Abstract:
Inaccuracies, false information, and fraudulent work in scientific publications could cause indirect harm, lead to significant negative socioeconomic impacts, and erode public trust in science. Journals – and publishers – play an essential role as gate-keepers in ensuring the veracity of published scientific literature. However, beyond corporate pride and integrity, there is usually no legal obligation or formal regulatory requirement for journals to ensure the veracity of the work they publish or be efficient and transparent in any investigative proceedings. Here, I propose a numerical indicator of the performance of a journal in terms of its efforts at establishing the veracity of the work it publishes and due diligence, an index computed from the following values: a) frequency of alleged irregularities or misconduct, b) frequency of retractions, c) efficiency of the journal's response to concerns or allegations, and d) transparency and thoroughness with which the journal investigates those concerns and announces its findings and actions.

Abstract:
Artificial intelligence technologies are transforming the way scientific research is reviewed to make verification processes more accurate, efficient, and objective. This paper considers AI's role in testing the veracity of academic studies, with a focus on concerns of research fraud, data integrity, and adherence to ethical and methodological standards. Powered by AI, emerging tools allow the tracing of anomalies, inconsistencies, and potential biases in published research works with the help of NLP algorithms and machine learning models. It is also applied to various fields such as plagiarism detection, statistical analysis checking, and the identification of fabricated or manipulated data. However, flaws regarding the use of AI technologies include relying too much on automation of systems and requiring human supervision. Academic institutions and journals can further enhance scientific research to make it more credible, transparent, and coherent-a reason to be trusted globally-by integrating AI into its evaluation process.

Abstract:
The goal of this research is to discover some identities in the general form of the sum of left and right-sided weighted fractional integrals of a function concerning to another function. Using composite convex functions, several fractional Hermite-Hadamard inequalities are derived. The veracity of the inequalities established is demonstrated by drawing graphs of such relationships. Furthermore, our findings generalize a number of previously published outcomes. These findings will aid in the study of fractional differential equations and fractional boundary value problems with unique solutions.

Abstract:
The Research Paper Purpose is to analyze the genesis of procedural and scientific principles of modern foreign standards for evaluating expert research results; clarify uncertainty sources that result in ambiguous expert conclusions; substantiate the need to use the probabilistic (Bayesian) approach while formulation of forensic experts’ answers. To fulfil this goal, the following research methods have been chosen: historical and legal; systemic and structural; comparative legal; formal and legal. The procedural, epistemological and doctrinal factors complicating evaluation of the objectivity and veracity of the expert conclusion in domestic law enforcement practice are named. Evaluation standards of expert evidence at different times throughout the world have been analyzed (universal adoption of the Frye standard, substantiation and validation of the Daubert standard, prove beyond a reasonable doubt). It is emphasized that provision of probable conclusions by the forensic expert is due to a continuum of uncertainties, which source are peculiarities of the formation of crime traces and methods of collecting traces at the scene, the level of expertise development and methodologies of expert research, interpretation and evaluation of forensic examination results. To shape the expert’s conviction in research findings, a statistical Bayesian method of establishing the likelihood ratio is proposed, which enables to evaluate significance of versions proposed by the forensic expert and is the basis for the court to take a reasoned decision. The probabilistic approach is proposed to be applied both for evaluation of a random coincidence of features when identifying forensic examination objects, as well as in relation to possible errors in laboratory tests and interpretation of results drawn by a forensic expert.

Abstract:
This research note presents a new database of policy diffusion research results useful for research synthesis. This database is a compilation of the results from every event history analysis model of policy diffusion in the American states published between 1990 and 2018. The result is 507 models with 6,641 variables. The database is publicly available and can be used to answer numerous questions regarding the veracity of policy diffusion research claims. It also provides a systematic understanding of where there are gaps in diffusion research that can be filled by scholars from many subfields. This article briefly discusses the data collection and coding processes, what is available in the database, and how it can be used. It also provides an illustrative meta-analysis of the effect of legislative professionalism on innovation adoption.

