Abstract:
AbstractWe used free association and verbal fluency tasks to investigate verb-argument constructions (VACs) and the ways in which their processing is sensitive to statistical patterns of usage (verb type-token frequency distribution, VAC-verb contingency, verb-VAC semantic prototypicality). In experiment 1, 285 native speakers of English generated the first word that came to mind to fill the V slot in 40 sparse VAC frames such as `he ____ across the. . . .', `it ____ of the. . . .', etc. In experiment 2, 40 English speakers generated as many verbs that fit each frame as they could think of in a minute. For each VAC, we compared the results from the experiments with corpus analyses of verb selection preferences in 100 million words of usage and with the semantic network structure of the verbs in these VACs. For both experiments, multiple regression analyses predicting the frequencies of verb types generated for each VAC show independent contributions of (i) verb frequency in the VAC, (ii) VAC-verb contingency and (iii) verb prototypicality in terms of centrality within the VAC semantic network. VAC processing involves rich associations, tuned by verb type and token frequencies and their contingencies of usage, which interface syntax, lexis and semantics. We consider the implications for the mental representation of VACs.

Abstract:
The authors discuss the changes in the meaning and usage of the verb raditi in modern Croatian standard language. This verb is more and more frequently used with partially emptied meaning and followed by a noun in the accusative case. The verb raditi is used in stead of other verbs with partially emptied meaning in more or less phrased expressions, but it is also used in stead of lexical verbs (e.g. in raditi čaj/ kavu / kolače...). Such expressions are used not only in journalistic and conversational styles but also in the language of some literary works.

Abstract:
The large number of ups in Shakespeare's plays has not only conventional usage but also metaphorical usage, especially orientation metaphors. From the aspect of syntactic structure, V+up phrasal verbs combined with verbs are usually metaphorical usages. The types of these verbs include noun-transformed verbs, transitive verbs, and special usages. Based on the metaphorical usage of up, this paper explores the underlying cognitive mechanism behind it, and finds that verbs affect the mapping direction of up, which makes it highlight different metaphorical meanings, and energy transfer between verb phrases. Studying the cognitive mechanism of V+up orientation metaphor helps to further understand the emotions and thoughts of the characters in Shakespeare's plays.

Abstract:
The work is devoted to the verbs of falling in Kazym dialect of Khanty language (Ob-Ugric < Finno-Ugric). This dialect is spoken in the district near the Kazym River, Khanty-Mansi district. The work suggests the detailed distribution of the core verbs pertaining to the semantic field of falling. The system of verbs of falling in Kazym Khanty can be characterized as weakly dominant system, when there is one verb that has a wide meaning and can be used nearly in all the contexts. The main verb is pitti. It denotes situations belonging to the tree frames associated with falling. The verb is not used to denote the situation of destruction. The usage of the majority of other verbs described in the work is also limited to three frames. However, pitty have the widest usage. It’s meaning is free of additional connotations. It has a bulk of grammaticalized and idiomatized usages. There are also some other verbs that correspond to the same basic frames. However, the number of particular situations they denote within these frames is narrower as compared to pitti. Separate verbs (a verb and its suffixed correlates) are used in context of the fourth frame, namely destruction. As a result, the table is given where the distribution of the verbs of falling among different diagnostic contexts for falling subframes in Kazym Khanty is summarized.

Abstract:
Abstract Based on datasets of L1 Italian and Spanish learner language culled from the Trinity Lancaster Corpus Sample, this paper investigates how verb-argument constructions (VACs) develop in the spoken English of L2 learners across proficiency levels. In addition to proficiency and L1 effects, we focus on the potential influence of native English usage on learner VAC production. Insights into learners’ productive knowledge of five target VACs and the verbs used in those VACs are gained through (1) comparisons of normalized entropy scores for verbs in VACs; (2) correlation analyses comparing for each VAC the verbs produced by groups of learners and by native English speakers; and (3) regression analyses comparing learner verb-VAC associations against indices of VAC usage, including verb-VAC frequency, VAC-verb association strength and contingency. Results indicate that, across L1 backgrounds, more proficient learners are more productive in their VAC use and closer to patterns in L1 English usage than less proficient learners.

