Abstract:
<p>The aim of the research to find and classify types of Idiomatic Expressions and Phrase Expressions in “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul” Film by David Bowers. In this research the researcher used qualitative approach, like analyze descriptive narration, a dialog or conversation. Meanwhile, for technique data research by content analysis research. The researcher used Lim’s theory to classify idiomatic expressions. In Lim’s theory there are 6 types of idioms, such as: idioms with phrasal verb, idioms with prepositional phrase, idioms with verbs as keyword, idioms with nouns as keyword, idioms with adjective as keyword, and idiomatic pairs. The result of this research showed that the film used 60 idiom expressions to express their feeling and thought. The researcher found 21 Phrasal Verbs, 19 Verb as Keywords, 8 Adjective as Keywords, 6 Noun as Keywords, 3 Prepositional Phrases and 3 Idiomatic pairs. The researcher used Ba’dulu’s theory to examine phrase expressions. In Ba’dulu’s theory there are 5 types of phrase, such as: noun phrase, verb phrase, prepositional phrase, adjective phrase, and adverb phrase. The result of this research showed that the film used 157 phrases. The researcher found 56 Noun Phrases, 48 Verb Phrases, 23 Prepositional Phrases, 18 Verb Phrases and 12 Adverb Phrases.</p><div> </div>

(1) Like many other Kwa languages, Anum employs a pattern of [ATR] vowel harmony that is regressive and [+ATR] dominant (RVH). This paper analyses RVH as a phrasal process which takes into account recursive phonological phrases. The proposal argues for an application of the process within and across non-maximal phonological phrases (φ) and a blocking of application across maximal phonological phrases (φmax). (2) Investigating RVH in Anum in more detail, the size of constituents and the complexity of sentence structures are varied. Target sentences were recorded and transcribed for [ATR] vowel harmony. (3) The empirical data show that RVH applies frequently between words that belong to either the same or to different syntactic constituents, but is blocked between two verb phrases of a serial verb construction and between any word and a following sentence-final time adverbial. Interestingly, RVH occurs between a sentence-initial subject constituent and a following verb or verb phrase, independent of the size of the subject constituent and the remaining number of words in the sentence. (4) The proposed OT analysis accounts for RVH within syntax-phonology Match Theory and addresses both word-level and phrase-level harmony. The special behaviour of subject constituents that prosodically phrase together with verbs and with constituents of the verb phrase (VP) is discussed. Either a phonological well-formedness constraint or a syntactically distinct input may account for phrasing effects with subject constituents in Anum.

Abstract:
An infinitival verb phrase is generated to express comparison in Bambara. In particular, the comparative verb INFINITIVE MARKER + INTRANSITIVE phrase has the structure: VERB + NP + POSTPOSITION. The structural constraints on the comparative verb phrase are not specific to comparison, but are the more general constraints resulting from concatenating verb phrases. However, a special structural and pragmatic relation is established between the head clause and the comparative infinitival verb phrase. This relation has consequences for the structure of the NP in the comparative phrase and for deletion of lexical items within the comparative phrase. In this respect, the comparative infinitival phrase behaves differently from non-comparative infinitival verb phrases.

Abstract:
A phrasal verb is a phrase consisting of standard verbs and one or two particles. The standard verb is like go, make, take. While the particles (s) used can be within the form of adverbs and/ or prepositions. Usually, a phrasal verb is often used in native-speaker dialogue and informal English writing. The purpose of this study is to describe transitive phrasal verbs. The method used in this research is a descriptive qualitative method. Linguistic data sources were taken from the British National Corpus. Data containing phrasal verbs are collected and then classified into several categories. Categories that are suitable for research purposes are separated and labeled and then explained in the narrative in accordance with the theory and research objectives. The results showed that transitive phrasal verbs consist of two types, namely separable and inseparable transitive phrasal verbs. A separable transitive phrasal verb is a type of phrasal verb whose particles are separated from the verb and inserted by the noun phrase as its object. In addition, particles must be separated from the verb if the object used is in the form of a pronoun. While inseparable transitive verbs are phrasal verbs that have a direct object but the particles are inseparable from the verb.

Abstract:
The verb phrase is built up of a verb, which is the head of the construction. Verb occurs as predicate in the rightmost position of a clause. As a predicate it selects arguments (Ex. Subject, Direct object, Indirect object and Locative NPs) and assigns case to its arguments and adverbial adjuncts. Another syntactic property of verbs in Tamil is that they can govern subordinate verb forms. Verb occurring as finite verbs in clause final position can be complemented by non-finite verbs proceeding them. The latter with respect to the interpretation of tense or subject governs these non-finite forms, being subordinate to the finite verb form. If we follow the traditional idea of having a VP node for Tamil, then all the elements, except the subject NP, will have to be grouped under VP.

