In the collection of dozens of doctrinal documents on the protection of heritage, the Venice Charter occupies a unique position. The Venice Charter was created more than half a century ago, but it is still treated as the universal, basic document of the heritage protection. This is confirmed by numerous declarations emphasizing the validity of the Venice Charter, contained in many doctrinal documents adopted by ICOMOS, and even in the Operational Guidelines of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee. The Venice Charter is therefore a kind of decalogue for the monument protection [1]. However, ever

After the Second World War the ecclesiastical property was drastically reduced in Hungary. However, Vatican II gave an intense motivation and impulse to the spiritual-psychical revival for the communities and by this time, the preservation of the religious heritage got some statal, professional attention too. The restoration or reconstruction works were often linked with the acute interior transformations according to Vatican II. The Merchant of Venice's seemingly disconnected and interweaving plots contribute to the difficulty of assessing its characters and genre. The comic-tragic ambiguity of the character of Shylock only deepens this ambiguity. There is a precedent in the literature for looking to Aristotle and the Poetics to inform the study of the Shakespeare canon, but few have attempted to understand MV in terms of the taxonomy of ancient classical poetics. I attempt to do this, and find this approach very fruitful for addressing some of the problematic characteristics of the play, especially with regard to pl

Shakespeare?s Shylock from the Merchant of Venice is a complex character who not only defies simple definition but also takes over a play in which he is not the titular character. How Shakespeare arrived at Shylock in the absence of a Jewish presence in early modern England, as well as what caused the playwright to humanize his villain when other playwrights had not is the subject of much debate. This thesis shows Shakespeare?s humanizing of Shylock as a blurring of the lines between Jews and Christians, and as such, a shift of usury from a uniquely Jewish problem to a human problem. Abstract:
AbstractAn understanding of the different microbial constellations or microbiomes, which every habitat and every organism harbor, will be the key to addressing many of the challenges humanity will face in the twenty-first century. Such comprehension could launch several innovations relating to natural and cultural capital, including historical and artistic heritage. In relation to cultural heritage, microorganisms are mainly known through their role as deteriogens, but the features creating damage can be exploited positively, attaining more sustainable restoration strategies, in accordance with the principles of compatibility and retreatability deriving from reflections on the Cultural Heritage inspired by the Charter of Venice (International charter for the Conservation and restoration of monument and sites (the Venice Chart 1964). In: ICOMOS, IInd International Congress of Architects and Technicians of Historic Monuments, 1964) onwards. In this article, we show a series of case studies, using both wild-type microorganisms and plant-based extracts, providing a comprehensive proof of concept of the feasibility of biotechnological solutions for a more sustainable restoration strategy, to replace the products in use which are often dangerous for operators, aggressive for works of art and no longer compatible with the environment. The overview of the case studies presented, many of which are still unpublished, responds to the need to go beyond the state of the art and has entirely sprung from suggestions by restorers, interested in learning about potential innovations and strongly determined to introduce non-toxic products in their daily work. In this perspective, the case studies dealt with two topics: bio-cleaning and disinfection. Noteworthy results were obtained on a platform of different types of artworks and different materials with compatible, harmless and selective products.

Abstract:
Lope de Vega’s play, La fuerza lastimosa, written around 1599 and first published in 1609, was very popular in Seventeenth-Century Italy, as research by Fausta Antonucci and Salomé Vuelta has demonstrated. Several Italian adaptations are already known, among which a dramma per musica, La forza compassionevole, written by Antonio Salvi and staged in Leghorn in 1694. In the same year, another opera based on Lope’s drama was staged in Venice (as Alfonso I) and in Naples (under the title Alfonso il Sesto re di Castiglia). Two years later, this last version was revived in Palermo, again, as in Naples, to celebrate the birthday of King Charles II of Spain. None of these three librettos indicates Lope’s authorship nor it has been hypothesized until now. However, the plot of all librettos is clearly based on Lope’s play. This chapter aims at illustrating the relation between the librettos for these three performances and La fuerza lastimosa. It also discusses the context of all the stagings and identifies some of the existing musical sources. Finally, it argues that Alessandro Scarlatti could be the author of the Neapolitan score.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses the merchant colonies who invited Jewish merchants into their cities on exceptionally propitious terms, constituting the west European region of emancipation. Raison d'état and shifting trade patterns induced governments in such cities as Ancona, Livorno, and Venice to grant Jews extensive privileges of residence and trade, worship, and communal autonomy. In Bordeaux, Jews originally gained privileges as New Christians; over time they emerged as Jews and received confirmation of those privileges. In Livorno and Bordeaux, those privileges entailed virtual parity with Christian merchants. Meanwhile, Hamburg's Senate first attracted a Jewish merchant colony by extending privileges but later, by imposing heavy taxes, drove it away. In Amsterdam and London, which had ceased granting charters to foreign merchant colonies, Jews found themselves in the novel and ambiguous situation of functioning without a charter. They therefore gained rights on an ad hoc basis, becoming members of an emerging civil society. The Jews of Bordeaux, Amsterdam, and London were to make virtually seamless transitions from corporate or civic parity to equal citizenship.

No city or island has so unique a landscape as Venice. Suspended between sea and sky, its singular fusion of the organic and the historic architectural landscape draws visitors from far and wide. For film-makers, the lure of Venice has persisted in spite of (and sometimes because of) the logistical difficulties of filming in the city, offering aesthetic qualities and symbolic force that are given potency through the relationship between Venice’s buildings and its canals and waterways. The fluid landscape of the city – its shifting tides, light and reflections – assumes an ambiguous quality on film, which lends presence and character to genres as disparate as romantic comedy and horror.

This chapter uses Ari Nohem to document the transmission of Kabbalah from Safed to Venice and looks at Modena's indictment of this transfer of knowledge and practice. The three sections of the chapter trace different components of Modena's response to Safed Kabbalah. The first part charts Modena's rejection of stories about the magical and theurgic powers of Isaac Luria and other kabbalists from Safed that circulated in Venice. The second section concentrates on Modena's attempt to dissociate Kabbalah from philosophy, a response to and rejection of the thought of Israel Saruq—one of the most important kabbalists to travel from Safed to Venice in the late sixteenth century. Finally, the third section traces Modena's response to Cordovero's Pardes Rimonim, a work that systematically examined a central doctrine of theosophical Kabbalah—the sefirot or the ten hypostases of the divine being.
