Abstract:
This paper presents the design and the measurement results of a novel Voltage Controlled DelayLine (VCDL) dedicated to an original architecture of Delay Locked Loop (DLL): the Factorial DelayLocked Loop (F-DLL). Based on the multiphase ring oscillator technique, the proposed VCDL offers, among others, two outputs in phase quadrature. These last ones allow the F-DLL to be zero-IF compliantand becomes a good candidate for multi-standard local oscillator. The proposed circuit hasbeen fabricated in a 130nm CMOS-SOI technology from STMicroelectronics. Measurement resultsconfirm the low quadrature phase error of the topology (inferior to 5°) and the ability of the F-DLL tosynthesize the [0.9-4] GHz band, being suited for GSM up to WIMAX applications, while offering veryinteresting performances in term of phase noise and settling time.

Abstract:
Delay locked loop is a critical building block of high speed synchronous circuits. An improved architecture of amixed signaldelay locked loop (DLL) is presented here. In this DLL, delay cell based on single ended differential pair configuration is used for voltage controlled delay line (VCDL) implementation. This delay cell provides a high locking range with less phase noise and jitter due to differential pair configuration. For increasing the acquisition range and locking speed of the DLL, modified true single phase clock (TSPC) based phase frequency detector is used. The proposed design is implemented at 0.18 <em>um </em>CMOS technology and at power supply of 1.8<em>V </em>. It has power consumption of 1.39 <em>mW </em>at 125 <em>MHz</em> center frequency with locking range from 0.5 <em>MHz</em> to 250 <em>MHz.</em>

Abstract:
A clock generator with an edge-combiner DLL (ECDLL) has been developed for USB 2.0 applications. The clock generator generates 480 MHz 10-tap output signals from a 12 MHz reference signal and consists of three DLLs to shrink the design area so that it is smaller than a conventional one based on a PLL. Each DLL is applied to our proposed shot pulse reset technique to prevent from a harmonic lock and is applied to a voltage-controlled delay line (VCDL) with a trimming function to operate against any process voltage temperature (PVT) variations. A 90 nm CMOS process was used to fabricate our proposed clock generator. The 480 MHz 10-tap output signals satisfy the USB 2.0 specifications. A power consumption is less than 1.3 mW and a locking time is less than 3.5 μs, which are far less than a conventional one, 10.0 μs. The design area is200×225 μm, which is half that of the conventional one.

Abstract:
This paper presents the design and simulation results for a Federal Communication Committee (FCC) complaint current starved delay line based Ultra Wide Band (UWB) Gaussian pulse transmitter, which is designed for operating in the 3.1–10.6 GHz range. The wavelet is a mono cycle Gaussian impulse wave, which is practically well suited for low cost, low power, low data rate wireless data transfer such as in wireless body area network (WBAN) applications. The transmitter operating frequency and bandwidth (BW) is controlled using a dc voltage provided at the input stage of a voltage controlled delay line (VCDL) and this aspect can be exploited for increasing the communication coverage area without compromising on the power consumption. A Gaussian wave shaping is performed for FCC compliance and the simulation has been carried out with 130 nm technology. The simulation of our design suggests an average dynamic power consumption of 1.11 mw for an energy efficiency of 14.2 pJ/pulse. The proposed IR-UWB transmitter design though a bit inferior in terms of the power efficiency, can claim superior performance with respect to tuning the BW, which is very relevant in a cognitive wireless networking scenario with other interfering signals.

Abstract:
Vascular closure devices (VCDs) reduce the time to haemostasis and ambulation and improve patient comfort compared with manual compression in patients undergoing vascular procedures from a femoral artery access site. Recent large, single-centre studies andpost hocdata from the Acute Catheterization and Urgent Intervention Triage strategY (ACUITY) trial strongly suggest that newer generations of VCD decrease rates of vascular complications compared with manual compression, in contrast to earlier evaluations of first-generation devices. Unfortunately, utilisation of VCDs remains limited and mitigates the potential benefit that could result from expanded use of these devices. Newer entrants into the VCD market such as Starclose and Mynx are based on extravascular closure methodology. These devices address concerns of intravascular components of a VCD; however, whether these devices reduce vascular complications and bleeding has not been evaluated. In this brief article, we will examine these factors in greater detail and suggest an algorithm for VCD use in clinical practice.

