O objectivo fundamental do presente trabalho é a produção e caracterização do comportamento tribológico de novos sistemas vedantes de anéis cerâmicos de nitreto de silício (Si3N4) recobertos com diamante CVD (“Chemical Vapour Deposition”). Os anéis de empanque asseguram a vedação de veios em sistemas de circulação de fluidos de natureza diversa sendo sujeitos a solicitações tribológicas drásticas de natureza mecânica e/ou química. Os materiais cerâmicos são por isso uma classe em desenvolvimento para este tipo de aplicação. O Si3N4, de entre os cerâmicos técnicos, é um dos materiais com melhores propriedades mecânicas. Por sua vez, o diamante é um material inexcedível quanto à dureza e inércia química. Em estudos publicados sobre a potencial utilização do diamante CVD em sistemas vedantes, verificou-se que a baixa adesão a substratos convencionais de metal duro constituía o principal factor limitativo do tempo de vida, inviabilizando esta aplicação. No entanto, trabalhos anteriores do grupo de investigação em que se insere esta dissertação comprovaram a elevada adesão dos filmes de diamante CVD ao Si3N4. Por outro lado, há uma capacidade adquirida no fabrico de protótipos de anéis vedantes deste cerâmico. Com base nesta conjugação de experiência e perspectiva da excelência do sistema, procurou-se neste trabalho optimizar a espessura e rugosidade do revestimento de diamante CVD com vista ao estabelecimento da função vedante pretendida. Para além dos materiais envolvidos, é também um ponto inovador a realização de ensaios tribológicos em protótipos de sistemas vedantes mecânicos dinâmicos. Os ensaios tribológicos foram efectuados num tribómetro rotativo controlado por microprocessador, na configuração anel/anel, equipamento que simula, pela forma dos provetes, fluido de trabalho e parâmetros de operação, as condições de serviço dos sistemas de anéis vedantes. Testaram-se pares homólogos de anéis revestidos. Os parâmetros de ensaio situaram-se na gama de velocidade de rotação 500 - 2000 r.p.m. e carga normal total aplicada entre 0,3 e ≈1,0 kN, sob uma pressão de 2 bar de água destilada, à temperatura ambiente. Os ensaios tribológicos forneceram, em primeiro lugar, uma indicação do comportamento vedante em rodagem e no estado estacionário. Permitiram ainda a determinação do coeficiente de atrito bem como do produto pressão×velocidade (PV) mínimo e máximo de vedação, para cada par testado. O melhor sistema de vedação foi alcançado pelo par de anéis revestidos a diamante CVD com tamanho de grão mais fino (2 μm) garantido plena vedação para um intervalo PV entre 2,1 e 4,3 MPa⋅ms-1. O tempo cumulativo de funcionamento deste sistema atingiu cerca de 430 horas, correspondendo a uma distância total de deslizamento de aproximadamente 5730 km, sem quaisquer eventos indicadores de danificação das superfícies, isto é, sem desgaste mensurável. O coeficiente de atrito manteve-se baixo e em regime estacionário com um valor de 0,05. A ausência de vibrações ou picos instantâneos de atrito corroboram o excelente comportamento e estabilidade vedante deste novo tribosistema.
The main goal of the present work is the production and tribological behaviour characterization of a novel mechanical seal system based on CVD (Chemical Vapour Deposition) diamond coated silicon nitride (Si3N4) ceramic rings. Mechanical rings are used to seal rotating shafts of circulation systems of several distinct kinds of fluids, being submitted to drastic tribological solicitations, combining mechanical and chemical contributions. Ceramic materials are thus a class in development for this kind of application. Si3N4 is one of the technical ceramics with the best mechanical properties. On the other hand, diamond is the uppermost material concerning hardness and chemical inertness. In published works on the application of CVD diamond in sealing systems, its low adhesion to conventional hardmetal substrates was reported to be the main lifetime limiting factor, causing this application to be impracticable. Contrasting to this, previous works carried out by the hostage research group of the present dissertation, proved the high adhesion of CVD diamond films to Si3N4 substrates. Furthermore, there is an acquired know-how in the manufacturing of Si3N4 seal ring prototypes. Based on this experience and on the potential of the CVD diamond/Si3N4 system, the optimization of the thickness and roughness of the coating were selected as the main objectives of this work, seeking the intended sealing function. It was also an innovative point the accomplishment of tribological tests with mechanical seal prototypes. The tribological tests were carried out in a ring-onring microprocessor controlled rotary tribometer, with adequate sample geometries, working fluid and operation parameters, to simulate the field working behaviour. Homologous coated rings were tested. The experimental parameters were the following: rotational speed in the 500 - 2000 r.p.m. range; normal applied load between 0.3 and ≈1.0 kN; internal fluid (distilled water) pressure of 2 bar; room temperature. The tribological testing of the CVD diamond/Si3N4 mechanical seal system allowed the full characterisation of the running-in and stationary state regimes. Moreover, the friction coefficient was determined, as well as the minimum and maximum pressure×velocity product (PV), for each tested pair. The best sealing behaviour was found with the pair of Si3N4 coated rings with the finest grain (2 μm) polycrystalline diamond film. This system guaranteed a PV full sealing between 2.1 and 4.3 MPa⋅ms-1. The cumulative operation time of this system reached approximately 430 hours, corresponding to a total sliding distance of almost 5730 km, without any signs of surface damaging, i.e., no measurable wear. The stationary friction coefficient kept within a low value of 0.05. The absence of vibrations or instantaneous friction peaks corroborates the excellent behaviour and sealing stability of this new tribosystem.

