Abstract:

Abstract:
Thomas Mann’s novella, Death in Venice (Der Tod in Venedig, 1912), presents a story of an artist, Gustav von Aschenbach, suffering from the writer’s block who travels to Venice to look for inspiration and where he eventually finds his death. In the meantime, he suffers from depression strengthened by feats of febrile listlessness, pressure in the temples, heaviness of the eyelids that make discontent befall him. The putrid smell of the lagoon hastens his departure, but a strange coincidence makes him change his mind. He returns to the hotel drawn by the enthrallment for the young lad, Tadzio, he had spotted there. Wandering through the streets of Venice, he ignores the health notices in the city, only later learning that there is a serious cholera epidemic in Venice. But he does not escape, nor does he warn the boy’s family of the fatal danger. He dies in his beach chair, looking at the boy on the beach. The aim of this paper is, therefore, to explore the relationship between travel and disease as juxtaposed with a growing passion for a youth, unmistakably, a sign of life affirmation in a sickly body and burnt-out mind.Thomas Mann’s novella has been a subject of extensive commentaries and criticisms for over a century since it was published in Germany, first, in serial form in 1912 and 1913 and, then when it was translated into the French and English in the 1920s, thus introducing it to the rest of the world. The peak of critical interest in Mann’s oeuvre may be pinpointed to the 1970s when Luchino Visconti’s film, Morte a Venezia (1971), was released and Benjamin Britten’s opera composed and first staged (1973).

Discoveries in the realm of geography and astronomy required a re-evaluation of the place occupied by women and men in the new conception of the universe. This essay intends to discuss the mythical Venice of Shakespeare’s imagination, a symbolic landscape, less physical and concrete than ideological. In this sense, this paper turns to Foucault’s concept of heterotopia to illustrate how the anxieties of an epoch were projected in the representation of the city. Here, jurisprudence is of central importance.

Abstract:
This thesis discusses the function and perception of the Venetian (or Venetan) tongue from a sociolinguistic diachronic perspective.   Venetian, spoken by over 6 million people in 7 countries, in an Italian context is referred to as an Italian dialect. Though defined as language in Brazil, by the Veneto region in Italy and by several international organizations (amongst them UN and UNESCO), the Italian State does not confirm its status.   Venetian appeared as a written language in the XII century, anticipating the earliest texts in Italian itself in the Florentine form. From the ninth century it was spread by Venetian merchants and by the Venetian Republic itself to the eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea, from Istria down to modern day Albania, and later on even further, to the Greek archipelagos and the ports of the Holy land. The expansion of the "Serenissima" in the Italian hinterland led to the homogenisation of the language in the area that forms the base of the modern "Veneto" spoken today.   Venetian was the spoken language in all contexts in the Republic, and was used in official acts, such as the Statuti Veneti, the Mariegole and within the diplomacy. Though the official use of written Venetian was gradually out conquered by Italian from the sixteenth century, it remained the sole spoken language in all state organs until the fall of the Republic in 1797 and was used by the diplomacy of the Ottoman Empire in its contacts with European countries.    After the annexation of Veneto to Italy in 1866, the Italian State has actively combated the use of Venetian (and even forbidden it during the fascist regime), but nevertheless, today Venetian is one the most vigorous of the Italian "dialects": at least 72% of the inhabitants in the Veneto region use the language actively and a recent study demonstrates that as many as 65% of the foreigners living in the region learn the language because of professional or social necessity.   In a diachronic perspective the Venetian tongue can hardly be considered an Italian dialect, not only because of its autonomous development from Vulgar Latin or its different grammar and morphosyntax, but also because of its function and perception: used as an official language not only by the Serenissima, but also by other states, and because of its literacy that for centuries has invented and followed autonomous traditions and created notable works in poetry, theatre, prose and science.

