af, Edholm Kristoffer. "Rajyasri : Royal Splendour in the Vedas and the Epics." Thesis, Stockholms universitet, Religionshistoria, 2014. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:su:diva-115509.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis analyses the late-Vedic goddess Śrī and her non-personified precedent śrī ‘splendour, glory, excellence, fortune’. Śrī has not before been studied in the light of the Avestan royal splendour, xᵛarənah, and is often interpreted one-sidedly as a pre-Aryan goddess of prosperity. In contrast, this thesis locates the genealogy of Śrī’s characteristics in the Vedic goddess of dawn. The meaning of light in Vedic poetic and sacrificial terminology is highlighted, especially in the relation between royal patron and priest-poet. Śrī’s relation to terms like varcas and tejas, the “shining fame” of the hero, and epic descriptions of blazing warriors, are discussed. The nimbus in early Indian iconography is compared to descriptions of royal splendour in the texts. A subsistent theme in epics, myths and Vedic rituals is identified: the splendour won, lost and recovered by the king. This paradigm is showed to be dependent on the truthfulness, sacrificial status and asceticism of the king. A new understanding of central events in the royal consecration ritual, in the Rāmāyaṇa and the Mahābhārata are thereby offered. It is argued that a continuous and richly varied concept of royal splendour can be identified, from the Ṛgveda to the great epics, and that it is of considerable importance in the ancient Indian rulership ideology. Key words:  Royal splendour, śrī, goddess Śrī, Avestan xᵛarənah, tejas, varcas, svayaṃvara, ascetic, legitimation of power, fire, sun, dawn, Indra, Viṣṇu, rājasūya, king and priest-poet, Vedic ritual, Vedas, Mahābhārata, Rāmāyaṇa, Indo-European.

Abstract:
Our stories are not taking place in the cinema, but in the mind of viewer - that's basic idea behind this thesis. Best tools for insight into the minds of people are coming from cognitive sciences, but their perspective is often ignored by screenwriters. How does the pattern-seeking brain works? Which psychological effects can influence the first act of screenplay? What is an anchoring? What screenwriter needs to know about selling home bakery? What is theory of mirror neurons and what it can teach us about an empathy? How much information is just too much? And how viewer's attention operates? These questions and examples from author's own work attempt to describe how to look at screenwriter's craft through the cognitive perspective.

Boulos, Christine. "From Cosmogony to Anthropogony: Inscribing Bodies in Vedic Cosmogony and Samskara Rituals." Scholar Commons, 2011. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/3715.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis argues that the inscription of bodies is necessary in order to constitute the cosmos, gender and sex. A study of the Vedic cosmogonic mythologies of the deities Purusha and Prajapati illustrates the ways in which sacrifice, as a form of inscription, constitutes the cosmos by ordering and fashioning the boundaries of the bodies of the deities through differentiation and unification. An analysis of samskaras, or consecratory rites of The Law Code of Manu, show that they operate as regulatory norms in order to constitute sex and gender. But the instability and unnaturalness of the categories of gender and sex are exposed when an analysis of the samskara rituals of the bride and student show that performative acts and speech involved in their respective rites are nearly identical. This discussion of bodies, gender and sex is founded on Judith Butler's work to show how bodies, sex, and gender are also social and cultural constructs. In particular, Butler's work with performativity reveals the ways in which performative action and speech acts constitute people through their stylized and strained repetition. It is this repetition that proves to be deceiving as it creates the illusion that sex and gender are inherent to bodies. We discover that the problems maintaining the appearance of these categories is experienced in both the cosmogonic myths and with the wife and student.