Abstract:
The research objectives are: firstly to describe verb phrase types used in ‘Sociolinguistics: Goals, Approaches and Problems’ of Roger T. Bell. Secondly, to describe the equivalent forms of English verb phrase in ‘Sociolinguistics: Goals, Approaches and Problems’ of Roger T. Bell and its translation in ‘Sosiolinguistik: Sajian, Tujuan, Pendekatan dan Problem’ by Abdul Syukur Ibrahim. Thirdly, it also describes the appropriateness of meaning of English verb phrase and its Indonesian equivalent forms in the two books mentioned before. This study used the qualitative descriptive method with purposive sampling. The categorization of data was taken from English verb phrase of Randolph Quirk’s et.al. The criterion of data selection was based on the research objections; proportion; and percentage of the total of English verb phrase of each type. The data consists of 52 English verb phrases in 52 sentences. This study used grammar approach in terms of its textual and contextual of verb phrase in the sentence both in English and in Indonesian. The study results showed that the use of English verb phrases have some variation as below: 25 % is perfective type; 5.77 % is progressive type; 38.46 % is passive; 9.61% is perfective progressive; 17.31 % is perfective passive; 3.85 % is progressive passive. The equivalent form of English verb phrase consists of two groups. There is not rank shift on the equivalent form of English verb phrase on one hand and there is rank shift on the other hand. In the former, 36.54 % of English verb phrase is translated into Indonesian verb phrase too. In the later, there are some rank shift variations. 1.92 % is English verb phrase level rank shift in Indonesian noun phrase; 48.08 % is English verb phrase shunt down into Indonesian verb; 9.61 % is English verb phrase shunt up into Indonesian embedded clause; and 3.45 % is ellipsis of English verb phrase into Indonesian equivalent. There are three groups of the meaning appropriateness in this study. For the first, 38.46 % of English verb phrase is appropriately translated into Indonesian equivalent. Secondly, 46.15 % English verb phrase is half appropriately translated into Indonesian equivalent. Thirdly, 15.39 % of English verb phrase is translated into Indonesian inappropriately cause of misinterpretation. From the two of the ellipsis of English verb phrase in Indonesian equivalent, 1.92 % is translated appropriately and 1.92 % is translated inappropriately due to misinterpretation. A translator should study the phenomena of non-passive of English verb phrase into Indonesian verb accurately so that the appropriateness of its meaning can be reached. In addition the translator has to study the meaning of verb + preposition structure accurately in Indonesia. This structure must be attended by students seriously because it is standard form in English but it is not in Indonesia. Thirdly, 1.72 % of English verb phrase is translated into Indonesian inappropriately cause of deviation and 15.39 % of English verb phrase is translated into Indonesian inappropriately cause of misinterpretation. Abstract:
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effects of corpus-based error correction of writing on college students’ acquisition of verb phrases. For this study, 26 college students were chosen as participants and instructed to correct the errors shown in their writing using concordance program. In addition, the students completed the pre- and post-verb tests measuring the students’ acquisition of verb phrases. The results of this study are as follows: First, it was shown that verb phrase usage frequency rate was the highest in S+V+O pattern. In terms of verb phrase error frequency, it was the highest in S+V+O pattern and the second highest was in S+V+A pattern in both groups. The most frequent error types of verb phrase in the two patterns are presumed to result from the incorrect use of prepositions with verbs. Second, there was a significant difference between the two groups with regards to verb phrase error correction ratio according to the 7 sentence structure patterns. Higher error correction ratio indicates that there is improvement in accuracy, which leads to a better writing ability. Third, the pre- and post- verb tests showed that there was a 9% more improvement in the experimental group(12%) than in the control group(3%). In conclusion, the effects of corpus-based error correction contributed to the improvement of students’ acquisition of verb phrases. Finally, the data shows that when speaking in English students are most likely to use certain types of sentence patterns; S+V+O pattern, S+V+C pattern and S+V+A pattern. Considering those data results, it can be suggested that to improve the speaking ability of the students, teaching should be focused on practicing most frequently used sentence patterns.

We examine the distribution of Emai prepositional phrases and their NP complements relative to intransitive verbs. In canonical order constructions, vbi phrases follow a matrix verb as optional or obligatory constituents, or they follow the verb za in series before another matrix verb. In non-canonical order constructions, focused NP complements give rise to the verb za in series with only a subclass of intransitive verbs. Through lexical entry formats, we relate these distributional facts to distinct semantic roles and specific grammatical relations. Some vbi phrases show a complement relation for source and goal, but remaining phrases reflect inner locative complements or outer locative adjuncts, the latter signaled in focus constructions by za. We also comment on vbi prohibition outside the verb phrase and on its relationship to construal of affected object.

We examine the interaction between viewpoint aspect and imperative mood in an under-described and endangered Edoid language of West Africa. In Emai, tone functions both lexically and grammatically. Verbs in citation form, including bisyllabic items, are toneless. In declarative mood Emai distinguishes perfective from imperfective, with perfective assigning high tone to a verb and imperfective assigning low. Imperative mood takes perfective aspect, most clearly evident when an auxiliary or preverb precedes the verb or when the imperative is negated. In simpler imperatives, verb tone is low high. The low tone is conditioned by the juxtaposition of a subject phrase that shows a second person pronoun with high tone and a verb phrase whose initial syllable is high. Across phrasal constitutents, consecutive high tones, as they would have appeared in simpler imperatives, are prohibited. It is the verb phrase initial high syllable that lowers.

