Abstract:
The natural resource curse is a widely debated phenomenon usually proposing a connection between large extractive resource wealth and substandard economic performance. This paper concerns the connection between large extractive resource wealth and the potential for its effects on long term political stability. Using Venezuela as a case study, this paper delves into the political history of Venezuela, plagued by endemic political instability, and attempts to test the political aspect of the resource curse, analysing history with a focus on the oil industry. The conclusion is that there is a clear connection between oil price volatility and political instability, but only evident starting in the latter half of the 20th -century. Further research into specific regimes, eras, as well as comparative analyses between Venezuela and other states is required to provide additional answers in regard to specific causes for political instability in the early 20th -century and the pre-oil period.

Santos, Miguel Ángel. "Essays on the Venezuelan economy." Doctoral thesis, Universitat de Barcelona, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/393931.

Full text
Abstract:
Fifteen years into the twentieth century, Venezuela displays the same income per capita than in 1955. Sixty years of stagnation, where the country managed to elude its portentous luck in the natural resource lottery. This period has been sprinkled with massive oil bonanzas, including the Arab oil embargo (1973), the Iranian revolution (1979), the Gulf War (1990-1991), and the prolonged windfall of the last decade (2004-2013). In spite of that, the economy stagnated throughout, hinting that oil proceeds fueled a mixture of import-based consumption boom (later to be reversed) and capital flight. All these features make Venezuela a prolific field to deepen on the study of certain branches within the economic literature. Chapter 1 contains a real business cycle (RBC) model as originally presented by Kydland and Prescott (1982) and Long and Plosser (1983), calibrated for the Venezuelan economy as a whole, and the non-oil sector in particular. In spite of heavy state intervention, the model is able to replicate observed movements and co-movements of real variables over the cycle more accurately than reported in the literature for more advanced, free-market economies. The goodness of fit is driven by Venezuelan real wages and labor productivity being volatile and almost perfectly correlated with cyclical output, in stark contrast to the sluggishness and lack of correlation with output that real wages exhibit in the United States and other OECD economies. Chapter 2 presents a framework for analyzing financial repression, inflation surprises and seigniorage, and exploring their connections to balance of payments crisis. Fiscal revenues coming from financial repression are significantly higher in years of exchange controls and legislated interest rate ceilings. We find evidence suggesting a systematic link between significant distortions in the domestic financial system and a weakening of external accounts via capital flight. Capital flight weakens the government’s revenue base inducing greater reliance on inflation tax and financial repression. The connection between large haircuts on domestic debt and a weakening of the balance of payments may also help in explaining why emerging markets sovereign defaults often occur at seemingly low levels of external debt to GDP ratios. Chapter 3 contains a thorough cross-country study to assess the impacts of natural resources in non-resource export concentration at the country and product level. It reports significant evidence indicating that countries with high shares of natural resources in exports tend to have less diversified non-resource export baskets. At the product level, capital intensive goods tend to have larger shares on the non-resource basket when natural resources are high. These results are more robust in developing countries, which is consistent with the literature reporting that they are more prone to import capital and therefore benefit from real exchange rate appreciations archetypal of Dutch disease. For resource rich countries, non-resource homogenous goods tend to make up a larger share of the export basket the lower their technological sophistication. Yet, for products further away in the value chain, this pattern is reversed: The more sophisticated non-resource differentiated goods are, the more they thrive in resource-rich environments.

Abstract:
The aim of this paper is to investigate how international, national and local actors have handled the Venezuelan migration in the state of Roraima. It uses the Multi-Level Governance perspective in order to analyze the different levels of actors, being those; international, national and local that are involved in this situation. Interviews, observation and document analysis are the methods used in order to collect and analyze data for this research. This thesis finds that the Venezuelan migration has been handled by different actors in a multi-level type of governance, where decision-making is shared across these levels.

Laya-Pereira, Juan Carlos. "Permian carbonates in the Venezuelan Andes." Thesis, Durham University, 2012. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/3378/.

