Abstract:
This chapter considers some of the issues that make it difficult to establish a working definition of play—and in consequence conducting research on the topic. Play scholars and advocates offer accounts of play that correspond to their distinctive circumstances and interests. Arguably, this diversity of viewpoint should be taken as a challenge to play scholars to explain why the different play theories have developed each in their own way. The chapter first cites some examples of behavior that most people might consider play or “almost play.” It then examines six different ways of thinking abo

Abstract:
By confronting the singularity of the relationship between two exemplary writers of the last century, this book challenges and reinvigorates our notions of what art and criticism – literary or otherwise – can do. While it takes Roland Barthes’s encounters with Marcel Proust’s monumental masterpiece À la recherche du temps perdu as its specific focus, the implications of its argument are far-reaching. Indeed, the book argues that Barthes’s writing on Proust’s work between the early 1950s and 1980 (including a substantial set of unpublished notes for a seminar delivered at the University of Raba

Chapter 2 reveals that teachers’ expectations for student problem-solving are not consistent. Instead, those expectations vary from activity to activity and even from moment to moment, and those variations have real implications for inequalities. There were times when teachers wanted students to acknowledge their struggles and proactively seek support (favoring middle-class strategies of influence), but there were also times when teachers wanted students to work through difficult problems on their own, times when they did not want to give extra credit or extra time, and times when they wanted

This chapter provides examples of the ways in which victimization surveys have been used in environmental criminology to identify spatial distributions of crime and to test and refine hypotheses that speak to these distributions. It first makes some initial remarks on the variations in victimization surveys, which clearly affect what can be concluded from them with what confidence about differing forms of spatial contribution. It then provides three examples showing how national victimization surveys have been used to develop, test, and refine hypotheses drawn from environmental criminology th

This chapter discusses the scholarly treatment of the term biopolitics from the mid-1970s to the present, and it describes how feminist theorists have influenced and also departed from this treatment. In the process, it addresses two questions. The first is how feminist theorists have redefined biopolitics as an affirmative or at least value-neutral concept that can help scholars come to terms with recent technological and environmental variations on democratic engagement. The second is how, having reconceived biopolitics in this way, feminist theorists have developed new approaches to classic

This chapter covers the economic fundamentals of commodity markets (i.e., what shapes the evolution of the price of raw materials) in three steps. First, it covers the theories explaining why the futures curve can be upward or downward sloping, an essential element for commodity producing companies. The evolution of inventories and hedging pressures are the two dominant sources of explanation. Second, the chapter reviews the fundamentals of commodity spot prices: technologies, supply, demand, and speculation. Production costs draw the long-term evolution of prices, but demand and supply shocks

Major features of tetrapod sensory structures are well developed in fish which also have lateral lines, and some have electroreceptors and possibly magnetoreceptors. Receptors may be categorized according to the type of stimulus to which they respond: photoreceptors, chemoreceptors, mechanoreceptors, temperature receptors and nociceptors. Adaptations to aquatic habitats are described for examples from each category. Each type of receptor has the capacity to transduce (transform) its specific sensory stimulus into receptor potentials which initiate or modulate activity in sensory neurons to the

The parish database shows major variations in trends and timings of population changes in less urbanized areas of Scotland. Even within parishes, people increasingly concentrated into larger villages and towns at the expense of more remote areas. The critical minimum size for settlements increased over time, but depended on distance from other larger places and on whether a locality became more than just a centre for agricultural activity. Mining and factory industry were key sources of growth even in many rural areas but caused major legacy problems as they collapsed. Fishing and its related

The etiology of kidney cancer remains largely unknown. Cigarette smoking, obesity, and hypertension are well-established risk factors for kidney cancer. Although the current evidence is relatively mixed, other emerging risk factors include use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), occupational exposure to trichloroethylene, and high parity in women. In contrast, physical activity and alcohol consumption have been consistently inversely associated with risk of kidney cancer. There is no convincing evidence of a causal link with any other specific food items or nutrients. Most kidney