Abstract:
The Ho language, a member of the Austro-Asiatic language family, specifically falls under the Munda group. Traditionally, the verb 'be' has been denoted to as the ‘-tan’ verb. However, our study seeks to argue that both the ‘-tan’ and ‘-min’ verbs should be categorized as 'be' verbs, serving as main verbs with the meaning 'is’, while maintaining distinct usage and functions. Thus, this paper aims to examine the functions and uses of both the ‘-tan’ and ‘-min verbs. In pursuit of this goal, we will explore not only their roles as main verbs but also their applications as tense markers, brand names, and linking verbs.

Abstract:
This study examines a corpus of 300 compositional phrasal verbs in English using the particle up. Whereas frozen phrasal verbs clearly do not have the same meaning without the particle and must be listed in the lexicon grammar of idiomatic expressions (e.g., break up the audience “cause to laugh”), compositional phrasal verbs merely add an aspectual element to the simple verb, and particle usage might be better analyzed as a property of the simple verb. Although this meaning is difficult to characterize precisely, it generally indicates direction (ride up the elevator), completion (open up the store), intensity (hype up the book), or combinations (polish up the silverware, completion and intensity). These properties are added to the table of compositional phrasal verbs. Optional particle usage can also identify the meaning of a potentially ambiguous simple verb. For example, the simple verb call “phone” can take the particle up but not out, while the simple verb call “announce” can take the particle out but not up. The simple verb tables, however, will become enormously complex when all English particles (fifteen different particles according to B. Fraser 1976) are taken into account.

Abstract:
From the corpus data, we observe that in the real language usage, the particular verb does not appear in all theoretically possible finite and infinite verb forms in the morphologically rich Lithuanian but is used in those forms which are relevant for the verb patterning. On the one hand, by teaching vocabulary, is it important to represent lexis in these relevant forms – frequently used forms, and, on the other hand, in grammar teaching, there is a need to provide learners with appropriate vocabulary, e.g., by teaching infinite forms, to use verbs, in the usage of which, these forms are relevant and frequent. In this paper, we provide language teaching practitioners with the data about the frequently used Lithuanian verbs and show which of them and how often appear in infinite forms (participles in passive and active voice, adverbial participles, half participles). As a research data we use 200 verbs from the Lexical Database of Lithuanian Language Usage which was developed on the basis of the written subcorpus of the Pedagogic corpus of Lithuanian. The investigated verbs belong to the frequent vocabulary: in the corpus of approx. 700,000 tokens, these verbs are used 100 times (and above). First, we analysed, which verbs appear in infinite forms, second, we checked whether frequent and typical infinite forms are included into corpus pattern(s) of these particular verbs, and if there is a link between the infinite form and a particular meaning of the verb. All verbs (except of three verbs with no infinite forms) were included into one of three groups: 1) 11 verbs which occur in the infinite forms frequently (more than 50% of all forms – finite and infinite) and, accordingly, typical; 2) 117 verbs with the infinite forms making up from 10 to 50%; 3) 69 verbs, with the infinite forms making up less than 10% of all verb forms. Interestingly, the verbs of the first group, usually have only one infinite form, e.g., participle in passive voice which makes up more than 50% of all forms of verb. These cases are also frequently observed in the second verb group. Thus, if the verb tends to be used in infinite forms, it is important to know which infinite form is relevant to that particular verb.In the Lexical Database of Lithuanian Language Usage, lexical and grammatical patterning of the word is represented in the form of corpus patterns. In this study, we showed the interrelation between the frequently used infinite forms of the verb and its corpus patterns (also, corpus patterns related to particular meaning of the polysemous verb). We can expect various applications of the provided data in the Lithuanian as a foreign language teaching: the provided data about the verbs typical and frequent in infinite forms and the corpus patterns including these infinite forms can be used for building vocabulary training as well as for developing grammar exercises.

