Zhong, Qiuyue. "Verb Doubling in Chinese." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/402254.
Full textThe present thesis aims to discuss verb doubling phenomenon in Chinese. First, I offer doubling phenomenon in languages, which shows that doubling phenomenon is observed in different languages and in different domains. Then, I review the definition of syntactic doubling in Barbiers (2008). I define verb doubling by adjusting this definition: a lexical verb is expressed phonologically twice. I focus on Chinese data in this dissertation. The verb doubling patterns in this language is grouped into non-cleft ones and verb doubling cleft. Second, I present general descriptions of different non-cleft verb doubling patterns in Chinese. These observations demonstrate that verb doubling phenomenon may be relevant to many aspects like topic/focus, delimitative aspect, polarity, presupposition and maximality. The discussions on these expressions concentrate on questions like what kinds of elements may undergo doubling in these patterns, in which situations these expressions appear, what are the similarities among different doubling patterns, etc. Third, I offer an analysis on verb doubling cleft (VDC) in Chinese. Following Cheng and Vicente (2013), I claim that in VDC expressions the doubled verb undergoes A’ movement to [Spec, TopP] through intermediate projections. Besides, the doubling effect is caused by the failure of chain reduction. I assume that the double element fuses with an aspect head based on Cinque’s (1999) hierarchy of functional projections.

Full textIn the present work, I analyze the functional behavior of the verbs to come (VIR) and to turn (VIRAR), in the contemporary Brazilian Portuguese, from their performance in simple structures to the formation of complex structures. This dissertation is developed under the paradigm of the linguistic functionalism and it is based on data from spoken language, these were collected from the data base of PEUL and NURC projects. In order to support the hypothesis that permeates the aim of this work, there had been also collected from the written and spoken language through the mechanism of Google search and, also, corpusdoportugues.org. I verify the possibility of derivation between one use or another when facing the collected samples, which are organized in functional standards. In such a way, cases are demonstrated where to the measure that new structures are placed in use, the analyzed verbs present semantic erosion in a gradual way, thus following a unidirectional line of development. In opposition to the grammaticalization studies that, according to authors, they aim a unidirectional route about the development of a lexicon, that is a representation through a line, in which we can recognize points and establish derivations among these points, I test the validity of the multissistemic theory when denying the derivation process. The studies point to an unknown/incognito formation presents among the investigated theories in this work: would to come (VIR) and to turn (VIRAR) go through a unidirectional or multidirectional way of development? In accordance with the achieved occurrences/tokens, I notice that at the same time where it has the hypothesis of that a use has derived from another one, presenting, then, a development gradual erosion, there also. Still, based on the displayed data, I observe the use of a structure that remains outside of the scope of linguistic literature. These structures are formed from a minimum sequence of V1 and V2, in which V1 corresponds to one of the verbs to come (VIR) and to turn (VIRAR) and V2 is relatively free. In this work, these types of constructions are dealt with as a verbal case of 6 serialization, and V1 is presented almost or total dessemanticized, which assumes a syntactic categorization of ALMOSTSERIAIS VERBS or SERIAL VERBS.

Full textThis study explores the lexical semantic representation of break verbs in Xitsonga. Chapter One is the introduction of this study. It describes the statement of the problem. The main aim of this study is described which m bnef is to investigate the form, struc e and interpretation of break verbs in Xitsonga. The significance of this study, which is to highlight the semantic value of break verbs in Xitsonga is discussed. The methodology, lite rature review as well as the theta - theory and its properties have been examined. Chapter Two explores the predicate argument structure. The difference between two lexical representations, which are lexical-syntactic and lexical semantic representations was investigated. A brief definition of break verbs as well as the six categories of the verbs of change of state have also been discussed. This chapter also analyses the lexical features of break verbs. Various sub - classes of external arguments and of internal argument are observed. Chapter Three presents the lexical - semantic representation of break verbs where focus is on argument structure, event structure, qualia structure and lexical inheritance structure. Chapter Four deals with the syntactic alternation and selection restriction of break verbs. The difference between transitive and intransitive alterna tions was also highlighted. This chapter also explores some of the different types of verbal alternations, such as ' instrument subject alternation', ' locative alternation' and the ' with/ against alternation' . Chapter Five gives the main conclusion of this study.