Mizan Where KKPK is a place to put the works of the nation's children to be published in writing, both in the form of novels or short stories. Because the novels or other works contained in the KKPK (Small-Owned Works), are specialized containers for children and adolescents aged 7-12 years, the sentences used pay attention to the sentence patterns that can be understood by their circles. This study aims to analyze the verb phrases found in the 12-year-old Prinsess Sayaka Novel by Salma Izatunnuha. This research belongs to a descriptive qualitative research. Where the data used in this study in the form of a set of words that form a verb phrase in Novel Princess Sayaka. The process of collecting data is by reading, marking and taking notes. The results of this study are that there are several verb phrases in the novel Princess Sayaka, the form of the phrase used is also a word that is often found in everyday life. Based on the results of research conducted along with the discussion, the conclusion is the verb phrase is a phrase in which the central element is a verb or verb. Verbal phrases have 3 types, namely: modification verb phrases, coordinative verb phrases, and apositive verb phrases. Of these three types of verb phrases, in Princess Sayaka's novel there are only modificative and coordinative verb phrases.

Abstract:
Light verb constructions (German Funktionsverbgefüge = FVGs) are complex predicates consisting of a semantically light verb, which has lost its lexical meaning and just has a functional role, and a noun phrase (with or without preposition). The noun occurring in FVGs is an abstract noun derived from a verb and can be combined with another phrasal elements. FVGs are semantically a specific category of noun-verb-phrases between idioms and collocations because they share characteristics with both categories. The paper outlines the topological properties of FVGs, especially of the noun phrases, which are perhaps the most underrated aspect of FVGs and has not been the subject of intense linguistic research. The syntactic function of the noun phrase arouses much controversy in grammatical descriptions and may be cause of language mistakes or even errors. Based on modern linguistic descriptions of FVGs we then focus on the linear position of the noun and its attributes in central-verbal clauses (German Verb-Zweit-Sätze) and in final-verbal clauses (German Verb-Letzt-Sätze) and conditions of the realization of the so-called Nachfeld and Vorfeld syntactic fields.

Abstract:
In traditional Ancient Greek grammar, the term constructio praegnans refers to an apparent syntactic anomaly whereby the idea of motion is missing from either the verb or the prepositional phrase: a verb that does not express motion is combined with a directional prepositional phrase (e.g., ‘slaughter into a container’) or a motion verb combines with a static prepositional phrase describing a goal of motion (e.g., ‘throw in the fire’). This study explores such usages in the period from Archaic to Classical Greek and argues against treating constructio praegnans as a unitary phenomenon. The seemingly aberrant combinations of the verb’s meaning and the type of prepositional phrase are shown to be motivated by four independent factors: 1) lexical (some individual non-motion verbs select for a directional argument); 2) aspectual (static encoding of endpoints is allowed with perfect participles); 3) the encoding of results with change of state verbs; and 4) the archaic use of static prepositional phrases in directional contexts (the goal argument of a motion verb is described by a static prepositional phrase). The four types of “pregnant” use are paralleled by different phenomena in other languages. Based on statistical analysis, they are also argued to undergo different kinds of diachronic development. Some of these developments, nevertheless, fall into a more general pattern: Ancient Greek gradually moves toward a more consistent use of specialized directional expressions to mark goals of motion, conforming increasingly to the “satellite-framed” type of motion encoding.

Abstract:
This study aims at analyzing the syntactic structure of the verb phrase and its translation process occurred. This study also analyzes the kinds of shifts of verb phrase occurred in the translation process from English into Indonesia. This study is a descriptive qualitative study. The theory used in analyzing data is the theory proposed by Catford and Radford (1988). The theory used in analyzing the data source is the theory in translation especially in shifts of translation and the theory in syntax in order to analyze the verb phrases found in the data source. There are 12 verb phrases as data of this study. The verb in the data source can be categorized as an Indonesian verb. It can be seen from the text that is available in the data source, that the verb phrase in the source language can be transferred into an Indonesian verb in the target language Then, there are some steps applied in this study, the first step of this research is to collect the data source found in the novel The Budha, a Story of Enlightenment. The second step is to read and identify the text in the novel The Budha, a Story of Enlightenment containing the verb phrase. The next step is to take some texts, analyze and interpret the data, and finally draw a conclusion. The verb phrase found in the novel The Budha, a Story of Enlightenment was identified by the researcher. And this study continued in analyzing the translation process occurred. The result of translation analysis of the text shows that there is a shift occurred in all the 12 processes of translating English verb phrase into Indonesian. 8 are classified as changing into lower rank and 4 are classified as changing into a higher rank.

