The geomorphic and geochemical characteristics of landscapes impose a physical template on the establishment and development of ecosystems. Conversely, vegetation is a key geomorphic agent, actively involved both soil production and sediment transport. The evolution of hillslopes and the ecosystems that populate them, are thus intimately coupled; their co-dependence potentially has a profound impact on the way in which landscapes respond to environmental change.

Abstract:
The application of mulch products to disturbed soil is frequently used to decrease soil erosion. The addition of polyacrylamide (PAM) has been demonstrated to reduce erosion even further. We conducted rainfall-simulator and field tests on several types of mulch, hydromulch, and erosion control blankets with varying rates of PAM to determine the relative improvements in erosion control and vegetative establishment achieved by different groundcovers and PAM. We also compared applications of granular (37 and 74 kg ha-1) and aqueous (37 kg ha-1) PAM with straw. The tests were done on 2- x 1-m soil

This project uses a Geographic Information System (GIS) as a tool for estimating soil erosion on a watershed scale. A new and key tool for managing ecosystems in North America are resource management plans based on watershed areas. Watershed management plans are a response to widespread concern about the cumulative effects of nonpoint source pollution (such as agriculture pollution) on water resource quality. The primary objective of this project was to develop a method using GIS to estimate the annual gross erosion for each of the watersheds. Sediment delivery was calculated within each of the

Abstract:
Previous field demonstration projects in metro-Atlanta have shown that seep berms, which are elongated sedimentation basins at the outlet of a disturbed land area, can provide high suspended sediment trap efficiencies with respect to coarse sediments on construction sites having drainage areas greater than five acres. Previous literature has shown that vegetative filter strips are efficient traps for fine suspended sediment in stormwater runoff. A combination of a seep berm and vegetative filter in series was studied in this thesis as an erosion control measure with quantification of its flow
