Abstract:
The purpose of this study are: 1) Knowing the nature of the veil, 2) Knowing the history of the emergence of veils in the culture of Islamic society, 3) Knowing the perspective of Islamic law on the use of veils. This type of research is a literature study (Library Research), the object in this study is the concept of veil in the perspective of sharia based on the Qur'an and hadith, the veil controversy in the culture of society. Data is collected by quoting, analyzing using the legal and historical approach methods that occur regarding the use of veils in people's lives. So the veil is a part of sharia after Islam came which was brought by the Prophet Muhammad. And it is also a culture that has occurred for generations before the existence of Islam (jahiliyah period).

Also sprach Treppie; Language and narrative as wall paper in Marlene van Niekerk's Triomf (or, ‘it's all in the mind’) In Marlene van Niekerk’s Triomf “wall paper" becomes a central metaphor for the Idea that language, narratives, ideologies, religion etc. are lies, because it leads to generalisations. These generalisations deny “reality” and are in Treppie’s words “all in the mind”. Treppie’s efforts to tear down the wall paper could be described in Nietzschean terms as resistance to Apollinian veils (especially the veils of Christian national ideology) in order to expose Dionysian chaos. It is a resistance to any form of generalisation and a distrust of language. In the end Treppie turns to language (poetic language) in order to make sense of life, to lay bare the particular In poetry (literature) an intersubjectivity is discovered which subverts the possibility to deny the specificity of individuals like the Benade’s of Triomf.

Abstract:
When Homi Bhabha discusses the problematics of signification and coding in intercultural interpretation, he questions the relationship between practices and the experience of culture. By questioning the power of codes and signifiers to fix cultural identity, Bhabha allows that the stable object of culture might be caught ‘in the disturbed artifice of its signification’, that is, ‘at the edge of experience’. This suggests to theatre and performance studies that the culturally inscribed body need not be viewed as a stable repository of displaced and deferred codes. The body may be intercepted in situations, or at moments, when signification dissolves and is reconfigured.

Abstract:
This dissertation seeks to “lift the legal veil” of Lon L. Fuller’s famous legal case of The Case of the Speluncean Explorers and Peter Suber’s The Case of the Speluncean Explorers: Nine New Opinions through the application of literary theories of meaning, interpretation, writing and truth, in particular Jacques Derrida’s Dissemination and Friedrich Nietzsche’s “On Truth and Lying in a Non-Moral Sense,” to analyze the legal and jurisprudential problems in the fictional legal cases and to trace the literary qualities of law that it has consciously renounced and unconsciously forgotten. Introducing what Peter Goodrich calls “interruption of law” (Courts of Love 5) to the reading and analysis of the two legal fictions, this dissertation reveals the way that law upholds its authority and legitimacy through language, presents alternative perspectives of understanding the nature and problems of law, illustrates the relationship of “law as literature,” and discusses the utility and significance of legal fictions and stories to the understanding of law and to the illustration of the relationship between law and literature.

Abstract:
Erik Butler’s predicates for vampirism apply in some degree to Nathaniel Hawthorne’s male protagonists who skulk in the margins of “The Birthmark,” The Scarlet Letter, and “The Minister’s Black Veil.” As metaphoric vampires who seek weak prey in order to manipulate power structures, these monomaniacal parasites assume paternalistic positions in order to control and manipulate their victims, and they disguise their exploitive and egotistic sides with idealistic and altruistic passions for science and religion. This thesis explores how Hawthorne’s protagonists’ corrupt and consuming spirits echo traditional vampiristic characteristics.

Abstract:
This study examines the theme of betrayal in three different literary works.Betrayal is seen in different forms in the three novels. In the first chapter of the thesis, the protagonist&rsquo
s betrayal to his friend in the English writer Joseph Conrad&rsquo
s Under Western Eyes is evaluated in terms of the reasons, process, and results. Psychological analysis of the character that betrays is made. In the second chapter adultery is examined in The Painted Veil by Somerset Maugham, who is another English writer. The reasons for the adultery the woman commits, her guilty conscience after the adultery, and the enlightenment process are discussed. In the third chapter, two characters&rsquo
betrayal to their ideology is examined with the background set as Turkey in the 1970s in Bir Dü

n Gecesi by Adalet Agaoglu, who is a Turkish writer. Psychological status of the characters is studied based on their feelings at a wedding night with their reasons to have deviated from their political views.Themes such as lack of love and dilemma, which collect the three novels under the same title, are particularly examined.