The Banjar Hulu language is used as the majority language used by the people of Indragiri Hilir Regency Riau. However, due to the flow of modernization and assimilation will threaten the extinction and contamination of the Banjar Hulu language. Therefore, this research is expected to maintain and maintain the authenticity of Banjar Hulu language, so it is necessary to do research. This study focuses on the structure of verb phrases. With related issues about the shape or structure of the verb phrase. The purpose of the study is to describe in detail the structure of the Banjar Hulu language verb phrase. This research is a field research with qualitative type. This research was conducted in Suhada Village, Enok Sub-district, Indragiri Hilir Regency, Riau with research time for six months. The method used to collect data is by the technique of referring libat ably. The data of this research is phrase construction that comes from the speech of research informant. Data analyzing is done by technique of reduction, disply, and conclusion data. The results showed that there are various verbal phrases. This kevariasian found verbal language phrases Banjar Hulu language based on the class of formers and verbal phrase forming function, namely coordinative verbal phrases, modifikatif, and apositif. Abstract:
The research was caused by several problems that were discovered in students' writing recount text. First, students make errors in their sentences. One error that occurs in their sentences is the omission of verbs. Students make sentences without verbs in writing recount text. Secondly, students only arrange sentences based on the words in the dictionary so that it causes mother tongue interference. This research aimed to investigate the errors in students' writing at syntactical error and causes of error in students' writing. The research used descriptive qualitative research. The data was collected from the students' writing recount in class 11 A of MA Mualimin Muhammadiyah Boarding School Sawah Dangka. The technique of data analysis in this research was identification, classification, explanation, and evaluation. The finding of the research shows, Firstly. Syntactical errors occurred in the omission, addition, misformation, and misordering, which included noun phrases, verb phrases, and verb and verb construction. Noun phrases included determiner, pronoun, and preposition. Verb phrase included the omission of verb and subject and verb agreement. Then, verb and verb construction. Secondly, the two major causes of errors were interlingual transfer and intralingual transfer.

This research investigates language phenomenon of verb-particle construction with particle off in English. This attempts to describe grammatical construction of verb-particle off. This research was conducted by descriptive-qualitative research method. The implementation of this method was through a number of stage: data gathering, analyzing data, and presenting the result of the data analysis. The stage of analyzing the data was performed by using distributional and identification method with a number of techniques. This study found that verb-particle construction can be distinguished from verb-preposition construction by implementing some of construction alternations, which are (1) noun phrase as object can be put in between the verb and the particle or after the particle; (2) coordinate noun phrase as object with the phrasal verb; (3) moving noun phrase to the left by itself is acceptable if without particle, that this indicate the noun phrase is a unit, but moving the particle and the noun phrase is not acceptable, since they do not form a phrase. The argument structure of verb-particle with off consists of intransitive, transitive, and ditransitive. The argument’s role of verb-particle off can take action as agent, patient, and potential agent.

Two experiments were performed to investigate the role of syntactic and pragmatic cues on the disambiguation of noun phrases of the form VERB+ing NOUN+s, like visiting relatives, that can be interpreted as either singular or plural noun phrases. Both experiments used a self-paced reading task in which reading times were measured for two words, a verb and an adverb, immediately following the potentially ambiguous noun phrase. The interpretation of the noun phrase as singular or plural was biased by pragmatic cues in the first experiment and by syntactic cues in the second experiment. In both experiments, subjects were faster to read the adverb following the verb when the interpretation biased by the cues agreed in number with the verb that immediately followed the target noun phrase than when it did not agree with the verb. These results suggest that pragmatic cues, like syntactic cues, can be utilized rapidly in sentence processing.

Light verb constructions (e.g., give a kiss to somebody) syntactically reflect typical ditransitive structures (e.g., give a violin to somebody) yet it is not clear whether these two structures thematically similar as well. We tested Turkish-speaking adults on their construal of light verb constructions with respect to the number of thematic roles they perceive in the event structure in a rating study. The light verb give with a different noun phrase was used in all critical utterances (e.g., give a response or give an assignment). The noun phrases of these constructions denominalized either by -lA or -lAn+dIr morpheme (e.g., response-lA and assignment-lAn+dIr) were also used as control items. The study concluded that the light verbs with their noun phrase complements contribute to the semantic construal of the event structure and the thematic role assignment processes for the denominalized versions of these structures reflect this meaning construal.

We propose that for the syntax–prosody mapping of clauses and intonational phrases, the notion of ‘clause’ should be determined in a flexible manner, making reference to the highest position to which the verbal material (i.e. the verb itself, the inflection, an auxiliary or a question particle) is overtly moved or inserted, together with the material in its specifier. This contrasts with rigid approaches, which assume that mapping is based on particular functional heads. We provide support for this proposal with data from the Bantu language Bàsàá and the Finno-Ugric language Hungarian, showing that a left-peripheral constituent may be prosodically outside the core intonational phrase even though its syntactic position is relatively low, as long as the verb is even lower, and, conversely, that a constituent may be phrased inside the core intonational phrase even if it is in a syntactically high position, as long as the verb is also high.

