Typically, soil δ¹³C and δ¹⁵N values tend to increase with depth across a wide range of ecosystems. Changes in δ¹³C with depth have been attributed to vegetation changes (i.e. C₃/C₄ shifts), but the similarity in δ¹³C and δ¹⁵N profiles suggest that microbial decomposition may play an important role. Feral goats are a continuing threat to conservation values in New Zealand. First introduced in 1773 feral goats have spread to occupy many areas of public conservation land. Organised control of feral goats by private landholders began in the early 1900s, but it was not until the mid 1930s that organised government control began. From the 1960s onwards substantial changes are evident in the philosophy governing the control of introduced herbivores in New Zealand, changes that have marked a move away from emphasising the pests per se to focusing upon the resource under threat.

Models of climate change predict that temperature will increase during the 21th century and the largest warming will take place at high northern latitudes. In addition to warming, predictions for northern Europe include increased annual precipitation and a higher proportion of the precipitation during winter falling as rain instead of snow.