Full textThe present work discusses agreement in passive constructions in BP and its relation to the ordering of constituents. In chapter 1, we show that there are three possible patterns of agreement in these constructions: full agreement, in which both participle and auxiliary fully agree with the DP; partial agreement, in which gender agreement between participle and DP is mandatory, but number agreement with the auxiliary is optional; and default agreement, in which both participle and auxiliary surface with default values for number and gender. We also show that except for the default pattern, the other ones are possible both with pre- and postverbal DPs. Our proposal is that participle heads have been reanalized due to the loss of number agreement in BP and now host only a gender feature. Chapter 2 is devoted to a detailed discussion of Agree-based and Move-based approaches to agreement. We discuss whether each agreement system can account for the data presented in chapter 1 in light of the proposal made. We conclude that both Nunes (2007) and Bokovi (2007) approaches to Agree can deal satisfactory with the data at hand. We also raise the hypothesis that the constituent order in passive constructions is derived postsyntactically, through copy deletion at PF. In chapter 3, we show that V DP order in BP, though very restricted, is possible with passive and unaccusative predicates. In these cases, we show that such order corresponds to a difference in information structure, hence motivating copy deletion at PF. Chapter 4 is devoted to a discussion of definiteness effects in BP and the different interpretations for nominals, as well as the positions that can be occupied by weak and strong nominals in BP, and relating such matters to the expression of thetic and categoric judgements (BRITTO, 1998). We also support the conclusion that default agreement is generated by a weak Case (DE HOOP, 1996), and show that bare singulars systematically fail to trigger gender agreement on participles. Finally, chapter 5 bears on the issue of bare nominals, their use and intepretation. We claim that bare singulars are not DPs in BP and cannot freely occupy argument positions. We claim instead that bare singulars in object position are incorporated, and that bare singular generic subjects are topics (MÜLLER, 2004).