Abstract In this structural overview, I will focus on the morphology with a brief discussion of phonology and syntax for the reason that Athapaskan, as a "polysynthetic" language, has a very complex morphological structure of the verb. In terms of the number of segments, Athapaskan is one of the richest in the inventory of the consonants, which include three series of obstruents (plain, aspirated, and glottalized). Particularly rich is the inventory of affricates, which include, for most Athapaskan languages, three sets (dental, lateral, and palatal). The major lexical categories include verbs, nouns, and postpositions. Minor categories include deictic-demonstratives, numerals, locatives, adverbials, etc. Nouns and postpositions are morphologically identical in that they inflect with the same set of personal prefixes, marking a possessor for nouns and object for postpositions. But nouns and postpositions are different syntactically because only nouns function as a subject or direct object, whereas postpositions play other syntactic functions often incorporated into the verb. The verb morphology is characterized by a complex prefix structure as well as stem variation marking not only tense /aspect I mode, but also such other features as number and what are known to be the characteristics of the so-called 'classificatory' verbs. Athapaskan verbs are known for more or less a dozen prefix positions, although not all of these positions are filled for a particular verb. The classificatory verb system, which includes half a dozen or more alternating stems, is the most interesting and intriguing morphosemantic characteristic of the Athapaskan language, which would be particularly interesting to interpreters and translators. The syntactic structures involving the third and fourth person pronominal prefixes have been the most lively theoretical issue. Athapaskan is a verb-final language and a verb alone often represents a sentence. Typically the subject noun phrase and verb phrase are the first and last constituents of the sentence where other constituents, e.g. adverb, a postpositional phrase (indirect object) and direct object noun phrase occur between these two constituents. Relative clause and direct I indirect discourse are the best known noun phrase and verb phrase complementations, whereas topicalization and extraposition are the two best known movement rules in Athapaskan.

Elliptical verb phrases are anaphoric expressions whose correct interpretation depends on the exact form of the preceding text as well as its meaning. However, people are not very good at remembering surface details of what they read or hear, so how do they understand such expressions? One alternative to a linguistically based interpretation of elliptical verb phrases is to assign them meanings that are plausible, given general knowledge about the situation being described. In an experiment, subjects read passages in which context provided a plausible interpretation for an elliptical verb phrase that either was or was not at odds with the linguistically correct interpretation. There was a tendency for subjects to assign plausible, but incorrect, meanings to elliptical verb phrases. This tendency increased with the distance between the elliptical verb phrase and its antecedent. Incorrect interpretations were assigned slowly, and the speed of assignment increased with distance from the antecedent. These results suggest that people try to interpret elliptical verb phrases correctly, but that they are not always able to do so. Furthermore, they indicate that the intuition that elliptical verb phrases are easy to interpret is misleading. If text is to be comprehensible, speakers and writers must use such expressions with care.

It also analyses the structure of the verb phrase in Tὲὲ, a language spoken in Tai Local Government Area of Rivers State. The verb phrase is a syntactic unit composed of at least one verb and its dependents and other modifiers but not always including the subject. The verb is central in every language coupled with the fact that it is the most important and widely described phrase because the structure of and the meanings expressed in many languages revolves around the verb word. The research focuses to explore the peculiarities of the verb phrase in the language focusing basically on the structure of the verb phrase and the meaning generated thereof. It focuses on the features of the verb phrase in Tὲὲ; the constituent that make it up, their arrangement as well as the meaning attributed by such arrangements. The primary data for this work were collected using the intuitive knowledge of the researcher as a native speaker verified with unstructured interview with competent native speakers. From the analysis of the data collected, the researcher discovered that the verb phrase in Tὲὲ can have various configurations. The constituents that may combine with the head of a verb phrase to project it into a larger structure are the complements and the adjuncts. The complement of the verb phrase can be the noun phrase, the prepositional phrase and the inherent complement. The adverbial functions both as complement and adjunct in the language.

Chinese verb separation is a grammatical construction in which a bimorphemic verb compound separates and expands into a verb phrase. For example, to say “sang one song”, one must insert the aspect marker le and classifier phrase yī shǒu between the verb chàng gē ‘sing-song’ as in chàng le yī shǒu gē (sing-LE-one-classifier-song). Adult second language (L2) learners face at least three problems related to acquiring verb separation: separation patterns are complex and numerous, classroom oral input is limited, and L1 transfer often fails. To better understand L2 learners’ acquisition of verb separation, this study tested 28 adult L2-Chinese classroom learners. Three tasks were administered online: verb decomposition, grammaticality judgment, and oral translation. On average, only 37% of verbs were accurately decomposed, 63% of verbs were accurately judged to be grammatical, and 19% of verbs were orally produced with the correct separation pattern. Chinese verb separation, particularly decomposition and oral production, is thus extremely challenging for L2 learners to acquire—even for advanced learners with a relatively large vocabulary size. The results are discussed in terms of the Unified Competition Model and L2 Chinese pedagogy.

