Abstract:
In South Africa, the transition from an apartheid regime to a popularly elected government in 1994 made possible wide-ranging changes in power relations in every sphere of human interaction, including language. Under the new political dispensation, there are 11 official languages (listed in order of numbers of speakers): Zulu, Xhosa, Afrikaans, Tswana, North Sotho, English, South Sotho, Tsonga, Swati, Ndebele, and Venda. They replace English and Afrikaans, formerly the 2 official languages.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
This article seeks to evaluate the level and type of changes in Sesotho as a result of language contact in multilingual Gwanda South, Zimbabwe. It will indicate choices that speech communities have and reasons for specific language preferences. It looks at the multilingual situation in Gwanda South and the language choices that the community is free or forced to make. It seeks to indicate how language contact could result in language shifts in supposed multilingual communities that could be affected by other languages appearing and being used for essential social, political, religious, and administrative purposes. Survey data reveals that Gwanda South has the following languages: Sesotho, Ndebele, Chi-Jahunda, Venda, and English. Sesotho is the home language while Ndebele has come through administrators and its being the original national language for Matabeleland South. Chi-Jahunda is a primary/ indigenous variety for Gwanda South. Attention is centered on the apparent move from the home language to other varieties that have moved into the district over time. The main worry is the apparent demise of the home language due to both internal and external forces. While there might be a high level of retention of the language in the home domain, the use of languages that are spoken by the few combined with English as the official language tends to interfere with the retention and continued use of Sesotho. This suggests that language contact leads to a shift influenced by a speaker’s inability to preserve their mother language by switching to dominant languages as mediums at home and school once such languages have been learned and mastered.

Abstract:
ABSTRACTA remarkable, almost fur-like “indumentum” of velvety “hairs” (sometimes referred to as “fungi”) occurs on the roots (and to a lesser extent also on the trunk) ofLannea schweinfurthiivar.stuhlmanniiand is known asvhulivhadzain the Venda language (Tshivenḓa). The hairs are traditionally used by the Venda people (Vhavenḓa) of the Limpopo Province of South Africa, for various biocultural purposes. A detailed anatomical study of the origin, structure and development of these unusual “hairs” showed that they are of peridermal origin and develop from dense clusters of phelloid cells which are scattered within the stratified phellem. These cells are capable of considerable radial elongation thus forming hair-like radial files of elongated phelloid cells. The “hairy” patches on the bark may also develop from lenticels which become hypertrophied. These clusters of phelloid cells resemble the hyperhydric tissue which is reportedly formed in periderm of stems exposed to a water-saturated environment in some plant species. The formation of hyperhydric-like tissue in roots and stems ofL. schweinfurthiivar.stuhlmanniioccurs, however, under relatively arid conditions. Since this tissue contains large intercellular spaces, it may also be regarded as a specialized type of aerenchymatous phellem. The adaptive significance, if any, of the phelloid “hairs” remains unknown.

Abstract:
Among Vhavenḓa, domba is an indigenous initiation institution that both men and women attend. This is a unique indigenous institution which prepares young men and young women together in order to understand the importance of marriage, child-birth and other aspects of life. And as a result, this paper outlines the use of the language variety associated with this institution as well as its educational significance among the Vhavenḓa. The use of this variety, when domba is in session, plays an important role in educating young men and women to be responsible for their families and properties. In addition, cultural values and norms which are no longer observed today in many African communities are also taught by this institution. Although this variety promotes safe sex and sex only after marriage, it has also served as a breeding ground for a gendered variety of the language because it advocates that men and women should not be treated equally. Despite some difficulties, an understanding of the role played by the domba language variety in education by the Venda people and of the education received by initiates in this institution will allow us to recapture the space we need to reinvent ourselves, and to fashion knowledge systems and strategies to ensure a responsible adult life. This will empower us to become independent people capable of producing a value system worthy of our dignity.