Abstract:
AbstractVascular anomalies is a diverse group of disorders involving the vasculature (arteries, veins and lymphatics). These lesions in the head and neck can present since birth or later in life causing functional, cosmetic and bleeding problems. They can sometimes co-exist with a wide array of other pathologies and components of various syndromes. The different types, classifications, clinical features, imaging characteristics, treatment options and complications will be discussed in detail, with accordance to guidelines and principles in current literature. The author has designed a widely accepted anatomical classification for surgical management of these complex lesions, which is discussed in depth. Tailoring therapy depending on the anomaly is the key to successful treatment. Hemangiomas tend to proliferate and then involute , hence treated with systemic medication or alternate therapy for residual lesions. Vascular Malformations essentially would require aggressive management with surgery or embolisation and surgery. The concept of ‘corset suturing’ is explained and described, which is thought to be the ideal management for large venous malformations.

Full text
Abstract:
Antonio Somaini questions the veils, mists, and fogs that appear in the late works of J.M.W Turner, suggesting that here the canvas gains the status of an ‘atmospheric screen’. Drawing on the etymology of the term ‘medium’, Somaini probes the re-emergence in the nineteenth century of an environmental media concept in relation to the rediscovery of the environmental nature of the screen. Their parallel genealogies, he suggests, intersect in Romantic landscape painting as well as in German Naturphilosophie and Romantic Literature, each of which might be situated within a line of descent running from Aristotle’s notions of metaxy to mediaeval theories of media diaphana. The controversies over Turner’s canvases, exemplified by the debate between Ruskin and Hazlitt, are a potent reminder of the unsettled status of the atmosphere at a moment when the optical conception of the screen was not yet dominant.

Abstract:
Vascular impedance in human pulmonary circulation is analyzed by the fluid dynamic approach. A model representing the entire system of pulmonary circulation is constructed based on experimentally measured morphometric and elasticity data of the vessels. The pulmonary arteries and veins are considered as elastic tubes. Their impedance follows Womersley’s theory and electric analogue. The “sheet-flow” theory is employed to describe the flow in capillaries and thus a microvascular impedance matrix is derived. The input impedance at the main pulmonary artery is calculated under both zone 3 and zone 2 conditions. The results are compared with available experimental data in the literature.

Abstract:
The safety of oil and gas pipelines has increasingly considered day by day to their vulnerability. Pipelines play a very critical role in the transportation of oil and natural-gas. As they have become the veins of oil industries, the productive design and analysis became more important. This made them more vulnerable to terrorist attacks. Although it is impossible to design pipelines to withstand any conceivable damage due to external (terrorist attacks, seismic effects) and internal effects (design and manufacturing defects), it is possible to improve the performance of pipelines. By understanding the design criteria, it saves lots of money and more over human lives and also protects the product in pipelines, which cannot be recovered and which is more and more scares day by day. This research aims: 1) to understand the different types of pipeline damages, reasons for their occurrence and their effects on the pipelines, such as mechanical damages, material defects, cracks, manufacturing defects, 2) to understand the explosions in pipelines, internal or external explosions and seismic distress, 3) to do research and literature review in analytical and numerical methods which allow researching the influence of shock waves (explosions, seismic), 4) to develop description of experimental research of pipelines subjected to shock waves (explosions, seismic), 5) to establish an effective methodology (develop mathematical model) to study the risk management in pipeline exploitation which can be subjected to such conditions like shock waves (caused by explosions, seismic, as well as mining activities) on pipeline systems (buried, on surface, or underwater), and 6) to establish criteria for risk management. This paper includes a review of the related literature covering the first two goals.

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
Blunt head impacts cause relative motion between the brain and skull. This increases the normal and shear stresses in the (skull/brain) interface region, which leads to the rupture of cerebral blood vessels and in particular bridging veins. Mechanical properties of meningeal layers, in particular, subarachnoid space (SAS) trabeculae and the pia mater are not well established in the literature and could have a wide range depending on an individual. In our previous studies, knowing that SAS trabeculae and pia mater are collagen-based structures, these mechanical properties have been estimated using the properties of similar collagen based tissues. However, recent study Xin Jin et al. (2008), suggests that the mechanical properties of trabeculae and the pia matter are significantly less than a collagen-based tissue. Therefore, the goal of this study is to investigate the effect of the mechanical properties of these tissue on the stress and strain of the neighboring tissues when the head is subjected to a blunt impact. Specifically, the objectives of this study is to determine the stress/strain changes of the cerebral blood vessels as a function of the mechanical properties of the SAS trabeculae and pia mater, when the loading and the boundary conditions of the local model are kept the same. Note that the variation of the properties of these tissues affects the failure of cerebral blood vessels which leads to traumatic brain injury.

