Abstract:
Mathematics
Ph.D.
Certain fibered hyperbolic 3-manifolds admit a layered veering triangulation, which can be constructed algorithmically given the stable lamination of the monodromy. These triangulations were introduced by Agol in 2011, and have been further studied by several others in the years since. In the first part of this work, we obtain experimental results which shed light on the combinatorial structure of veering triangulations, and its relation to certain topological invariants of the underlying manifold. Among other things, our experimental results strongly suggest that typical veering triangulations are non-geometric, i.e., they cannot be realized as a union of isometrically embedded hyperbolic tetrahedra. In the second part, we prove that veering triangulations are in fact generically non-geometric.
Temple University--Theses

Reynen, Gregory Peter. "Leveraging eigenvalue veering for improved sensing with microelectromechanical systems." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/42808.

Abstract:
Energy localization in nearly periodic microsystems can be leveraged to create a new sensing paradigm that is orders of magnitude more sensitive than current resonant-frequency based systems. In this thesis, the theory which supports this claim is independently developed from a mathematical description of a two degree-of-freedom resonant system. A novel proof-of-concept microelectromechanical system (MEMS) was also designed and fabricated to support the theoretical claims. The system employed a unique resonator design with two different approaches to inducing asymmetry in the system which in turn leads to the localization of energy in one of the resonators. The system proved the resonant frequency dependence on disorder in the system and also showed that the eigenvector sensitivity to disorder was at least an order of magnitude greater than the frequency sensitivity. However, the eigenvector sensitivity could not be matched with theory. This was likely due to the time-varying nature of the coupling spring stiffness (up to a 300% change in magnitude). The coupling spring stiffness was time-varying due to the inverse cubic relationship to coupling gap distance. The gap distance changes with time since it is practically impossible to excite only the common mode, leading to a superposition with the anti-phase mode. This was partially due to the input signal displaying non harmonic tendencies. At the same time, energy localization in the system leads to different amplitudes of vibration for each resonator which will also lead to gap distance modulation. A three degree-of-freedom system was also examined theoretically with different approaches to stiffness perturbation and the resultant sensitivity expressions which can be leveraged for improved sensors were developed. The analysis shows that three degree-of-freedom systems can yield a 250% improvement over two degree-of-freedom systems which themselves are practically able to provide three to four order of magnitude improvements in sensitivity over resonant-frequency based sensors of the same size. The tools and insight needed to design for higher degree-of-freedom system are also provided in the form of the eigen-derivatives approach to calculating eigenvalue and eigenvector sensitivity to disorder in a symmetric system.

Abstract:
Variáveis: grupo; variabilidade do desvio; erro absoluto e variável; DFA; Tc; HST; DLT. O idoso RQ teve maior variabilidade do desvio (F(2,63)=4,6, p=0,01), erro absoluto (F(2,63)=16,64, p<0,0001) e variável (F(2,63)=4,5, p=0,01).
For elderly, the risk to fall increases during walking. The aim of this project is to study the risk to fall in elderly during gait without vision and its relation to spatial orientation, veering and postural control. The subjects were 27 adults (25.2±4.5 years old, 1.68±0,10 m height, 63.8±10.3 kg weight); 27 elderly AF (72.1±4.3 years old, 1.60±0.09 m height, 68.5±13 kg weight); 12 elderly RQ (72.3±6 years old, 1.57±0.08m height, 67.4±10.9 kg weight). The subjects were instructed to walk straight ahead with their eyes closed for 15 m, with an accelerometer fixed between L1 and L2. The variables were: group; target variability; absolute and variable error; DFA; Tc; HST; DLT. The elderly RQ showed the highest target variability (F(2,63)=4.6, p=0.01), absolute (F(2,63)=16.6, p<0,0001) and variable error (F(2,63)=4.5, p=0.01). Group (F(2,652)=48.9, p<0.0001) and direction (F(1,652)=444, p<0.0001) affected DFA, AP and elderly showed the highest values (p<0.0001). Group (F(2,652)=29.3, p<0.0001) and direction (F(1,652)=605, p<0.0001) affected HST, elderly RQ and ML showed the highest values (p<0.0001). Group (F(2,652)=30.8, p<0.0001) and direction (F(1,652)=178, p<0.0001) affected HLT, all elderly and ML showed the highest values (p<0.0001). The direction affects gait control, it is anti-persistent for ML direction and persistent for AP direction. The lack of visual information affects more the elderly in ML direction. The elderly RQ showed larger veering; while the others were similar. Physical activity may slow down the aging process by affecting the dynamic stability and spatial memory during gait without vision, leading to reduce the risk of fall