Full text
Abstract:
In northern South America, Upper Palaeozoic strata were deposited extensively over peri-cratonic areas associated with restricted seas located between Laurentia and Gondwana, in equatorial Pangea. In many places the successions are rarely exposed, and so are poorly documented; this is largely the result of extensive weathering and dense vegetation in the tropical Andes. However, these strata do contain significant information for palaeogeographic and palaeoclimatic reconstructions, and our understanding of the evolution of northern Gondwana and the finally assembly of Pangea. The main objective of this thesis is the study of Permian carbonates in the Venezuelan Andes, their sedimentology, geochemistry, diagenesis and petroleum potential. The Palmarito sediments were deposited on a carbonate ramp that dipped basinwards towards the north facing the open ocean. The formation evolved from the underlying fluvial (Sabaneta Formation) through tidal-flat to mid-outer ramp deposits, with all facies recording a well-developed cyclicity. These strata fill an important gap in the regional palaeogeography and hence have revealed important implications for the palaeoclimate and palaeoceanography of the time. The results of this study of Palmarito strata have significant implications for the palaeogeography of this Permian time. From the facies analysis of the Palmarito Formation, new evidence has been provided for a central Pangean seaway. Furthermore, isotope analyses have improved the time-frame for the succession from 87/86Sr data, and in addition, the long-term stratigraphic trends in the δ13C and δ18O data have permitted interpretations of the climatic and oceanographic controls on Permian carbonate deposition. Moreover, metre-scale cyclicity shows the patterns of short-term controls on sedimentation, where autocyclic and allocyclic processes affected deposition and the vertical stacking of facies. An analysis of the diagenesis of the Palmarito carbonates shows several stages of cementation and alteration, although the strata are mainly fine-grained and coarse cements are rare. Finally the elements of the petroleum system for the Palmarito have been considered for the succession and as a result, it can be proposed that, firstly, fractures in finer-grained facies have the potential to provide reservoir rocks, and secondly, that although high values of Tmax have been obtained from rock-eval analysis from one locality, Palmarito strata do have the potential to form source rocks. Further investigation is required to ascertain the actual hydrocarbon potential of the Palmarito. The high content of finer-grained facies with low permeability provides the Palmarito strata a high potential to perform as a seal, as well as possibility to develop stratigraphic traps.

Delgado, S. José Victor. "Human resource planning in the Venezuelan oil industry." Thesis, University of Warwick, 1985. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/34799/.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation presents the findings of a study of the effectiveness of the human resource planning in a large corporation working within the limitations of an underdeveloped country - Venezuela. Because the economy of Venezuela is heavily dependant on its oil industry the company PetrOleos de Venezuela S.A. was chosen for the detailed study. It was found that the system in use in the period 1980-81 was defective in that it did not address the serious medium and long term issues of manpower supply in a country seriously short of the skills needed. There was a lack of linkage between human resource planning and the corporation's long term objectives. Too much emphasis was being placed on quantitative, and too little on qualitative approaches to the problem. A new approach was developed to complement the existing shorter term quantitative approach. This involved a direct and active interaction with corporate planning. Within this framework a qualitative method of human resource planning was proposed and implemented. This method was approved by the Board and introduced within the Industrial Security function of the company in 1982. It has proved Its usefulness in defining the type of personnel required by the organization in the distant future. Since then the method has been adopted in two affiliates of the company and it is planned to introduce the method in a third affiliate in 1985.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis examines the recent IranianVenezuelan partnership, especially as it relates to Irans involvement in Latin America and its impact on U.S. foreign policy. Thus, this study analyzes Irans behavior vis--vis the U.S. and Latin America and asks whether Iran IS trying to strike a balance against the U.S. by forming a bloc with Venezuelaand, if so, whether it can succeed. Over the past five years, the Islamic Republic of Iran has expanded its influence in Latin America as part of the aggressive foreign policy of President Ahmadinejad. He especially seeks support for Irans nuclear program and a way to evade international isolation. Furthermore, Ahmadinejad aims to outflank Irans foremost opponentthe United Statesin its own backyard with the help of the Venezuelan populist leader, Hugo Chvez, who also endorses strong anti-imperialist and anti-American rhetoric. With the assistance of President Chvez, Iran has found a bridge to infiltrate the region. The two countries have formed an anti-U.S. front known to the world as the axis of unity. Through this relationship, Iran has deepened its contacts with other leftist countries such as Ecuador, Bolivia, Nicaragua, and Cuba.