Abstract:
Cancer chemotherapy is the treatment of cancer using drugs that kill the cancer cells, when the drugs are administered either orally or through veins. The drugs are delivered according to a schedule so that a particular dosage of drug level is maintained in the body. The disadvantage of these drugs is that they not only kill the cancer cells but also kill the normal healthy cells. The role of optimal control in chemotherapy is to maintain an optimum amount of drug level in the body so that only cancer cells are killed and hence the effect of drug on the healthy cells is minimized. Three different mathematical models for cancer growth are considered: log-kill hypothesis, Norton-simon model, and Emax model. Two different cost functions are considered for constrained and unconstrained optimal control, respectively. An open loop optimal control strategy has been reported in the literature. In this paper, a closed-loop optimal control strategy is addressed using all the three models and for both the cases of constrained and unconstrained drug delivery. For the unconstrained case the original nonlinear model has been linearized and the closed loop design is obtained by using matrix Riccati solutions. On the other hand, for the constrained case the original nonlinear model has been used to obtain closed loop optimal control using bang-bang strategy. Final simulation results show the advantages of closed loop implementation in terms of simpler and elegant controller design and incorporating the effect of current state variations.

Abstract:
The prerequisite for the study was the spread of views in the academic literature that the category of public welfare, without accounting for concretising factors, was a void abstraction, and that in Russia, public welfare was seen as the dominant principle over the individual. The main purpose of the study is to analyse the content of the term ‘the welfare of each and everyone’ in Russian legal theory. The author uses the methods of conceptual history and intellectual history to analyse the concept of ‘the welfare of each and everyone’ in the works of pre-revolutionary authors and the relationship between the concepts of ‘the welfare of each and everyone’ and ‘the common good’. The author determined that: ‘public welfare’ can be classified as fiction, purpose, method, interest and balance, depending on the context of use and semantic scope. The term ‘the welfare of each and every one’ became theoretically meaningful (as an objective, method, and interest), and was enshrined in law in Russian Empire in the XVIII -early XX centuries. The term was understood as achieving the common good, preserving the good of everyone and the reduction of public harm. Twentyfirst century Russian legal theory uses the related notion of ‘public welfare’, understood as a fiction, a goal, a method, an interest, a balance. The main findings of the study suggest that today the ‘public welfare’ is reduced to bringing benefits to anyone and everyone (D. I. Dedov), which is close to the historical understanding of ‘the welfare of each and every one’. The public welfare theory incorporates progressive elements such as the veil of ignorance, the win-win principle, and shapes institutions, resources, practices and formulates the issue of the emergence of a new generation of human rights.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This paper investigates energy harvesting from arterial blood pressure via the piezoelectric effect for the purpose of powering embedded micro-sensors in the brain. Blood flow is highly dynamic and arterial blood pressure varies, in the average human blood vessel, from 120 mm of Hg to 80 mm of Hg and we look at transduction of this pressure variation to electric energy via the piezoelectric effect. We propose two different geometries for this purpose. Initially, we look at the energy harvested by a cylinder, coated with PVDF (Polyvinylidene fluoride) patches, placed inside an artery acted upon by blood pressure. The arrangement is similar to that of a stent which is a cylinder placed in veins and arteries to prevent obstruction in blood flow. The governing equations of the harvester are obtained using Hamilton’s principle. Pressure acting in arteries is radially directed and this is used to simplify the governing equations. Specifically, radial pressure directed on the inner wall of the cylinder is assumed to excite only the radial breathing mode of vibration. Using this, the transfer function relating pressure to the induced voltage across the surface of the harvester is derived and the power harvested by the cylindrical harvester is obtained for different shunt resistances. However, the natural frequency of the radial breathing mode (RBM) is found to be very high and the harvested power at the frequencies of interest (3 Hz – 20 Hz) is very low. To decrease the natural frequency, we propose a novel streaked cylinder design that involves cutting the cylinder along the length, transforming it to a curved beam with an opening angle of 360 deg.. The governing equations corresponding to a circular curved beam, with PVDF patches on top and bottom surfaces, are derived using Hamilton’s principle and modal analysis is used to obtain the transfer function relating radial pressure to induced voltage. We validate the derived transfer function by evaluating the harvested power for a beam with very large radius of curvature; in which case, the curved beam becomes a straight beam and the harvested power is compared with the same for a straight beam (which exists in the literature). Further, we conduct design analyses and obtain the power as the geometric parameters of the harvester are varied for the purpose of optimizing the dimensions of harvester for maximal power generation. The power harvested by the harvester, at lower frequencies is deemed to be satisfactory.
