Abstract:
Abstract Given a sentence such as Mary fascinated/admired Sue because she did great, the verb fascinated leads people to interpret she as referring to Mary, whereas admired leads people to interpret she as referring to Sue. This phenomenon is known as implicit causality (IC). Recent studies have shown that verbs’ causality biases closely correspond to the verbs’ semantic classes, as classified in VerbNet, a lexicon that groups verbs into classes on the basis of syntactic behavior. The current study further investigates the relationship between causality biases and semantic classes. Using corpus data we show that the collostruction strength between verbs and the syntactic constructions that VerbNet classes are based on can be a good predictor of causality bias. This result suggests that the relation between semantic class and causality bias is not a categorical matter; more typical members of the semantic class show a stronger causality bias than less typical members.

Abstract:
In this paper, a conceptual graph-based framework for summarizing short texts is proposed. A semantic representation is implemented through conceptual graph structures that consist of concepts and conceptual relations that stand for texts. To summarize conceptual graphs, the most important nodes are selected using a set of operations: generalization, association, ranking, and pruning, which are described. The importance of nodes on weighted conceptual graphs is measured using a modified version of HITS algorithm. In addition, some heuristic rules are used to keep coherent structures based on information from WordNet (hierarchy of concepts) and VerbNet (semantic patterns of verbs). The experimental results show that this approach is effective in summarizing short texts.

Abstract:
Dirichlet-multinomial (D-M) mixtures like latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA) are widely used for both topic modeling and clustering. Prior work on constructing Levin-style semantic verb clusters achieves state-of-the-art results using D-M mixtures for verb sense induction and clustering. We add a bias toward known clusters by explicitly labeling a small number of observations with their correct VerbNet class. We demonstrate that this partial supervision guides the resulting clusters effectively, improving the recovery of both labeled and unlabeled classes by 16%, for a joint 12% absolute improvement in F1 score compared to clustering without supervision. The resulting clusters are also more semantically coherent. Although the technical change is minor, it produces a large effect, with important practical consequences for supervised topic modeling in general.

Abstract:
AbstractThis paper introduces , a new semantic role labeling method that transforms a text into a frame-oriented knowledge graph. It performs dependency parsing, identifies the words that evoke lexical frames, locates the roles and fillers for each frame, runs coercion techniques, and formalizes the results as a knowledge graph. This formal representation complies with the frame semantics used in Framester, a factual-linguistic linked data resource. We tested our method on the WSJ section of the Peen Treebank annotated with VerbNet and PropBank labels and on the Brown corpus. The evaluation has been performed according to the CoNLL Shared Task on Joint Parsing of Syntactic and Semantic Dependencies. The obtained precision, recall, and F1 values indicate that TakeFive is competitive with other existing methods such as SEMAFOR, Pikes, PathLSTM, and FRED. We finally discuss how to combine TakeFive and FRED, obtaining higher values of precision, recall, and F1 measure.

Abstract:
Distinguishing between arguments and adjuncts of a verb is a longstanding, nontrivial problem. In natural language processing, argumenthood information is important in tasks such as semantic role labeling (SRL) and prepositional phrase (PP) attachment disambiguation. In theoretical linguistics, many diagnostic tests for argumenthood exist but they often yield conflicting and potentially gradient results. This is especially the case for syntactically oblique items such as PPs. We propose two PP argumenthood prediction tasks branching from these two motivations: (1) binary argumentadjunct classification of PPs in VerbNet, and (2) gradient argumenthood prediction using human judgments as gold standard, and report results from prediction models that use pretrained word embeddings and other linguistically informed features. Our best results on each task are (1) acc. = 0.955, F1 = 0.954 (ELMo+BiLSTM) and (2) Pearson’s r = 0.624 (word2vec+MLP). Furthermore, we demonstrate the utility of argumenthood prediction in improving sentence representations via performance gains on SRL when a sentence encoder is pretrained with our tasks.

Abstract:
Building computational-linguistic base resources, like computational lexical resources (CLR), is one of the goals of Natural Language Processing (NLP). However, most computational lexicons are specific to English. One of the resources already developed for English is the VerbNet, a lexicon with domain-independent semantic and syntactic information of English verbs. It is based on Levin\'s verb classification, with mappings to Princeton\'s WordNet (WordNet). Since only a few computational studies for languages other than English have been made about Levin\'s classification, and given the lack of a Portuguese CLR similar to VerbNet, the goal of this research was to create a CLR for Brazilian Portuguese (called VerbNet.Br). The manual building of these resources is usually unfeasible because it is time consuming and it can include many human-made errors. Therefore, great efforts have been made to build such resources with the aid of computational techniques. One of these techniques is machine learning, a widely known and used method for extracting linguistic information from corpora. Another one is the use of pre-existing resources for other languages, most commonly English, to support the building of new aligned resources, taking advantage of some multilingual/cross-linguistic features (like the ones in Levin\'s verb classification). The method proposed here for the creation of VerbNet.Br is generic, therefore it may be used to build similar resources for languages other than Brazilian Portuguese. Moreover, the proposed method also allows for a future extension of the resource via subclasses of concepts. The VerbNet.Br has a four-step method: three automatic and one manual. However, experiments were also carried out without the manual step, which can be discarded without affecting precision and recall. The evaluation of the resource was intrinsic, both qualitative and quantitative. The qualitative evaluation consisted in: (a) manual analysis of some VerbNet classes, resulting in a Brazilian Portuguese gold standard; (b) comparison of this gold standard with the VerbNet.Br results, presenting promising results (almost 60% of f-measure); and (c), comparison of the VerbNet.Br results to verb clustering results, showing that both methods achieved similar results. The quantitative evaluation considered the acceptance rate of candidate members of VerbNet.Br, showing results around 90% of acceptance. One of the contributions of this research is to present the first version of VerbNet.Br. Although it still requires linguistic validation, it already provides information to be used in NLP tasks, with precision and recall of 44% and 92.89%, respectively