Abstract:
The study was designed to examine the causal relationship between the Venezuelan inflation and the monetarist variables--money supply--and the structuralist variables-- exchange rate and balance of payments. The data (1964-1982) was gathered from the International Financial Statistic Yearbook, 1983 and the Statistical Yearbook, 1974, 1982. Chapter I is an introduction to the research problem. Chapter II does a review of the related literature. Chapter III deals with the methods and procedures for treating the data. Chapter IV presents an statistical analysis of the data. And, Chapter V contains a summary of the study and its findings, conclusions and recommendations. The study only found a significant relationship between inflation and the monetarist variables money supply and GNP, though supporting the monetarist theory. A similar investigation is suggested, but selecting a longer time period, other.variables, and more refined methodologies and analysis.

Abstract:
The conception of Human Rights is relatively new to international relations and their analysis and, accordingly, their location within this field, theoretically as well as practically, has not yet been ultimately identified. Their role varies among differing theoretical approaches. The aim of this work is to contribute to this discussion through working towards a theoretical framework which allows to place the normative conception of Human Rights in a rather realist analysis of foreign policy. Visualizing this attempt through reviewing the foreign policy measures initiated by the United States and the European Union towards the Maduro government throughout the Venezuelan presidential crisis, the potential impact of the Human Rights discourse for the means of legitimizing such measures becomes apparent. Eventually, the power potential the discourse holds when instrumentalized as a tool of foreign policy contributes to the understanding of its role in contemporary international relations.

Abstract:
On the 3rd of December 1989, Venezuelans went to the polls for the first time to directly elect their local and regional political leaders. A process of government decentralization was initiated with direct elections of municipal mayors and regional state governors. Since 1958, the political system had been dominated by two political parties, the social democratic AD (Acción Democrática) and Christian democratic COPEI, both strongly centralized parties. The system of strongly dominant political parties is often referred to as partyarchy, with penetration of organized social and political activities. Notwithstanding, the AD-COPEI partyarchy experienced a relatively rapid process of undermining from 1989, losing control over important mayordomes, governorships and municipal councils. The municipal, regional and national elections of 1998 and 2000 changed the political panorama even more. Several entirely new political parties have emerged. The MVR (Movimiento V República) party of current President Hugo Chávez presents the most dramatic and rapid rise in this context. But similarly, other parties associated with decentralization have achieved increased political influence.Theoretically, a combination of actors rational choice, and, more process-structural approaches, helps to theoretically understand the political transformations related to decentralization and its implications for the party system. The study demonstrates that the party system and political decentralization are Intimately connected and dependent of each other. This study describes and analyzes the "encounter" between the Venezuelan party system and the decentralization reform.

Abstract:
Since President Hugo Chávez Frias came to power in 1999, the Venezuelan political space has become militarized. The study focused on examining how and why the military entered into the traditional civilian space in Venezuela and militarized the political system. The purpose of this thesis was to analyze the participation of the Venezuelan military in state affairs, the reasons why this institution became such an active political actor, and how this process evolved over the last five years. Findings revealed that the Venezuelan military became involved in national politics through a series of prerogatives granted by the government of Hugo Chávez. These military prerogatives were granted in key state areas such as the cabinet, legislature and police/intelligence. Also, by using the Rational Choice Model it could be examined of why President Chávez, as the purposive actor, made the choice of militarizing Venezuelan politics. This was a value-maximizing alternative among a set of other alternatives to accomplish Chávez's major political goals.

Full text
Abstract:
The main argument of this thesis is that the penitentiary crisis in Venezuela is brought about an inept criminal justice system whose functioning (or lack thereof) further exacerbates overcrowding in penitentiary facilities as well as violates the most basic human rights. More elaborately, I argue that the unintentional (mis)use of pre-trial preventive detention, one of the consequences of the inept criminal justice system, further exacerbates the overcrowding in prisons and creates serious human rights implications. The purpose of this study is to establish a connection between the penitentiary crisis in Venezuela, with a focus on pre-trial preventive detention, and the larger criminal justice system failure in the country. The data source and data gathering technique for the thesis consists of a content analysis and a secondary literature review. Since the theoretical framework of the project is international human rights, instruments from the United Nations and the Organization of American States are used. Reports from non-governmental organizations like Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, and Observatorio Venezolano de Prisiones provide the data to conduct the analysis which is specific to pre-trial preventive detention in Venezuela. These reports are produced on a yearly basis and will help to compliment the data obtained from government sources, mainly the Venezuelan Ombudsman's office. The findings of the thesis support the argument that contrary to common belief, the (mis)use of pre-trial preventive detention in Venezuela is in fact mainly accidental, it is not systematic in the sense that it is not targeting a particular group of people due to their political affiliation and/or beliefs. Furthermore, I prove that Venezuelan penitentiary facilities are overcrowded due to the (mis)use of pre-trial preventive detention. Immediate recommendations for the Venezuelan state include re-categorizing the penal population in Venezuela as well as diminishing the use of deprivation of liberty, specifically pre-trial preventive detention.