Diamond-Stanic, Maggie Keck. "Diabetic Kidney Disease in the VCD Model of Menopause." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/195657.

Full text
Abstract:
Kidney disease is a major complication of diabetes and accounts for one-third of all diabetes-related deaths. Estrogen is considered protective against cardiovascular and non-diabetic renal disease, however it is unclear if this protection extends to diabetes and diabetic kidney disease. To address these questions, we have used a new model of menopause in which repeated daily injections of 4-vinylcyclohexene (VCD) induces gradual ovarian failure in mice. Unlike with ovariectomy, the VCD model preserves the gradual transition into ovarian failure (OF) (modeling perimenopause). Also, following OF, the residual ovarian tissue is retained and secretes androgens, similar to the androgen production by postmenopausal human ovaries. The VCD model of menopause was combined with the streptozotocin (STZ) model of type 1 diabetes, and the development of diabetes and diabetic kidney damage were studied over the subsequent 6 weeks. We observed that blood glucose levels are higher in post-OF diabetic mice compared to cycling diabetic and peri-OF diabetic mice. Renal cell proliferation, an early marker of kidney damage, is increased in post-OF diabetic mice compared to cycling diabetic mice, as measured by expression of proliferating cell nuclear antigen. We also demonstrate that expression of α-smooth muscle actin is increased in post-OF diabetic mice compared to cycling diabetic mice. Five weeks after STZ injection, post-OF diabetic mice had higher rates of urine albumin excretion than cycling diabetic mice.Using real-time PCR, we identified changes in expression between post-OF diabetic and cycling diabetic mice of genes which have previously been associated with diabetic kidney damage. We also show that some of these changes occur in peri-OF diabetic mice as well. Using microarray, we identified 119 new genes which are regulated by the combination of ovarian failure and diabetes in the mouse kidney. These data support our hypothesis that the changes in hormones which occur during the transition into ovarian failure exacerbate the development and progression of diabetic kidney damage in mice. These data also highlight the utility and importance of the VCD model of menopause in the study of diabetic kidney damage.

Abstract:
We propose a semi-active control of civil structures based on a one-step-ahead prediction of the seismic response. The vibration control device (VCD), which has been developed by authors, generates two types of resistance forces, i.e., a damping force proportional to the relative velocity and an inertial force proportional to the relative acceleration between two stories. The damping coefficient of the VCD can be changed with a command signal to an electric circuit connected to the VCD. In the present paper the command signal for changing the damping coefficient of each VCD is assumed to take two values, i.e., the command to take the maximum or minimum damping coefficient. The optimal command signal is selected from all candidates of command signals so that the Euclidean norm of the one-step-ahead predicted seismic response is minimized. As an example a semi-active control of a fifteen-story building with three VCDs is considered. The simulation results show that the proposed semi-active control achieves superior performance on vibration suppression compared with a passive control case where the damping coefficient of each VCD is fixed at its maximum value.

Abstract:
In a previous paper the authors proposed a semi-active vibration control device (VCD) that generates power. The device utilizes a ball screw, and has inertial and damping forces. The damping coefficient is adjusted by altering resistance at the terminal of the power generator. A small-scale VCD was manufactured for experimental testing. Frequency responses of a small-scale spring mass structure were measured in order to confirm the effects of vibration suppression within a wide range of frequencies. In this paper, as the next step, vibration tests using a benchmark structure with an installed VCD that has a 30 kN capacity are carried out at the National Center for Research on Earthquake Engineering (NCREE) in Taiwan. The benchmark structure has three stories with a 3 m height and a mass of 6 tons at each floor level for a total height and weight of 9 m and 18 tons, respectively. The VCDs are installed between adjacent floors with steel chevron braces. A simple control law that is based on a minimized Lyapunov function and employs bang-bang operation is used as a variable current controller instead of the modifying the resistance level of the VCD. Scaled earthquake motions including the Imperial Valley El Centro north-south component that is normalized to be a peak level of 0.5 m/s2, are applied to the base of the steel framed structure in the horizontal direction by a shaking table. Experimental responses of each floor for the uncontrolled and controlled cases are compared with analytical responses, and effects of vibration suppression for the large-scale model are discussed quantitatively.