Abstract:
Professionalism in English phrases is an indispensable tool for the enhancement of fluency and accuracy in communication. However, English second language learners face redundancy challenges apropos an effective use of phrases. The research investigated strategic intervention for selected deviant English phrases at the University of Venda. A quantitative approach was adopted because data could be analysed mathematically and statistically. Using probability sampling, 35 Level Three English students registered in the 2022 academic year at this university were selected to participate in this research. Further, a convenience technique was employed to select the respondents who were readily approachable and had been studying English for more than twelve years. A pre-test study was conducted on the respondents who were not part of the target group to plan and modify the main research. After a treatment process was followed, the research revealed that respondents were incompetent in the use of English phrases. Nonetheless, post-test results established that respondents performed preternaturally after the utilisation of the ‘language shadowing methods’. Frequent practice in the use of this technique, therefore, cannot be ignored if one wishes to improve not only the art of public oration but also the image of the person's academic literacy.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The Little School. Tales of Dissapearance and Survival is the title of the testimonial book by Alicia Partnoy, who was incarcerated by the military government in Argentina during the decade of the 70s. In this book, Partnoy tells her own experience in prison and that of other victims of the regime. This article suggests that the work of Partnoy includes rhethorical tools such as the use of childish language and the insertion of symbols like a piece of bread and a blindfold covering the prisoners’ eyes, which render the reader closer to the prisoners’ perceptions and feelings. In this way, Partnoy’s account enables the reader to explore by himself the prison experience. The author achieves an identification of the reader with the prisoners, as well as negative feelings towards the oppressors.

Full text
Abstract:
The institution of traditional leadership represents the early form of societal organisation. It embodies the preservation of culture, traditions, customs and values. This paper gives a brief exposition of the impact that the pre-colonial and colonial regimes had on the institution of traditional leadership. During the pre-colonial era, the institution of traditional leadership was a political and administrative centre of governance for traditional communities. The institution of traditional leadership was the form of government with the highest authority. The leadership monopoly of traditional leaders changed when the colonial authorities and rulers introduced their authority to the landscape of traditional governance. The introduction of apartheid legalised and institutionalised racial discrimination. As a result, the apartheid government created Bantustans based on the language and culture of a particular ethnic group. This paper asserts that the traditional authorities in the Bantustans of Transkei, Bophuthatswana, Venda and Ciskei seemed to be used by the apartheid regime and were no longer accountable to their communities but to the apartheid regime. The Bantustans’ governments passed various pieces of legislation to control the institution of traditional leadership, exercised control over traditional leaders and allowed them minimal independence in their traditional role. The pattern of the disintegration of traditional leadership seemed to differ in Transkei, Bophuthatswana, Venda and Ciskei. The governments of these Bantustans used different political, constitutional and legal practices and methods to achieve this disintegration. The gradual disintegration and dislocation of the institution of traditional leadership in these four Bantustans led to the loss of valuable knowledge of the essence and relevance of the institution of traditional leadership. One of the reasons for this anomaly emanated from the fact that undemocratic structures of government were established, commonly known as traditional authorities. More often than not these traditional institutions were mere puppet institutions operating on behalf of the Bantustan regime, granted token or limited authority within the Bantustan in order to extend the control of the Bantustan government and to curb possible anti-apartheid and anti-Bantustan-system revolutionary activity within traditional areas. The advent of the post-apartheid government marked the demise of apartheid and the Bantustan system for traditional leaders and the beginning of a new struggle for the freedom of the traditional authorities. This paper highlights changes brought about by the new constitutional dispensation in the institution of traditional leadership. The author demonstrates that the primary objective of the democratic government of South Africa in this regard is to transform the institution of traditional leadership and re-create the institution completely in line with the values and principles of the 1996 Constitution and democracy. The post-apartheid order rejects the old order as far as it is sexist, racist, authoritarian and unequal in its treatment of persons. All of the rules, principles and doctrines of the institution of traditional leadership apply in the new dispensation only in so far as they are rules, principles and doctrines that would survive the scrutiny of the present society when measured against their compliance with the requirements of human dignity, equality and freedom. The government has enacted democratic legislation intended to change the institution of traditional leadership and make it consistent with the 1996 Constitution. The institution of traditional leadership is obliged to ensure full compliance with the constitutional values and other relevant national and provincial legislation. The right to equality, including the prohibition of discrimination based on gender and sex, has an important impact on the institution of traditional leadership. For example, under the new constitutional dispensation women may become traditional leaders in their traditional communities, which is contrary to the old and long observed African customary rule of male intestate succession, which excluded women from succession to the position of traditional leadership. One of the remarkable features of the transformation of traditional leadership in South Africa is that gender equality has been progressively advanced. The inclusion of women in traditional government structures adds democratic value and credibility to the institution of traditional leadership, which for many years remained essentially male-dominated. Abstract:
This research examined the media impact on Vedda people in Dambana Village, Monaragala district, in the Uva province in Sri Lanka. The Vedda community is also known as Adivasi (Original inhabitants) or Wannilaeto, indigenous people in Sri Lanka. The Vedda people of Dambana are also in the process of modernization failing to maintain their identity. Some of them hide their identity by absorption into neighboring Sinhala or Tamil communities. Wannilaeto have a community radio station called Dambana Radio but it is not fully operational and the programs do not match their needs. The number of listeners is at a minimum level. The Dambana Vedda community has access to media. The younger generation has cellular phones and Tablet PCs. One hundred Vedda members have been interviewed onsite. Snowball sampling method implied. Snowball sampling method (the sample grows like a rolling snowball) is also known as network sampling. It is a non-probability sampling. Some of the Vedda people preferred to use their mother tongue (Wanniyalaththo language) and was assisted by a translator from the Vedda community. The research found that media has become one of the main factors influencing the Vedda people of Dambana, especially the younger generation. They change their lifestyles willfully and quickly adopt to alien cultures, especially, neighboring Sinhalese culture.