Considering that the idea of knowledge provides an accessibility between linguistic and cognitive objects that is only meaningful through the notion of use, since the knowledge does not occur outside the significant experiences of the subject with the references from the world or from the human symbolic actions, the aim of this study is to describe the verb saber as a multiple functional verb in Brazilian Portuguese, seeking to confirm the hypothesis that it can be considered a form of expression of lexical evidentiality. Basically classified as a cognition verb, the verb saber presents other functionalities, such as the epistemic modality, in which the subject's commitment to the proposition he or she presents is evaluated; and the facultative modality, in which the ability of a participant to engage in the state-of-affairs is evaluated. There is also a reportative evidential use of the common knowledge of this predicate, in which the information is presented as shared knowledge between the speaker and the listener. Besides these uses, our hypothesis is that the verb saber can be also used to convey inferential and deductive evidentiality, observing the evidentials hierarchy proposed by Hengeveld and Hattnher (2015). Thus, based on the Functional Discourse Grammar theoretical-methodological approach we investigate the pragmatic-semantic and morphosyntactic domains involving the multifunctionality of this verb. The acceptance of this theoretical approach leads to the choice of a corpus which considers real uses of the language, represented here by Iboruna Database, Corpus do Português and by occurrences taken from the internet. In order to analyze the different uses of this verb, it is used the layered organization, and its different hierarchical levels of analysis, proposed by the Functional Discourse Grammar (HENGEVELD; MACKENZIE, 2008, p.13). In this hierarchical context, the different semantic expressions of the verb saber are classified. The analysis confirmed the existence of two other evidential uses of the verb saber not yet described in the literature: inferential and deductive. In addition, this research also contributes to the distinction between knowledge and information regarding occurrences with this verb. We demonstrate, therefore, throughout the investigation, that the verb saber expresses lexical evidentiality in Brazilian Portuguese, and, hence, we identify seven contexts of use: cognitive, informative, epistemic modality, facultative modality, reportative evidentiality, inferencial evidentiality and deductive evidentiality.
Pagatto, Louise. "Verb subcategorization and verb derivation in Marshallese| A lexicase analysis." Thesis, University of Hawai'i at Manoa, 2015. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3731421.
Full textThe research presented in this dissertation is an application of lexicase, an empirical lexicalist theory of syntax, to the facts of Marshallese, one of the languages of the Micronesian language family. In particular, the dissertation focusses on two aspects of the syntax of Marshallese verbs: (1) the classification of verbs on the basis of their morphosyntactic properties, and (2) the formalization of certain derivational relationships between verbs and lexical items in other syntactic categories as well as between the various subcategories of verbs. However, the scope of the investigation has not been limited exclusively to verbs. An overview of the basic syntactic properties of Marshallese sentence types, the internal structure of noun phrases and the general properties of verbs and the constituents in their domains is provided in Chapter 2.
Marshallese verbs are subcategorized primarily on the basis of the syntactic features which encode their argument structure, i.e. the case relations which they imply and/or the verbal complements with which they must cooccur. The semantic and syntactic properties of case relations and the characteristics of the case marking system of Marshallese are presented in Chapter 3.
Given these subcategorization criteria, Marshallese is said to include nine major verb classes, subdivided on the basis of whether the verbs are transitive or intransitive, personal or˙ impersonal, extension or non-extension, and adjectival or non-adjectival. The syntactic properties of each of these categories are discussed in detail in Chapter 4.
The derivational relationships that hold between verbs and words of other grammatical categories, and between various subtypes of verbs are formalized in Chapter 5, capturing the morphological, semantic and syntactic relationships between sets of source and derived words.
Cunha, Mila Gonzalez da. "Colocações formadas pelos verbos de cambio hacerse, ponerse e volverse." Universidade de São Paulo, 2013. http://www.teses.usp.br/teses/disponiveis/8/8145/tde-08112013-112021/.
Full textThis work aims to study the so-called change of state Spanish verbs from the theoretical perspective of collocations. Initially a quantitative analysis was done based on Corpus Linguistics, which allowed us to identify recurring constructions with the verbs hacerse, ponerse and volverse in the production of native Spanish speakers. Next, we sought to identify collocations integrated by these verbs, i.e., forms of co-occurrence of words that are not guided by the possibilities offered by the language grammar, but by combinatorial restrictions. Based on the Meaning-Text Theory, we also applied lexical functions to the collocations found. The results indicate that the notion of change exceeds the predicative constructions with hacerse, ponerse and volverse, which were found in construcctions that, strictly speaking, cannot be classified as change of state verb constructions. The results also indicate that some of the production with verbs of change is formed by combinations whose meaning is not in the semantic content of each word, but is in the expression as a whole.
Maseko, Julia Refilwe. "Copulative verbs in Northern Sotho :a morphosemantic study." Thesis, University of Limpopo, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10386/2050.
Full textThe study aimsat finding out thecategorical status of copulatives in Northern Sotho. This will be achieved by examining the morphosemantic features of various copulatives. From a morphological perspective, thestudy focuses on the following types ofcopulative verbs: ke, se, ba, le, na, and COP. The study argues that the foresaid copulatives are not particles but are fully-fledged verbs. As far as the semantic nature of the copulatives is concerned, the study discovered a variety of meanings associated with copulatives, such as the following: the identifying, descriptive, locational and associative. Lastly, the study contends that any research on the copulative in Northern Sotho should be a morphosemantic one, as previous studies focused on one and neglected the other.
Guglielmo, Daniela. "A particle-centred approach on italian verb-particle constructions." Doctoral thesis, Universita degli studi di Salerno, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10556/980.
Full textThe following doctoral thesis, titled “A particle-centred approach on Italian Verb Particle Constructions” (hereinafter VPCs) aims at showing that the particle characterizing Italian Phrasal verbs such as su (up), giù (down), fuori (out), dentro (in/inside) and so on plays a key role in the constructions both syntactically and semantically. The framework adopted is based on the main syntactic theories developed by Z.Harris (1976) as well as on the Lexicon Grammar Method as pointed out by M. Gross (1981). I will suggest, gradually during the dissertation, that the spatial, aspectual and metaphorical meaning of a large portion of Italian VPCs such as scappare fuori di casa (to escape out of the house), tirare via un chiodo (to pull out the nail from the wall), mettere dentro il ladro (to put the thief inside), portare avanti un progetto (to carry out a project), tagliare fuori qualcuno da un discorso (to cut sb.out from a discussion) - are embedded only into the particle slot as the head verb can vary into a finite range of possibilities or it not occur at all. The head verb is in other words ‘week’ while the particle represents the powerful element (or ‘operator’ in lexicon-grammar terms) so that it cannot be considered a small added element (lat. ‘particula’): the particle affects the argument structure of the verb and carries the aspectual or spatial or idiomatic meaning. Moreover its syntactic autonomy is demonstrated by the fact that it can also occur without the head verb, in sentences such as su le mani (hand up), via di qui (away from here), fuori i soldi (money out), giù il governo (down with the government), Lazio avanti (Lazio ahead) that are defined “verbless particle constructions”. The thesis provides an in depth syntactic and semantic analysis of Italian VPCs, with interesting evidence from dictionaries and corpora, stressing the need to substitute the traditional “Verbocentrism” with an original Particle-Centred Approach. Finally the theoretical and applicative implications of such a change of perspective are pointed out. [edited by author]
Full textThis thesis explores the construction of sense in English particle and prepositional verbs. It departs from the premise that meaning is something constructed during the process of situated usage. A corpus of 286 combinations formed through the association of a verbal element with over are analysed in context in order to identify the various factors which influence final semantic interpretation. A particular focus of the study is the relationship between form and meaning. The relationship between syntactic configuration and semantic interpretation is investigated and the various ways in which the number and nature of the verbal and/or prepositional arguments can impact semantic interpretation is explored. The role of the extralinguistic in the construction of sense is examined. The major theoretical questions dealt with concern the categorisation of particles and prepositions, the interaction between particle/prepositional semantics and verbal semantics, the internal structure of particle verbs, and the reasons why the particle in a particle verb can either precede or follow the verbal object. The study also explores several more general areas of linguistic investigation including the conceptualisation of movement, resultativity, transitivity and polysemy. During the course of the study a wide range of factors which influence the final semantic interpretation of particle and prepositional verbs in English are identified

