Abstract:
This book relies on maximum likelihood (ML) estimation of parameters. Asymptotic theory assumes regularity conditions hold when the ML estimator is consistent. Typically an additional third derivative condition is assumed to ensure that the ML estimator is also asymptotically normally distributed. Standard asymptotic results that then hold are summarized in this chapter; for example, the asymptotic variance of the ML estimator is then given by the Fisher information formula, and the log-likelihood ratio, the Wald and the score statistics for testing the statistical significance of parameter estimates are all asymptotically equivalent. Also, the useful profile log-likelihood then behaves exactly as a standard log-likelihood only in a parameter space of just one dimension. Further, the model can be reparametrized to make it locally orthogonal in the neighbourhood of the true parameter value. The large exponential family of models is briefly reviewed where a unified set of regular conditions can be obtained.

Abstract:
Mass spectrometers have become routine laboratory instruments in many disciplines. ‘Measuring isotopes: mass spectrometers’ concentrates on those used to quantify the abundance of different isotopes—gas source isotope ratio, thermal ionization, inductively coupled plasma, and secondary ion mass spectrometers. A mass spectrometer can be used to quantify the concentration of a particular element by monitoring an isotope of that element not overlapped by isotopes of other elements. All mass spectrometers have three essential components: an ion source, a mass filter, and a detector. There are two main types of detector: Faraday detectors measure large signals and a variant of photomultiplier tubes measures small isotope signals.

Full text
Abstract:
The preprint presents the economic mechanism of investment programs and analyzes its components: specific indicators for evaluating the investment part of developmental programs are proposed; a specific pricing for products manufactured as a result of the implementation of investment projects; a system of financing developmental programs based on the optimal ratio of budget funds, reinvested profits and credit. The empirical base of the study is made up of materials from the petrochemical complex. In this regard, the world trends in the development of petrochemical chemistry and the situation in the petrochemical complex of Russia are considered. Recommendations are given regarding the development of the petrochemical industry of Russia. A multi-criteria optimization model that implements the presented economic mechanism and is intended to form variants of the structure of the governmental program for industrial and regional (territorial) development is developed. The results of a computer experiment are presented. Variants of a conditional program for the development of the Russian oil and gas chemical complex showing the positive impact of the proposed economic mechanism on the structure and indicators of the program are developed.

Levy, David. Management of microvascular and associated complications. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780198766452.003.0007.

Full text
Abstract:
While end-stage microvascular complications are now relatively uncommon, the burden of microvascular disease is still heavy. National diabetic retinopathy screening programmes have contributed to reducing advanced retinal disease, as has improved laser technology and vitreoretinal surgery. More recently intravitreal anti-VEGF agents (bevacizumab, ranibizumab, and aflibercept) have been effective in reducing visual loss from macular oedema. Diabetic nephropathy has a variable phenotype, and high rates of natural regression from microalbuminuria to normoalbuminuria mandate careful and regular review with regular urinary albumin-creatinine ratio (ACR) measurements. Up to one-quarter of patients with renal impairment have never had microalbuminuria. Long-term glycaemic control is the most important treatment for early diabetic nephropathy; angiotensin blockade treatment (ACE-inhibitors, angiotensin receptor blockers) are less important. In established diabetic nephropathy, intensive multimodal treatment is needed. Neuropathic complications are usually plantar ulceration, Charcot neuroarthropathy, and autonomic, especially gastroparesis and erectile dysfunction.

Matthew Kynes, J. Hemophilia (Presentation in Emergency Surgery). Edited by Matthew D. McEvoy and Cory M. Furse. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780190226459.003.0085.

Full text
Abstract:
Hemophilia is a complex disease of variable severity that affects clotting function and has significant implications in perioperative and emergency care. Hereditary or de novo mutations cause deficiencies in factor VIII or IX production, which may manifest as spontaneous bleeding into joint spaces, muscles, or other sites in severe forms of the disease. Intracranial bleeding is one of the most serious and often fatal complications. In a patient with abnormal bleeding, laboratory results indicative of hemophilia include an increased partial prothromboplastin time (PT), with normal prothrombin time/international normalized ratio (PTT/INR) and normal platelet count. The diagnosis is confirmed with specific factor assays. Advances in prophylaxis with factor replacement have improved outcomes and reduced bleeding episodes in hemophilia. However, patients with hemophilia may present emergently for operation and require factor replacement. In patients that have developed antibodies to factor replacement, clotting factor bypass agents may be required to control bleeding.

Gazzarrini, Denise, and Giulio Perugi. Gender and Body Dysmorphic Disorder. Edited by Katharine A. Phillips. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780190254131.003.0015.

