Full textIn the nanometer era, the physical verification of CMOS digital circuit becomes a complex task. Designers must account of numerous new factors that impose a drastic change in validation and physical verification methods. One of these major changes in timing verification to handle process variation lies in the progressive development of statistical timing engine. However the statistical approach cannot capture accurately the deterministic variations of both the voltage and temperature variations. Therefore our work proposes a novel method, based on non-linear derating coefficients, to account of these environmental variations. This method allows computing the delay of logical paths considering specifics conditions of each cell. The combined use of reduced supply voltage with high threshold voltage values may reverse the temperature dependence of designs, the worst case timing conditions becomes less predictable and can occur at different temperatures. This effect, called temperature inversion phenomenon is particularly critical for low power applications. The characterization, at each level (from device to critical paths) allowed us to define some techniques to take into account this effect into the design flow

Full textThis Ph. D. Thesis is focused on the energy supply of communicating electronic microsystems. The ultimate goal is to make them autonomous by harvesting energy coming from the ambiant environment. In particular, we explored a scavenging way based on temporal variations of temperature. Those variations are, by nature, slow (some degrees during several hours) which excludes nearly all "classical" solutions. To solve this problem, we developped a new approach, coupling magnetic and piezoelectric materials. This hybridization is able to overcome the temporal dependance and to generate peaks of energy of several tens of μW when crossing some thermal thresholds. To conclude this work, we turn our attention to the global simulation of this phenomena under Simulink

Full textThis experimental thesis focuses on the energy harvesting for micro-generators and au- tonomy of electronic devices with low consumption. This work proposes the possibilities of har- vesting thermal energy by pyroelectric effect. The thermal energy to be converted is thermal fluc- tuations. We proposed two main techniques to generate electricity by pyroelectric ceramic. The first one focuses on the harvesting of infrared radiation associated with the SSHI technique. Ori- ginally, the SSHI technique was developed in the case of the piezoelectric energy harvesting, but we applied it in the case of pyroelectricity and which allowed us to maximize the harvested power by a factor of 2. The second proposed technique concerns the harvesting of thermal fluctuations resulting from convective movements originating inside a fluid in the Rayleigh-Bernard configu- ration. We have carried out several studies to increase the convective transfer in order to improve the pyroelectricresponse and maximize the harvested power. In the case of natural convection, the choice of a suitable fluid and the optimization of the control parameters of the Rayleigh-Bernard configuration are essential steps in order to achieve better heat transfer by convection. In the case of forced convection, it has been studied the advantage of dispersing copper nanoparticles in a pure fluid to increase the convective transfer. With this nanofluid, the pyroelectric response was maximized by a factor of 10

Full textThis thesis presents a method to model air temperature differences within a conurbation . It relies on the analysis of the existing relationships between urban microclimate, geographical context and weather conditions. To do so, five air temperature networks located in three western France conurbations are utilized : Nantes, Angers and La Roche sur-Yon. A state of the art of the methods used to analyze urban climate is realized in chapter 1. In Chapter 2, air temperature networks are presented and analyzed and a methodology to correct biased data is proposed. In Chapter3 air temperature differences observed between the network sites are modelled from multiple linear regressions, using weather variables such as wind speed or solar radiation as explicative variables. Before the calibration step, data is sorted in a variety of ways in order to elaborate several models. The most performant model is identified in chapter4, confronting data observed using the five temperature networks to data estimated from each of the models.Chapter 5 illustrates the results of the work through three practical applications

Full textThe atmospheric water vapor is an important component of the hydrologic cycle. As greenhouse gas it has dominant effects on climate and global warming. Its distribution is highly variable at global and temporal scales and its mechanisms still poorly understood. This thesis deals with one hand on the study of total column water vapor over the Observatoire de Haute Provence (OHP) in Southern France, measured with instruments SAOZ and Elodie from the ground, and with instruments on satellites, GOME, and GOME2 SCHIAMACHY, and the other hand on the Mediterranean coastal region using data from the same satellites. Analysis of these data available from 1995 to 2009 allowed their validation and interpretation of field variability of water vapor incorporating the mechanisms of geographical distribution across the OHP, and their seasonal variations and their long-term trends over the OHP and the Mediterranean

Full textIn this thesis, an important oceanographic variable for the monitoring of the climate is studied: the sea surface temperature. At the global level, this variable is observed along the ocean by several remote sensed sources. In order to treat all this information, statistical methods are used to summarize our variable of interest in global daily map. For that purpose, a state-space linear model with Gaussian error is suggested. We begin to introduce this model on data resulting from having an irregular sampling. Then, we work on the estimation of the parameters. This is based on the combination of the method of moments and the maximum likelihood estimates, with the study of the EM algorithm and the Kalman recursions. Finally, this methodology is applied to estimate the variance of errors and the temporal correlation parameter to the Atlantic ocean. We add the spatial component and propose a separable second order structure, based on the product of a temporal covariance and a spatial anisotropic covariance. According to usual geostatistical methods, the parameters of this covariance are estimated on the Atlantic ocean and form a relevant atlas for the oceanographers. Finally, we show that the contribution of the spatial information increases the predictive behaviour of the model

Full textNowadays, the enegy consumption and the heat dissipation of computing environments have emerged as crucial issues. Indeed, large data centers consume as muse electricity as a city while modern processors attain high temperatures degrading their performance and decreasing their reliability.. In this thesis, we study various energy and temperature aware scheduling problems and we focus on their complexity and approximability. A dominant technique for saving energy is by prosper scheduling of the jobs through the operating system combined with appropriate scaling of the processor's speed. This technique is referred to as speed scaling in the literature and its theoretical study was initiated by Yao, Demers and Shenker (FOCS'1995). In order to manage the thermal behavior of a computing device, we adaopt the approach of Chrobak, Dürr, Hurand and Robert (AAIM'2008). The main assumption is that some jobs are more CPU intensive than others and more heat is generated during their execution. Moreover, the cooling of a computing device occurs by introducing appropriate idle periods