Elder, John Franklin. "Chromosomal complements and variation in some Venezuelan annual killifishes (cyprinodontidae)." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1988. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/43853.

Full text
Abstract:

Karyotypes of nine species of Venezuelan annual killifishes were compared. Karyotypic differences were found between species and between some genera.

A chromosomal sexual dimorphism was found in Pterolebias hoignei (2N = 46). Males of this species possess a single large "Y" chromosome. No chromosomal divergence was detected among conspecific populations from different localities. Pterolebias hoignei and Pterolebias zonatus were found to differ both in diploid number (46 and 42 respectively) and in metacentric chromosome number (6 and 12 respectively).

All Rachoviaspecies were found to have a diploid number of 44. Rachovia maculipinnisand R. brevis were found to differ from one another in metacentric chromosome number (20 and 12 respectively). Rachovia hummelincki and R. pyropunctata both possess metacentric chromosome counts of 10.

No karyotypic differences were found between Austrofundulus transilis and Austrofundulus limnaeus (2N = 44, metacentrics = 12). Several populations of the latter although divergent in male color patterns, did not differ karyotypically. All species examined, except Rivulus stellifer, departed from the presumptive ancestral teleost diploid number of 48. The degree of chromosomal variation appears not to be as high among the New World as among the Old World annuals. This difference among lineages with similar life histories and reproductive strategies suggests that stochastic events have not played a major role in mediating chromosomal divergence in annual fishes.

Parejo, Milady. "The strategic partnership model for technology transfer : the Venezuelan telecommunications case." Thesis, University of Brighton, 1998. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.265269.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis presents a study of technology transfer within the telecommunications company of Venezuela (CANTV) between 1991-1996. The thesis examines, in-depth, a single case - CANTV - at a critical time in its history. The company was state-owned until 1991 when it became a partnership with a US corporation, General Telephone Electronic (GTE) and Telefonica de Espana. The case is discussed against the background of global re-organisation of the telecommunications sector, its institutional transformation and technological change to provide an empirical foundation for a extensive study of technology transfer within the context of international alliances. It extends established theories which, hitherto, have not adequately described the role of partnerships as a conduit for the transfer of technologies. Until the early 1990s the performance of CANTV was far below international best practice. It was determined, at governmental level in Venezuela, to institute a radical transformation and profound changes took place in ownership, technology and, subsequently, performance. The case was analysed using a multi-disciplinary and longitudinal approach, drawing extensively on grounded theory. Data was gathered by participant observation, extensive interviews, study of company and governmental documentation. Frameworks for analysis were drawn from innovation theory, analyses of international technology transfer approaches and business management theory. In addition to an extensive organisational study, focusing on the relationships between partners, two specific technologies selected for examination as they were transferred into CANTV from partners. One technology was 'successfully transferred, the other not - this provided data for a detailed comparative analysis. The research concludes that a 'new' model of technology transfer has emerged within strategic partnerships and international alliances. However, to be successful, a portfolio of managerial capabilities is needed to reap the benefits of potential synergies between partners. Especially important are management skills and processes to define partners' capabilities, position technologies, manage complex transfer processes and support on-going learning.

Campos, Igor Alberto. "Improvement of managerial education of junior officers of the Venezuelan Navy." Thesis, Monterey, California. Naval Postgraduate School, 1988. http://hdl.handle.net/10945/23267.

