Abstract:
ABSTRACTThe debate about the political allegiance of Pius XII and the Vatican during the Second World War remains unresolved. As more documents become available, they enable historians, detractors and defenders alike, to develop a more nuanced view on this contentious issue. Files recently released by The National Archives1 come within this category. They reveal that during the Second World War the British government systematically intercepted, monitored, and recorded in detail the financial transactions listed in the bank statements of the main financial agencies of the State of Vatican City from 1941 to 1943. These documents provide a detailed, if occasionally incomplete, day by day and month by month record of the Vatican's sources of income, expenditure priorities, investment strategies, and movements of money throughout its global network under the difficult wartime conditions of foreign exchange controls, blocked sterling and dollar accounts, Freezing Orders, and Trading with the Enemy restrictions imposed by the belligerent parties. This article examines the light they shed on Vatican finances throughout that period and what new insights they provide into the role of Pius XII and the Vatican during the Second World War, and, in particular, into the question of where their sympathies lay throughout the duration of that conflict.

Abstract:
The author of polish origin, sets the political determinants of Moldovan Csango identity in a historical perspective. Her study’s outcome is based on her documentation work made in the Vatican Secret Archives (Archivio Segreto Vaticano) as well as at the Saint Congregation for Evangelization (Archivio Storico della Congregazione per l”Evanghelizazzione dei Popoli), till now a missing body of documents within csango studies. In her paper the author focuses on the political forces that affected identity change among the Csangos, embracing the period from 1860 to 1916. The insightful conclusion of the study unravells a Vatican who’s worries for it’s own influence in an orthodox country like Romania, though aware of its subjects true needs, make it accept conditions set by the Romanian Government, and with it’s own catholicism-disseminating actions finally contributed to the linguistic, religious and cultural „meeting process” of both the Csango and Romanian population

This article examines the contribution made by the publishing house of Herder to the reception of the teaching and decisions of Vatican II (1962–1965). This input began with the five volumes of Commentary on the Documents of Vatican II (German original 1966–1968), edited by Herbert Vorgrimler and including contributions from twenty-one authors who had played roles in drafting the Council’s sixteen documents and could expound from the inside the authorial intentions ( intentio auctoris) of these texts. The subsequent five volumes of the Herders Theologischer Kommentar (2004–2009), edited by Peter Hünermann, could also explore the post-Vatican II history of interpretation and implementation of the conciliar texts (the intentio textus) and the insights of readers with their different questions and expectations (the intentio legentis).

Abstract:
ABSTRACTThis article engages the on-going debate over the interpretation of Vatican II's documents. It argues that a careful examination of this dispute reveals that it is not primarily concerned with the existence of “rupture” or “continuity” in the council's texts, but instead is driven by fundamental questions regarding the nature of reception and the character of ecclesial authority. The article outlines the distinctive notions of reception operative in the debate over Vatican II and the way in which such views shape their proponents' hermeneutics of interpretation. To that end, it illumines a determinative link between larger paradigms of ecclesiological structure and related approaches to reception. The final section explores Vatican II's own documents for the ways that they address the authentic nature of reception and the character of legitimate authority. Ultimately, this study argues that Vatican II's affirmation of a dynamic notion of reception points a way forward for its own interpretation and, more broadly, for advancing the Church's overall self-understanding.

The materials and spirit of the Second Vatican Council have largely outstripped the comprehension of the extremely important religious, social, economic, and spiritual problems faced by the modern globalized world. This concerns in many respects the problems of labor, the understanding of the value-motivational factors of attitude towards it. Moreover, the attitude to work has its own social, economic, spiritual and, of course, religious studies. All this can not but correct the problem of attitude to work as a Christian phenomenon in the documents of the Second Vatican Council. In this regard, the very fact that in our time the socio-philosophical science is not sufficiently adapted to the Ukrainian needs and realities of the idea of the II Vatican Council of the Catholic Church (1962-1965) and the council documents of this Church

Abstract: With the support of documents from the Congregation for a Catholic Education and of a letter from the Secretariat of the Vatican State, the Author analyses the reasons why “it is not possible to admit into the seminary and in the sacred orders those who practice homosexuality, present deeply rooted homosexual tendencies or support the so-called gay culture”. It shows that homosexuality – as described in the above mentioned documents – represents an objective obstacle for the ordination that originates in the very nature of priesthood: besides hindering the pastoral action it raises the question of the most appropriate way for the presbyter to establish relations both with men and with women.