Full text
Abstract:
Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) in females and males appears to have more similarities than differences; however, gender-related factors appear to influence some aspects of BDD’s clinical expression and prevalence. In epidemiologic studies, BDD is slightly more common in females than in males, but in clinical samples and samples of convenience, the gender ratio is more variable. Gender seems to influence some specific body parts of concern (e.g., men are more likely to be concerned about their genitals, women their breasts and legs). Women appear more likely than men to use certain camouflaging techniques and to pick their skin in response to skin concerns. Differences in comorbidity have also been reported, with substance use disorders more common in males and eating disorders more common in females. Men and women are equally likely to seek cosmetic treatment for BDD, which differs from the general population, but women are more likely to receive it. The possible influence of gender on treatment response deserves further research.

Ellam, Rob. Isotopes. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/actrade/9780198723622.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
An isotope is a variant form of a chemical element, containing a different number of neutrons in its nucleus. Most elements exist as several isotopes. Many are stable, others are radioactive, and some may only exist fleetingly before decaying into other elements. The study of isotope ratios has become central to many areas of science, and used to probe the age and history of the Earth and the origins of the Solar System. Radioactive isotopes find wide applications, from nuclear power to medicine and carbon dating. Isotopes: A Very Short Introduction provides an overview of the nature of stable and radioactive isotopes, considering their wide range of modern applications.

Garner, Bryan A. Garner’s Modern English Usage. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/acref/9780190491482.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Over 6000 entriesWith more than a thousand new entries and more than 2,300 word-frequency ratios, the magisterial fourth edition ofGarner’s Modern English Usagereflects usage lexicography at its finest. It delights while providing instruction on skillful, persuasive, and vivid writing. Garner liberates English from two extremes: both from the hidebound “purists” who mistakenly believe that split infinitives and sentence-ending prepositions are malfeasances and from the linguistic relativists who believe that whatever people say or write must necessarily be accepted. The judgments here are backed up not just by a lifetime of study but also by an empirical grounding in the largest linguistic corpus ever available. In this fourth edition, Garner has made extensive use of corpus linguistics to include ratios of standard terms as compared against variants in modern print sources. No other resource provides as comprehensive, reliable, and empirical a guide to current English usage. For all concerned with writing and editing,Garner’s Modern English Usagewill prove invaluable as a desk reference. Garner illustrates with actual examples, cited with chapter and verse, all the linguistic blunders that modern writers and speakers are prone to, whether in word choice, syntax, phrasing, punctuation, or pronunciation. This is the liveliest and most compulsively readable reference work for writers of our time.

Abstract:
It has long been known that the human genome is subject to deletion and duplication of genetic material by various molecular mechanisms. Until recently, such events were assumed to be relatively rare phenomena. It is now known that submicroscopic deletions or duplications calledcopy number variants(CNVs) are a major source of genomic variation. Rare CNVs (defined as occurring in less than 1 percent of the population) have been implicated in schizophrenia and autism. Measured in terms of odds ratios, individual CNVs have been shown to have large effects, some increasing the risk of disorder several-fold. But they are incompletely penetrant, no one CNV is either necessary or sufficient to cause the disorder. The findings are less clear-cut with bipolar disorder but, here, too, rare CNVs probably play a role. In unipolar depression, initial evidence suggests an overall increase in rare CNVs that disrupt exons, the coding regions of genes.

Marvin, Carolyn. When Old Technologies Were New. Oxford University Press, 1990. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780195063417.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
In the history of electronic communication, the last quarter of the nineteenth century holds a special place, for it was during this period that the telephone, phonograph, electric light, wireless, and cinema were all invented. In When old Technologies Were New, Carolyn Marvin explores how two of these new inventions--the telephone and the electric light--were publicly envisioned at the end of the nineteenth century, as seen in specialized engineering journals and popular media. Marvin pays particular attention to the telephone, describing how it disrupted established social relations, unsettling customary ways of dividing the private person and family from the more public setting of the community. On the lighter side, she describes how people spoke louder when calling long distance, and how they worried about catching contagious diseases over the phone. A particularly powerful chapter deals with telephonic precursors of radio broadcasting--the "Telephone Herald" in New York and the "Telefon Hirmondo" of Hungary--and the conflict between the technological development of broadcasting and the attempt to impose a homogenous, ethnocentric variant of Anglo-Saxon culture on the public. While focusing on the way professionals in the electronics field tried to control the new media, Marvin also illuminates the broader social impact, presenting a wide-ranging, informative, and entertaining account of the early years of electronic media.