This article is based on the results of a study dealing with the various classes of Italian verbs (modals, aspectuels, verbs of movement, progressives, avere da + infinitive) that attract the clitic pronouns from their base position. Their "climbing" is accounted for by excluding any sentence boundary in the domain of the clitic movement. Since this is exactly the traditional structure of the verb-auxiliary relationship, the following hypothesis is made: the verb phrases of a single sentence comprise, in addition to the main verb, an indefinite number of complementary verbs (the ones listed above plus the temporal/aspectual and passive auxiliaries). As a result, their distribution becomes unpredictable and is complicated further by the possible reiteration of certain verbs in the phrase. An account for this on the basis of structural rules is thus quite difficult. Therefore, it is proposed that the complementary verbs are freely generated in the base through a recurrent rule associated with some strategies of meaning interpretation.

Verb Phrase Ellipsis (VPE) is a linguistic phenomenon, where some verb phrases as syntactic constituents are omitted and typically referred by an auxiliary verb. It is ubiquitous in both formal and informal text, such as news articles and dialogues. Previous work on VPE resolution mainly focused on manually constructing features extracted from auxiliary verbs, syntactic trees, etc. However, the optimization of feature representation, the effectiveness of continuous features and the automatic composition of features are not well addressed. In this paper, we explore the advantages of neural models on VPE resolution in both pipeline and end-to-end processes, comparing the differences between statistical and neural models. Two neural models, namely multi-layer perception and the Transformer, are employed for the subtasks of VPE detection and resolution. Experimental results show that the neural models outperform the state-of-the-art baselines in both subtasks and the end-to-end results.

Abstract This paper explores the links between Spanish verb-noun (VN) compounds and verb phrases (VPs) (limpiabotas lit. ‘clean+boots’ ‘shoe shine’/limpiar botas ‘to clean boots’), particularly between those with idiomatic meaning (metepatas lit. ‘put+paws’ ‘bungler’/meter la pata lit. ‘put the paw’ ‘to put your foot in it’). I discuss the theoretical implications of different accounts of the phrase-compound divide, namely, whether or not compounds are created by rules of a different nature than those for phrases (lexicalist vs. neoconstructionist approaches), and whether or not VN compounds can be derived from phrases through applying any kind of transformation. I show that VN compounds share key properties with VPs which could justify their treatment as syntactic objects. By contrast, the VN compound pattern presents unique restrictions that challenge the empirical adequacy of derivational approaches, which are likely to overgenerate ill-formed compounds from existing phrases. Once stored as lexical objects, however, VN compounds and VP idioms may evidence strong semantic connections as illustrated by the pair metepatas/meter la pata, which suggests the need to carefully examine lexical associations to ensure a balanced understanding of the phrase-compound divide.

An adverb gives information about the manner, time, place, frequency, or certainty. Adverbials are words groups in which an adverbial phrase tells us something about the verb. It is called adverbial of manner. The research aims to find out the translation of manner adverb. In a recent article, Boers, Demecheleer, Coxhead, and Webb (2014) deplored the lack of effectiveness for the learning of verb–noun collocations of a number of exercise formats which they sampled from EFL textbooks and put to the test in a series of quasi-experimental trials. The authors called for further investigations into possible improvements to such exercise formats. The present article is a response to that call. It also addresses methodological issues that may have affected Boers et al.’s (2014) findings and that rendered their conclusions tentative. In the quasi-experiment reported here, EFL learners were given fill-in-the-blank exercises on verb–noun phrases in one of three formats: (1) choose the appropriate verb, (2) complete the verb by using a first-letter cue, and (3) choose the appropriate intact phrase. A delayed post-test gauged the learners’ ability to recall the meaning of the phrases as well as their verb–noun partnership. In both regards the exercise where learners worked with intact phrases generated the best results. We then evaluate the extent to which exercises for phrase learning in 10 recent EFL textbooks accord with recommendations that follow from the quasi-experimental findings.

In this article, I present evidence for hierarchy and movement in Warlpiri, the proto-typical nonconfigurational language. Within the verb phrase, I identify both a symmetric and an asymmetric applicative construction, show that these are problematic for an LFG-style account that claims Warlpiri has a flat syntactic structure, and outline an account of the symmetric/asymmetric applicative distinction based on a hierarchical syntactic structure. Above the verb phrase, I establish syntactic hierarchy through ordering restrictions of adverbs, and ordering of topics, wh-phrases, and focused phrases in the left periphery. Finally, I present evidence that placement of phrases in the left periphery is accomplished through movement, with new data that show island and Weak Crossover effects.