Quillet, Anne-Marie. "Le Sāmavidhānabrāhmaṇa dans la tradition sāmavédique." Thesis, Paris, EPHE, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015EPHE4084/document.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis first presents the history of the discovery of the text, the textual sources, the different editions and comments on sāmavidhānabrāhmaṇa. The succeeding part of the study presents the corpus of the sāmaveda which, to date, counts hundred sāmagrantha in the most comprehensive review possible and a presentation of each work. Then a few basic concepts are revisited in order to define in a better way the power of expression of the intuitive Word in its application sāman. The ways and means the stotra is executed, this chanted praise, is decrypted unto its specific employment in the yajña and the udgātṛ in his place. If there have been justified variations between the two sam̐hitā (ṛc, sāma), these have been taken up as regards their relevancy throughout the text, since each resultant of action is triggered by the chant of the ardent one. A review of the ethics of life, the art of life, the biosphere, the societal and economic environment of everyday life that emerge from this undatable text also allows us to capture the evolution of the Indo-Iranian culture since the proto-history in its oral tradition. In the final part of this volume is presented the textual life of the sāmavidhānabrāhmaṇa. Emphasis is specially laid on its remarkable traits. The historical, philological and epistemological studies are reconsidered from their context. The volume ends with chapter twelve which deals with open questions raised by the text. The second volume presents the Sanskrit text of the three available editions of sāmavidhānabrāhmaṇa, continuous devanāgarī text, and then transliterated in reconstructed padapāṭha mode

Abstract: This work has the objective of describing and explaining some relevant aspects about the society-nature relationship, as it is understood from the Vedic philosophy perspective and the biocentrical conception. This study also intends to show an organization with religious characteristics, self-identified as a follower of the Vedic principies: "the International Society for Kríshna Consciousness" (ISKCON). Suitable links were also established between the Vedic vision and some ecologist conceptions of our days about society-nature relationship. Here we find important similarities, specially dealing with the concept of the inner value of each living being. One of the applied methodologies for the research accomplishment is the reading of some essential books of the Vedic philosophy, emphasizing the ethic aspect and philosophical-religious principies. The western classical literature about this theme was employed as secondary information, giving more importance to the texts with a closer biocentrism vision and a critical position about the contemporary society. This work makes an empiric approach of the Hare Kríshna Movement (MHK), detaching some aspects of its daily practice, which reveals its own way to understand and deal with the natural world. Values and experiences from this context are recognized of an important part of the western ecology visions in the vedic philosophy which allow us to visualize alternative ways of perceiving life, organizing the society and above ali, reflecting upon the relationship between the human-being and nature

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis combines a study of the Atharvaveda, an ancient Indian ritual tradition, with an edition, translation, and commentary of a book of hymns from its liturgy. The author defends the association of the Atharvaveda with “magic”, defined according to structural rather than descriptive criteria, by examining the historical evolution, over the course of the Vedic period (1500-500 bce), of the tradition’s role within the community of brahmin poet-priests to which it belongs, though in a marginal position with respect to the three major Vedas. Next discussed is the ritual role of the Atharvavedic hymns: by analyzing the Vedic poet’s ideological representation of the power of the word, as well as the pragmatic context of the rites marked by violent rivalries among priests, the author argues that the oft-encountered application of Austinian performative theory is not suited to the ritual interpretation of Atharvavedic hymns. These are better understood from a rhetorical angle as elements of persuasive discourse, an approach which can account for the poetic complexity reached by some hymns. The second part of this thesis is a critical edition of the forty hymns that make up the third book of the Atharvavedic collection of hymns known as the Paippalādasaṁhitā, with a first translation into English and French, as well as a detailed commentary to each hymn

