Abstract:

Velamen radicum, a dead tissue at maturity, characterizes the roots of many epiphytes. Apart from a role in water and nutrient uptake, protection against excessive radiation in the upper forest canopy has also been suggested, but this function has never been critically assessed. To test this notion, we studied the roots of 18 species of Orchidaceae and Araceae. The velamen radicum, a rhizodermis that consists of dead cells at maturity, is often described as typical for epiphytic aroids. Such claims are surprising on two grounds: (1) there are hardly any data on this trait for aroids and (2) the link between a velamen and epiphytic growth has recently been challenged in general. Paenibacillus velaei, sp. nov. is a soil bacterium capable of producing an unusually large amount of exopolysaccharide (EPS). The EPS contains glucose, mannose, galactose and fucose in a molar ratio of 4:2:1:1. The molecular weight of the EPS is higher than 2x106. The viscosity of 1% EPS is 1300 cP when measured at a shear rate of 1 sec-1. Abstract:

INTRODUÇÃO: O quilotórax é o tipo de derrame pleural caracterizado pelo acúmulo de linfa. Usualmente, os sintomas são insidiosos, mas quando ocorre um acúmulo rápido de líquido, pode gerar taquipnéia, taquicardia, hipotensão e choque. O diagnóstico é feito a partir da dosagem de triglicérides no líquido pleural obtido na toracocentese maior que 110 mg/dl. No que concerne à fisiopatologia, o quilotóraxocorre devido a obstrução e/ou dificuldade no escoamento da linfa e laceração do ducto torácico, tendo como umas das principais etiologias as neoplasias, infecções, trauma e trombose venosa. Abstract Materials are the key to develop advanced ultra-supercritical (A-USC) steam generators. Operating at temperature up to 760°C and sustained pressure up to 4500 psi. Pressure vessel and piping materials may fail due to creep, oxidation, and erosion. Valves are particularly subjected to loss of function and leakage due to impermeant of the sealing surfaces.