Abstract:
This study investigates the use and effectiveness of systems development methodologies in practice. Systems development methodologies are defined as the totality of systems development approaches, process models, methods and techniques used in an organisation. The term "deployment" is used to encompass the use of systems development methodologies, the perceived support provided by them, and their impact on both the developed system and the development process. The general purpose of this study was to investigate whether there has been a change in the use of systems development methodologies in South Africa since the study performed by Huisman (Huisman, 1999) and also whether the factors that influence the use and effectiveness of systems development methodologies have changed or remained the same as put forth in 1999. Research was conducted to determine the current situation of systems development methodologies deployment in South Africa. The results showed that development of software is performed on multiple operating systems, using multiple development platforms and multiple programming languages. The requirements and testing phases make use of techniques the most intensively. The overall intensity of use of techniques and methods was found to be very low. The relationship between the perceived maturity of an organisation and the deployment of systems development methodologies was also investigated. Organisations do not follow the maturity levels of the CMM as prescribed and skip key practices of each level. The CMM Level 3 key practices were found to have the greatest impact on the deployment of methodologies. Organisational culture and its influence on the deployment of systems development methodologies was another focal point of the analysis. In general, organisations had weak affiliations to the four culture groups as defined by the Competing Values Framework. The culture group with the most impact on the deployment of methodologies was the developmental culture which emphasises decentralisation, differentiation and flexibility. This is a significant finding since Huisman (1999) found that hierarchical culture most influences deployment of methodologies. These two organisational culture groups are complete opposites and a dramatic shift has taken place in organisations' culture since 1999. Various organisational factors were examined to establish their bearing on the deployment of systems development methodologies. The results revealed that IS department size has a negative impact on the developed system and the development process. It is also negatively related to the support aspects of methodology deployment. Maturity has a positive effect on the support for organisational alignment and horizontal use. The time dedicated to the development of new applications has a negative impact on the developed system as well as the development process. Developmental culture is positively related to the deployment of systems development methodologies. At the individual level, it was found that relative advantage, ease of use, compatibility, demonstrability, trialability and developer support all have a positive impact on the individual deployment of systems development methodologies. Uncertainty, experience in systems development and voluntariness have a negative effect on different aspects of individual deployment.
Thesis (M.Sc. Abstract:
In this last decades, honeycomb sandwich panels have been the subject of intensive researches. Indeed, their high mechanical performances combined to a low stiffness to weight ratio result in a reduced acoustic efficiency. Therefore, many designs are usually proposed to overcome this issue. Besides, different methods are developed to model more complex structures using the periodic structure theory to study the wave propagation allowing to investigate the vibroacoustic parameters. The main purpose of this thesis is to investigate the vibroacoustic multi-scale behavior of multi-layer core topology systems which consist on stacking layers of honeycomb cores leading to an impedance mismatch between layers. In addition, such structures allow to increase the design space up to now limited to standard sandwich panels made of a single honeycomb core. Therefore, it is possible to obtain many configurations keeping the mass constant with simple shifting process between layers. A parametric model is proposed allowing to extract the unit cell through the thickness of the panel and to apply the periodic structure theory. Modelling multi-layer core topology systems has been performed using the wave finite element method, and an extended method has been proposed to solve the acoustic transmission problem. The study is focused on transition frequencies, the sound transmission loss as well as veering effects and internal resonances, to finally optimize the geometrical parameters and to analyze their influence on the acoustical and mechanical performances of the structure. Although the out-of-plane compression properties of multi-layer core topology systems are reduced, it is possible to strongly improve the in-plane compression properties. These later are studied by comparing a multi-layer hexagonal core and a standard single hexagonal core. Finally, using multi-layer core topology systems and a perforated upper skin, it is possible to increase the energy dissipation occurring inside the core and thus, improve the sound absorption coefficient. Therefore, the thermo-viscous effect is considered. The acoustic behavior is similar to porous media and the Johnson-Champoux-Allard parameters are retrieved to characterize the acoustic fluid flow.An improvement of the sound transmission loss and the sound absorption coefficient is obtained in a broadband frequency and the obtained resonance frequencies can be modified. However, this leads to lower mechanical properties especially the compression modulus and the dynamic rigidity

Abstract:
The Hermit Thrush is a new breeding bird in the Southern Appalachian high-elevation mountains, having expanded its range southward over the last few decades. Here it is sympatric with the Veery, a congeneric breeding resident. In order to more fully understand why the range expansion took place and to understand more about the local ecology of the newly arrived bird, I measured several habitat variables in 30 Hermit Thrush and 24 Veery territories. Principal Components Analysis and Cluster Analysis brought to light several patterns of habitat preferences for these 2 species. Hermit Thrushes prefer territories with more leaf litter on the ground and less shrub density than Veery territories. Competition between these species should remain low, as their niche differences brought to light in this study should enable them to breed in close proximity to each other in these high-elevation mountains.