Abstract:
The relevance of the English Language learning is substantiated in the article for many reasons. First, because of its international meaning in the whole world. Secondly, due to the huge variety of vocabulary, the presence of emotionally coloured set phrases, turns, idioms, phraseological units, proverbs, sayings and phrasal verbs. Thirdly, due to its emotional coloring, individuality and the presence of words of Greek, Latin and French origin. The article considers the specifics of the use of phrasal verbs in English Lexicology classes. Such teaching methods as descriptive (for a general description of the context of a phrasal verb in English); contextual-interpretive (to identify the functional and semantic meaning of a phrasal verb), as well as a method of creating a problem situation with the help of a phrasal verb. The essence of the term «phrasal verbs» is defined; the place of phrasal verbs in the English Lexicology is considered and the features of phrasal verbs usage in this discipline are determined. The features of perception and memorization of phrasal verbs are considered. Attention is paid to the classification of phrasal verbs. It has been proven that phrasal verbs are one of the most difficult moments regarding mastering the English language, but despite this, it is thanks to their use in the context that the English language becomes more «alive», extraordinary and emotionally colored, and in turn, the constant study of phrasal verbs and the use of their meanings in the context contributes to the memorization of new lexical units through associations, images and situations.

Perek, Florent. "Verbs, Constructions, Alternations : Usage-based perspectives on argument realization." Thesis, Lille 3, 2012. http://www.theses.fr/2012LIL30036.

Full text
Abstract:
The general goal of this thesis is to investigate to what extent the grammar of verbs, also called argument realization, can be based on linguistic usage. The usage-based approach is a recent paradigm shift in linguistics which takes the view that grammar is a dynamic inventory of symbolic conventions that emerges through, and is likewise shaped by, actual language use. Adopting a constructional approach to argument structure and on the basis of English data, we address the question of the usage basis of argument realization at three levels of organization. At the level of verbs, we compare experimental results to usage data, and find that more frequent valency patterns of a verb are processed more easily. These findings provide evidence for the usage basis of valency. At the level of constructions, we show that, in the case of the conative construction, it is possible to formulate constructional generalizations on the basis of verbal meaning at the level of semantically defined verb classes, but not so easily at the most abstract level. We take this as further evidence of the importance of lower-level schemas over broad generalizations. At the level of alternations, we present usage-based evidence that productivity can be based on alternation relations. We report that the dative alternation displays a productivity asymmetry, and we show that these differences can be explained by corresponding asymmetries in type frequencies

Fronk, Amanda Kae. "Determining Dictionary and Usage Guide Agreement with Real-World Usage: A Diachronic Corpus Study of American English." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2014. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/4093.

Full text
Abstract:
Dictionaries and, to a lesser extent, usage guides provide writers, editors, and users of American English information on how to use the language appropriately. Dictionaries, in particular, hold authority over correct usage of words. However, historically, usage guides and dictionaries were created using the knowledge of a small group of people. Lexicographers like Noah Webster set out to prescribe a proper way of using American English. To make these judgments, they often relied on a combination of study and idiosyncratic intuitions. A similar process took place in creating usage guides. Though these manuals profess to explain how the language is used by American English speakers-or rather by the selected group of speakers deemed "standard" by usage guide editors and lexicographers-ultimately the manuals can only express the perspectives of the editors and lexicographers on this language. Historically, the views of these editors and lexicographers were the best tools available to assess language, but now computer-based corpora allow for studying larger swaths of language usage. This study examines how much dictionaries and usage guides agree with real-world usage found in corpus data. Using the Corpus of Historical American English, a set of dictionaries and usage guides published throughout the last two hundred years were analyzed to see how much agreement they had with corpus data in noting the addition of denominal verbs (i.e., verbs formed by the conversion of nouns as in 'They taped together the box.') in American English usage. It was found that the majority of the time dictionaries noted new denominal verbs before corpus data reflected accepted usage of these verbs. However, about a quarter of the time dictionaries noted new denominal verbs concurrently with the corpus data. These results suggest that dictionaries-and the subjective opinions of the lexicographers that created them-are more aligned with real-world usage than would be expected. Because of sparse listings, results for usage guide agreement was inconclusive.

