), inorganic nitrogen and moisture content were major yield influencing factors.
