Scherpenhuizen, Johannes. "Dutch Technique: Comic Books, Discourse and Vedanta/The Saga of the Atlantean." Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2022. https://hdl.handle.net/2123/28060.

Full text
Abstract:
Dutch Technique is a work of experimental art which refuses classification and emerges variously in the form of comic-book pages, non-fiction writings, prose fiction, poetry and visual art. DT questions traditional binary modes of thinking which contrast sciences and arts, high arts and low arts, academic and non-academic discourse, science and religion/mysticism, and eschews discriminatory tribalism. It explores the inexhaustibility of the text, ideas and being in the form of comedy, drama, rhetoric, philosophical analysis and synthesis, poetic evocation and drama, liturgy and ritual. Its pri

Abstract:
This study attempts to show that an appeal to the 'perspective of the witness' is essential to better understand the way Sankara makes sense of the richly diverse Vedanta material. It goes beyond the general understanding that Sankara 'conveniently' arranges such material into the categories of the conventional and the absolute placing texts speaking of the Absolute (Brahman) with properties in the conventional/relative category. It suggests that the fundamental properties associated with a theistic conceptualisation of the Absolute, which all authoritative texts attest to, need not be seen as

Morton, Sherry L. "The Divene Devotee Hierarchy in the Theology of Râmnuja: Where the Master Becomes the Servant." Digital Archive @ GSU, 2007. http://digitalarchive.gsu.edu/philosophy_hontheses/1.

Full text
Abstract:
In The Theology of Râmânuja, John Braisted Carman carefully examines the south Asian philosopher Râmânuja’s concepts of the Supreme Person, and the relational dynamics between the Supreme Person and the devotee. Carman sees in Râmânuja’s discussion of the master (úesî)/servant (úesa) relationship the most important understandings concerning the hierarchy between the Supreme Person and the devotee. Carmen argues that in this devotional relationship there is a point at which the distinction between the master and the servant is dissolved, and mutual dependence is revealed. This paper focuses on

Full text
Abstract:
Democracy and mysticism are two prominent themes of Walt Whitman's writings, yet few critics have explored the connections that may exist between these areas. Some critics have noted that Whitman holds an ideal of "spiritual democracy," in which all people are equal due to their identity with a transcendent self such as that found in "Song of Myself," but they have not identified the best philosophical model for such a political viewpoint. I believe that the parallel between Whitman's thought and Vedantic mysticism, already developed by V. K. Chart and others, may be expanded to account for Wh

Abstract:
Abstract:
This research was stimulated by pastoral concerns pertaining to the South African Hindu Community. It was found that the community had a noticeable number of individuals stagnant or stranded at the level of gross spirituality. On the other hand it is known that the primary texts of Hinduism and its long mystical traditions, from the Vedic Period to the Neo-Vedanta Movement, had adequate motivational and goal-orientated material to address this challenge. This work surveys the Vedic and Upanishadic texts in order to show the literary, social and philosophical conditions under which they were p

Abstract:
This thesis investigates the use of metaphorical language in The Complete Works of Swami Vivekananda. Vivekananda is one of the most influential modern-day Hindu scholars, and his interpretation of the ancient Hindu scriptural lore is very significant. Vivekananda’s influence was part of the motivation for choosing his Complete Works as the empirical domain for the current study. Vivekananda’s Complete Works were mined using AntConc, for water-related terms which seemed to have a predilection for metaphoricity. Which terms to search for specifically was determined after a manual reading of a