O objetivo principal do presente trabalho consistiu na deposição de filmes de diamante sobre vedantes mecânicos e os seus ensaios numa bomba de água. Um vedante mecânico promove a ligação entre sistemas ou mecanismos, prevenindo a fuga de fluídos para o exterior. Estes, apesar de serem constituídos por materiais com boas propriedades, devido às condições exigentes do seu ambiente de trabalho, estão sujeitos ao desgaste da sua superfície podendo levar à sua incapacidade, provocando perdas de produção para troca dos empanques ou manutenção dos equipamentos. O diamante, devido às suas ótimas propriedades, como a elevada dureza e o baixo coeficiente de atrito, prefigurou-se como um material de revestimento para este tipo de dipositivos, facultando uma elevada resistência ao desgaste e diminuição do coeficiente de atrito, características que promovem melhorias no seu desempenho e tempo de vida. A deposição deste material com relativa simplicidade e baixo custo, tornou-se possível graças ao desenvolvimento de técnicas de Deposição a partir da Fase de Vapor (CVD) que permitiram o crescimento de diamante na forma de filmes finos (com propriedades similares ao diamante natural). A primeira fase desta dissertação foi dedicada à deposição de filmes de diamante em vedantes mecânicos de Carboneto de Tungsténio com Cobalto com auxílio à técnica HFCVD. Foram depositadas duas camadas de diamante (multicamada - MCD/NCD), com diferentes tamanhos de grão, com a finalidade de reter as melhores propriedades de cada tipo de filme. Algumas características chave, como a adesão do filme (uma das principais contrariedades dos filmes CVD e um dos aspetos mais importantes para conferir aos vedantes a capacidade de suportar as solicitações tribológicas e mecânicas a que estão sujeitos durante o seu funcionamento), nucleação, condições de deposição e pré-tratamentos foram estudados e potencializados para uma melhor deposição do diamante. Após esta efetuada, os revestimentos de diamante foram analisados com auxílio de técnicas próprias para esse fim (SEM e Raman). A segunda fase visa o ensaio dos vedantes depositados através da sua aplicação numa bomba de água, equipamento onde grande parte destes dispositivos são aplicados. Será analisado o seu comportamento em serviço, a ocorrência de falhas ou fuga de fluido para o exterior. Além disso, características como o desgaste superficial ou delaminação do filme da amostra vão ser investigadas, de forma a extrair conclusões da viabilidade da aplicação destes revestimentos de diamante em vedantes mecânicos de WC-Co com o intuito de incrementar o seu desempenho e tempo de vida.
The main point of this work consists in the deposition of diamond films over mechanical seals and their tests on a water pump. A mechanical seal promotes the connection between systems or mechanisms, preventing the flee of fluids to the exterior. These, although being constituted by materials with good properties, due to extreme conditions in their working environment, are liable to extreme surface wear, that can disable them. The diamond, due to its great properties, such as high hardness and low friction coefficient, is prefigured as an excellent choice to cover the surface of this devices, Characteristics that prolong their lifetime and boost their performance. The simplicity and low costness of this method, was possible to achieve due to the development of chemical vapor deposition techniques (CVD) that allowed the production of diamond in thin films (with similar properties to natural diamond). The first step of this dissertation was dedicated to the deposition of Diamond films in mechanical seals of tungsten carbide with cobalt using a technique called HFCVD. Two layers of diamond were deposited (multilayer – MCD/NCD), with different size of grain, with the purpose of retaining the best properties of each type of film. Some key properties like the film adhesion (one of the main setbacks of CVD films and one of the most important aspects that ensures the capacity to support the tribological and mechanical solicitations to which the film is subjected in operating conditions), nucleation, deposition conditions and pre-treatments were studied and potentialized for a better diamond deposition. After this process, the diamond coatings were analysed with the assistance of proper techniques (SEM and Raman). The second step focusses on the test of the mechanical seals installed in a water pump. The performance will be analysed, occurrence of failures or leakage of fluid to the exterior. Also, characteristics such as superficial wear or delamination of the sample film will be investigated, in order to draw conclusions on the feasibility of these coatings in mechanical seals (WC-Co) with the purpose of increasing their performance and life time.

A base deste relatório foi o estágio curricular desenvolvido na Amorim Cork Composites, uma das empresas do Grupo Amorim. Relativamente ao Grupo Amorim muitas são as afirmações de que este Grupo é dominante no mercado da cortiça mas, não existem estudos realizados que o comprovem. Daqui surgiu, então, a ideia de realizar um estudo para o mercado dos vedantes de cortiça, entre 2008 e 2012, sobre a concentração de mercado e dominância. Neste estudo é utilizada uma medida alternativa ao índice Herfindahl-Hirschman, que é baseada nas quotas de mercado das duas maiores empresas do mercado. Esta situação deriva do facto deste índice não poder, por si só, ser usado para estabelecer o exercício de poder de mercado ou dominância. Os resultados deste estudo mostram que o Grupo Amorim é a empresa dominante durante todo o período em análise, mesmo depois de testada a possibilidade de variação das barreiras à entrada existentes.
The base of this report was a curricular internship developed in Amorim Cork Composites, one of the Amorim Group companies. Concerning the Amorim Group, there are many claims that this Group is dominant in the cork market, but there are no studies that prove it. That is what gave the idea to realize a study on the cork stoppers market, between 2008 and 2012, about market concentration and dominance. This study used an alternative measure to Herfindahl-Hirschman Index, which is based on the market shares of the two largest companies in the market. This stems from the fact that this index can not, by itself, be used to establish the exercise of market power or dominance. The results show that Amorim Group is the dominant firm throughout the analyzed period, even after tested the variation possibility of the entry barriers.

O propósito do presente trabalho é a produção, caracterização mecânica, microestrutural e avaliação do comportamento tribológico de pares homólogos de anéis vedantes (empanques) de alumina (Al2O3). Os anéis de empanque têm por função garantir a vedação em veios rotativos de equipamentos nos quais circulam fluidos. Dadas as solicitações tribológicas extremas a que os materiais constituintes dos anéis são sujeitos, por vezes em ambientes altamente corrosivos, a alumina apresenta-se como uma excelente alternativa aos materiais tradicionalmente usados na produção destes vedantes (metal duro, carbono grafitizado, ligas ferrosas, etc.) devido à combinação das suas propriedades mecânicas e inércia química. Foram sinterizados três lotes de alumina a diferentes velocidades de aquecimento do forno, mantendo constantes as restantes condições de processamento. O aumento do valor deste parâmetro traduziu-se num incremento da taxa de densificação, resultando a densidade relativa de r=97,2% para a velocidade de aquecimento mais elevada (Vaq=20ºC/min). Este lote apresenta valores de dureza e tenacidade à fractura de HV=15,4GPa e KIc=3,7MPa.m1/2 respectivamente, resistência à flexão σF=279MPa e módulo de elasticidade E=322GPa. Os ensaios tribológicos anel/anel realizaram-se com diferentes velocidades de rotação (w), no intervalo 500 a 2000rpm, pressão de fluido (PL, água destilada) entre 0,5 e 2bar, sob carga normal (Nt) variando até ao valor necessário para a vedação plena. Os vedantes de alumina apresentaram valores de coeficiente de atrito extremamente reduzidos (<0,05), impossibilitando mesmo em alguns casos a sua determinação por se localizarem abaixo do limite de sensibilidade da máquina. Para w=2000rpm e PL=2bar conseguiu-se a estanquicidade total em dois dos três lotes ensaiados, com cargas totais de Nt=0,438kN (lote menos denso) e Nt=0,420kN (lote com maior densidade), obtendo-se para o produto PV, onde P representa a pressão efectiva e V a velocidade linear, PV=1,523MPa.m/s e PV=1,324MPa.m/s respectivamente. No primeiro caso determinou-se ainda o limite máximo de funcionamento em vedação plena, registando-se para Nt=0,900kN o valor de PV=4,200MPa.m/s. A análise posterior dos anéis revelou superfícies polidas por acção do movimento relativo entre os anéis, com rugosidade inferior à medida previamente à realização dos testes, sem delaminação ou fractura, não evidenciando qualquer tipo de destruição. Foi ainda testado o comportamento tribológico com azeite, meio potencialmente mais agressivo, corroborando a capacidade de funcionamento deste sistema vedante.
The purpose of the present work is the production, microstructural and mechanical characterization, and evaluation of the tribological behaviour of self-mated pairs of alumina mechanical seals. These components are used to ensure sealing in rotating shafts in equipments where a fluid is flowing. Due to the drastic tribological solicitations that seal rings are usually exposed to, sometimes in highly corrosive environments, alumina is a potential alternative to the commonly used materials (hardmetal, graphitized carbon, nonferrous alloys, etc.) due to the good combination of mechanical properties and chemical inertness. Three grades of alumina were sintered using different heating rates, keeping constant the remaining processing conditions. The increase of this parameter lead to a higher densification rate, the highest density (r=97,2%) being achieved when using the highest heating rate (Vaq=20ºC/min). The main mechanical properties were the following: HV=15,4GPa, KIc=3,7MPa.m1/2, σF=279MPa and E=322GPa. Ring-on-ring tribological tests were conducted using different rotational speeds (w) from 500 to 2000rpm, fluid pressure (PL, distilled water) between 0,5 and 2bar, under a normal load (Nt) varying until the complete sealing. The tests showed that the alumina mechanical seals could guarantee full sealing conditions, with extremely low values of friction coefficient (<0.05), sometimes turning impossible the recording of the results, as they were below the equipment sensitivity. Using w=2000rpm and PL=2bar, full sealing was achieved in two of the three grades of the tested seals, under applied loads of Nt=0.438kN (grade with the lowest density) and Nt=0.420kN (grade with the highest density). PV (being P the effective pressure and V the linear speed) lower limiting conditions were PV=1.523MPa.m/s and PV=1.324MPa.m/s, respectively. For the first of the previous mentioned grades, the upper limit was also determined, being PV=4.200MPa.m/s with Nt=0.900kN. The surface analysis of the tested seals showed a well polished surface, due to the relative motion between the rings, with a lower roughness when compared to the nominal finishing. No delamination, fracture or any kind of destruction were observed. The tribological behaviour of the alumina rings was also characterized using olive oil, potentially more aggressive fluid, corroborating the adequateness of the present system. These results, combined to some of the intrinsic properties of alumina (corrosion resistance, chemical inertness, low density when compared with that of the most traditionally materials used in seals production) create the expectation that alumina could be a feasible alternative to the most widely used materials used in this kind of application.