Abstract:
The recovery of pieces of information that are not linguistically expressed is a constant feature of the process of language comprehension. In the processing literature, such missing information is generally referred to as “gaps”. Usually, one resolves gaps by finding “fillers” in either the sentence or the context. For instance, in Peter seemed to be upset, Peter is really the subject of being upset but appears as surface subject of seems. Sometimes constituents move, leaving gaps behind. Various Romance languages such as Spanish or Italian have a grammatical particle se/si, which, as it is extremely ambiguous, licenses different sorts of gaps. In Spanish, se can encode at least reflexive, impersonal, and passive meanings. In an eye-tracking experiment we contrast reflexive structures containing postverbal subjects with impersonal structures with no subjects (GAP se vendó apresuradamente el corredor/“the runner bandaged himself hurriedly” vs. GAP se vendó apresuradamente al corridor/“(someone) bandaged the runner hurriedly”). In a second manipulation we contrast the presence of an extra argument with se-passives (GAP se vendó el tobillo el corredor/“the runner bandaged his ankle” vs. GAP se vendó el tobillo al corridor/“the runner's ankle was bandaged”). Our comparisons involve contrasting standard transitive structures with nonstandard word order (postverbal subject and a preverbal subject gap) against inherently complex and less habitual structures such as impersonals (with no subject) or se-passives (with subjects in canonical object position). We evaluate the minimal chain principle (de Vincenzi, 1991), according to which displacement is costly because it entails complex (derivational) “chains” that must be undone before phrasal packaging can commence. We show the minimal chain principle to be essentially correct when contrasting more complex but more frequent structures with less complex but less frequent structures. A noteworthy feature of this research is that the gaps appear before the fillers in the structures that we analyse.

