This research is justified by the lack of studies comparing the kinetics artistics practices of Venezuela and concrete practices from São Paulo. This work was made through research of bibliography, academic papers, articles and exhibitions catalogues related to the theme. It has been done in a comparative manner aiming to identify references and specific bibliographies with the purpose of establishing the constructive European influences related to the production of a concrete art in Brazil and a kInetic art in Venezuela in the 1950s. Therefore, it explores the movement similarities from their constructive roots to their respective particularities. The scope of this research is limited to the work of three artists of each movement and to their respective productions during the period in question. They are: Luiz Sacilotto, Judith Lauand and Geraldo de Barros for the concretes; and Jesús Rafael Soto, Carlos Cruz-Diez and Alejandro Otero for the kinetics. There is a discussion about the origin of the concrete movement in São Paulo, around the Ruptura Group, under the influence of the constructivist ideas championed by Waldemar Cordeiro and the abstract tendencies in Brazil at the time. It is also presented the impact of Los Disidientes Group articulated by Otero and its repercussion in the work of Soto and Cruz-Diez, in addition to the Venezuelan context since of the release of Manifesto Los Disidientes (1950) until the adoption of abstraction in the country. The research also analyses the convergence of the artists in Paris during the 1950s which enable the experience interchange between Alejandro Otero, Carlos Cruz-Diez e Jesús Rafael Soto. In the same way, there will be a discussion about the limitations of the adoption of the abstract geometrical language as the way through modernization and rationality which characterizes and... Full textThe Bolivarian government of Venezuela and the government of Cuba use the legitimate status of Bolivarian Missions in Colombia for both legitimate and illegitimate state activities. The overall aim is to undermine the Colombian state and increase the influence of political movements sympathetic to Bolivarianism in Colombian politics with the overall goal of weakening a historical international rival to Venezuela in Latin America. A comparative case study method is applied to four Venezuelan-sponsored Bolivarian missions in Colombia: Robinson, Milagro, Guacaipuro, and Identidad. A review of former Venezuelan President Hugo Chvezs ideology of Bolivarianism is also included. The case study analysis is complemented by fieldwork in Colombia: interviews with many key figures including former insurgents, intelligence officials of both Venezuela and Colombia, as well as politicians and analysts who have direct and indirect knowledge of the missions. This constitutes a unique and up-close perspective on the true nature of Bolivarian missions in Colombia. The Bolivarian government of Venezuela and the government of Cuba consistently seek to expand their anti-U.S. influence throughout Latin America; understanding their ideology and mechanisms for doing so yields important policy implications for the U.S. and Colombian governments, as well as democracy proponents.

This work begins with the need to investigate the dynamics of border ant trade in an overall analysis of the twin cities across the border region of Brazil and tapering to the study of ant trade between Venezuela and Brazil, through the twin cities Santa Elena and Pacaraima. Founded to research the analysis of aspects of ant trade diffusers and containers. The study aims to investigate the ant trade flow bordering generating overflowing with integration effects or fragmentation in regional development and integration between Brazil and Venezuela, and is structured methodologically as literature review of research, integrative review and case study. The towns of Santa Elena de Uairen and Pacaraima identify themselves as a natural income recipient and repulsor rents and goods. In the study of qualitative typologies we used the Weberian analysis of ideal ant trade types. The balance of income in these municipalities causes problems for the economy of these two countries, such as evasion of income, for the local market fails to stimulate the economy, reducing the supply of jobs and further increasing informality.

Full textIn April 2002, the President of Venezuela, Hugo Chávez Frías, was removed from power for approximately forty-eight hours and replacing by an acting president, Pedro Carmona Estanga, who disbanded all of the public authorities. In spite of its brevity, this episode marked the history of Venezuela and testifies acutely to the social and political antagonisms experienced by this country. This research aims to analyse the discursive construction of this event within a corpus of three national daily newspapers, by observing how its meaning takes shape during the moment the events took place. Firstly, I present the historical and political context in which these events occurred and media’s situation in Venezuela, before exploring the notion of the event in general terms. As a result, I show that the event is not a reality that can be captured as such, but is in fact a signified reality, in which language plays a fundamental role. Secondly, I examine in what ways the event is materialised in the dailies’ structure, while according particular attention to the various hierarchical levels of the headlines. The third part of the thesis is dedicated to the study of the event naming act, firstly in the headlines and front pages, then within articles. The corpus analyses show that the discourse of the newspapers in front of this event are characterised by a certain vagueness, by abundant usage of implicit modes of address and by the journalists’ tendency to hide behind facts that seem to impose themselves naturally

Full textThis dissertation examines the different dynamics of change and continuity between the material culture from diverse pre-Columbian societies and the Amerindian societies in present times, which have lived in the regions that today conform Venezuela and its proximities. The methodologies applied in this study depart from the art historical analysis, taking into consideration the archaeological, ethnographical and historical contributions. This analysis focuses on the development of the symbolic forms of representation through an abstract visual language, within the different styles that existed in these societies during the pre-Columbian period, and the changes that unfolded from Colonial times to the present. This study also considers the values of authenticity applied to this material culture when seen as aesthetic objects by Western society, and the different perspectives that have been assumed from the relationship between these societies and their religious and mythological conceptions, as well as their adaption to the laicized and contemporary Western society.

Full textSimulation is a lie. This notion takes on special characteristics when it comes to simulating a contract. The simulation of contract is one of the most fascinating institutions of the micro-world of contracts. A contract is a simulation when, by mutual agreement of the parties, it does not express their true intent. It is an agreement to hide all or part of the true agreement. Neither French law nor Venezuelan legislators have taken the trouble to define what we should understand by simulation of contract in civil law. This loophole has been filled either by doctrine or case law. Every author and almost all decisions have their own notion of contract simulation. This obviously provides no sure footing when seeking to identify a transaction of this nature. In this work, we have set ourselves the task of identifying the fundamental elements behind simulation of contracts, both in French and Venezuelan civil law

Full textThe photographic work of Venezuelan artist Nelson Garrido (1952) is a transgression of the national scopic regime. Through the aesthetics of violence and ugliness, his iconoclastic images present a profound reading of Venezuelan culture at the end of the 20th century. The richness and the symbolic effectiveness in Garrido's shots have led us to question its iconography in order to identify and analyze how they represent this Caribbean country. In this first approach, the notion of hybridity and the processes of cultural hybridization appeared, in our eyes, as a common thread in his work, particularly from 1989, when he left the fieldwork (Muertos en Vía series) and devoted himself to work only in his studio. Taking this into consideration, we set out to construct an interpretative and contextual reading of the guardian gaze, based on the theory of cultural hybridization put forward by Argentine anthropologist Néstor García Canclini. Our corpus of study is the series Todos los santos son muertos, made in Caracas between 1989 and 1993. This fragment of Garrido’s work condenses the visual vocabulary of the artist and crystallizes his deepest aesthetic, intellectual and ethical concerns. Our exploration of Garrido’s work constitutes the first doctoral research based on his work and it is also the first to use first-hand sources kept in both the artist's personal archives and in the Venezuelan National Archives