Os selantes butílicos, ou simplesmente mastiques, são produtos à base de borracha butílica que possibilitam a selagem, impedindo a passagem de fluidos através de superfícies e aberturas em diversos materiais. A facilidade de aplicação e a possibilidade de remoção após o seu uso, são duas vantagens que os distinguem de outros selantes, além de um rácio custo/benefício também bastante vantajoso. Estão disponíveis para venda, diluídos em solvente com aplicação a frio e isentos de solvente com aplicação a quente. Este projeto teve como objetivo desenvolver dois selantes de borracha butílica isentos de solvente (COV) para aplicação a frio: Selbutil-1 e Selbutil-2, tendo por base os produtos atualmente preparados pela empresa que contêm solvente (Sikabutyl-1 e Sikabutyl-2). Foi necessário reformular estes produtos no sentido de manter as suas características de desempenho ou, se possível, melhorá-las, diminuindo o impacto ambiental e torná-los menos perigosos para quem os manuseia. Desta forma recorreu-se a matérias-primas alternativas, seguindo-se o desenvolvimento de formulações e produção laboratorial. Efetuou-se um planeamento fatorial de experiências usando a metodologia de desenho de misturas para otimizar a percentagem de cargas, sílicas, plasticizantes e auxiliar de processo na formulação, sendo as variáveis resposta o escorrimento e o tempo de extrusão do selante. Os novos selantes Selbutil-1 e Selbutil-2 obtidos evidenciaram propriedades equivalentes aos de referência, nomeadamente, viscosidade, densidade, consistência e não possuem escorrimento. A única diferença foi a ausência de formação de pele, que se mostra estar associada à inclusão de solvente na preparação. As análises FTIR e os ângulos de contacto medidos sugerem que a composição à superfície do selante se modifica com a secagem do solvente possivelmente devido à migração preferencial de alguns constituintes da mistura como os plasticizantes.
The butyl sealants, or simply mastics, are butyl rubber based products that allow the sealing, preventing the passage of fluids through surfaces and openings in various materials. The ease of application and the possibility of removal after use, are two advantages that distinguish them from other sealants, as well as a quite advantageous cost / benefit ratio. They are available for sale, diluted in solvent for cold application and solvents free for heat application. This project aimed to develop two butyl rubber sealants free of solvent (VOC) for cold use: Selbutil-1 and Selbutil-2, which were based on two products currently produced by the company containing solvent (Sikabutyl-1 and Sikabutyl-2). It was necessary to reformulate these products to maintain its performance characteristics or if possible improve them, reducing the environmental impact and make them less dangerous for those who handle them. This way we used alternative raw materials, following the development of formulations and laboratory production. A factorial planning of experiences was developed using Mixture Design methodology to optimize the percentage of fillers, silicas, plasticizer and processing aid in the formulation, being response variables the outflow and the extruding time of the sealant. The new sealants obtained, Selbutil-1 and Selbutil-2, revealed equivalent properties to the references, in particular, viscosity, density, consistency and do not have outflow. The only difference was absence of skin formation, being a result of inclusion the solvent in the preparation. FTIR analyses and the measured angles of contact suggest that the composition at the surface of the sealant changes with the drying of the solvent, possibly due to preferential migration of some components of the mixture, as plasticizers.