White, Michael G. "Verb Usage in Egyptian Movies, Serials, and Blogs: A Case for Register Variation." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2019. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/7745.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis contributes to the discussion of register variation within Egyptian Arabic by focusing on the usage of verbs in blogs and transcripts of movies and television. Register variation has been extensively researched for English as well as several other languages; yet, the lexical and grammatical features that distinguish registers of Egyptian Arabic have not been analyzed. Several challenges have prevented such an analysis, among them the perceived lack of an automatic annotator and the uncertainty of results. In order to overcome these challenges, two corpora were compiled: one containing texts from blogs and the other transcripts of movies and television shows. With each corpus representing a potential register of the dialect, the verbs in each corpus were lemmatized and semi-automatically annotated for either aspect or mood. The verbs were then counted according to lemma, aspect, and mood in order to determine the extent of variance between the two corpora. The effectiveness of the state-of-the-art automatic annotator was also evaluated by comparing the counts it provided to those produced from corrections of its output. This thesis found that verbs are in fact used differently in the two corpora suggesting register variation and identified potential verbal features characteristic of each register. It also found that the automatic tagger produced counts that lead to the same conclusions as the corrected annotation.

Fehrmann, Ingo. "Kausative Konstruktionen mit dem Verb "machen" im Deutschen." Doctoral thesis, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.18452/19403.

Full text
Abstract:
Gerade die in der Kombination mit „machen“ hochfrequenten Adjektive korrelieren signifikant mit abweichenden, nicht im engeren Sinne kausativen, Interpretationen im Sinne der jeweils evozierten semantischen Frames.<br>This dissertation focuses on combinations of a form of the German verb “machen” with an adjective phrase which, according to a working hypothesis, is said to have a resultative reading. The work is grounded in a Construction Grammar approach, viewing language as a structured inventory of Constructions, i.e. form-function mappings. The aims are a) establishing lexical collocations and usage tendencies within these structures involving “machen” and a resultative adjective phrase, based on corpus studies, and b) describing systematically the relevant form-function mappings. As Construction Grammar approaches predict changes in function corresponding to changes in form, the formal collocations established according to aim a) are systematically analyzed with respect to their respective functional interpretations. The methods used involve a series of „Covarying Collexeme Analyses“ (cf. Gries/Stefanowitsch, 2004) to study lexical collocations within the given formal structure, and the application of frame semantic descriptions of English verbs, as found in FrameNet (cf. Fillmore/Baker, 2010), to the German structures found in the corpora. The results indicate that, contrary to the working hypothesis, a great number of “machen” plus adjective tokens does not lead to a causative or resultative interpretation. Especially the most frequent adjectives combined with “machen” exhibit a significant correlation with structures evoking different, not strictly causative, semantic frames.