Background. Lexical bundles in textbooks are of paramount importance in foreign language learning. They provide a framework for new vocabulary acquisition and help to build fluency. Despite many studies on lexical bundles, investigations into their usage in EFL textbooks in the Indonesian context are still rare. Purpose. This corpus-based study examines the patterns and structural classifications of lexical bundles in EFL course textbooks for Indonesian senior high school students. As such, it could yield ready-made chunks of English which could be incorporated into students’ spoken and written communication. Method. The AntConc software version 3.5.9 was used to extract lexical bundles from five Indonesian Senior High School English textbooks. These books were endorsed by the government to be used across the country. The corpus revealed that the textbooks had 54,009 lexical bundles. In addition, the bundles were categorized into patterns and structural classifications based on Biber et al. (1999). Results. The results showed the patterns included three-word lexical bundles with 32,527 occurrences, four-word with 11,620, five-word with 6,073, and six-word with 3,789. Furthermore, eleven structural classifications of lexical bundles were found in the textbooks: “noun phrase + of phrase fragment” with 173 occurrences; “noun phrase + other post modifier fragment” with 44; “other noun phrases fragment” with 157; “prepositional phrase + of” with 13; “other prepositional phrases” with 243; “anticipatory it + verb phrase/adjective phrase” with 13; “passive verb + prepositional phrase” with 19; “copula be + noun phrase/ adjective phrase” with 30; “(verb phrase +) that- clause” with 59; and “(verb/adjective +) to- clause” with 239. Conclusion. Three-word lexical bundles were the most frequent in the senior high English textbooks. High frequency implies repetition of the bundles. Also, the other prepositional phrase fragment was the most frequent structural classification. Short bundles may have been intended to help students to retain vocabulary and recall the bundles in the usage. This study, therefore, provides valuable insights into the most common groups of words used in the Indonesian EFL textbooks. Pedagogically speaking, repeated bundles in English textbooks can familiarize EFL students with the patterns, and they can use them in spoken and written communication.

Manga is a literary work that is in great demand by all circles, from young people to adults. In the manga, there are many sentences that use verb valence. Verb valence is the presence of verb-accompanying nouns or nouns in the syntax structure of a clause or sentence, which serves as an object, complement, or both. The verb contained in the sentence, must have a noun or nomina phrase behind it, which is called a transitive verb, then a verb that does not require the presence of a nomina or nomina phrase behind it is called an intransitive or untransitive verb. Barakamon manga is a manga that is in demand by the general public, anime enthusiasts, Japanese language learners, and students. In this study, researchers analyzed verb valence in the Barakamon manga. This study aims to determine the type of verb valence in the Barakamon manga. This type of research is qualitative research using descriptive methods. The data in this study are verb-valence sentences contained in the Barakamon manga. The source of the data taken is a sentence in the manga Barakamon Act.1. This research uses Verhaar's theory. Based on the results of the study, three types of verb valence were found, namely verbs with one valence there were 48 data, verbs with two valence there were 23 data, three-valence verbs were not found, with syntax roles and functions contained in sentences.

The present research is about analysis on ungrammatical constructions encountered in the texts written by the 3rd semester undergraduate students of English Language Education Program of Tanjungpura University. The objective of the study is to describe the types of the ungrammatical constructions and the causes of the ungrammatical constructions. The method of research is descriptive. The research participants were 34 students of the 3rd semester undergraduate students of English Language Education Program of Tanjungpura University. The data were collected from corpus written by the students. The ungrammaticalities occurred in the students’ text. They were 496 errors encountered by the students. 312 errors related to phrasal errors and 184 related to clausal errors. The phrasal-related errors affected the area of noun phrase (37%), gerund phrase (13%), verb phrase (17%), infinitive phrase (12), prepositional phrase (12%), adjective phrase (7%), and adverb phrase (2%). The clausal-related errors were alternating form (49%), omission (33%), simple addition (15%), double marking (2) and misplaced subject and verb (1%). The sources of these errors were interlingual (2,9%) and intralingual (97,1%).

Here we address the contentious issue of how nouns and verbs are represented in the brain. The co-occurrence of noun and verb deficits with damage to different neural regions has led to the view that they are differentially represented in the brain. Recent neuroimaging evidence and inconsistent lesion–behavior associations challenge this view. We have suggested that nouns and verbs are not differentially represented in the brain, but that different patterns of neural activity are triggered by the different linguistic functions carried by nouns and verbs. We test these claims in a functional magnetic resonance imaging study using homophones—words which function grammatically as nouns or verbs but have the same form and meaning—ensuring that any neural differences reflect differences in grammatical function. Words were presented as single stems and in phrases in which each homophone was preceded by an article to create a noun phrase (NP) or a pronoun to create a verb phrase (VP), thus establishing the word's functional linguistic role. Activity for single-word homophones was not modulated by their frequency of usage as a noun or verb. In contrast, homophones marked as verbs by appearing in VPs elicited greater activity in the left posterior middle temporal gyrus (LpMTG) compared to homophones marked as nouns by occurring in NPs. Neuropsychological patients with grammatical deficits had lesions which overlapped with the greater LpMTG activity found for VPs. These results suggest that nouns and verbs do not invariably activate different neural regions; rather, differential cortical activity depends on the extent to which their different grammatical functions are engaged.

Abstract This paper studies the “one+verbal classifier” sequence tsi̍t-ē that appears after an indefinite object complement in Taiwanese Southern Min. We call it the post-complement (PC) tsi̍t-ē. While the tsi̍t-ē sequence can be a durative phrase when it is immediately preceded by a verb, the PC tsi̍t-ē cannot be replaced by the durative phrase tsi̍t-ē-á ‘a while’ (tsi̍t-ē plus the diminutive suffix á) or other durative phrases. We show that the PC tsi̍t-ē is a sentence-final particle, not a durative phrase serving as a predicate or complement. Moreover, it marks delimitativity, which means ‘termination in a short time.’ It is the same kind of delimitativity that verb reduplication in Mandarin Chinese expresses despite the fact that the latter targets on the verb and is more selective in terms of the verb types that it can occur with. Moreover, the PC tsi̍t-ē carries the ‘down-play’ meaning. Syntactically, we suggest that it heads an AspP, which occurs above a vP.