The planar design of solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) is the most promising one due to its easier fabrication, improved performance and relatively high power density. In planar SOFCs and other solid-electrolyte devices, gas-tight seals must be formed along the edges of each cell and between the stack and gas manifolds. Glass and glass-ceramic (GC), in particular alkaline-earth alumino silicate based glasses and GCs, are becoming the most promising materials for gas-tight sealing applications in SOFCs. Besides the development of new glass-based materials, new additional concepts are required to overcome the challenges being faced by the currently existing sealant technology. The present work deals with the development of glasses- and GCs-based materials to be used as a sealants for SOFCs and other electrochemical functional applications. In this pursuit, various glasses and GCs in the field of diopside crystalline materials have been synthesized and characterized by a wide array of techniques. All the glasses were prepared by melt-quenching technique while GCs were produced by sintering of glass powder compacts at the temperature ranges from 800−900 ºC for 1−1000 h. Furthermore, the influence of various ionic substitutions, especially SrO for CaO, and Ln2O3 (Ln=La, Nd, Gd, and Yb), for MgO + SiO2 in Al-containing diopside on the structure, sintering and crystallization behaviour of glasses and properties of resultant GCs has been investigated, in relevance with final application as sealants in SOFC. From the results obtained in the study of diopside-based glasses, a bilayered concept of GC sealant is proposed to overcome the challenges being faced by (SOFCs). The systems designated as Gd−0.3 (in mol%: 20.62MgO−18.05CaO−7.74SrO−46.40SiO2−1.29Al2O3 − 2.04 B2O3−3.87Gd2O3) and Sr−0.3 (in mol%: 24.54 MgO−14.73 CaO−7.36 SrO−0.55 BaO−47.73 SiO2−1.23 Al2O3−1.23 La2O3−1.79 B2O3−0.84 NiO) have been utilized to realize the bi-layer concept. Both GCs exhibit similar thermal properties, while differing in their amorphous fractions, revealed excellent thermal stability along a period of 1,000 h. They also bonded well to the metallic interconnect (Crofer22APU) and 8 mol% yttrium stabilized zirconium (8YSZ) ceramic electrolyte without forming undesirable interfacial layers at the joints of SOFC components and GC. Two separated layers composed of glasses (Gd−0.3 and Sr−0.3) were prepared and deposited onto interconnect materials using a tape casting approach. The bi-layered GC showed good wetting and bonding ability to Crofer22APU plate, suitable thermal expansion coefficient (9.7–11.1 × 10–6 K−1), mechanical reliability, high electrical resistivity, and strong adhesion to the SOFC componets. All these features confirm the good suitability of the investigated bi-layered sealant system for SOFC applications.
A concepção planar de células de combustível de óxido sólido (SOFC) é a mais promissora devido a sua fabricação mais fácil, um melhor desempenho e uma densidade de potência relativamente elevada. Nas SOFCs planares e outros dispositivos de electrólitos sólidos são necessárias vedações estanques ao gás ao longo das arestas de cada uma das células e entre os tubos de distribuição de gás e de pilha. Materiais vítreos e vitrocerâmicos (GC), em particular com composições baseadas em aluminosilicatos alcalino-terrosos, estão entre os materiais mais promissores para aplicações de vedação à prova de gás em SOFCs. Além do desenvolvimento de novos materiais à base de vidros e vitrocerâmicos, são também necessários novos conceitos para superar os desafios enfrentados pela tecnologia selante atualmente existente. O presente trabalho visa dar um contributo nesse sentido, propondo soluções de vedação para SOFCs e outras aplicações electroquímicas. Para o efeito, foram sintetizados vários vidros e GCs à base de diópsido, os quais foram caracterizados por recurso a uma grande variedade de técnicas. Todos os vidros foram preparados por fusão, enquanto os GCs foram produzidos por sinterização (tratamento térmico) de compactos de pó de vidro nas faixas de temperatura de 800 − 900 ºC por 1 − 1000 h. Além disso, foram estudados os efeitos de diversas substituições iónicas, especialmente de CaO por SrO, e de MgO + SiO2 por Ln2O3 (Ln = La, Nd, Gd, e Yb), em composições de aluminosilicatos à base de diópsido na estrutura, sinterização e cristalização dos vidros e nas propriedades dos GCs resultantes com particular relevância para as propriedades de vedação em SOFCs. Com base nos resultados obtidos neste estudo, foi possível propor um novo conceito de selante vritrocerâmico em bi-camadas que visa ultrapassar os desafios enfrentados pelos vedantes actualmente usados em SOFCs. Os sistemas designados por Gd−0,3 (em % molar: 20,62 MgO−18,05 CaO−7,74 SrO−46,40 SiO2−1,29 Al2O3−2,04 B2O3−3,87 Gd2O3) e Sr−0,3 (em % molar: 24,54 MgO−14,73 CaO−7,36 SrO−0,55 BaO−47,73 SiO2−1,23 Al2O3−1,23 La2O3−1,79 B2O3−0,84 NiO) foram seleccionados para realizar o conceito de bi-camada. Ambos os GCs exibem propriedades térmicas semelhantes, e excelente estabilidade térmica ao longo de um período de 1.000 horas, mas diferem nas suas fracções vítreas/cristalinas. Eles revelaram também elevada aptidão para se ligarem à interconexão metálica (Crofer22APU) e ao electrólito sólido (zircónia estabilizada com 8 mol% de ítria (8YSZ) sem a formação de camadas interfaciais indesejáveis entre os diferentes componentes das SOFCs. Duas camadas separadas compostas pelos vidros (Gd−0,3 e Sr−0.3) foram preparadas e depositadas sobre as interconexões metálicas através de uma abordagem tape casting. As bi-camadas vitrocerâmicas mostram boa capacidade de molhamento e ligação à placa Crofer22APU, coeficientes de expansão térmica adequados (9,7−11,1 × 10−6 K−1), confiabilidade mecânica, elevada resistividade eléctrica, e uma forte adesão aos componentes da SOFC. Todas estas características confirmam a boa adequação do sistema selante bi-camadas investigado para aplicações em SOFCs.

A tese tem por objetivo efetivar a análise e demonstração das estratégias discursivas através das quais Çaìkara, o célebre pensador do Hinduísmo medieval (circa 788-820 d.C.), formulou a doutrina monista do Advaita-ved Tnta, construindo para isso um discurso dialógico com relação às principais doutrinas dualistas e ritualísticas adversárias de seu tempo, dentre elas, respectivamente, o S TRkhya-Yoga-darçana e o Mémäàsä-darçana. A análise dos textos sânscritos de Çaìkara dedicados a interpretar as escrituras védicas segue os pressupostos da teoria do discurso, da semiótica de nivel fundamental e dos estudos de intertextualidade, e radica em dois eixos: (1) - o estudo da construção de um discurso monista, apesar das exigências irredutíveis das categorias binárias às quais se curvam a linguagem e o raciocínio humanos; e (2) - o exame dos mecanismos diversos de persuasão e argumentação constantes nos escritos do pensador, os quais constroem uma interpretação específica dos textos védicos ao mesmo tempo em que refutam pontos de vista outrora válidos na tradição sânscrita. A primeira parte da tese, intitulada \"A revelação do Um\", apresenta uma síntese da herança cultural que é pressuposta na leitura dos textos do pensador e uma análise semiótica da articulação, no nível fundamental, do conceito de Absoluto ou \"um-sem-segundo\", Brahman, conforme descrito nas Upaniñad e interpretado por Çaìkara. The main purpose of this thesis is to analyse and demonstrate those discursive strategies through which Çaìkara, the famous philosopher of medieval Hinduism (circa 788-820 a.C.), has formulated the monistic doctrine of Advaita-vedänta, to which purpose he has elaborated a dialogical discourse in relation to some of the main dualistic and ritualistic opposing doctrines of his time: the Säàkhya-Yoga-darçana and the Mémäàsä-darçana, respectively. Our analysis of the sanskrit texts in which Çaìkara interprets the vedic scriptures is based on the theories of discourse, on the principles of the French school of Semiotics and also on studies of intertextuality. This inedit analysis intends to: (1) - analyse the inter-relation of concepts in the fundamental level of significance that can build a monistic discourse, in spite of those irreductible binary categories that govern human language and reasoning; (2) - examine those mechanisms of persuasion and argumentation which are constant in Çaìkara\'s writings and which help to build specific interpretations of the vedic scriptures, refuting at the same time the points of view of other doctrines. The first part of the thesis, entitled \"The revelation of One\", gives a synthesis of the cultural heritage which is pressuposed in the reading of Çaìkara\'s writings, and afterwards makes a semiotic analysis, on the fundamental level, of the concept of Absolute or \"one-without-a-second\", Brahman, according to the way it\'s given by the Upaniñad texts and interpreted by Çaìkara. In the second part of the thesis, entitled \"Paths of the Two\", are analysed some of those discoursive and intertextual mechanisms through which the thinker can re-signify and assimilate into his monistic doctrine the relative universe and those binary and ternary categories according to what was postulated by other doctrines of his cultural heritage. The thesis contributes to demonstrate that the theories of discourse are valid instruments in the process of analysis of those mechanisms through which verbal language can create and express abstract concepts which, at first, are not aprehensible in the world of phenomenae. The work has also the purpose of adding to brazilian bibliography, under an inedit approach, texts belonging to an important aspect of sanskrit culture.