This paper describes a study on the possibilities of teaching Vedic Mathematics for teaching the four operations. For this various literature sources were consulted considering three main aspects. The first of a historical-cultural, in order to gather information about the Mathematics originated from Vedic civilization, which highlight (Plofker, 2009), (Joseph, 1996), (Bishop, 1999), (Katz, 1998), (Almeida , 2009). This sought to emphasize relationships of the development of this culture with the math involved in the book Vedic Mathematics written by Tirthaji and published in 1965. In this respect the work brings notes on the history of mathematics on the development of mathematics in ancient India. The second aspect was related to teaching mathematics through research activities in the classroom, in this sense, I sought a bibliography to assist in the construction of a proposed activity to teach the four operations, based on the sutras of Vedic Mathematics, but within an investigative approach, assisting in the development of mental calculation strongly stimulated by the Vedic Mathematics Sutras. The authors were adopted (Mendes, 2006, 2009a, 2009b), Bridge (2003). The third aspect considered to search for books on teaching Vedic Mathematics, written by other authors, based on the book by Tirthaji. This revealed Vedic Mathematics textbooks adopted in schools and free courses in the UK, USA and India, all based on the book Vedic Mathematics of Tirthaji. From the bibliographical studies were prepared didactic guidelines and suggested activities for the teacher, to assist in teaching the four operations. The educational product, consisting of Chapters 4 and 5, is the body of the dissertation and consists of didactic guidelines and suggestions for activities that aim to contribute to the teachers who teach initial years of elementary school

Abstract:

This work has as goal to study the resultant daylight from International Style buildings openings in São Paulo, in Avenida Paulista and Berrini axis, analyzing illuminance distribution. The approach was done from the solar geometry and glass types point of view. The use of daylight and natural ventilation in buildings has always been part of architects challenges, nevertheless with the beginning of energetic crises during the 1970s, these issues became more important. However the concern with energy saving and use of natural resources are not usually demonstrated in the finished building. As São Paulo has a subtropical climate, the biggest concern is to avoid buildings inner heat, and the typical solution is the use of solar control glasses to reduce costs with air conditioning. Nevertheless even high performance glasses block a substantial part of daylight, beyond the heat. The compensation for low interior luminousness is done by artificial means, increasing unnecessarily buildings use and maintenance costs. Buildings from São Paulo, Brazil, Berlin and Frankfurt, Germany, were studied with local measurement and with floor modeling in Relux Professional 2010. Daylight distribution characteristics of each building were identified with the purpose of delineating potential projects improvements, focusing São Paulo daylight availability throughout the year The analysis results showed that international style façades have limitations to increase the use of daylight since the whole shell has a single treatment. Both in German and Brazilian buildings the daylight distribution followed a trendline, indicating the need of using other means to obtain illuminance levels with fewer variations between room endings

Abstract:
The Roman festival of the Lupercalia is one of the most discussed issues in the field of pre-Christian Roman religion. Hardly a year goes by without an article on the subject appearing in a major Classics journal. But the festival presents a range of issues that individual articles cannot address. This thesis is an attempt to present a modern analysis of the phenomenon of the Lupercalia as a whole, including literary, archaeological and historical evidence on the subject. The first section presents the ancient sources on the Lupercalia, and is divided into five chapters, each analysing a particular aspect of the festival: fertility, purification, the importance of the wolf and the foundation myth, the mythology of Arcadian origins, and Caesar's involvement with the Lupercalia of 44 BC. The second section places the Lupercalia in a wider context, discussing the festival's topography and the course of the running Luperci, its relationship to other lustration rituals, and its position in the Roman calendar, ending with an appraisal of the changes it underwent in late Antiquity. The third section employs methods from linguistics, anthropology and comparative religion to show that the Lupercalia involved a ritual of initiation, which was also reflected in the Roman foundation myth. The central chapter of this section discusses the methodology used in comparative Indo-European mythology, and offers a case study that parallels the god of the festival (Faunus) with Rudra of Vedic Hinduism. The last chapter considers other parallels with Indian religion, especially the relationship between flamen and brahmin. The thesis challenges a number of established theories on the subject and offers new evidence to show that the festival has Indo-European origins, but also that it played an important role throughout Roman history.