This article aims at discussing verb-noun compounds with a locative prefix in the nominal part of the compounds in Cinyanja. The singular and plural forms of the compounds have been presented to show that the complex forms are nouns. With regard to the internal structure, the compounds show that they have a phrasal structure. Since verb-noun compounds in this study resemble the structure of synthetic compounds in English, the analysis of these words followed the syntactic approach. The results show that internally, the compounds with a locative have a verb phrase internal structure, and follow the verb-argument word order. In the syntactic context, it is shown that the compounds with the phrasal internal structure function as determiner phrases because they can appear in the subject and object positions in simple sentences and relative clauses. Further, the entire compound word can be modified by adjectives, and be coordinated with simple nouns, which suggests that the compounds with a locative are indeed determiner phrases. Finally, with the application of the lexical integrity hypothesis, the results reveal that the compounds with the locative in the nominal part are genuine compounds because they adhere to the lexical integrity principle.

Inverting wh-exclamative sentences with an overt complementizer in languages like Spanish pose a serious challenge to traditional accounts of obligatory subject-verb inversion. Such analyses assume either T-to-C movement or Spec,TP as an A-bar position capable of hosting wh-phrases and subjects alike. The optional presence of a complementizer in the head of CP in exclamatives prevents the verb from moving to CP, which argues against an analysis of inversion wherein the verb moves to Cº. Regarding the Spec,TP-as-an-A-bar-position account, if the wh-phrase sits in Spec,TP and competes with the subject for that position, the presence of a complementizer below wh-phrases in exclamatives is then rather mysterious, since que ‘that’ is standardly assumed to signal the presence of CP structure –not IP/TP structure. However, for those cases in which the complementizer occurs, a combined approach consisting of a modification of the Spec,TP-as-an-A-bar-position account which assumes further movement of the exclamative wh-phrase to a CP-related/left-peripheral projection headed by the complementizer is shown to be empirically superior to the competing proposals on the market. Furthermore, dialect data show that the presence of que is sensitive to the type of exclamative phrase in its specifier. The inverting exclamative data with overt que also indicate that it is the full projection consisting of the exclamative wh-phrase in the specifier plus the overt complementizer in the head that needs to be adjacent to the verb in such environments.

The informants have fulfilled the requirements given by the researcher. The approach used in this study was bilingual approach, instead of monolingual approach, that is, by asking the informants to translate the words (phrases) from Bahasa Indonesia to Maybrat language. The result of this research is the phrase of Maybrat language divided into two kinds as general, they are endocentric and exocentric phrase. It is also classified into noun phrase, pronoun phrase, verb phrase, adjective phrase and pre(post) position phrase. Each phrase has its own pattern. Some of them are similar into English and Indonesian, but some are really different.

In a previous article I have examined shifts of noun phrase forms in Qur'anic narrative texts and found that this kind of shift is strictly associated with the construction of texts and development of stories. It was also found that other categories such as voice, aspect and tense are connected with the shifts of these noun phrase forms. In the present paper I first confirm the argument made in my previous paper: that forms of noun phrases are markers of point of view in narratives. Next, the correlations between these noun phrase forms and various verb forms are inquired into, and the effect of using different noun phrase forms and verb forms in the texts is discussed. The argument is restricted to narratives because these realise textual coherence more than the early fragmentary revelations, and because the points of view in these narratives can be examined through the various persons coming into the stories. In addition, this study focuses on definite noun phrases rather than indefinite ones as, other than when they are first introduced into the texts, the referents in these stories are referred to with definite noun phrases, or more strictly speaking, a number of prophets and other famous persons are frequently introduced with definite noun phrases.

In collecting the data, researcher used note taking. The result shown that researcher find some phrases form. The analysis was recommended by the researcher as a teaching media since its accordance with the English teaching syllable.

The aim of this study is to find out grammatical most frequently made by the student in writing descriptive text. This study was quantitative and qualitative method. The population of this study is Students' English Department of Muhammadiyah University. The writer chose 23 students as the sample. In this study, collect the data used observation, writing test, and documentation. The result shows there were 328 items of error in the students’ writing. The percentage of errors made by students in writing descriptive text are noun phrase 49,7%, verb phrase36,3%, adjective phrase 8,8%and adverb phrase5,2%. The writer finds that the grammar errors that most of the students made were in noun phrases, with a cumulative total of 163 errors or 49.7%. From the research findings, it is suggested learners have to use these errors as a means to study more about correct the use of grammar in descriptive texting, especially in the use of noun phrases, verb phrases, and adjectives. For teachers to work harder on noun phrases and verb phrases because they are the most frequent failures that are made by students in their writing.