Tiriamiesiems reikėjo pravesti taikinį trim skirtingo pločio labirintais. Tyrimo metu buvo registruojami akių ir rankos judesiai, pagal kurios buvo analizuojami žvilgsnio šuolio amplitudės, atstumas tarp rankos ir žvilgsnio prieš įvykstant žvilgsnio šuoliui, akies ir rankos greičių santykis bei gautieji rezultatai įvertinti remiantis Fitso dėsniu, kuris įvertino, kaip tiksliai ir greitai tiriamieji atliko labirintus. Gautieji rezultatai parodė, kad didėjant rankos greičiui ir esant platesniam labirintui žvilgsnio šuolių amplitudžių ir atstumo tarp rankos ir žvilgsnio prieš įvykstant žvilgsnio šuoliui vidurkiai bei jų standartiniai nuokrypiai didėja. Akies ir greičio santykis parodė, kad esant mažesniems greičiams akis lenkia ranką, o didėjant ranka pralenkia akį. Tyrimo rezultatai gali būti panaudoti kuriant robotų programinę įranga, neurofiziologinių procesų analizei bei įvertinti žmogaus koordinaciją reabilitacijos metu.
The theme of Bachelor project of Electronics engineering is important for research in biomedical engineering. In my purpose is to investigate eye-hand coordination during target guiding by hand along labyrinth. Investigatives have to guide a target in different wide of labyrinth. First they have to guide a target in the narrowest labyrinth, which wide is 10 px, later in the widest labyrinth, which wide is 39 px and last in moderate labyrinth, which wide is 15 px. In this labyrinth investigatives have to guide targets of two different sizes. They have to guide at different speed and precision. Eye coordinates were recorded by EyeGaze System, which produced LC Technologies, Ltd. Hand coordinates were recorded by WACOM Intuos® 2 XD-1212-U graphic tablet. During the research recorded eye and hand coordinates, which were analysed. Due to this information, were calculated gaze jump amplitudes, distance between the gaze and hand before gaze will do a jump, gaze and hand speed ratio and results were evaluated by Fitts‘s law. Results revealed that average and standart deviation of these parameters are major if speed of target becomes faster and labyrinth is wider. Gaze and hand speed ratio revealed, that at slow speed gaze overtake a hand and vice versa. In accordance with results, which were evaluated by Ftts‘s law, revealed that the longest duration and least precision are in the narrowest labyrinth. In The Theology of Râmânuja, John Braisted Carman carefully examines the south Asian philosopher Râmânuja’s concepts of the Supreme Person, and the relational dynamics between the Supreme Person and the devotee. Carman sees in Râmânuja’s discussion of the master (úesî)/servant (úesa) relationship the most important understandings concerning the hierarchy between the Supreme Person and the devotee. Carmen argues that in this devotional relationship there is a point at which the distinction between the master and the servant is dissolved, and mutual dependence is revealed. This paper focuses on the point where the roles in the relationship between the divine and the devotee are reversed. In this reversal the master takes on the role of the servant and the servant the master. It is argued here that this role reversal is the action that illuminates the ultimate dissolution of the hierarchy that Râmânuja recognizes and results in spiritual empowerment for the devotee.

Democracy and mysticism are two prominent themes of Walt Whitman's writings, yet few critics have explored the connections that may exist between these areas. Some critics have noted that Whitman holds an ideal of "spiritual democracy," in which all people are equal due to their identity with a transcendent self such as that found in "Song of Myself," but they have not identified the best philosophical model for such a political viewpoint. I believe that the parallel between Whitman's thought and Vedantic mysticism, already developed by V. K. Chart and others, may be expanded to account for Whitman's political thought. Past studies of Whitman and Vedanta have focused only on the advaitic aspects of his writing, but in his later years he came to adopt a visistadvaitic stance similar to that of Ramanuja. In the political sphere, his concept of a Brahmanic self shared by all people led him to not only believe that all people are equal, but that they also possess the capacity to become contributors to a democratic society. Whitman felt that the poet was the primary means by which the masses could attain mystical consciousness and the concomitant social harmony. The ideal poet described in Democratic Vistas and the Preface to the 1855 Leaves of Grass serves as a mediator between the people as they are and Whitman's ideal of a completely unified democratic society and thereby parallels the Vedantic guru's function of bridging the relative and absolute levels of reality.

This thesis proposes that concepts of self and mutuality with others, found in ancient Indian (Hindu Vedantist) and Yoruba (West African) philosophies can be applied to art school pedagogy and potentially beyond. Mind, self, identity and agency in these traditions echo recent thinking on the student being by Ronald Barnett, and critical consciousness as defined by Paulo Freire. Situating oneself as part of, yet distinct from others, leads naturally to reflection on the nature of self and identity; the thesis urges that art education engage with more awareness of students as cultural, political, and ontological entities, and with learning and teaching as an act of mutual exchange. In support, case studies are presented, gathered through dialogic interviews in a project called 4 Minds. These capture students’ experience of art school pedagogy, Yoruba and Vedantic ideas of the self in relation to society, and their views on the constitution of the self and its role in education. Research methodology and methods employed are reflexive and phenomenological; their impetus has come from responses to a course on Yoruba, Hindu and postcolonial theory, leading to an in-depth examination of its contents, pedagogic tools, and implications for creative education. From this has emerged a theoretical framework for extracting key elements of the originating course and its pedagogic strategies, underscored by specific Yoruba and Vedantic concepts in dialogue with Barnett and Freire.

This thesis examines the issue of lineage in the Brahma-Madhva-Gaudiya Vaisnava sampradiiya. In the South Asian context, the idea of sampradiiya or lineage guarantees the authenticity of a religious community. A widely accepted view designated the followers of Ramanuja, Madhva, Nirnbarka, and Visnu Svarni as the four sampradiiyas. Starting with Kavi Karnapiira in the 16th CE, the Gaudiyas claimed their affiliation with Madhva. This claim for the Madhva-Gaudiya affiliation was consolidated as late as in the 18th CE. At the time, the Gaudiyas rose to the prominence at the court of Jaisingh H. However, in his public role Jaisingh H wished to promote the image of being a righteous king (dharmartija). Thus, the king perceived ,the following aspects of the Gaudiya tradition problematic: (1) the Gaudiyas ' ambiguous sampradiiya affiliation, (2) their lack of any BraSii commentary, and (3) the extramarital relationship between Radha and Krsna. In response, Baladeva wrote the Govindabhiisya to solidify the authority of the Gaudiya tradition. To understand the nature of the Madhva-Gaudiya affiliation, the first part of the thesis examines the sampradiiya affiliation of Caitanya. I make a distinction between a formal affiliation and a theological affiliation, and suggest that Caitanya might have been formally affiliated with the Madhvas but his theological affiliation is unclear. Since Caitanya did not compose any theological works, I examine Jiva's theology instead, to understand the theological relation between the Gaudiyas and the Madhvas. For this purpose, the second part of the thesis compares the commentaries of Madhva, Vijayadhvaja, Sridhara, and Jiva on the Catuhslokibhiigavata. This comparative study makes it clear that Jiva's commentary differs from the rest, theologically, exegetically, and stylistically. With the background of what is discussed in the first two parts of the thesis, the last part of the thesis examines Baladeva's Govindabhiisya in relation to the Brahmasiitra commentaries of Sankara, Rarnanuja, and Madhva. I conclude that the Gaudiya affiliation with the Madhvas is formal but their affiliation with Brahma is theological.