Abstract:
Cristologia. Igreja. História da salvação. Vaticano II.Abstracts: This Essay aims to present the way the Vatican II Council rediscover Eschatology. A process that was going on since the of the nineteenth century up to the twentieth century as the investigations about the historical Jesus began. This ongoing process reaches the fifties and the sixties of the twentieth Century inspired both by the Hope-Principle of E. Bloch and Moltmann’s Theology of Hope. There is a new understanding of eschatology that moves from Dogmatics’ last treatise to a transcendental dimension that touches the whole of the Christian theology on its very foundations. In this way, we leave behind theology’s classical paradigm based on an essentialist philosophy to a new one reflecting of a philosophy of Human Existence. This change in perspective meets the demands of a new understanding of man in modernity. In our view the Vatican II Council assimilates in its main documents this new perspective as we find for example in the Lumen Gentium cap. VII, where it deals with the eschatological nature of the Pilgrim Church and its union with the Celestial Church. Keywords: Eschatology. Christology. Church. The History of Salvation. Vatican II.

Abstract:

Abstract : This work approaches the theme of clergy formation by looking at the terms ¿formation¿ and ¿clergy,¿ which are subjects that cannot be dissociated from each other. In order to comprehend the purpose of the current process of clergy formation, this work seeks to understand who the priest is, his identity, the historical comprehension of priestly identity, and the profile of the men seeking to enter the so-called ¿clergy-career.¿ Through the lens of sociology, history, and education, the present work researches the clergy formation in three stages: First, from the Council of Trent (1545-1563) to the middle of the 20th century; second, approaching the experience of small formative communities, during the brief period near the II Vatican Council (1962-1965); third, making an analysis on the formation of clergy in the post-Vatican II period, especially during the pontificate of pope John Paul II (1978- 2005). This work is divided in three chapters that approach clergy formation and Seminaries in their historical comprehension, having as reference the thoughts of Michel Foucault in his work, ¿Vigiar e Punir,¿ of Erving Goffman in, ¿Manicômios, Prisões e Conventos,¿ and of the Theologian João Batista Libânio, in his work, ¿A Volta à Grande Disciplina.¿ The first chapter, entitled, ¿A persistent model,¿ draws a path through history to comprehend the clergy identity of the Priest built by the council of Trent. The second chapter, ¿A struggling model,¿ makes an analysis of the attempt to overcome the Tridentine identity regarding Clergy formation, achieved by the II Vatican Council, pointing to a renewal of ecclesiology and church structures. As a concrete case, the chapter will discuss on the trajectory of clergy formation in the Archdiocese of Campinas, unfolding the history of the seminaries in that particular church and the application of the Church documents, guidelines, and Councils. The third chapter, ¿The Old in the New,¿ describes the unfolding of that renewal of ecclesiology proposed by Vatican II, which requires a new model of clergy against the new realities of the current world, and postmodern era, according to the positions taken during the pontificate of John Paul II, departing from his Post-Synodal Apostolic Exhortation Pastoris Dabo Vobis (1992)

Abstract:
The religious surveys made after the Second World War stress the dynamism of the Diocese of Annecy. However this matter has not been examined until now. That is why it seems interesting to study its evolution between the separation of Church and State (1905) and Council Vatican II (1962) using a monographic approach. The enforcement of the Law of " Separation" raised some problems but also gave the opportunity to stress " The Blue Catholicism " of the diocese. As a consequence, Laymen appeared on the Front of the Stage, inducing the rising of Catholic movements which grew throughout this period inspire of the two World Wars. This helped to maintain the dynamism of the Diocese thought the part played by the bishops and the clergy must not be forgotten. However, inspire of the impulse, we can notice a tension between catholic movements and political stakes. Between 1939 and 1945, we must remember the part played by several priests who helped the French Resistance movement. Numerous laymen joined The " Army of the Shadows " and some priests suspected of being collaborationists were murdered. Throughout this period, the efforts made from the beginning of the study, allowed the diocese not to know too quickly the Crisis of priesthood related with calls to the Church. After the war, these were the main concerts as well as religious schools and the news forms of the Pastoral concomitant with sociological surveys and local missions which gives us a photography of the diocese on the eve of the Council

Barth, Sylvie. Thesis, Strasbourg, 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017STRAK001/document.

Full text
Abstract:
Based on the partners’ choice for each other, their loving commitment and desire to start a family, the couple relationship, whether in formal marriage or not, has become for many of our contemporaries a real locus spiritualis, the seat and source of a spirituality. How to understand, from a Christian point of view, this new paradigm and foster it while the concepts associated with it are continuously evolving? Spirituality in Occidental history has a diverse and layered heritage: Greco-Roman dualism; a strong focus on the ‘sin of the flesh’; a modern quest for self-realisation and authenticity; and, although less known, an understanding of spirituality since Vatican II which is strongly incarnational, community-oriented and Trinitarian.Shaping a model of conjugal life in between intimate love and institutional marriage, couples in the 1930’s start referring to a Catholic “marital spirituality” which will be fully acknowledged only by Gaudium et Spes. Later generations will realize that spirituality, understood in a broad sense, helps couples to become resilient – an insight which will be at the basis of multi-disciplinary research. But how to conceive in today’s pluralistic society of a spirituality of couple life, or ‘co-elective spirituality’, that at the same time enhances the flourishing of contemporary couples and yet does not forsake its Christian frame of reference? The universal “law of giving” and the concepts of “promise” and “covenant” which equip for a “shared intimacy” appear to be central concepts which both help to shape the communion of ‘elective couples’ and lend themselves to be lived in a specifically Christian way. Here a pneumatology takes shape which is to be understood as a “circulation of gifts”. Helping fruitful love to flourish thus contributes not only to humanizing society but also to raise awareness for global challenges