Abstract:
The purpose of this work is to study co-variation mechanisms between the head of a nominal constituent and its dependent(s) in the following ancient Indo-European languages: Indo-Iranian, Greek, Italic and Anatolian. By analysing in detail nominal and pronominal morphology within each of these groups, we shall determine which agreement classes are possible, and which ones are not, and define which role is played by desinential morphemes in the co-variation. In languages which distinguish three genders, inflectional classes are more numerous and either the head or the dependent bear the gender information, or neither, or both. However, when the dependent is a pronoun, the gender may be implied by the morphological type.We shall particularly focus on the agreement relations between head and dependent in core syntactic roles: A (transitive agent), P (patient) and U (unique participant in an intransitive construction). The marking of these roles is considerably different depending on whether the nouns are animate or inanimate. Animate nouns are marked in the same way in the four groups which are under scrutiny, whereas in the case of inanimate nouns Anatolian behaves in a drastically different way: the differential marking of A and U shows a limited capacity of inanimate nouns to become agents, which is also reflected in verbal indexation. The organisation shown by Anatolian is postulated as original in the field of Indo-European: the constraint of animation is decisive in becoming an agent

In this paper, we present a detailed design of dynamic video segmentation network (DVSNet) for fast and efficient video semantic segmentation. DVSNet consists of two convolutional neural networks: a segmentation network and a flow network. The former generates highly accurate semantic segmentations, but is deeper and slower. The latter is much faster than the former, but its output requires further processing to generate less accurate semantic segmentations. We explore the use of a decision network to adaptively assign different frame regions to different networks based on a metric called expected confidence score. Frame regions with a higher expected confidence score traverse the flow network. Frame regions with a lower expected confidence score have to pass through the segmentation network. We have extensively performed experiments on various configurations of DVSNet, and investigated a number of variants for the proposed decision network. The experimental results show that our DVSNet is able to achieve up to 70.4% mIoU at 19.8 fps on the Cityscapes dataset. A high speed version of DVSNet is able to deliver an fps of 30.4 with 63.2% mIoU on the same dataset. DVSNet is also able to reduce up to 95% of the computational workloads.

Multiplier is one of core operations of the digital signal processing and microprocessor. the multiplier in the digital circuit needs to increase the speed, decrease the area and consume less memory. So an efficient multiplier is very important in nowadays. This paper is about designing traditional Vedic multiplier through the Urdhva-Tiryagbhyam sutra. Changing the adder from the traditional Vedic multiplier which designed with the sutra, it can become two kinds of efficient Vedic multipliers. After designing 4-bit, 8-bit, 16-bit, 32-bit traditional Vedic multiplier and two kinds of efficient Vedic multipliers, their time delay and areas are analyzed through the Quartus II. According to the results of the experiment, time delay of the original efficient Vedic multiplier decreases 5.88% but the area increases 37.298%. Besides, time delay of the resolved efficient Vedic multiplier decreases 7.4% but the area increases 21.6%. If the multiplier needs to be faster on work afterwards, 4-bit and 16-bit original efficient Vedic multiplier and 8-bit, 32-bit and 64-bit resolved efficient Vedic multiplier are suggested. If the multiplier needs to be smaller, traditional Vedic multiplier is suggested. If both delay time and chip area cost are considered comprehensively, 8-bit or 64-bit resolved efficient Vedic multiplier are suggested.

Melfi, Anne. "Understanding Indian Rhetoric on Its Own Terms: Using a Vedic Key to Unlock the Vedic Paradigm." 2015. http://scholarworks.gsu.edu/english_diss/160.

Full text
Abstract:
Our “terministic screens,” learned attitudes and assumptions that screen what we see, render much data invisible and thus hinder the study of South Asian rhetorics. I hypothesized that by using two terms central to the Vedic worldview—Ṛta and levels of speech theory—as a terministic key, a touchstone, I could better identify and study Vedic rhetoric on its own terms and understand its modes and methods. This study finds that together these terms give insight into the Vedic paradigm as a whole. Chapter two explores these terms, noting that beyond audible speech and silent speech-in-thought theorized in Western rhetoric, Vedic empirical study finds two deeper levels: Paṣyantī, sensing an idea as a gestalt, and Parā, the transcendental source of speech, and includes methods for using the full range and power of speech, an embodied literacy. String theory of quantum physics echoes the Vedic cosmology of speech and its power, and illustrates the principle that drives the Vedic rhetorical modes and methods, which the next chapters explore: chapter three, the nondiscursive rhetorics of mantra, chapter four, the didactic rhetorics of dance and of the guru-disciple dynamic, and chapter five, collaborative debate toward truth, and cosmic citizenship in the governing assembly. All are driven not by persuasion but attunement with Ṛta—Truth/all the laws of nature/Brahman—an eloquence that embodies cosmic harmony. Being vs. seeming, truth vs. truthiness: Could an alternate approach to current practice advance our understanding and teaching of rhetoric and raise the level of our civic discourse?