Abstract:
Drogas. Políticas. Sociedade.Abstract: This paper is the result of a larger postdoctoral research. It aims to develop an analysis in the sense of presenting a perspective of approach on the drugs according to Popular Education. In this way, methodologically, it is based on two methodological assumptions: 1) a review of literature in Portuguese, Spanish, French and English; 2) an empirical study carried out in Uruguay, in Montevideo, in the context of implementation of the decriminalization and sale policy of cannabis, focusing, among other aspects, on its educational dimension. Some of its results are, for example: 1) Popular Education’s approach about drugs must carry out a socio-historical scrutiny of them in the context of the relationship society and social deviance; 2) Popular Education requires a discursive change in the way of referring to people who use drugs, to overcome the stigmatized language; 3) Socio-educational work in the field of the harm reduction actions, according to Popular Education, demands interdisciplinary knowledge. Among the conclusions, it is affirmed that the study of the drugs must be analytically situated in the social plane, instead of being in the sphere of individual factors, which tend to define its use as a strictly personal pathology. Abstract:
Thirukkural, one of the prominent Tamil Literatures, written 2000 years ago, has great importance till date as it emphasizes everyday virtues of the individuals. As per Tamil Literature, it belongs to the class of ‘Kural Venba’ which is a subdivision of ‘Venba’ and is regarded as one of the poetic styles of Tamil Language. This research primarily aims on the validation of entered Thirukkural by checking the syntactical correctness of ‘Kural Venba’. It uses ‘Transliteration’ methodology to convert the user given thirukkural into an intermediate form. Then, it processes the intermediate form to segregate the words (seer and thalai) into different asai as per the Yaapilakkanam known as Alagiduthal, compares it with the pre-defined norms of ‘Kural venba’ and produces the result. At any point of time, if the user input doesn’t qualify a criterion, the program outputs a warning accordingly and gets terminated.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Palavras-chave: história do livro; modernismo; editores.Abstract: This article analyzes texts and paratexts of the Brazilian literature of the 1920s, in order to characterize it as a moment of decisive transformations in the history of the Brazilian book. In the period, one observes a process of nationalization of book production, in line with a progressive nationalization of language and themes. With the significant increase in the number of Brazilian publishers working in the publication of literature, the links between different agents of the process of production, sale and reception of books have become closer, consequently providing new forms of professionalization of intellectuals. Cases such as the ones of Benjamin Costallat and Monteiro Lobato are presented and analyzed in order to make more understandable their actions as writers-publishers. For such an analysis to be possible, it is necessary to pay attention to paratextual elements (prefaces, epigraphs, covers) present in old editions of the studied books, as well as personal documents. Among the books mentioned are Urupês (1918), by Lobato; Histórias e Sonhos (1920), by Lima Barreto; Fim (1921), by Medeiros and Albuquerque; Mademoiselle Cinema (1923), by Benjamin Costallat; and Amar verbo intransitivo (1927), by Mário de Andrade. Abstract:

Abstract:
Building on the current scientific and literary-didactic discourse, this paper has as its subject the analysis of the group discussion and the categorization of the so-called functional literary competences which students of German language studies should master. The focus of dealing with literary texts in the eighth semester of the German language studies is, apart from their literary nature, primarily their socio-political impulses and influence on the transfer from the world of the text to the world around us. By comparing the two novels, The Navel of the World by Venko Andonovski and Dobri dani by Marko Dinić, and by means of their productive treatment in the classroom, we will see whether literary texts contribute to the development of the social-critical engagement of the recipients. Along with observing and defining the didactics of literature as an applied science and a part of the literary social system, qualitative scientific methodology was applied in this research. After the semi-structured group discussion procedure, the obtained data were analyzed and categorized. The research questions supported by theoretical postulates important for this paper arose from teaching practice, while methodological examples and research results bring it back to that practice.

Abstract:
Latin humiliatio and Old Polish pokora. The influence of Polish on Latin in the Middle Ages. Summary: The paper discusses cross-linguistic interference observed while studying Latin humiliatio, humilitas (and additionally homagium, venia) and Old Polish pokora, referring to the statutory and customary legal practice of ‘public humiliation of the culprit, most often the murderer, and their request for forgiveness’. The research focuses on the linguistic and socio-cultural changes that made the juridical meaning of humiliatio, humilitas emerge. The paper offers a diachronic analysis of the development of a set of words that share the root humil*, followed by a synchronic study of the vocabulary attested in Old Polish, Old Czech, and in Medieval Latin used in other countries. The article discusses linguistic and socio-cultural factors that might have contributed to the development of the juridical sense of humiliatio, humilitas in Medieval Latin in Poland, and concludes with a hypothesis that the described sense emerged as a calque of one of the senses of the Polish word pokora.

Abstract:
Novodobni bralci so vselej čutili nelagodje ob adulacijah v čast Avgusta in cesarske družine, ki smo jim priča v Ovidijevi izgnanski poeziji.