Full text
Abstract:

The Venezuelan Navy, depends on its personnel, equipment, and facilities to successfully accomplish the Navy's mission. Therefore Naval operations rely on the ability of the officers to plan, organize, lead, and control the organization. Naval officers, whether senior or junior, hold positions as managers. For this reason a study was made of the educational background of officer candidates to determine the amount of management education they have received at the Naval Academy. From this study it was learned that although naval officers are generally well educated and trained; they are weak in the management area. In this thesis an attempt is made to show the basic elements necessary to improve such managerial education. Conclusions were drawn and recommendations were made to help the managerial development of Venezuela's Naval officers.

Greatorex, Harry. "Patronage for revolutionaries : the politics of community organising in a Venezuelan barrio." Thesis, University of East Anglia, 2016. https://ueaeprints.uea.ac.uk/64220/.

Full text
Abstract:
The political success of Hugo Chávez and Venezuela’s Bolivarian Revolution has relied on the promise of both emancipation and improved terms of patronage for the urban poor. This thesis takes a journey through barrio Pueblo Nuevo, the oldest informal township in Mérida city, to consider the tension between these ways of thinking about the relationship between people and government as a context for community organising. Different kinds of evidence are presented from fieldwork conducted between 2013 and 2014, when Mérida made international headlines as violent protests erupted and the middle-class neighbourhoods around Pueblo Nuevo barricaded themselves against the state. Observations from community meetings in and around the barrio show how different groups position themselves strategically in relation to political parties and city authorities. Experiences from nine months volunteer teaching work is used to explore the participatory methodology of the barrio’s famous ‘little school’ - the Fundación Cayapa education collective – and its work to reduce gang violence. Experiences of living and participating in Pueblo Nuevo and of building relationships with key community members are drawn on to explore perceptions of the lawlessness and political radicalism of Venezuela’s barrio populations. Interviews with activists, residents and local officials are used to map the intellectual landscape of the barrio, identifying different overlapping folk concepts about the urban poor – including as ghetto thugs and as social revolutionaries – and connecting these to notions about government and democracy. These connected areas of analysis are used to bring together the existing scholarship around Venezuela’s experience of Chavismo – as a public narrative, as a set of institutions and policies and as the context for barrio organising. The thesis contributes to these existing areas of literature by challenging the representation of Bolivarianism as a break from the pre-Chávez political era. Historical evidence is presented to connect the contemporary experience of Pueblo Nuevo with the history of the barrio as Mérida’s first so-called “land invasion” following ruralurban migration during the mid-Twentieth Century. Important continuities are identified with the pre-Chávez era in the strategies of community groups, their administration by partisan city authorities and within the Bolivarian public narrative of class warfare and popular empowerment. The thesis argues that community organising in Pueblo Nuevo is shaped by the inherited tension between processes of social emancipation and patronage and their premises in competing folk concepts about the urban poor.

Gutic, Jorge. "Assessment of stakeholder views on tourism management in a Venezuelan national park." Thesis, Sheffield Hallam University, 2003. http://shura.shu.ac.uk/12229/.

Full text
Abstract:
There is a need for new approaches to the management of tourism and natural resources in developing countries that recognise that there is often little tradition of stakeholder involvement in tourism planning and management and that, while wide and effective participation is to be encouraged, it is unrealistic to expect such participation to emerge quickly. The study evaluates recent trends and approaches in this literature and it develops two original conceptual frameworks for the management of tourism and natural resources in protected and other natural areas in developing countries: the Stakeholder and Resource Management Framework (STREM) and the Stakeholder Assessment Framework (STA). These related frameworks take into account the restricted character of public participation and the conflicts over development and conservation goals that are often found in tourist areas in such countries. These two frameworks develop a new approach to stakeholder involvement in tourism planning and management by objectives, where appropriate levels of tourism and resource use are defined in relation to the views of the affected parties. Use is made of stakeholder identification and analysis techniques, including assessments of their resource dependence and political power. Stakeholder interviews are conducted in order to assess the affected actors and to develop tourism and resource management strategies that reflect their views. The opinions of affected parties are evaluated in relation to valued resources, what to conserve, levels and kinds of resource use, and likely responses to various management proposals. The frameworks and related stakeholder interviews provide a structured and systematic approach to consultation with affected parties in tourism and resource planning and management in contexts where previously there has been little public participation. They provide managers with a better understanding of actor perspectives, thus enabling them to make more informed decisions. It adopts an anthropocentric perspective on sustainable tourism and resource use that gives prominence to stakeholder views on acceptable levels and kinds of resource use for tourism in natural areas. This study applies key aspects of both frameworks in the context of Los Roques National Park in Venezuela. This resulted in the identification of 21 stakeholder organisations representing tourism operators, government and NGOs, from which 30 representatives were interviewed, and also a decision pathway questionnaire was completed. Perceptions of the appropriateness of current tourism activities varied between different interest groups. Most stakeholders felt that the park's current tourist volumes were appropriate, but the degree of approval was highest for tourism actors and lowest for NGO members. Most stakeholders expressed concern about tourism-specific management problems. The management scenario considered most likely to be applied in the park in the future involves a growth in tourist numbers and related facilities together with increased tourism management. Differences between this scenario and the preferences of various stakeholders are identified, together with the tensions that may result. These results, and the use of the frameworks, have practical value for the park's management and for the management of similar natural areas in Venezuela and other less developed countries. The practical application of the frameworks and interviews is evaluated here in relation to their value as policymaking and management approaches, and the frameworks are also further refined in response to the lessons learnt.