Abstract:
Abstract Photography has become a pervasive component of contemporary communication. Recent technological advances in creating and manipulating images have provided renewed impetus to decades-long debates on use of photographs in science. With increase in the potential for inappropriate image manipulation, fears about misrepresentation have heightened concern among journal editors and scholars about the 'accuracy' of published images. We discuss how science has responded to growing concerns surrounding falsification and inaccuracy of photography. We document progress in implementing a variety of complementary approaches to addressing the problem. These include digital forensics, photo member checking and the implementation of codes of ethics to enhance the veracity of published photographs in science research. We conclude by acknowledging the irreducible conflict likely to remain between use of the photograph as a creative work of art and employment of this medium as a source of information in the progress of science.

Abstract:
Abstract Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response (ASMR) — the sensory phenomenon experienced by some people in response to visual and auditory stimuli such as whispering — has attracted substantial public attention but is not yet well understood or well established within the scientific community. Recent research published in PeerJ by Cash, Heisick and Papesh (2018) investigated whether ASMR could be a placebo effect (resulting from expectation) rather than a genuine experience triggered by ASMR-inducing stimuli. In this article, we provide a commentary on Cash et al.’s findings and argue that they provide evidence for (rather than against) the veracity of ASMR. We discuss issues regarding the measurement of ASMR and end by providing some recommendations on how to assess ASMR as both a state and a trait, in the hope of galvanising collaborative research efforts in the emerging field of ASMR.

Abstract:
The main focus of the criticisms raised by O'Kelly and Soltani (2025) (hereafter referred to as discussers) to the authors' article in Bulletin of Mineral Research and Exploration (174, 1-10) is to examine the veracity of the strength-based equations presented by Kayabalı et al. (2024). The discussers applied the predictive equations proposed by the authors to dissimilar soils in the two articles (Kayabalı et al., 2015a; Kayabalı et al., 2015b) published earlier by the lead author with his research group. The discussers showed that the predictive equations 6 and 7 given by Kayabalı et al. (2024) yield extremely high values of liquid limit (LL) and plastic limit (PL) when applied to dissimilar soils. Further, discussers argued that the approach proposed by Kayabalı et al. (2024) led to erroneous results in determining soil classes.

Abstract:
The frequency with which fake news or misinformation is published on social networks is constantly increasing. Users of social networks are confronted with many different posts every day, often with sensationalist titles and content of dubious veracity. The problem is particularly common in times of sensitive social or political situations, such as epidemics of contagious diseases or elections. As such messages can have an impact on democratic processes or cause panic among the population, many countries and the European Commission itself have recently stepped up their activities to combat disinformation campaigns on social networks. Since previous research has shown that there are no tools available to combat disinformation in the Croatian language, we proposed a framework to detect potentially misinforming content in the comments on social media. The case study was conducted with real public comments published on Croatian Facebook pages. The initial results of this framework were encouraging as it can successfully classify and detect disinformation content.