Abstract:
This essay deals with lexical competence in written language production among advanced learners of Swedish as a second language. The study focuses on the use of verbs with regard to both quantitative and qualitative aspects. The aim of this essay is to examine the L2-learners verb vocabulary, paying attention to frequency, variation, distribution in semantic fields as well as semantic and constructional correctness. The results of the investigations are compared to the results of a control group consisting of L1-speakers.         The material in the present investigation consists of 40 argumentative essays written by 20 adult students with Swedish as their second language and 20 adult students with Swedish as their first language. All students were enrolled in an adult education program, attending the courses Swedish as a second language B and Swedish B at senior high school level.         All verbs have been extracted, counted and, where applicable, inserted into the 13 semantic fields which are examined in this study. Errors in connection with the use of verb have been categorized according to two major error types, i.e. constructional errors (errors connected to prefixed verbs, reflexive verbs, particle verbs, and errors in verb + noun combinations) and primarily semantic errors.         The investigation demonstrates that the verb frequency is lower in the L2-group compared to the L1-group. The higher verb frequency in the L1-group is probably due to the, on average, longer essays in that particular group.            The verb frequency tables show that use of particle verbs is twice as high in the L1-essays compared to the L2-essays. The tables of the 20 most common verbs demonstrate that L2-students, compared to the L1-students, tend to underuse certain verbs and overuse others. Three verbs that are particularly overused by the L2-students, are säga, vilja and finnas, while the verbs få and ska underused to a great extent by the same group. The tree overused verbs are nuclear verbs in their specific semantic fields (VERBAL COMMUNICATION, WISH and EXISTENCE). Apart from the overuse of these nuclear verbs the investigation material does not give further indications of overuse of nuclear verbs. This shows that overuse of nuclear verbs as an interlanguage feature is not particularly prominent in the advanced L2-learners.              There does not seem to be any notable difference in verb variation when looking at the verbs in their entirety. However, certain semantic fields are more extended and more varied in the L1-group.         In the essays written by the L1-students there are very few occurrences of constructional errors. The most frequent error type, in both student groups, is of a semantic nature. The L2-material shows that the most common semantic error is related to the horizontal structure (and not the vertical structure) of the semantic fields. This means that L2-students find it hard to differ between synonyms in the same semantic field at the same hierarchical level. The current study thus indicates that, as far as the verb vocabulary goes, the L2-students main difficulty is semantic specification, i.e. choosing the right synonym. Among the combinatory errors, the errors connected to verb + noun combinations have the highest frequency.

Abstract:
In a constructionist approach to grammar, morphological constructions and clausal constructions may have the same theoretical status as argument structure constructions (e.g., Goldberg, 1995, pp. 22–23; Croft, 2001; Booij, 2010). In this chapter, the author argues that the Danish verb prefixes be- and for-, in addition to verbal derivation, impose a lexeme-independent transitive argument structure construction with three meaning variants. In a large-scale corpus study, a distributional analysis of the prefix construction and its association with verbal base lexemes shows that the two constructional variants have a different semantic profile. While the potential productivity of be- and for- constructions is restricted, authentic examples of creative usage show that all constructional variants are partially productive in present-day Danish.

Abstract:
Esse-perfect in Macedonian: lexical distribution and contextual restrictions - The present article deals with the esse-perfect in Macedonian, also found in Aromanian and some Albanian dialects, which is formed with verbs of both aspects by means of the auxiliary sum ‘to be’ plus the (formally) passive participle. In contrast to previous work on this topic, our research sets out to determine the domains of usage for this construction in Macedonian, both in the standard language and its dialects, especially those on the western periphery and in linguistic enclaves surrounded by Albanian-speaking communities. In addition to personal fieldwork, three main corpora serve as a material basis for this task; see the list of sources at the end of the article. The formation of the esse-perfect is rather limited when compared with the other two perfects of Macedonian. In particular, its distribution clearly depends on lexical verb classes, with language contact accounting for less rigid restrictions and a wider usage of this construction.

