Abstract In this contribution, we study the use of the German verbs stehen (‘to stand’), sitzen (‘to sit’) and their causative equivalents stellen (‘to put in a standing position’) and setzen (‘to put in a sitting position’) in noun-verb phrases, such as an der Spitze stehen (lit. ‘to stand at the top’ = ‘to be at the top’) or auf die Beine stellen (lit. ‘to put upright on the legs’ = ‘to achieve’). Among these phrases we are looking more particularly at the subcategory of complex noun-verb phrases which are commonly referred to as Funktionsverbgefüge in German. Numerous examples from the corp

The article deals with the fixed verb combinations of the German language from the point of view of cognitive linguistics. As the material under study, fixed verb combinations are presented, built according to the type “verb + (preposition) + noun”. The author dwells on four German verbs (stehen, stellen, schließen, fassen) and possible combinations with them. The examples under consideration are combined into groups where different nouns are used with one verb, usually of an abstract nature. An attempt is made to analyze conceptual schemes that model fragments of the surrounding reality and t

Abstract Several studies have described the semantic uses of German posture verbs, but only few have dealt with German placement verbs. The present study wants to make up for this gap. Starting from a collection of examples from the core corpora of the Digitales Wörterbuch der Deutschen Sprache (DWDS) and some former studies on posture verbs, it first describes the variety of the most common German placement verbs stellen (‘to put upright’), legen (‘to lay down’), setzen (‘to set’) and stecken (‘to stick’).

AbstractThe Chatterton Astronomy Department of the University of Sydney is proposing the construction of a very high angular resolution stellar interferometer of major astronomical and international significance. Based on the prototype modern Michelson stellar interferometer which the Department has developed, the new instrument will be used in a wide range of astrophysical programmes. The siting, specification, design and costing of the instrument are outlined.

AbstractTraditional photoelectric techniques can achieve millimagnitude precision if a few simple rules are scrupulously followed. We illustrate the practical limits of differential photometry obtained with a dedicated telescope and photometer. Using a highly homogeneous set of measurements of bright F, G, and K solar analog stars, we present the distribution of observational noise and intrinsic stellar variability over a typical observing season and over the entire 8-year program. Finally, we list Strömgren uvby standards which we found to vary slightly.