Abstract:
In this thesis, I present my published works in the broad field of medical microbiology. Over a period of thirty years I have worked in a range of settings,. including hospital and public health laboratories, major reference laboratories and academic science departments. I have studied significant public health issues associated with each position, and therefore, while there is no single theme in my work, the emphasis of my research has been very much on the development and validation of methods and their application to public health microbiology. My early work was on obligately anaerobic bacteria. I began to study Clostridium difficile during my doctoral research and continued for several years after I completed my PhD. My expertise in anaerobic microbiology led to several book chapters and ultimately to an undergraduate textbook and an edited volume on anaerobic microbiology methods. My work on anaerobic bacteria forms one of three themes in my commentary. During my tenure at the University of Ulster; I began to broaden my research to encompass pathogens in the environment. Areas of interest included the survival of pathogenic bacteria during anaerobic digestion of cattle slurry and the anaerobic bacterial flora of flax retting. I moved to the University of West Indies in Barbados, where for 13 years I taught microbiology to medical students and provided clinical microbiology support to the hospital and public health laboratories. This venue provided me with the opportunity to follow a diverse research agenda, with a strong concentration on diseases of local and regional public health importance. I have included some of this work in my third commentary theme, clinical and public health microbiology. My major contributions to the field have undoubtedly been in the diagnosis, taxonomy and epidemiology of leptospirosis. I began working on leptospirosis in 1992 in the former Medical Research Council laboratory in Barbados. My work here included both serological and molecular diagnostic studies, and epidemiological research on reservoir animals and other zoonotic diseases. After moving to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), my work was focussed on developing tools for molecular diagnosis and molecular typing of leptospires and on taxonomy of leptospires. At the CDC, I was also the Acting Chief of the Special Bacteriology Reference Laboratory. In this capacity, I had the opportunity to lead a group focussed on the identification and characterization of previously unrecognised bacterial pathogens. Some of this work is included in my third commentary theme. I moved to Saskatchewan in 2003, to my current position in the provincial public health laboratory. My research in Saskatchewan has been directed towards the use of molecular techniques for diagnosis and epidemiological typing of significant public health pathogens, while mentoring younger scientists. Community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus is a public health challenge in our communities and I have made significant contributions to a collaborative effort to understand and control these infections in Saskatchewan. In recent years I also have assumed a leadership role in biosafety and biosecurity regulatory issues and in quality assurance and proficiency testing. An abbreviated copy of my curriculum vitae is included to provide an indication both of the range of my research work and my other contributions to the field. In the interests of brevity, papers presented at conferences and published abstracts are not included.

Abstract:
Section B of this document summarises the coherent subset of my published research on which I have chosen to be examined (57 papers); and Section C lists all my publications, excluding conference proceedings and published abstracts. Individuals named as co-authors on publications are all those persons without whose assistance the work would not have been done. These include all research assistants provided by the Australian Research Grants Scheme, 1978-1984 and 1986—1988; and by the Australian Research Council in 1989. These Research Assistants are: D. White, 1978-1979; M. Johnson, 1980-1984; T. O’Connor, 1986; S. Johnstone, 1987; and R. van der Zwan, 1988-1989. With very few exceptions, in the case of the 53 papers papers to be examined and upon which I appear as first author, the initial idea, experimental design, some or all of the data collection, the data analysis, the writing of the manuscript and the figure preparation were all done by me. With reference to all of the 73 papers listed in Section C, those on which I appear as other than first author were Psychology IV Honours or MA students’ projects to which I contributed by assisting with the research and writing the paper (15, 16, 18, 20, 33, 58, 68, 71), collaborative efl‘orts in all respects with other staff at this or some other University (5, 6, 8, 9, 14, 25, 26, 34, 48, 51) or were papers to which I contributed substantially but judged that the research assistant’s contribution warranted first authorship (66, 72).