Abstract:
Otto van Veen (also called Otto Vaenius), an artist forgotten by studies on Northern painting, is mainly known for being the last master of Rubens and the author of several emblem books. In his time however, he was one of the most renowned artists of the Flemish school. The reconsideration of this painter, his influences and the impact he had on a whole generation of artists are the main topics of this dissertation. Centered on his paintings and drawings, it does not put aside its emblems, which provide invaluable keys to understand some of his allegories. Since Vaenius' production largely reflects his time, this study also focuses on the cultural and intellectual history of the Netherlands. Thus, the various networks (artistic, humanistic, princely) he was a part of have been studied in depth. The aim of this dissertation was to evaluate his pictorial contribution with regard to his intellectual background. Besides the portraits of various personalities (princes, churchmen, humanists) and the cycles glorifying the image of the prince such as Joyous Entries, the religious paintings, observing the precepts of the Council of Trent, as the mythological and allegorical paintings, have been the subject of analysis that take into account the context of production as well as the various iconographies (from diverse sources, from Antiquity to the 17th century). Combining a clear and legible painting with erudite and refined details, Vaenius' artworks have led to numerous innovations, both plastic and iconographic, that deserved to be studied

Abstract:
The objective of this work is to present is to present the main theoretical aspects and the evaluation of the van Veen and Bergervoet antenna performance, concerning its application to the determination of equivalent radiated emission sources, for the 9 kHz to 30 MHz frequency range. As a potential application, it is assumed the use of the equivalent sources, obtained based on experimental measurements, directly, on simulations of the resulting electromagnetic environments. The application of this methodology, although considered as a simplified one, may contribute to reduce the current experimental and theoretical restrictions and difficulties regarding the electromagnetic compatibility studies of electrical and electronics systems, like the on-board systems etc.

Hollingsworth, Adam Charles. "Folk Song in the Wind Band Music of Haydn Wood: Mannin Veen and a New Performing Edition of the Seafarer." Diss., North Dakota State University, 2015. https://hdl.handle.net/10365/27564.

Abstract:
Nestled between England and Ireland, one can find a tiny island called the Isle of Man, or more simply, Mann. One of its most famous musical representatives is composer and violinist Haydn Wood. In an effort to preserve and promote the fine music and culture of the Isle of Man in general, and the work of Haydn Wood in particular, the author analyzed two wind band works written by the composer. Mannin Veen draws directly on the musical heritage of Mann. The Seafarer, which has been out of print for many years, does not use Manx musical traditions directly, but is inspired by songs of the sea. It should briefly be noted here that the word ?Manx? is a reference to the linguistic and cultural traditions of Mann in the same way that ?Welsh? refers to the language and culture of Wales. As an island, the sea is a constant presence and influence in the life of its people. As such, the songs used by sailors in their work form an important element of Manx culture and tradition. Haydn Wood incorporated several traditional sea songs in The Seafarer. Therefore, through these two works, one can see the influence of folk music on Haydn Wood?s body of work. Finally, as part of an effort to bring The Seafarer back to recognition, if not prominence, the author has created a new performing edition in the hopes that it might once again be published and made available to the repertoire of wind bands everywhere.

Brannigan, Adrian. "Change in geomorphology, hydrodynamics and surficial sediment of the tauranga entrance tidal delta system." The University of Waikato, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10289/2799.

Full text
Abstract:
Historical change in the geomorphology, hydrodynamics, and surficial sediment of the tidal delta system of Tauranga Harbour are investigated with the general aim of analysing The general aims of this thesis are: firstly to analyse historical changes to inlet delta system geomorphology using historical hydrographic charts, secondly, to conduct hydrodynamic numerical modelling using historical bathymetries to access changes in peak spring flow and potential net tidal sediment transport, and thirdly, to analyse historical changes in surficial sediment and bedforms. Geomorphic change was investigated through plotting difference in bathymetry graphs and conducting cross sections taken from digisitied bathymetries obtained from historical hydrographic charts from 1852, 1879, 1901, 1927, 1954 and a modern bathymetry from 2006. Two-dimensional hydrodynamic numerical modelling was conducted to investigate the changes in peak tidal current flow and potential net sediment transport between 1852 and 2006. Changes in surficial sediment patterns were determined through completing a side scan sonar survey with associated sediment samples for ground truthing of grain size and underwater videography to gather surficial shell coverage information. This was used to produce a surficial sediment coverage map which was compared to historical studies Major geomorphological findings include that the shipping channel appears to have induced minor change in the geomorphology of the FTD but such changes are similar to those identified in the historical bathymetries of 1852, 1879, 1901, 1927, 1954 prior to dredging. Significant changes have occurred on the ETD, with the majority of the ETD showing scour of 1 m while the terminal lobe has extended seawards. This is associated with historical (since 1852) narrowing of the inlet from Panepane Point to Mt Maunganui by ~ 900 m. Hydrodynamic numerical modelling has shown a significant increase in potential net tidal sediment transport in the Cutter Channel due to dredging, while the Maunganui Roads Channel shows a reduction of net potential tidal sediment transport that is associated with the dredging of this channel. The area surrounding Panepane Point undergoes significant increases and decreases in net potential tidal sediment transport both before and after dredging Investigation of the surficial sediment patterns over the FTD and ETD from sidescan sonar and bottom samples show that between 1983 and 2007 there has been a northwards extension of the area of major shell (greater than 50 %) converge in the main ebb channel as well as reduction in major shell converge in flood tidal delta ebb shield region. The Maunganui Roads Channel changes from sitly sands to medium and fine sands.