Abstract:
This chapter discusses the ways in which the documents decreed by the Second Vatican Council stimulated theological writing in Scotland and created a climate for their implementation in the Catholic Church up to the first decade of this millennium. It looks at the theological impact of academic Scottish Catholic theologians and at the theological documents of the Bishops’ Conference of Scotland, including the statement on the morality of nuclear arms and the two teaching documents produced in collaboration with the Bishops’ Conferences of England and Wales and of Ireland—One Bread, One Body, and The Gift of Scripture. It also shows how the theology of the Council documents has influenced the areas of religious education, lay ministry, and collaborative leadership, and has led to closer cooperation with other churches and academic institutions. Finally, it laments that there is no longer a locus for seminary education in Scotland.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the material in four of the volumes published in the Actes et documents du Saint Siège relatifs à la seconde guerre mondiale. The main concern of this chapter is to examine how the Vatican responded to the predicament of the Jews (and also the Poles) during the Holocaust era. It begins with volume vi because this covers efforts of the Holy See to help victims of the war (especially baptized Jews) in the period between March 1939 and December 1940. The two parts of volume iii that concern Poland (in effect two separately published volumes on the same theme but chronologically divided) are treated next, since they deal predominantly with the relationship between the Vatican and the Poles. Finally, the chapter examines the letters of Pope Pius XII to the German bishops between 1939 and 1944, which are fundamentally different in character from the ‘normal’ documentation of the Vatican Secretariat of State.

Abstract:
This chapter shows that the Synod of Pistoia was a “ghost” on the council floor; that is, a key moment in the Church’s collective memory that influenced the drafting of texts and the subsequent debate over them. The first section briefly traces the legacy of Auctorem fidei and the Pistorienses from the death of Ricci (1810) to the eve of Vatican II. In the increasingly ultramontane nineteenth-century, the memory of the infamous Pistoians was evoked in a range of ecclesial documents. Auctorem fidei was firmly established as a bulwark of ultramontane thought. The second section surveys the many contexts in which Auctorem fidei was cited in Vatican II draft documents. The third section thoroughly analyses six evocations of Auctorem fidei during the debate on episcopal collegiality. These evocations constitute the most detailed discussion of an eighteenth-century doctrinal document at the Council, and prove that Pistoia was a “ghost” in the Aula.

Abstract:
This brief overview sheds light on certain aspects of Benedict XV’s pontificate: the conditions of dioceses and the bishops’ pastoral governance; the monitoring of religious practices and the particular needs of specific regions and nations; and the supervision of disciplinary matters regarding preaching and the clergy’s participation in politics or social life (i.e. dancing parties or membership at associations such as the Knights of Columbus). Through a review of primary sources, this contribution demonstrates a growing attention toward the non-European world manifested by the Church’s concern for emigrants as well as through an interest in Protestant proselytism. Furthermore, specific records indicate a gradual process of modernization taking place within the Church: for example, the projection of films in churches or the clergy’s use of modern means of transportation.

Abstract:
Historical research report on the external architectural surfaces of the fortress of San LeoThe hinterland of Rimini is characterized by the presence of many castles, but the fortress of San Leo is certainly the most representative because of its position and the different constructive contributions that over time have updated its appearance and military functions. Cited by Dante and Machiavelli for the impervious nature on which it stands, its origin dates back to the early Middle Ages. It was rehashed following the imprint of Francesco di Giorgio Martini in the fifteenth century, restored by Giuseppe Valadier at the end of the eighteenth century and converted to a prison in 1631. A peculiarity that makes the studies on the fortress of San Leo absolutely interesting is the treatment of the external architectural surfaces of which there is ample documentation in the historical archives and of which there are multiple uses in the various areas of the factory; the research aims to offer useful knowledge for the subsequent conservation and restoration project. The theme, completely original, arises from indirect investigations of a documentary and iconographic nature, conducted at the State Archives of Pesaro, Florence, Rome, the Central State Archive and the Vatican Secret Archive, which repeatedly refer in the accounting of works, starting from the seventeenth century, the execution of plasters executed outside the monument. The interpretative tension of the archival documents and the drawings continued by looking for a direct comparison between historical information and materiality of the fortress, in order to identify a correspondence between historical data and constructive reality. It emerges clearly that the external surfaces of many parts of the fortress were treated and finished with plaster since its origins, probably due to the exposure to atmospheric agents; therefore a rethinking of what is reported in the literature is necessary both in terms of interpretative profile of the fortress, and about how its image was perceived over the centuries.