Abstract:
The present dissertation focuses on an unfinished project for the construction of an inland waterway between Padua and Venice, in northern Italy. The history of this channel is analysed in the context of the general debate for the development of a waterway network in the Padanian plain. The project of reconstructing and enlarging the existing ancient channels for the development of a modern river transport system was born at the beginning of the 20th century as an attempt to withstand the railway’s concurrency. The main project aimed at transforming the Po river and other small rivers and channels in a big waterway for the connection of the most important northern industrial cities with Venice’s harbour and the Adriatic sea. Even if the idea of restoring the historical channel between Padua and Venice arose at the end of the First World War, it was only during the years 50s that a new project was conceived and the waterway was included in a global project for the construction of a whole new channel from Venice to Milan. The new project, strongly supported by the local Christian Democratic Party, was managed for more than twenty years causing a huge expenditure of money. After a great investment by both the central State and the local bodies (more than 100 millions euro) the project was finally abandoned. This research reconstructs the historical process and the economical motivations that sustained that project until its failure. Moreover, with the aim of understanding the reasons and the differences of such a failure, the history of inland waterway transport in Italy is compared with contemporary developments in Germany.

Abstract:
The aim of the thesis is to investigate the years passed in Venice by Albino Luciani, years not exhaustively studied by historiography and on which historical memory is still divided. The main evidence is the difficulty not only of Luciani, but also of all personalities who had leadership roles and responsibilities within the Church, in measuring itself with the realization of the Second Vatican Council. The interpretative hypothesis is that the main theme of all the pastoral work of the patriarch of Venice was an effort of fidelity to the Roman tradition and papal authority even through the modernization of the pastoral methods. The patriarch of Venice was particularly representative of a whole national Montinian episcopate which carried out in Italy the Council reception according to the hermeneutic proposed by Paul VI. The survey, comparing the plan of homiletics and the plan of the real pastoral options implemented, examines entirely Luciani’s work, from the diocesan activities to his contribution to regional, national and international Catholic Church. The thesis uses as sources important unpublished material retrieved in nine historical archives and in various personal archives. Finally, the thesis is accompanied with a wide and interesting appendix that contains the interviews with twenty chosen witnesses.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The design of a boat for the America's Cup has always been a challenging task for any naval architect. While in the past the success of the boat was mainly a question of sensibility and experience of the boat designer, lately the increasing technologies and economical means usually at the disposal of the syndicates provides great potential. Both experimental and theoretical tools require a specific technical knowledge of the matter, which leads to the involvement of many specialised people in different fields. For this reason a big managerial effort is required to organize and collect data and ideas coming from different fields. This paper summarises the first experience of the "II Moro di Venezia" syndicate in dealing with the design methodologies from the hydrodynamic point of view. While a great part of the collected data are still of confidential nature, here a brief history of the design work and some peculiar aspects regarding the use of tools like the towing tank, the wind tunnel, the CFD codes and the VPP are presented.

Abstract:
Abstract:
The geometry and bare hull resistance of the IACC systematic series “Il Moro di Venezia” are presented and analyzed. In the first part, the geometry of the model is described; then a number of comparisons is made, following the logic of development of the series. The parent model resistance is compared with that of models for which a single parameter has been varied. Variations concern the bow shape, the stern overhang, the prismatic coefficient, the midsection coefficient, the BWL/TC and LWL/BWL ratios, the displacement. The comparisons in some cases confirm already known trends, like the effect related to the beam and draft variation. In other cases results are somewhat new and interesting both from a qualitative and quantitative viewpoint, like those concerning the bow shape variation. The second part of the paper deals with a statistical study of the systematic series. The main point of this study is to apply a simple approach that allows the researcher to rank the influence of the geometric parameters on the resistance curve. The choice here is to adopt the simple method of correlation coefficients. Starting from a first ranking of a number of non-dimensional parameters based on the mentioned coefficients, a first approximation of the resistance is obtained. Then this function is successfully improved, by adopting some additional restrictions coming from the consideration of the mutual correlation among the variables and regarding the type of included statistical indicators.