Full textThis thesis investigates Tense and Aspect expression in Arabic and Portuguese language, in order to establish a discussion of how both forms that composes its verbal system - /almāḍī/ and almuḍāriᶜ/, here named as perfective and imperfective, respectively -, can be represented in Brazilian Portuguese. The analysis method started from the reading and translation of the text took as corpus \"The Persian Carpet\", a Hanan Aššayḫ\'s short story following the verbal forms identification to be analyzed in order to propose a translation according to the temporal division of the Portuguese verbal system structure. That was a discussion of the decision for each tense (or mood) that translated the Arabic forms, taking into account the context, it\'s temporal/apectual interpretation and also the Aktionsart of each verb. This research finding coincided with conclusions pointed out by studies about Arabic language, such Cuvalay-Haak (1997), Holes (2004) and Bahloul (2008), that the perfective is generally used in the past tense indication, in neutral situations, where others interpretations are not possible or, at the same time, the perfective aspect. The imperfective (tense and aspect) behaves like the portuguese\'s present tense and also expresses the simultaneous time at the moment of speech, the future, the past or have no temporal link; it can even be translated by the three nominal forms, when in periphrasis. In the aspectual area, it expresses the imperfective with durative verbs, or with pontual verbs, the perfective or the iterative; preceded by the verb ﮐﺍن /kāna/ it indicates the event continuity in the past, with an habitual or iterative situation reading; it occurs also with the verb ﻤﺎ ﺯﺍﻝ /mā zāla/ to indicate the continuity in the present.

Full textOur thesis aims to investigate the relationship between grammar and French general lexicography between 1789 and 1914. The choice of this period is related to some innovative lexicographical aspects, such as the "democratization" of the dictionary’s role, the approval of the Guizot Law in 1833 (focusing on free primary school) and the publication of major works such as the Littré and the Grand Larousse. Without claiming to find a full grammar in a dictionary, we wanted to see if we could elaborate a "grammar of the verb" (starting hypothesis). Therefore, we conducted a comprehensive and systematic research for all words which, directly or indirectly, could relate to the subject matter; we analyzed the dictionaries, with a main focus on microstructure, but without forgetting to study the grammatical attachments (with or without verbal tables), which are included only in the first dictionaries of our corpus. By comparative tables, we took into account all aspects that affect the verb (types, modifications, tense formations, etc.), focusing on similarities and differences between the dictionaries themselves and the reference grammars (Port-Royal, Beauzée and Lhomond). The innovation of this work lies in a research on the verb starting from lexicographical works, not grammars. All the corpus’ dictionaries allowed us to verify the starting hypothesis; in particular, the most complete were the Bescherelle, the La Châtre and the Grand Larousse. We have mentioned these three works several times by grouping them as a "trio" with a very rich microstructure. In fact, by examining the articles dedicated to "verbe", "conjugaison" or "mode", we will find, in a more or less hidden way, true grammar extracts: articles contain many examples, but also educational recommendations