Este é um estudo sobre as interfaces entre turismo e religião, particularmente sobre busca espiritual e peregrinações à Índia. Os principais temas por mim abordados são religiosidade e turismo (espiritualidade e viagem/peregrinação, na visão dos informantes). Inicialmente estudei um tipo de viajante que parecia conectado a uma rejeição a classificação de turista bem como de religioso. Após realizar trabalho de campo com diversos informantes na Índia, analisei duas viagens de peregrinação à Índia realizadas por um grupo de estudantes de Vedanta do Rio de Janeiro. A questão principal foi entender os significados que assumem estas peregrinações e as motivações dos peregrinos. No desenvolvimento da pesquisa, outra questão se revelou fundamental compreender a construção do Vedanta enquanto projeto, bem como o sentido da busca espiritual para o grupo estudado. Esta tese se baseia nas minhas experiências de viagens à Índia, nos depoimentos dos tipos de turista que por lá encontrei, no grupo de estudantes de Vedanta e suas peregrinações, e nas aulas de Vedanta que freqüentei. Um dos resultados mais significativos foi perceber que os viajantes estudados realizavam suas viagens motivados não só pela dimensão religiosa, como também pelas expectativas e ideias culturais relacionadas tanto à noção de viagem (o que proporciona a experiência da mesma) como da Índia (lugar percebido como o mais religioso do mundo).
This study is about the interfaces between tourism and religion, particularly about spiritual search and pilgrimages to India. The main themes approached here are religiosity and tourism (spirituality and travel/pilgrimage, according to the informants). Initially, I studied a type of tourist which seemed connected by a rejection to being classified as tourists or religious. After doing fieldwork with some travellers in India, I analyzed two pilgrimages to India made by a group of Vedanta students from Rio de Janeiro. The main question was to understand the meanings of these pilgrimages and the pilgrims motivations. In the research development process, another question became essential to understand the Vedanta construction as a project, as well as the meanings of the spiritual search for the studied group. This thesis is based upon my travel experiences in India; the interviews with the types of tourist that I met there; the group of Vedanta students and their pilgrimages; and the Vedanta classes I took. One of the most meaningful results was to realize that the pilgrims I studied undertook their trips motivated not only by a religious dimension, but also by the expectations and cultural ideas related to the notions of journey (what provides its experience) and of India (a place seen as the most religious in the world).

In this thesis I provide an additional perspective on the development of Rādhā- Kṛṣṇa who are regarded as the central divinity in many religious traditions in South Asia, by examining the primary sources of the Nimbārka Sampradāya. This school of the Hindu religious tradition of Vaiṣṇavism is unique in its identification of the ontological category of Brahman (the supreme being) solely with Rādhā-Kṛṣṇa, where both are conjointly understood to be the eternal deity, not an avatāra (incarnation) or vyūha (emanation). Previous scholarship on the early phases of this sampradāya has focussed on issues of philosophy and doctrine, with a few attempts beset by demonstrably deficient reasoning at positing a chronology. Although the later tradition has been documented in detail, owing to the absence of a settled chronology, mechanisms of Nimbārkī inter-sectarian relations at this stage of development in early modern Vraja (Braj) have not been satisfactorily established. In Part One, I provide a survey of the current theories on the development of Kṛṣṇa (who has received wide scholarly treatment) and Rādhā, re-evaluating Sanskrit and Prakrit textual and epigraphic sources with focus on the divinity of these two figures, positing that although there exist allusions to the godhood of Kṛṣṇa antecedent to the common era, the same cannot be said of Rādhā. Part Two discusses the sources available for Nimbārka and with a view to bringing to light any noteworthy findings, on the basis of comparative studies of the Brahmasūtra commentarial tradition I provide a new chronology for Nimbārka and his immediate followers. Following on from this, I discuss Nimbārka’s works in which is presented his innovation: the deification of Rādhā-Kṛṣṇa. I then examine the rationalisation of this doctrine by Puruṣottama (third successor to Nimbārka), whose exegetical efforts diminish the impact of this teaching in the wider Vaiṣṇava context. In Part Three, I turn to the legacy of Nimbārka and in an important revelation for Vaiṣṇava studies, I show that whilst the early tradition reserved the theological identity of Brahman for the most eligible initiates, in 15th century Vraja a renaissance of Rādhā-Kṛṣṇa devotion was instigated by Keśava Kāśmīrin, Śrībhaṭṭa and Harivyāsa Deva who influenced the contemporary and later sects which, in the modern period, have transported the phenomenon of Rādhā-Kṛṣṇa devotion across the globe.

Bodhasāra, previously untranslated into English, is a Sanskrit treasure. Written by Narahari in eighteenth century India, it consists of charming Sanskrit verse of the highest order. Full of metaphors and word puns, it is a clever piece of literature that stimulates the intellect and imagination. By carefully following the traditional protocols, Bodhasāra remains acceptable to orthodox Advaita Vedāntins. However, although superficially it appears to be merely another presentation of the Advaita Vedānta tradition, in-depth reading reveals a refreshingly new style. The Hindu tradition is poetically presented as invaluable to awaken discernment between the real and unreal, but the import of Bodhasāra is that, ultimately, liberation requires a maturity that is not bound by anything, including the tradition itself; it comes through an awakening discernment. Narahari is celebrating jīvanmukti, not as liberation from the world, but as liberation while living. Bodhasāra is stylishly poetic, but not poetry for poetry’s sake, nor bhakti (religious devotion); rather it exemplifies the potency of rasa (aesthetic flavour) and dhvani (aesthetic suggestion). Narahari understands the correspondence between words and truth and uses his poetic style to facilitate union of the individual and universal. Few eighteenth century Sanskrit works have even been read, let alone translated into English, so this translation of Bodhasāra is a valuable example of Indian thought immediately before Colonialism. It shows what modernity, defined here as a moving away from entrenched traditional beliefs to an empowerment of the individual living in the present moment, in an Indian context could have been like if Colonialism had not intervened. The implications of Bodhasāra to scholars of Indian history, Advaita Vedānta and Yoga need to be considered. Bodhasāra extends the project ‘Sanskrit knowledge systems on the eve of colonialism’ being a work on mokṣa written in the late eighteenth century. It revitalises academic research into Advaita Vedānta, presents a fresh view of Yoga, and fits well the notion of an Indian modernity or renaissance during the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries.