Abstract:
The assessment of work stress is one of the most important aspects in the current scope of occupational psychological health, especially when it comes to chronic levels of involvement. Here are the results of the Venezuelan psychometric validation of the Cuban version of the Maslach Burnout Inventory-General Survey (MBI-GS). Results show adequate reliability of the instrument and suggest the need to remove item 1 to ensure its construct validity. Some indicators reveal the divergent criterion validity of the MBI-GS on the degree of the participant’s psychological well-being.

Penfield, Amy. "Material morality : an ethnography of value among the Sanema of Venezuelan Amazonia." Thesis, London School of Economics and Political Science (University of London), 2015. http://etheses.lse.ac.uk/3153/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores the value of manufactured items among the Sanema, a hunting and horticultural people of Southern Venezuela. By extending the ‘virtue ethics’ approach prevalent in the study of Amazonian societies, I suggest that artefacts are as much a component of Sanema virtuous conviviality as corporeal practices. Manufactured items are meaningful in a distinct way to the often-studied crafted artefacts, which are widely seen to embody the human subjectivities of the maker. Instead, the valuable prefabricated properties of industrial goods, which I refer to as ‘affordances’, can allow morality to be conceptualised and materialised. The focus on manufactured items reflects the recent influx of such goods into Sanema lives that feature centrally in their daily narratives of personhood, sociality and ethical practises. In drawing attention to these industrial goods that emerge from the wider national context, I contextualise Sanema experiences within the contemporary setting of political participation, the market economy and frequent encounters with nonindigenous people. In contexts that range from expressions of care, inter-ethnic dependence, acts of justice, manoeuvrability within state apparatus, and the moral actions of nonhuman beings within the cosmos, the ethnography demonstrates that morality is often articulated as being realised through or within ‘things’. As such, my approach attempts to transcend the human-artefact dichotomy by leaving open the possibility that morality emerges from manifold material forms.

Arellano-Osuna, Adelina E. "Oral reading miscues of fourth-grade Venezuelan children from five dialect regions." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1988. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/184334.

Full text
Abstract:
The main purpose of this investigation was to analyze both quantitatively and qualitatively reader's oral reading miscues and the retellings of Venezuelan fourth graders in five Venezuelan dialect regions. The major question to be answered was: In what ways do Venezuelan children who speak variations of Spanish use their syntactic, semantic, graphophonic and pragmatic systems and their reading strategies (sampling, predicting, confirming, and correcting) in their process of meaning construction during oral reading? The answer to the major research question reveals that informants from the highlands: Merida and Trujillo are more proficient readers in their meaning construction. In the group of informants from the lowlands the percentages show that at least half of the subjects are similar to the most proficient readers from the highlands. The findings are supportive of a definition of reading as meaning construction. They were able to retell the events in an ordered sequence and to name and develop most of the characters in the story. There were no major dialect features differences between the five Venezuelan regions' informants. Most of the dialect features that children displayed in the oral reading were also present in reader's oral retellings. Among these groups of informants, their dialect can be considered as an unrelated factor to their reading proficiency.