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract The aim of this doctoral thesis is to present methods of search, evaluation and analysis of a specific research domain (schizophrenia) from four perspectives: bibliometric analysis of 1) Finnish doctoral theses and 2) Finnish journal articles on schizophrenia, and meta-analysis to determine the prevalence of 3) alcohol use disorders and 4) cannabis use disorders in schizophrenia. Over the years, the number of Finnish articles on schizophrenia has increased, as well as the amount of international collaboration. Bibliometric methods were also found to be feasible in the evaluation of psychiatric research. However, the methods should be used with care. Articles written in collaboration with international organisations seem to receive more citations and are published in journals with higher impact factors, which highlights the importance of developing scientific networks. A considerable proportion (20%) of Finnish scientific schizophrenia articles were published in theses consisting of original papers. The current funding system supports the writing of doctoral thesis consisting of original articles and favours epidemiological and biological research over research into medical treatments. This may affect the research culture in Finland and even slow down the development and improvement of the national treatment system. The reported prevalence of alcohol and cannabis use disorders has differed considerably between studies. No meta-analysis on alcohol or cannabis use disorders in schizophrenia has previously been conducted. In studies (n = 71) on schizophrenia patients, the median prevalence was 15% for current and 26% for lifetime alcohol use disorder, and 16% for current and 27% for lifetime cannabis use disorder. Alcohol use disorders are common in schizophrenia patients, although a declining trend was observed when comparing previous reviews. Cannabis use disorders were found to be more common in younger and first-episode patient samples, as well as in samples with a high proportion of males.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper is based on an analytical study of 335 keywords extracted from titles and abstracts of 70 research articles, taking ten from each year starting from 2000 to 2006, in decreasing order of relevance, on the subject Fermi Liquid, which is a specific subject under the broad area of Condensed Matter Physics. The research articles have been collected from the bibliographic database of INSPEC. The keywords are indexed to critically examine its physical structure that is composed of three fundamental kernels, viz. keyphrase, modulator and qualifier. The keyphrase reflects the central concept, which is usually post-coordinated by the modulator to amend the central concept in accordance with the relevant context. The qualifier comes after the modulator to describe the particular state of the central concept and/or amended concept. The keywords are further classified in 16 classes on the basis of the four parameters, viz. Associativeness, chronological appearance, frequency of occurrence and category. The taxonomy of keywords will enable to analyze research-trend of a subject and to identify potential research-areas of a subject.

Macleod, Catriona, and Simon Howell. "Reflecting on South African psychology: published research, ‘relevance’ and social issues." SAGE Publications Ltd, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1006277.

Abstract:
As South Africa prepared to host the 30th International Congress of Psychology in 2012, a call was made to reflect on the strengths of and challenges facing contemporary South African Psychology. This paper presents our response to our brief to focus on social issues by presenting the results of a situational analysis of South African Psychology over the last five years and comparing this corpus of data to a similar analysis reported in Macleod (2004). Articles appearing in the South African Journal of Psychology (SAJP) and abstracts in PsycINFO with the keyword ‘South Africa’ over a 5½ year period were analysed. The content of 243 SAJP articles and 1986 PsycINFO abstracts were analysed using the codes developed by Macleod (2004). Results indicate: an increase in the number of articles, a reduction in the percentage of articles using quantitative methodologies and ‘hard’ science theoretical frameworks (particularly in the SAJP), and an increase in qualitative, theoretical, and methodological papers, and papers using systems-oriented theory (particularly in the SAJP). Traditional topics of assessment, stress and psychopathology continue to dominate, with social issues such as housing, land reform, development programmes, water resources and socio-economic inequities being largely ignored. Most research continues to be conducted in Gauteng, KwaZulu/Natal and the Western Cape, predominantly with adult, urban-based, middle-class participants, sourced mainly from universities, hospitals or clinics and schools. Collaborations or comparisons with other African, Asian, South American and Middle East countries have decreased. While the analysis presented in this paper is limited by its exclusion of books, theses, research reports and monographs, it shows that in published research there are some positive trends and some disappointments. The limited number of social issues featuring in published research, the under-representation of certain sectors of the population as participants, and the decrease in collaboration with, or comparison to, countries from the global ‘South’ represent challenges that require systematic attention.