Research in communication disorders suggests that training linguistically complex forms will generalize to untrained, simpler forms with similar structural properties (see Thompson, 2007 for review). The present study investigated generalization patterns from transitive verbs to two classes of intransitive verbs following administration of Verb Network Strengthening Treatment (VNeST; Edmonds, Nadeau & Kiran, 2009). Based on the Argument Structure Complexity Hypothesis (ASCH; Thompson, 2003), it was predicted that greater generalization would occur to unergatives because unergatives bear a structural relationship to transitive verbs and unaccusatives do not. Results at post-treatment supported the hypothesis with both intransitive verb types showing generalization and slightly higher effect sizes observed for unergative than for unaccusative verbs. At maintenance, this pattern was not maintained due to improvements in production of unaccusative verbs. Results support the findings of Edmonds et al. (2009) that administration of VNeST results in gains on measures of untrained, semantically related verbs as well as standardized measures of lexical retrieval and connected speech. These results also suggest that training transitive verbs results in slight generalization to untrained intransitive verbs; however, it is inconclusive whether unergative and unaccusatives intransitives show differential improvement.

Full textThis present study compares the construction of existential phrases in brazilian Portuguese with the construction of existential phrases in Spanish. This research is under the Historical Linguistics, syntactical and semantic analysis of verbs HAVER and TER in Spanish and Portuguese current and archaic. The existential phrases or time composed in Spanish occur distinctly from Portuguese, TER in Spanish only builds sentences that express relations of possession. Taking into account the origin this two languages and even the achievements of TER and HAVER in Portuguese and Spanish archaics, the objective of this work is to understand why in Spanish we can not form existential sentences as those in Portuguese: 6. Por causa do feriado, há somente três alunos na sala. 7. Por causa do feriado, têm somente três alunos na sala. 8. Hay dos alumnos en el aula. 9. *Tiene una mujer en la cocina. In Spanish, TER is only used to build possessive sentences: 10. Yo tengo un gato y una perrita. Based on principles of the generative theory, I make an analysis of the syntactic and semantics structures of those verbs and their achievements in order to understand the differences and similarities that exist in those constructions in Portuguese and Spanish.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study examines the morpho-syntactic and semantic properties, specifically tense and aspectual properties, of deficient verbs in Xitsonga. Various properties of deficient verbs have given rise to a distinction in verbal categories. Among these a range of features are explored in the study with the aim of establishing whether they playa significant role in relevant linguistic questions: The research on the deficient verb involves questions from three theoretical areas, namely Syntax, Morphology and Semantics. Deficient verbs in Xitsonga and related African languages are generally subcategorized for a clausal complement as illustrated in the following example: [a-hi-hamba [hi-rima laha]] [We-did-usually [plough here]] In the above sentence the deficient verb is hamba and it is followed by a compulsory clause as complement. The main properties of deficient verbs explored in this study relate to the following phenomena: • The deficient verb determines the selection of the mood in Inflection of the clausal complement. • The clausal complement of a deficient verb must have compulsory agreement of its subject with the subject of the matrix clause. • The deficient verbs lack the property which is characteristic of the autonomous verbs i.e. that they may be extended by derivative affixes such as the applicative or causative. • Deficient verbs have distinctive semantic features which are related to two inflectional categories, i.e. aspect and tense. This study concludes that the deficient verbs may express several meanings, including meanings related to duration, habitual, frequentative, progressive, obligative, manner, continuative, concessive and completive.

Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study is to identify the basic emotion verbs in Sesotho. Five basic emotions verb are identified: anger, anxiety, disgust, sadness, and fear. The verbs, expressions, as well as idiophones that express these emotions, are identified. Furthermore, the emotion words are semantically and syntactically analyzed. The outlay of the nine chapters is as follows: Chapter One is an Introduction in which reference is made to the aim of this study, methods used in compiling the data, and the analysis of the data. Chapter Two offers an overview of the basic emotions. A psychological overview of the work of the following scholars is undertaken: Le Doux (1998), Johnson-Laird and Oatley (1992), Tomkins (1962), Plutchik (1980), and Izard (1971); as well as a linguistic overview of the work of the following scholars: Kovecses (1989), Wierzbicka (1989), Frijda (1986), and Goddard (1998). Chapter Three deals with the lexical semantics which will be used in analyzing the different emotion words. Chapter Four deals with anger words. It starts with an overview of anger as treated by the following scholars: Taylor and Mbense (1998), Kovecses (1989), and Lakoff and Kovecses (1987). The treatment of the data (the expression of anger in Sesotho) starts with the definition of anger, followed by expressions of anger and the verbs of anger which are analyzed semantically and syntactically. Another form of the expression of anger, namely the threat, is also analyzed semantically and syntactically. Chapter Five deals with anxiety, Chapter Six with disgust, Chapter Seven with sadness and Chapter Eight with fear. In all these instances, the definition of the emotion word is followed by relevant expressions and verbs which are semantically and syntactically analyzed. The last chapter, Chapter Nine, offers conclusions regarding the five different types of emotion words in Se otho.

This work aims to provide some formal, semantic and pragmatic characterization of the support verb âbotarâ, since the wideness concerning this verb presents distinctive syntactical and semantical behaviors in its structure. From the characteristics of the syntactical and semantical constructions of the verb, three degrees of categorical flushness were explored: free constructions, prototypical constructions and structures which are nearly crystalize. The research was concentrated in the constructions âbotar+SN/SPâ in Brazilian Portuguese, establishing the morpho-syntactical and semantical which the verb âbotarâ assumes when it is constructed as a support verb. The rigorous investigation of the selection properties of âbotarâ and its syntactical and semantical behavior in the âbotar+SN/SPâ structure provided support to describe different employments of the verb, hence leading to a chain of grammatical structures. The linguistic theoretical base used is the functionalism theory of language, which allows to precisely separating ordinary verbs from the support verbs, by treating their aspects in a scalar, rather discrete perspective. The corpus used in the analysis consists of Vsup occurrences in formal and informal Brazilian Portuguese language, however without restricting to only the differences among these modalities, but also using the hypothesis that the CVSup complexity could not be represented in these language modalities. The research allowed to create a systematic syntactical and semantical of expression involving the support verb which present degrees of categorical flushness. In order to achieve that, multiple analyses were conducted in which the syntactical and semantical descriptions of the expressions, in addition to the use of parameters which influences the flushness and the comprehension. As a result of the research, the productivity of the verb is more evident in the popular rather than in the formal usage. In particular, in formal Portuguese of Fortaleza, we verified a lower frequency of use, which confirms our starting hypothesis that the grammaticalization is slower in the formal language, although we could note that it has started already. After detailed analyses in the XVIII, XIX and XX centuries, we concluded that the usage of the verb has been increasing in the past few centuries, in fact the verb is having a gradual continuous grammaticalization. According to the analysis parameters and the examples obtained from the corpus, the description of each of those levels showed that the verb âbotarâ, within the support verb category, can be part of both the less and more integrated structures, depending on the how close those constructions are from the prototype of a support verb construction.

This PhD thesis starts from the observation of constructions with the verb dar in Brazilian Portuguese and it proposes an analysis and classification of these constructions. The analysis of all constructions found in corpus is systematic and consistent, based on Transformational Grammar (HARRIS, 1964) and on Lexicon-Grammar approach (GROSS, 1975; GROSS, 1981). Both theories adopt formal and experimental criteria to make reproducible the identification of base sentences and the classification of constructions with the verb dar. The classification was based on structural and syntactic properties, leading to four classes or categories: (i) full verb or distributional verb, from which 8 verbal senses could be identified; (ii) causative operator verb, whose constructions could be subclassified in 4 groups, depending on the semantic type of the predicative noun; (iii) the verb as a fixed element, in idioms or in proverbs; and (iv) support verb, which is selected by a predicative noun. The first part of this thesis analyzes the constructions with the verb dar as a full verb, as a causative operator verb and as a fixed verb. The second part of this thesis debribes the support verb constructions (SVC), which are formed by the support verb dar (Vsup) and the predicative noun (Npred). This description is extensive, considering all the occurrences in the corpus adopted and identifying the main formal, distributional and transformational SVC properties. These properties were described and formalized in a Lexicon-Grammar table, which is a binary matrix: each line corresponds to a lexical entry (Npred) and each column corresponds to a syntactic property of the construction. In the intersection between each line and each column, we sign “+” or “-”, respectively, if the property is verified or not. The third part of the thesis presents an automatic syntactic analysis of SVC, by using an approach based in dependency rules between its constituents. The rules are automatically generated from the L-G matrix data and, then, those rules are used by the parser in order to extract the dependency between the Npred and the Vsup. Thus, this work aims to advance the state of the art of the general verbal classification in Portuguese and Automatic Processing of Natural Languages, to contribute to the development of computational-lexical resources (the Lexicon-Grammar of nominal constructions) and with automatic parsing.