Abstract:
Rotorcraft structural methodology has traditionally relied upon the use of three sources of conservatism for design and fatigue substantiation of rotorcraft dynamic components: fatigue strength, flight loads, and the aircraft usage spectrum. In contrast to the thousands of engineering hours typically spent quantifying component strength and loads through full scale laboratory and flight testing, definition of the usage spectrum has traditionally relied on legacy specifications, pilot surveys, and rotorcraft original equipment manufacturer (OEM) historical knowledge of rotorcraft usage. Significant and largely untapped value lies in the application of HUMS recorded flight parameter data and regime recognition (RR) algorithms to monitor fleet wide usage metrics and to support development of a data driven usage spectrum that maintains the intended conservatism of the original usage spectrum. This paper presents the methods and tools that were used to determine actual fleet usage rates for one very significant and easy to detect damaging regime for the S-92® main rotor blade using 700,000 flight hours of S-92® rotorcraft fleet HUMS data. The calculated retirement time (CRT) based on this updated usage demonstrated that the main rotor blade can be safely extended from a retirement time of 22,000 to &gt;30,000 hours.

Abstract:
Abstract Originally developed back in the late 1970's, the current generation of super-ferritic stainless steels have become a cost-effective choice for heat exchanger tubing. When they were first developed, the goal was to have an alternative to titanium grade 2 in applications such as seawater and other high chloride applications. At that time, titanium was in was high priced and had a long lead time, not unlike today. over the last 10 years, the majority of the seawater capable high-performance stainless steel literature and usage has been focused on super-austenitic (6% and 7% Mo alloys) and super-duplex alloys. While the performance of these alloys is very good, today’s nickel and molybdenum material prices have driven the price of these alloys skyward. The power industry has recognized the effectiveness super-ferritics and over 78,000,000 feet are in usage since beginning in early 1980. The low nickel and moderate molybdenum content for excellent chloride resistance, has driven a substantially increased use of the super-ferritic alloys. This paper traces usage in power plant heat exchanger applications and compares properties such as corrosion resistance, mechanical and physical properties and compares them to the other seawater and MIC resistant grades.

Abstract:
A Health and Usage Monitoring System (HUMS) records a large number of flight parameters that can be utilized for regime recognition and tracking of individual rotorcraft usage. The availability of this information from a fleet offers the additional opportunity to work with these large datasets within an Advanced Structural Integrity Framework (ASIF) developed to perform reliability-based design and maintenance, considering durability and damage tolerance. Probabilistic analytical techniques were explored using a sample of UH-60 Integrated Vehicle Health Monitoring System (IVHMS) fleet data that was analyzed for the horizontal stabilator in a case study to estimate the reliability associated with a specified component replacement time and inspection interval. Probabilistic sensitivity studies showed that the deterministic design and substantiation practices used for the horizontal stabilator very closely approximated the industry accepted reliability levels for fatigue and crack growth. The probabilistic methodology also effectively utilized the available IVHMS regime recognition output, but the reliability results depended greatly on assumptions used to describe statistical distributions of key random input parameters, especially loads, which were not available from the fleet data for this component. The ASIF was shown to be a powerful tool for reliability-based management of rotorcraft structural integrity. Further work is needed to confidently configure and fully exploit such methods.

Full text
Abstract:
Purpose: There can be some ambiguity when describing requirements using natural language. One of the critical parts of the requirement syntax is using verbs to express the action of the requirement. Therefore, it is essential to explore how verbs can be used in requirements to convey their intended meaning accurately. Problem: This study aims to investigate the action entity of ISO/IEC/IEEE-29148:2018 requirement syntax and establish a connection between the verbs used to express requirements. Methods: Using Spacy, a natural language processing library, to analyze 955 aerospace requirements from 2017-2022. Verbs are extracted and compared to the ISO/IEC/IEEE-29148:2018 action part of the requirement syntax. Results: The verbs used in a requirement express the desired action. In the requirements studied, it was observed that a particular verb was used more frequently than others. However, it is essential not to overuse a single verb to avoid confusion and ensure a better understanding of the requirement. Choosing the correct verb to describe the requirement can avoid misunderstandings in interpretation. Conclusion: This research aims to provide insight into the usage of verbs in requirements. However, additional research is necessary to determine how the verb functions with other grammatical elements within the requirements.