Full text
Abstract:
This research project comprises a stage play Section 24 of the Criminal Code, and accompanying exegesis, which focuses upon the experience of a woman accessing the Criminal Justice system after she is raped. The play is in the verbatim model and draws upon court transcript, which is deconstructed to reveal the workings of Defence counsel 'storylines' and meta-narratives of gender, sexual availability and power. The exegesis investigates attitudes toward rape and rape victims perpetuated by Australian popular culture, and the way that myths about false rape complaints and 'deserving victims' continue to influence the reporting and conviction rates for rape. The thesis argues that recent reforms have yet to make an impact on the conviction rate or experience of women accessing the Justice system, because of entrenched misogyny within the system itself. Several factors contribute to widespread ignorance of the reality of our own Criminal Justice system, and the thesis proposes that a work of verbatim theatre may redress the paucity of understanding that enables the dysfunction of the current system. The paper explores the different approaches taken by Verbatim theatre practitioners and the appropriateness of the Verbatim theatre model for communicating this particular (lived) experience. Questions of ownership over one's story, and representation in that story indicate the emancipatory potential of a work. Where practitioners do not have a personal connection to their subject matter or material and access material that is already in the public domain, they may feel a greater freedom to manipulate story and character for dramatic effect, or to suit an activist agenda for change. It is shown that a playwright with a personal connection to her material and subject must address issues of ownership, ethical representation, veracity and verisimilitude when creating a piece of verbatim theatre. Preferencing the truth of the Complainant Woman's experience over the orthodoxies of the well-made play may contribute to a negative response to the work from male audiences. However, the thesis concludes that the subject of rape and its prosecution invokes a gendered response in itself, and ultimately questions the desirability of presenting a play that delivers a palatable story rather than an unpleasant truth.

Abstract:
Abstract Le pays des autres is the first novel of a trilogy published in 2020 in which the author, Leïla Slimani, narrates the arrival and adaptation of Mathide, a young Alsatian, to Meknes before the independence of Morocco. The novel, written in French, presents many cultural references through the use of loanwords and code-switching, which imbues the work with a linguistic and cultural heterogeneity as well as a sense of veracity and exotism. This study aims to identify these novel culturems, classify loanwords and moments of code-switching and carry out an analysis of the translation into Spanish, carried out by Malika Embarek López, in order to verify whether the linguistic and cultural richness of the original work has been retained.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract A corrosion rate prediction program was developed in 1984 based on the results of two research programs carried out between 1979 and 1984. Then based on the field experience and published case histories, the critical corrosive conditions and related parameters, for different services, were identified. Empirical references were introduced to make the correlation between the laboratory results and field data. Since then it has been continuously improved, by combining the research results, published works and especially field data, in order to extend the limits of its validity and its accuracy. For the validation of the model, the estimated corrosion rates have been compared to about 90 case histories (gas/oil lines and gas/oil wells) from 16 fields in the North Sea, Middle East, Far East and South America. Predicted corrosion rates and actual corrosion rates are of the same order of magnitude. The calculated corrosion rate is mainly dependent on temperature, quantity of dissolved CO2 in the water phase, water chemistry, characteristics of the produced fluid, flow velocity, flow regime and material composition. The paper describes the basic model and the modifications which have been introduced in order to use it for prediction of corrosion rates in both oil and gas production networks.

Abstract:
Research in innovation usually builds on conventional data such as balance sheets, surveys, patents, or product catalogs. This paper intends to explore unconventional data, specifically web-scraped data, as an information source for innovation studies, proposing a careful procedure to establish the veracity of the linkage between web-based data and firm-level information retrieved from conventional sources. The study regards a sample of Italian manufacturing small and medium enterprises active in 2016, comprehending both innovative and non-innovative firms. It is based on HTML tags, whilst most of the previous literature worked on the web-pages text and related semantics. Our paper provides evidence that the way HTML language is applied to build a corporate website unveils the capabilities of the owner firm, helping to distinguish innovative from non-innovative SMEs.

Full text
Abstract:
Research into the induction and conduction coupling response of a pipeline co-located with an electric power transmission line to assess the high voltage coupling response under fault conditions. Capacitive discharge tests were performed on primarily fusion bonded epoxy and coal tar enamel coatings containing discrete individual holidays (circa 1985). A pipeline coating response model to high voltage stress was developed, but questions arose within the pipeline community as to the veracity of capacitate discharge coating testing when the coupling was from overhead alternating current electric power transmission lines.