This study attempts to show that an appeal to the 'perspective of the witness' is essential to better understand the way Sankara makes sense of the richly diverse Vedanta material. It goes beyond the general understanding that Sankara 'conveniently' arranges such material into the categories of the conventional and the absolute placing texts speaking of the Absolute (Brahman) with properties in the conventional/relative category. It suggests that the fundamental properties associated with a theistic conceptualisation of the Absolute, which all authoritative texts attest to, need not be seen as dogmatic tenets that Sankara has to contend with while expounding his non-dual system of thought. Instead, it argues that they should be regarded as meaningful devices that have for their sole purpose to lead the spiritual seeker to the realization of the absolute unity of being, a result that the Advaita tradition holds as the highest goal of life. Three key conceptions of Brahman are explored: Brahman as the cause of the world, as an entity who is gracious towards his devotees, and as an object of devotion. It is argued that all three can be better understood and appreciated when considered in their proper and larger pedagogical context, whose climax is 'the perspective of the witness.' The first three chapters of this thesis are mainly concerned with epistemological and didactic means that are associated with demonstrating the 'perspective of the witness.' The fourth and fifth chapters evaluate how much help such a standpoint can provide us in our appraisal of these three aspects of the Absolute in the context of Sarikara's writings.

Abstract:
The Ocean of Inquiry is a vernacular compendium of Advaita Vedānta, one of the most influential traditions of South Asian religion and philosophy, especially in modern times. Its author, Niścaldās (ca. 1791 – 1863), was a classically trained pandit and a sādhu of the Dādū Panth. His work was widely read in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, both in its Hindi original and in regional translations: Vivekananda once referred to it as the most influential book in India. Surprisingly, however, The Ocean of Inquiry remains virtually unknown to Western scholars; even specialists in Hinduism have rarely heard of it. This dissertation aims to draw attention both to Niścaldās’s work and to the broader genre of vernacular Vedānta; it also calls into question the notion that late Advaita Vedānta represents a period of intellectual decline. Part I provides a historical and textual overview of The Ocean of Inquiry, arguing that Niścaldās’s work should be situated within what might be termed "Greater Advaita Vedānta," or Advaita Vedānta as it was disseminated outside the received canon of Sanskrit philosophical works. This part of the dissertation also offers the first comprehensive biography of Niścaldās in English, and it analyzes the significance of his choice to write in the vernacular. Part II investigates the relationship of philosophy and religious practice in Niścaldās’s work. Taking as its starting point the question "What does it mean for knowledge to liberate?" this part of the dissertation argues that for Niścaldās, the key distinction is not between theoretical knowledge and liberating knowledge but between doubtful and doubt-free awareness. For those who are properly qualified, the central practice on the path to liberation is the practice of inquiry (vicāra), interpreted as a dialectical process of raising and removing doubts. This interpretation is supported with three "case studies" of characters in The Ocean of Inquiry who reach liberation. The conclusion is that for Niścaldās, philosophical inquiry is not a purely theoretical undertaking; under the right conditions, it can become a concrete religious practice.

Nous nous appuyons sur la rencontre avec des personnes témoignant d’un vécu « non duel », dans une approche phénoménologique. Cette recherche aspire à donner un nouvel ancrage à la psychologie, dans le terreau de la philosophie. D’autres questions sont abordées, telles que celles de l’identité, de nos représentations, de la réalité, de la pensée et de sa distinction d’avec la conscience, notre rapport à la souffrance, au temps, et l’intensité du vécu lorsqu’il se situe dans le présent, l’appréhension de ce qu’est la réalité pour nos témoins dans ce présent et sans la saisie par la pensée, et la disparition de la distinction sujet/objet au niveau de l’Être. Nous tentons aussi d’aborder la quête d’un absolu, en rendant compte de l’accueil de la vie telle que celle-ci nous apparaît, dans sa singularité et dans son immanence.Nous pointons aussi la difficulté de nos témoins de dire avec des mots la teneur de leur vécu, ce qui aboutit souvent à des paradoxes, mais nous tentons aussi de montrer que la rencontre est vivante et que ce n’est pas tant ce qui se dit, que ce qui sous-tend ce qui est dit, qui a valeur de vérité et d’authenticité. The theme of "non duality" (advaïta vedanta) raises questions regarding living beyond our identifications, such as identifications with our body and with a separate “me". We build on meetings with people testifying of a non-dual living, and we do so with a phenomenological approach. This research aspires to give psychology a new anchorage in philosophy’s fertile ground.Other questions are approached, such as those of identity, of our representations, of reality, of thought and its distinction from consciousness, also raised are questions on our relation with suffering, with time, with the intensity of living when this living is situated in the present, with the apprehension of what reality is for our witnesses in this present without the grasp of thought, and with the end of the distinction subject/object at the level of the Being. We also try to tackle the topic of the quest for the absolute, while reflecting on the way we can welcome life as it appears to us, in its uniqueness and its immanence.We also point out the difficulty for our witnesses to put into words the content of their living, a situation which often leads to paradoxes. On the other hand, we also try to show that the meeting is full of life, and that it is not so much what is said than what underlies what is said - including the silence and the presence –that bears truth.Non-duality thus allows us to consider a listening free from limiting thought, anchored in a physical and emotional resonance. Lastly, it gives Consciousness an essential dimension, that of respect for what is given to be seen and to be heard, and that of a possible answer for the quest of Being which lies dormant in every human being

Uppsatsens syfte var att undersöka området personlig utveckling samt personlig avveckling utifrån Sri Nisargadatta Maharajs lära och Abraham Maslows idéer. Frågeställningarna på området var: Är personlig utveckling och personlig avveckling motsatta eller identiska företeelser? Vilka likheter och skillnader finns hos Maharaj och hos Maslow? Vad har språket och dess användning för roll vid en jämförelse av dessa personers texter? De avgränsningar som gjordes för att undersöka området var att välja rörelserna humanistisk psykologi och advaita vedanta eftersom de upplevdes representera detta område på ett centralt sätt. Vidare avgränsades undersökningens metodval till diskursanalys med fokus på hur självförverkligande framställs diskursivt hos Abraham Maslow och Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj. Metoden var diskursanalys med stöd av metodboken Diskursanalys, och materialet koncentrerades till att omfatta Sri Nisargadatta Maharajs verk I am that: talks with Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj samt Abraham Maslows två verk Motivation and personality samt Toward a psychology of being. Den teori som anlades var fenomenologiskt perspektiv. Undersökningen visade att personliga omständigheter, tradition, olika perspektiv men även språkanvändning kan påverka hur man ser på och talar om kategorierna personlig utveckling respektive personlig avveckling. Slutsatsen efter undersökningen är att oavsett vilka termer man använder kommer både personlig utveckling och personlig avveckling vara aktuellt överallt där de grundläggande behoven för människan är tryggade: hur är upp till henne själv.