Abstract:
The article a study of the standard aspect of vocabulary usage in modern Ukrainian newspaper publications. Based on the analysis of the reference literature, the article examines the cases of conjugation of the noun quantity with the verbs to increase and to grow, as well as to decrease, to lower, to shrink, to fall in the publications of the newspaper «Den’». This newspaper is one of the most popular publications in the rating of national media. There are a lot of doubts about the proper usage of these linguistic expressions in the editorial work. The research is predetermined by the need to establish word meanings (based on the editorial practice), which is not specifically delineated in the reference literature, and to give variants of their proper usage. It is accented that the noun quantity should be used with the verbs to increase/decrease. It is noted that to indicate the amount of someone or something, the word quantity should be written, not a number. The selected examples (about 40 sentence constructions) are given the correct answers. Linguistic literacy of an individual as well as of a society in general and opinion expression depends on the selection of linguistic expressions by journalists, since linguistic mistakes in periodical newspapers, radio or TV tend to spread through the language and are required subconsciously. It is emphasized that the accuracy of word usage depends on the availability, aesthetic impact and effectiveness of newspaper publications. Keywords: incorrect/correct usage, conjugation, dictionaries, editorial practice, newspaper publications.

Abstract:
Ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) is a relatively modern class of concrete with properties that include very high compressive strengths, increased tensile strengths, very low permeability, and superior durability compared to conventional, normal-strength concrete. As research of this material continues to progress, its applications under both military and civil works categories expand. However, mixture and structural design guidance using UHPC is limited, particularly in the United States. This special report provides an overview of UHPC as initial guidance for the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) so that the material may be more easily utilized in civil works infrastructure. The information contained in this report is based on years of experience researching and developing UHPC at the US Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) and is intended to be a basis for the incorporation of this material class into USACE Engineer Manual (EM) 1110-2-2000, Standard Practice for Concrete for Civil Works Structures, when it is next updated.

Full text
Abstract:
The US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) maintains and operates 419 reservoirs nationwide for diverse purposes. This infrastructure is essential to the nation’s continued economic progress and provides numerous benefits. Sedimentation in reservoirs causes the loss of storage capacity, leading to interference with operations, reduction of project benefits, and eventual rendering of project operation technically infeasible or uneconomical. All reservoirs trap sediment, and sustainable long-term operation can be achieved only if sedimentation is managed. With many of the USACE reservoirs now reaching 50 years of age, sedimentation is starting to encroach on the beneficial pools. Under the paradigm of sustainable use, it is important to identify and implement strategies to sustain reservoir operation in the long term, beyond the period contemplated in the original project design life. This report outlines the major types of sediment management strategies available for reservoirs. Because the rate of new reservoir construction by USACE is very low, this report focuses on remedial strategies at existing reservoirs and presents a general methodology for the preliminary analysis of such sites. This report examines four example USACE reservoirs with known sedimentation issues to highlight the types of problems encountered and the development of strategies that can lead to sustainable use.

Abstract:
The augmented reality applications are effectively applied in education and therapy for people with special needs. We propose to apply the augmented reality portal as a special tool for the teachers to interact with people at the moment when a panic attack or anxiety happens in education process. It is expected that applying the augmented reality portal in education will help students with ASD, ADHD and anxiety disorder to feel safe at discomfort moment and teachers can interact with them. Our application with the augmented reality portal has three modes: for teachers, parents, and users. It gives the ability to organize personalized content for students with special needs. We developed the augmented reality application aimed at people with cognitive disorders to enrich them with communication skills through associations understanding. Applying the augmented reality application and the portal discovers new perspectives for learning children with special needs. The AR portal creates illusion of transition to another environment. It is very important property for children with ADHD because they need in breaks at the learning process to change activity (for example, such children can interact with different 3D models in the augmented reality modes) or environment. The developed AR portal has been tested by a volunteer with ASD (male, 21 years old), who confirmed that the AR portal helps him to reduce anxiety, to feel calm down and relaxed, to switch attention from a problem situation.