Full text
Abstract:
As part of ARL’s Research Library Impact Framework initiative, a team from the University of Pittsburgh Library System conducted a study to understand the information-seeking behavior of early-career faculty in the hard sciences. The team sought to learn how those faculty discover published content and if they use library-purchased commercial databases in the process. Additionally, the team wished to understand how much time and effort researchers invest when looking for content and what pain points they experience. Another objective of this project was to develop and evaluate a methodology for collecting and analyzing information about the library’s role in the research discovery process, for any part of the research life cycle. Thus, the results will guide library services, as well as shed light on ways libraries can support researchers in research discovery.

Veitch, Jennifer. CIE Research Strategy 2023. International Commission on Illumination, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.25039/vudfg44z.

Full text
Abstract:
The International Commission on Illumination (CIE) is a global non-profit organization dedicated to advancing knowledge and providing standardization to improve the lighted environment. Light and darkness form the fundamental rhythm of daily life for the planet and light reveals the details of the world around us. The CIE seeks to make possible the equitable and responsible provision of the proper light, in the proper place, at the proper time. Doing so is a critical element in humanity’s response to global environmental crises including climate change. Over 1 000 volunteer experts contribute to CIE committees to develop consensus on scientific fundamentals and application guidance that is published in the form of technical notes, technical reports and international standards. Continuing advances in scientific knowledge provide the foundation for new and revised CIE publications. The CIE Research Strategy identifies the topics that researchers should study now, so that the knowledge is available to support and guide the next generation of CIE reports and standards. First published in 2015, the CIE Research Strategy received minor updates in 2019 and 2020. The 2023 edition is a major revision and reflects the CIE’s aim to contribute to the achievement of the United Nations 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Full text
Abstract:
This report summarizes and synthesizes OpenSciEd research published as of August 2022, addressing two questions about OpenSciEd: (1) To what extent do teachers enact OpenSciEd units with integrity to its distinctive principles? and (2) To what extent do OpenSciEd teacher tools and professional learning experiences support teachers to enact OpenSciEd with integrity? This review includes 16 publications (journal articles, peer-reviewed conference proceedings, conference papers, doctoral dissertations, and published reports). Five of the papers focus on the design of OpenSciEd materials and do not have an empirical focus, seven have an empirical focus on classroom enactment, and four have an empirical focus on teacher supports. All but one of the papers were co-authored by affiliates of the OpenSciEd middle school development consortium, and all but one focus on the middle school grade band.

Jones, Rachel K., and Lisa Remez. Research on the Early Impact of Dobbs on Abortion, Births and Contraception: What We Know So Far. Guttmacher Institute, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.1363/2024.300556.

Full text
Abstract:
The US Supreme Court’s June 2022 decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization eliminated the federal constitutional right to abortion in the United States. This report provides a topline summary of the emerging body of research measuring the likely impact of the Dobbs decision on outcomes in four areas: abortion services and access, abortion incidence, incidence of births and contraceptive use. To locate peer-reviewed studies, we searched three academic databases (Google Scholar, PubMed and JSTOR) using the terms “abortion” AND (“Dobbs” OR “Roe”) and limited our summary to study findings published by April 30, 2024. Fewer than 10 peer-reviewed journal articles examining the impact of this legal decision had been published by that date (in part because the peer-review process can take months or years). Some studies were published in other formats, and we relied on internet searches, media coverage and institutional knowledge to locate the studies that had not been published in peer-reviewed journals. We also examined the references cited in research studies located by these searches. This report does not include every research publication we found (see Appendix below for a list of additional studies) and is limited to those most relevant to the four topic areas mentioned above. Our summary includes: 9 articles published in peer-reviewed journals 1 manuscript undergoing peer review and available via preprint 13 online reports, discussion papers and policy analyses Since April 30, 2024, additional studies have been published and many more are on the horizon. The studies summarized here reflect only the beginning of what will be a substantial body of research that provides valuable insights into how specific states’ policies affect their residents’ reproductive health and autonomy under changed conditions after the Dobbs decision.