Debipersad, Chandraprakash. "Orality and the sixteen Vedic Sanskaras." Thesis, 1995. http://hdl.handle.net/10413/6187.

Full text
Abstract:
In this dissertation an examination of oral style in the Sixteen Vedic Sanskaras with particular reference to the Naming, Marriage and Death ceremonies, has been made. Sanskaras, which originated in the Vedas, have been orally transmitted from teacher (Guru) to pupil from generation to generation. The Introduction outlines the role of Sanskaras in the life of a Hindu and its link with the ancient Vedas. The oral features that facilitate memorisation and transmission of the Mantras are mentioned. The three universal anthropological laws of Marcel Jousse are applied. The first chapter focuses on the theoretical framework of orality where important terms are defined. The contribution of Marcel Jousse and Ong are highlighted. The orality-literacy continuum is elaborated upon. The important role of memory skills as a facilitator of the transmission of knowledge is explained. The second chapter deals with the origin and the classification of Vedic literature. The role of the Sacred Fire (Yajna) in Sanskaras is emphasized. It is around this ritual fire that the ceremony and the oral traditions revolve. The fire is central to all the rites and ceremonies and the litanies constantly refer to the fire as the vehicle of transmitting the aspirations of the devotee to God. The third chapter states the reason for the choice of the topic and summarises each of the sixteen Vedic Sanskaras. This is followed by the identification of oral elements in the Naming ceremony. The evidence of orality in the marriage ceremony features in chapter four initially establishing the importance of the marriage ceremony and thereafter outlining the essential steps of a Hindu marriage. The death ceremony is described in chapter five with special reference to evidence of oral style expression therein. The conclusion emphasizes the role of orality in keeping alive the Hindu tradition and customs. It also augurs well for further research in Vedic literature.

Vedem is a name of a Czech magazine, which was secretely published in the Terezín Ghetto in 1942{--} 1944. It´s existence is connected with Valter Eisinger, a ghetto teacher, who looked after Jewish boys in so-called block L417 and who was always supporting their cultural development and their creativity. Boys at of fourteen to sixteen undertook the publishing and the magazine was coming out every Friday for almost two years. The main themes were different columns, poems and novels but also philosophical essays or critical articles. The most important persons, Petr Ginz, who was a magazines general editor, or poetist Hanuš Hachenburg, bouth died in 1944 in gas chambers. After the World War II the magazine was taken to Praque in May 1945 but the new government in Czechoslovakia rejected its publishing. The first shortend version came out in 80´s under the name ``We are children just the same: Vedem, the secret magazine of the boys of Terezín.``