Abstract:
Recently, there has been an expansion in the deployment of digital systems and digital IDs among taxing authorities. However, little is known about the extent to which such technologies are being adopted, or about whether the data from them is being used strategically to improve tax administration. Even less is known about this in the context of subnational tax administration, although this could be very relevant in some contexts, such as Nigeria. This study investigates the extent of the adoption and strategic usage of data from e-tax systems and digital IDs among state internal revenue services (SIRSs) in Nigeria. Data was collected through qualitative interviews conducted within the SIRSs – one from each of the country’s six geopolitical zones, and within the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS). The qualitative data from the interviews was evaluated using thematic analysis. The findings revealed that there is scope for improvement in the adoption and usage of data from e-tax systems and digital IDs among the SIRSs. It was also found that the extent of adoption and strategic data usage from e-tax systems by SIRSs likely improves states’ per capita internally generated revenue (IGR), but similar insights on the impact of digital IDs have not been obtained. Lastly, it was found that there are some lessons SIRSs could learn from FIRS in terms of strategic use of data from e-tax systems and digital IDs. Specifically, SIRSs need to integrate an audit risk engine and machine learning for performing analytics into their e-tax systems, and also automate the estimation of annual credits for withholding tax suffered, tax refunds and penalties, as well as tax audit management including case selection, allocation of auditors and generating audit reports. Some policy recommendations are offered that are consistent with these findings.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Currently, museum pedagogy is a very promising area, covering all types of interactions between the museum and its audience. Museum pedagogy is an interdisciplinary field of scientific knowledge, “formed at the intersection of pedagogy, psychology, museology and the relevant discipline of the museum and built on its basis specific practical activities focused on the transfer of cultural (artistic) experience in a museum environment”. The rapid development of technology has led to the so-called modification of this scientific field, we mean a new branch of pedagogical knowledge is emerging - virtual museum pedagogy. VR technologies are beginning to occupy leading positions, but it is important to note that today in art pedagogy there is no idea how to build the educational process in such a context. Thus, this area of pedagogy today requires a deep and comprehensive study. This has determined the purpose of this study. The objectives of the study follow from the goal: 1) To reveal the specifics of virtual museum pedagogy 2) To develop basic pedagogical recommendations for conducting virtual excursions using VR technologies Materials and methods. The methods of this study were analysis and synthesis. Results and discussion. The results of the study consist in the VR technologies usage in art pedagogy features identification.

Galani Yamdeu, Joseph Hubert. Nutritional Analysis of the Canterbury Food Bank Emergency Parcel. Canterbury Christ Church University, 2024. https://doi.org/10.63342/cccujhgy.2025.123.

Abstract:
The nutritional adequacy of Canterbury Food Bank (CFB)’s emergency food parcels for children and adults was evaluated to assess their alignment with UK Government dietary recommendations and ensure their ability to support recipients’ long-term health. The protein, fibre, calories, minerals and vitamins in the parcels often exceeded the UK Government nutrient recommendation for children (2-3 years) and adults (19-64 years), making it sufficient to last beyond the intended three-day period. Mono- and poly-unsaturated fats and mostly Vitamin D were found to be very low in the parcel foods. Possibilities for improvement of the nutritional quality of the parcels, as well as better usage of the child parcel, should follow these recommendations: (i) reduce the sugar and salt content of the parcels; (ii) increase the Vitamin D content of the parcels; (iii) consider extending the child's parcel to 5-6 days; (iv) it is not essential to substitute fruit juice with fruit squash, as this does not significantly affect the sugar content of the parcels; (v) replace mashed potatoes with vegetables savoury rice rather than tined potatoes; (vi) perform further nutritional analyses considering the scenarios recommended in this report, together with data on available and projected foods at CFB, in order to provide a clearer picture and more precise advice.