Abstract:
The wave of gurus in America brought with them cultural transformations particularly in how they interpret Hinduism, how their teachings have adapted in engaging a Western audience, and the sustainability of their religious communities, thus changing the landscape of contemporary Hindu spirituality. The traditional model of the guru and disciple relationship according to Yoga and Vedanta is undergoing a transformation allowing for greater autonomy of the disciple to make decisions in how they appropriate the authority of the guru. This thesis examines the guru and disciple relationship within the institutional organization of the Yoga Research Foundation, founded by the contemporary guru, Swami Jyotirmayananda. Research of Jyotirmayananda’s unique following of Western disciples illuminates the nature of his authority through the establishment of his order and methods by which disciples navigate identity formation and experience religious transmission.

Abstract:
O desenvolvimento de produtos com cortiça aglomerada é uma estratégia muito vantajosa no que respeita à reutilização de resíduos de cortiça produzidos durante o processo de produção de rolhas naturais, havendo uma grande variedade de produtos disponíveis, como as rolhas microaglomeradas. Atualmente, a Amorim Top Series visa o desenvolvimento de soluções inovadoras que respondam às necessidades e às tendências do mercado, isto é, soluções que permitam atingir um elevado nível de sustentabilidade. A utilização de recursos naturais, como óleo de girassol ou ricínio, para a produção de aglomerantes com conteúdo natural elevado é uma boa alternativa para a eliminação de aglomerantes de poliuretano (PU) sintetizados com polióis derivadas do petróleo. Neste contexto o presente trabalho teve como primeiro objetivo a otimização do produto Neutrotop Standard, tendo sido realizados vários testes de controlo de qualidade, para selecionar o melhor conjunto de características (como o calibre ou o tratamento superfície das rolhas) para melhorar a vedação das rolhas. O segundo objetivo consistiu na caracterização detalhada de vários aglomerantes (três aglomerantes de origem natural, dois aglomerantes já utilizados na empresa e oito aglomerantes alternativos aos de referência, sintetizados com diisocianato de tolueno (TDI)). A caracterização dos aglomerantes foi feita usando filmes, tendo sido realizada uma análise da variação de massa e volume, durante cinco semanas, com filmes húmidos (submersos em frascos com uma solução etanólica 50 % (v/v)) e filmes secos (deixados na estufa durante 24 horas). Esta caracterização permitiu a avaliação da estabilidade das colas em contacto com uma solução com uma elevada percentagem de etanol que permite simular o contacto com bebidas espirituosas. Foi também produzido e validado um novo produto “Neutrotop Bio”. Quanto à otimização do produto standard, os melhores resultados, em todos os testes realizados, foram conseguidos com o aumento do calibre, mais especificamente de um diâmetro de 19.5 mm para 19.7 mm. Com o aumento do diâmetro das rolhas, conseguiu-se encontrar uma solução com melhor capacidade de vedação, em comparação com o produto atual. No que respeita à caracterização dos aglomerantes, obtiveram-se resultados favoráveis, em filme, para os três aglomerantes de base biológica testados, que demonstraram uma boa estabilidade em contacto com a solução de etanol, tanto a nível de variação de massa como a nível dimensional. Para além do estudo em filmes, os aglomerantes também foram testados na produção de rolhas, realizando-se vários testes de controlo de qualidade (testes de densidade, absorção e envelhecimento) para validação do produto Neutrotop Bio. Este novo produto apresenta características semelhantes ao produto standard da empresa e, cumpriu as especificações necessárias para aprovação nos vários testes de qualidade.
The development of products with agglomerated cork is an advantageous strategy regarding the reuse of cork wastes produced during the production process of natural corks, with a wide variety of products available, such as micro agglomerated stoppers. Currently, Amorim Top Series aims to develop solutions that respond to the trends of the market, such as, solutions that allow reaching a high level of sustainability. The conversion of natural resources, such as sunflower oil or castor oil, to produce binders with a high natural content is a promising alternative solution for replacing polyurethane (PU) binders synthesized with petroleum-derived polyols. In this context, the first objective of the present work was the optimization of the Neutrotop Standard product, where several quality control tests were carried out, to select the best set of characteristics (such as the caliber or the surface treatment of the stoppers) to improve the sealing of the micro-agglomerated stoppers. The second objective was the characterization of several binders (three bio based binders, two binders already used in the company and eight alternative binders, in respect to the reference ones, synthesized with toluene diisocyanate (TDI)). The characterization of the binders was made on films, following an analysis of the variation of mass and volume, for five weeks, on wet films (submerged in flasks with 50% (v/v) EtOH solution) and dry films (left in the oven for 24 hours). This characterization allowed the evaluation of the stability of the glues in contact with a solution with a high percentage of ethanol that allows simulating the contact with spirits. Then, a new product, “Neutrotop Bio” was also produced and validated. As for the optimization of the standard product, the best results, were achieved with the increase of the caliber, more specifically from a diameter of 19.5 mm to 19.7 mm. With the increase in the diameter of the stoppers, it was possible to find a solution with superior sealing ability, compared to the current product. Regarding the characterization of the binders, in the form of film, favorable results were obtained, for the three bio-based binders tested, which demonstrated better stability in contact with the ethanolic solution, both in terms of mass variation and dimensional level. In addition, the binders were also tested in the production of stoppers, being carried out several quality tests (density, absorption, and aging tests) to validate the Neutrotop Bio product. This new product, has characteristics similar to the company's standard product and fulfils the necessary specifications for approval in the various quality tests.

Nos autoclismos para sanitários desenvolvidos e produzidos na empresa OLI - Sistemas Sanitários, S.A. usam-se componentes elastoméricos que têm sido produzidos em borrachas vulcanizadas. Nos últimos anos a empresa tem vindo a substituir estes materiais por termoplásticos elastoméricos. Neste programa de trabalhos, para além da identificação dos componentes a substituir, pretende-se verificar a aplicabilidade dos termoplásticos elastoméricos em peças que estão sujeitas à fadiga em flexão durante um período de tempo. Assim: a) foi feita a revisão do estado da arte do comportamento à fadiga de elastómeros termoplásticos; b) foi desenvolvido um equipamento para a avaliação do comportamento à fadiga de vedantes circulares planos injetados num elastómero termoplástico (TPE), em ambiente com temperatura controlada; c) foi analisado o processo de envelhecimento do TPE em contacto com a água em função da temperatura. Como resultado final do programa foram obtidas as curvas de fadiga do elastómero termoplástico usado em vedantes circulares planos, e estabelecidos os períodos críticos do envelhecimento do TPE através da evolução da dureza.
In the toilet cisterns developed and produced in the company OLI - Sanitary Systems, S.A elastomeric components that have been made from vulcanized rubbers are now being used. In recent years the company has been replacing these materials for elastomers thermoplastics. In this work program, in addition to identifying the components to be replaced, it is intended to verify the applicability of elastomeric thermoplastics in parts that are subject to fatigue in bending over a period of time. This work includes: a) a review of the state of the art of fatigue behavior of thermoplastic elastomers was carried out; b) the development of equipment to evaluate the fatigue behavior of flat circular seals injected in a thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) in temperature controlled conditions; c) the analysis of the aging process of TPE in contact with water as a function of temperature. As a final result of the program, the fatigue curves of the thermoplastic elastomer used in flat circular seals were obtained and the critical periods of TPE aging were determined by analysing the evolution of the hardness.