Teyssandier, Bernard. Paris 4, 2004. http://www.theses.fr/2004PA040160.

Full text
Abstract:
The Doctrine des mœurs — illuminated book personally dedicated to Louis XIV (1646)— is (in itself) a special case in Gomberville's work (1600-1674). Its being an adaptation — the writer imitates the Quinti Horatii Flacci emblemata by Otto Van Veen (1607) — and the fact that it was published partly out of opportunity, raises a literary problem : is the operation a simple imitative process by duplication and appropriation of the engravings and the texts associatded to them ? Or does it allow us to conclude to the genuine book where the writer's very genius would be expressed ? To answer these questions, we followed Gomberville's career and considered his work as a whole. We then reconstitued the genesis of the book so as to be able to determite the part of creation but also the part of submissiveness of the writer to his model. Lastly, we tried to explain the reasons that led Gomberville to carry out a shift from the book of emblems to the livre galerie, this shift being slightly encouraged by the influence of Philostrate's Plates Peintures. Eventually, it appeared to us that the Doctrine des mœurs was in keeping with Gomberville's literary world and showed writing methods typical of a professional of literature. It also appeared that the process of reading from engravings and texts collected by Van Veen indicated project of reorientation much reflected on, and that the book, dedicated to an eight-year old king and meant for the young, showed a coherent educational intention partly based on the powerful realm of images. Those conclusions make us reconsider the original hypothesis of a beautiful book, and substantiate the thesis of o school of the image

Abstract:
88
In this thesis, tower crane which is a repeated structure comprised of modified Warren truss is analyzed for the reasons of veering and localization. And the finite element method is utilized to analyze the modes for various widths、intervals and high-bottom ratios of truss. And this research explores the veering and localization of modes. Through this study, the parameters which determine the veering and localization are difference between the two lateral moments of inertia. And it is also find out the different modes can affect the happening of veering and localization. When ratio of the two lateral moments of inertia is large, it can occur veering. Because it is the coupled structure system, the passive spatial motion is solely confined. And it occurs Localization. It’s also show that higher modes are more susceptible to localization than lower ones.

Full text
Abstract:
Curve veering is a phenomenon in which the plot of eigenvalues of a system against a system parameter sometimes results in curves that abruptly veer away from each other in a rapid but continuous manner at points where they are expected to intersect. For certain modes of vibration, the natural frequencies of rectangular plate structures obtained from an exact analysis are expected to intersect. However, approximate analysis would invariably indicate such curves veering away at those points. Occurrence of curve veering indicates the extent of approximation involved and hence it is important to understand this phenomenon from a design perspective. Any error will introduce errors in the response calculations and will result in poor design. In view of their small dimensions such approximations are critical in the estimation of natural frequencies of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS). This phenomenon is investigated for such systems subjected to electrostatic forces and assuming the existence of the Casimir forces. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)

Abstract:
103
Wind shear is the type of wind field with varying magnitude and/or direction as encountered by an airplane. Landing in horizontal wind shear has been a safety issue for all types of airplanes. The current airplane design practice and certification account only for constant crosswind. In reality, most crosswind can be classified as wind shear to a certain level. As a result, accidents or incidents, such as hard or porpoise-style (i.e. jumping) landing, oscillation in roll, runway veer-off after touchdown, etc., have been occurring. Although pilot training has been again and again emphasized, unfortunately existing training simulators for landing operation in wind shear have serious shortcomings and may lead to negative training. The latter implies the possibility that when pilots apply what are learned in simulators, the situation may get worse as pointed out by NASA researchers. It should be emphasized that these wind shear effects can also be induced by airplane motion, not just by atmospheric disturbances. System consisting of fuzzy-logic numerical models will be presented to show its effectiveness with several accident flights. Emphasis is placed on finding observable parameters for pilots to make appropriate actions. The latter involve runway veer-off in strong wind shear or crosswind. The results in simulations of fuzzy-logic numerical models have been shown to be much more realistic in wind shear than what can be expected with the existing simulators.
