The form of the second movement of the String Quartet in A major, Op. 7 is original not only in Dohnányi’s oeuvre but in music history in general, as well. This new musical idea is a fusion of two traditional forms: a variation and a ternary form. The theme of the movement is followed by four variations, but at the end of the second one there is an unexpected break: a contrasting Trio-like section comes in between and the flow of variations continues only after it finishes. This unique structure is analysed in detail for the first time in present study. Relying on analyses of Dohnányi’s compos

Max Reger was a prolific composer on the threshold of modernism. The style of his extensive musical output was polarizing among his contemporaries. A criticism of Reger's music is its complex and dense musical structure. Despite writing tonal music, Reger often pushes the boundaries of tonality so far that all sense of formal organization is seemingly imperceptible. In this dissertation, I offer what I observed to be a new way of discerning Reger's motivic relationships and formal structures within and between movements. Abstract It was no doubt partly in emulation of his teacher Haydn and partly as a means of emphasizing that his powers as a composer of concerted chamber music at least equalled his skill as a pianist and improviser, that Beethoven specially cultivated the piano trio in Vienna during the 1790s, eventually issuing three examples as his Opus I. But equally it is clear that, with the publication of these works, Beethoven sought to fulfil an ambition which he had nursed since his earliest days in Bonn. It was there, in 1785, at the age of 14, that he produced his three early piano quartets, remark

Abstract Chapter 3 considers how Schumann sought to renew the expressive power of inner-movement forms, using as examples the scherzo-trio drawn from the A-minor string quartet, and the variation-based slow movement from the F-major string quartet. These two forms are the most predictable of classical models, involving exact or varied levels of repetition. Schumann, however, reimagines the repetition concept and in ways that yield unusual nested forms. In the scherzo movement, such a form arises through an unusual interplay between fantastic and sacred associations. The chapter investigates va

Dr Busch gives it in Mozart’s original scoring-for strings without violas, and with a flute and bassoon taking turns to double each phrase of the melody, varying the repeats with displays of their flea-like agility.