Information sharing behavior plays an important role in interpersonal interaction; people exchange and disseminate specific information by communicating. Due to the popularity of social media, the efficiency of information sharing improves the effect of e-WOM, and the enterprises gradually focus on the social media marketing. Past researches have invested the antecedent of attitude toward advertisement, especially focus on contents of advertisement. Our conceptual structures was based on several literature reviews about advertising attitude, it was primarily focus on the impact of entertaining and informational advertisement on consumer’s attitude toward advertisement. In addition, this research also explores the impact of WOM on consumer’s attitude toward advertisement. Then we discussed the impact of advertising attitude on sharing intention. Finally, this research based on social networking theory to explore the impact of strength of the relationship on sharing intention. This research has proposed four hypotheses. It conducted a 2 (content: entertainment/informativeness) × 2 (WOM: positive/negative) ×2 (tie strength: strong/weak) between subjects experiment design. An experimental design was implemented by passing experimental website through Facebook and all of our samples were randomly assigned one of eight scenarios. The results shows that the advertising attitude of entertainment is significant higher than informativeness; advertising attitude of positive comment is significant higher than negative; advertising attitude will positively influence intention to share; strong tie will cause higher intention to share than weak tie. According to above results, this research provides some managerial implications. It proposes that advertiser should try their best to design entertaining advertisement in order to attract more consumers. However, if consumer cannot clearly understand the meaning of entertaining advertisement, it may cause negative comment and spread quickly through Facebook. In order to solve this question, it suggests that advertiser can use informational advertisement to spread useful information when the effect of entertaining advertisement is not as expected. This result indicates that advertiser should pay attention to the effect of WOM carefully when they dedicate to perform social media marketing.

Educators have been greatly concerned with the teaching of composition for a long time, however, nowadays, teaching composition is not confined to traditional classroom instruction and the use of reciprocal imitation skills. When we get used to looking at the world using horizontal linear thinking our sensory systems lose connection with our minds. Yet, the main sources of our creative composition are from our surroundings, be they full of character or archaic, as well as through human interaction. The purpose of this study will be to evaluate the effectiveness of a strategy for the teaching of composition using video combined with natural objects, artifacts and both verbal and non-language media modules. In addition to exploring the teaching strategies for each of the visual and audio mediums, I have combined these two into a set of "visual-writing" methods, to be used as a teaching reference, for example, story-telling, creative drama and rhythm including movement. All of which could then be expressed as performance art.

ABSTRACT Human being is inclined to seek for happiness. They used various methods to gain happiness, such as religious sacrifices, rituals and ascetic practices. During the Vedic period, sacrifices were performed to gain wealth and fortune in this very life. In the following Upaniṣadic period, objective of sacrifices was not only limited to worldly success, but also to attain liberation from transmigration. After beginning of śramaṇa tradition, sacrifices were performed only for attaining liberation. Indian history reports the existence of several śramaṇa sects. They had adopted various methods for reaching liberation while maintaining mutually varying concepts about freedom. The texts which developed from Vedic period to early Buddhism, record about these śramaṇa groups and their practicing methods. Conducting rituals and sacrifices during Vedic and post-Vedic periods, were based on the instructions given in the Vedas, Brahmaṇas, Āraṇyakas and Upaniṣads. After beginning of śramaṇa tradition, some groups practiced asceticism, at the same time, they practiced a kind of practices, called vṛta or vata. Due to the impression that torturing body would remove the karma, some practices were physically tormenting. The removing karma would bring about liberation. This was the concept of Jaina etc śramaṇas about liberation and practicing. Later, Buddhism emerged as a novel and differing tradition from other śramaṇa groups. The Buddha taught that practicing rituals and austerities, would not bring about liberation; similarly, there is no relation between removing karma and attaining freedom. In pre-Buddhist era, spiritual training was confined to morality and mental cultivation; Buddhism introduced the element of wisdom (paññā) into this two-stepped practice. Buddhist understanding of morality and asceticism differed from other śramaṇa groups. Buddhist asceticism does not harm the body. The Buddhist ascetic practice is called dhutaṅga. According to the Visuddhimagga , by practicing dhutaṅga, one can attain moral perfection. Further, following dhutaṅga is conducive to a simple life and to minimize hindrances against practice. Instead of the popular denial of asceticism, the concept of dhutaṅga suggests an approval of it in Buddhism. The significant divergence regarding asceticism in Buddhism and other śramaṇa traditions is that the former does not propose a relation between liberation from kamma and ascetic practices, whereas the latter does so. To conclude, ascetic practices (dhutaṅga) serves only up to the perfection of morality in Buddhism.
