Abstract:
This work was aimed at understanding mechanisms of importance for the design of weight-efficient armour against long-rod projectiles (LRP) and shaped charge (SC) warheads. The focus was on how to achieve effective mechanical disturbances on the threat before it hits the target. Methods were developed for laboratory tests in full and reduced scale, and for registration and evaluation of the fast and violent events involved. For numerical simulations, the Xue-Wierzbicki fracture model was implemented and used for the LRP in order to allow fractures due to shear load without extensive damage of t

Abstract:
A method for numerical simulation of train induced track vibration and wave propagation in subgrade has been proposed. The method uses a mass to simulate the bogie of a train and considers the effect of rail roughness. For this method, rail roughness is considered as a randomly generated signal and a filter is used to block the undesired components. The method predicts the particle velocity around the track and can be applied to many kinds of railroad trackbeds including traditional ballast trackbed and modern Hot mix asphalt (HMA) trackbed. The flow of a liquid film over a rapidly rotating horizontal disk has many applications inmedical, industrial, and engineering fields. A specific example is the heat and mass transfer processes between expanded liquid and surrounded dense gas. Diferent wave regimes of a liquid film depend on a flow conditions such as the properties of a liquid, its initial speed, parameters of environment, etc. Therefore, experimental investigation of the film flow over a spinning disk is needed to both validate theoretical predictions and establish methods for fluid flow monitoring. This thesis presents novel v

This thesis describes the development of a novel tomographic imaging system which can measure the concentration and velocity profiles in two-phase oil/gas flows. Two-phase flow measurement is a problem of great strategic and commercial importance to the oil industry. For example, an oilwell seldom produces just oil; there is often a significant quantity of gas and/or water present and it is very important to know how much of each is being produced. Unfortunately, this turns out to be a very demanding: task, particularly when the components have significantly different densities as in oil/gas f

Milling is a common unit operation in industry for the purpose of intentional size reduction. Considerable amount of energy is consumed during a grinding process and much of the energy is dissipated as heat and sound, which often makes grinding into an energy-intensive and highly inefficient operation. Despite many attempts to interpret particle breakage during a milling process, the grindability of a material in a milling operation remains aloof and the mechanisms of particle breakage are still poorly understood. Hence the optimisation and refinement in the design and operation of milling are