Abstract:

Abstract:
Ln th is Natural Language Processing Ph. D. Thesis, we aim to perform semantic role labeling on French domain-specific texts. This task first disambiguates the sense of predicates in a given text and annotates its child chunks with semantic roles such as Agent, Patient or Destination. The task helps many applications in domains where annotated corpora exist, but is difficult to use otherwise. We first evaluate on the FrameNet corpus an existing method based on VerbNet, which explains why the method is domain-independant. We show that substantial improvements can be obtained. We first use syntactic information by handling the passive voice. Next, we use semantic informations by taking advantage of the selectional restrictions present in VerbNet. To apply this method to French, we first translate lexical resources. We first translate the WordNet lexical database. Next, we translate the VerbNet lexicon which is organized semantically using syntactic information. We obtains its translation, VerbuNet, by reusing two French verb lexicons (the Lexique-Grammaire and Les Verbes Français) and by manually modifying and reorganizing the resulting lexicon. Finally, once those building blocks are in place, we evaluate the feasibilty of semantic role labeling of French and English in three specific domains. We study the pros and cons of using VerbNet and VerbnNet to annotate those domains before explaining our future work

Abstract:

Abstract:
The object of this thesis is to explain how english two-word verbs are formed, and how they work. The second term of such compounds can be placed either after the verb (the compound is then called a "phrasal verb", as in "fight out") or before it as in "outfight"). Second term after the verb. We present a study of avarious works devoted to the subject (english grammars and dictionaries of phrasal verbs). In most of these studies, the second term is described as either a preposition or a particle. We reject the term "particle" because of its anbiguity, and show that it is always a preposition or an adverb. The interpretation of the term "adverb" however must not be restrictive : words traditionally belonging to other parts of speech (namely nouns, adjectives and verbs) function as adverbs in such compounds. Yet, there are cases when the distinction between preposition and adverb is difficult to establish clearly : in such cases we call the second term a "quasi-adverbe", and show that the acquisition of an adverbial status by the preposition is often marked orally by a pause. Consequently, we propose a three-tiered classification of two-word verbs : prepositional verbs, quasi-adverbial verbs and adverbial verbs. These three categories are illustrated with examples from a corpus which we habe gathered. Second term before the verb : we show that this category is not extinct. We give all the occurrences of the compounds of this type listed in oed which were formed after 1900. We present a contrastive analysis of several signifiant pairs : fight out outfight, look over overlook, etc

Abstract:
Regarding to the difficulty of observing some linguistic phenomena in the mother tongue, without having recourse to a foreign language, this study aimed initially at questioning the relevance of transposing the French concept of support verb to the Arab verb ‘Akhadha (to take) and its variation Ittakhadha (to take for oneself). The study is then defined, starting from a traditional and contemporary corpus, within the specific characteristics of these verbs in classical and modern Arabic, like that of the principal support verb of Libyan Arabic: dâr (to make). Our research fits within the theoretical and methodological framework of the Lexicon-Grammar of Maurice Gross and within that of the theory of the Defining Matrix Analysis of Amr Helmy Ibrahim. After having applied the tests of recognition of the support verb to ‘Akhadha/Ittakhadha, we found approximately 330 nouns, divided into 28 different lists, which are likely to acquire, in more or less forced syntactic-semantic situations, the statute of predicative noun actualized by ' Akhadha and Ittakhadha. The results obtained also allowed us to describe a number of linguistic phenomena such as determining the origin of some Arab nominal groups. These results contribute to the more general goal of this study, which includes the following: the contribution to the construction of a lexicon-grammar of the Arab support verbs; the creation of definitory analytical matrixes for their predicative nouns; and finally, to integrate the linguistic data obtained in the computer processing systems so as to automatically analyze these nouns

Abstract:

Abstract:
ACette étude vise à apporter des réponses à trois questions fondamentales concernant la construction à verbe support : son identification, sa délimitation d’autres constructions qui partagent la même structure de surface et une révision de sa définition classique. Une fois identifié et défini l’objet d’étude, nous avons inscrit le verbe support dans le cadre théorique de l’emploi (G. Gross, 2012) qui nous a permis de l’aborder sous deux angles différents : l’étude contrastive français-espagnol et la traduction : sans oublier l’approche didactique
This study aims to provide some answers to three basic questions concerning light verb structures: its identification, delimitation of other combinations that share the same surface structure and a review of its classical definition. Once identified and defined the object of our study, we adopt the linguistic theory of employ (G. Gross 2012), which allows us to approach light verbs from two perspectives: the contrastive study of French-Spanish light verbs and its translation

Abstract:
Certaines formes polylexicales du « faire preuve de », « faire l’objet de », « avoir lieu », « être en voie de », etc. S’apparente partiellement aux verbes supports et se rapprochent par certaines de leurs caractéristiques des SF. Il s ‘agit de décrire leur double combinatoire, interne et externe et d’en faire une typologie qui rend compte de leur fonctionnement syntactico-sémantique dans l’actualisation des prédicats nominaux
Certain polylexical forms of the type « to show of », « to be the object of “, “to take place”, “to be in process of”, etc. , are partially similar to the light verbs and share some of their characteristics with frozen sequences. We describe their double combinatory, internally and externally, and design a typology which accounts for their syntactico-semantic functioning in the actualisation of nominal predicates