Full textJose Luiz Fiorin, in his Astucias da Enunciação, analyses the categories of the expression of time, space and person. This is the theoretical basis of this study. The dissertation analyses the French language and deals only with the tense category, verifying how its collocation establishes temporal references in discourse by means of concomitance vs non-concomitance categories (anterior/posterior). It is possible to use this as a basis for the Portuguese language because there are many parallels between French and Portuguese in terms of the word classes which express tense (verb, preposition and conjunction), although there are also some points that do not have parallels , as we shall see. The corpus used in carrying out this work is the most quoted newspaper in France: Le Monde, and the daily newspapers of the first five months of 2006 are the basis for the corpus. Firstly, time is considered, and then systematized, examining the enuncive and enunciative systems and the topographical categories of concomitance vs nonconcomitance in relation to the present, past and future. Certain tenses with no equivalents in Portuguese have been recognised, such as the passé simple, passé antérieur and passé surcomposé. Second degree \"debreagem\" and the subjunctive mood are also analysed, and the dissertation ends with an analysis of the writer\'s intentional action and his verbal neutralizations. Hopefully, this study will contribute to the conceptualisation of the tense category in French, helping the teaching and learning of this language

Full textThis paper is a study of verbal aspects in the book of Psalms, considering their semantic-syntactic value. To this end, the evolution in language studies is considered, based on Hermann Paul (1970); the development of the science of meaning through the work of Breal (1925), enriched by Marquess perspective (2001); the evolution of linguistics through structuralism based on the works of Ferdinand de Saussure and Leonor de Bloomfield and on Noam Chomskys generative grammar. We focus on the discoursive textual dimension to generate formulations about the verb and articulate a relation between the theory of text and discourse according to Travaglias perspective (1991). The study portrays the relations of meaning that verbs take on inside the text, based on the study of aspect according to the assumptions of Castilho (1968), Travaglia (1986, 1991) and Azeredo (2010). To establish relations between verbal aspect and the biblical message of the Psalms, the study draws on Ilaris semantic foundations (2001), and on the semantic and theological commentary in Champlin (2000)

Full textThis research is executed in a declarative- discursive perspective, essentially defined the dialogic language theory of Bakhtin and his circle. This research presents a proposal for analysis of verb-visual language of chronic, exploring them as concrete statements that perspective. The chronicles of Millôr Fernandes exhibit a peculiar feature which is to combine verbal and visual languages and is therefore a material of interest to researches of language. To comply with this proposed analysis of two chronic by Millôr Fernandes, written in a period of six years, the first one, the edition n 1871, of 15/09/2004 and the last one n 2130, of 16/09/2009, respectively, published in Veja magazine. The objective is to observe the dialogical relationship between compositional form and style, considering the theme, the compositional form and the style. The verb-visual language that is composed of other signs is also discussed, in addition to verbal, such as images, colors, fonts, which together comprise the enunciation. The theories studying the colors and its contributions to a more accurate understanding of the sense effects of these utterances chronic. Also it is necessary to consider the uncommon development of Millôr Fernandes chronic, modifying the generic format and style journalistic chronicles. Analyses revealed that, through linguistic- discursive architecture, chronic statements are particular vision of the writer and therefore the textual organization is marked by subjectivity and evaluative tone and writer marked by authors subjectivity and evaluative tone. So he expresses his strandpoint about social events in a humorous way. This work is a suggestion of critical verb-visual reading and expecting to contribute to Applied Linguistic.
