Full textBuilding computational-linguistic base resources, like computational lexical resources (CLR), is one of the goals of Natural Language Processing (NLP). However, most computational lexicons are specific to English. One of the resources already developed for English is the VerbNet, a lexicon with domain-independent semantic and syntactic information of English verbs. It is based on Levin\'s verb classification, with mappings to Princeton\'s WordNet (WordNet). Since only a few computational studies for languages other than English have been made about Levin\'s classification, and given the lack of a Portuguese CLR similar to VerbNet, the goal of this research was to create a CLR for Brazilian Portuguese (called VerbNet.Br). The manual building of these resources is usually unfeasible because it is time consuming and it can include many human-made errors. Therefore, great efforts have been made to build such resources with the aid of computational techniques. One of these techniques is machine learning, a widely known and used method for extracting linguistic information from corpora. Another one is the use of pre-existing resources for other languages, most commonly English, to support the building of new aligned resources, taking advantage of some multilingual/cross-linguistic features (like the ones in Levin\'s verb classification). The method proposed here for the creation of VerbNet.Br is generic, therefore it may be used to build similar resources for languages other than Brazilian Portuguese. Moreover, the proposed method also allows for a future extension of the resource via subclasses of concepts. The VerbNet.Br has a four-step method: three automatic and one manual. However, experiments were also carried out without the manual step, which can be discarded without affecting precision and recall. The evaluation of the resource was intrinsic, both qualitative and quantitative. The qualitative evaluation consisted in: (a) manual analysis of some VerbNet classes, resulting in a Brazilian Portuguese gold standard; (b) comparison of this gold standard with the VerbNet.Br results, presenting promising results (almost 60% of f-measure); and (c), comparison of the VerbNet.Br results to verb clustering results, showing that both methods achieved similar results. The quantitative evaluation considered the acceptance rate of candidate members of VerbNet.Br, showing results around 90% of acceptance. One of the contributions of this research is to present the first version of VerbNet.Br. Although it still requires linguistic validation, it already provides information to be used in NLP tasks, with precision and recall of 44% and 92.89%, respectively

Full textLn th is Natural Language Processing Ph. D. Thesis, we aim to perform semantic role labeling on French domain-specific texts. This task first disambiguates the sense of predicates in a given text and annotates its child chunks with semantic roles such as Agent, Patient or Destination. The task helps many applications in domains where annotated corpora exist, but is difficult to use otherwise. We first evaluate on the FrameNet corpus an existing method based on VerbNet, which explains why the method is domain-independant. We show that substantial improvements can be obtained. We first use syntactic information by handling the passive voice. Next, we use semantic informations by taking advantage of the selectional restrictions present in VerbNet. To apply this method to French, we first translate lexical resources. We first translate the WordNet lexical database. Next, we translate the VerbNet lexicon which is organized semantically using syntactic information. We obtains its translation, VerbuNet, by reusing two French verb lexicons (the Lexique-Grammaire and Les Verbes Français) and by manually modifying and reorganizing the resulting lexicon. Finally, once those building blocks are in place, we evaluate the feasibilty of semantic role labeling of French and English in three specific domains. We study the pros and cons of using VerbNet and VerbnNet to annotate those domains before explaining our future work

Full textThe object of this thesis is to explain how english two-word verbs are formed, and how they work. The second term of such compounds can be placed either after the verb (the compound is then called a "phrasal verb", as in "fight out") or before it as in "outfight"). Second term after the verb. We present a study of avarious works devoted to the subject (english grammars and dictionaries of phrasal verbs). In most of these studies, the second term is described as either a preposition or a particle. We reject the term "particle" because of its anbiguity, and show that it is always a preposition or an adverb. The interpretation of the term "adverb" however must not be restrictive : words traditionally belonging to other parts of speech (namely nouns, adjectives and verbs) function as adverbs in such compounds. Yet, there are cases when the distinction between preposition and adverb is difficult to establish clearly : in such cases we call the second term a "quasi-adverbe", and show that the acquisition of an adverbial status by the preposition is often marked orally by a pause. Consequently, we propose a three-tiered classification of two-word verbs : prepositional verbs, quasi-adverbial verbs and adverbial verbs. These three categories are illustrated with examples from a corpus which we habe gathered. Second term before the verb : we show that this category is not extinct. We give all the occurrences of the compounds of this type listed in oed which were formed after 1900. We present a contrastive analysis of several signifiant pairs : fight out outfight, look over overlook, etc

Full textRegarding to the difficulty of observing some linguistic phenomena in the mother tongue, without having recourse to a foreign language, this study aimed initially at questioning the relevance of transposing the French concept of support verb to the Arab verb ‘Akhadha (to take) and its variation Ittakhadha (to take for oneself). The study is then defined, starting from a traditional and contemporary corpus, within the specific characteristics of these verbs in classical and modern Arabic, like that of the principal support verb of Libyan Arabic: dâr (to make). Our research fits within the theoretical and methodological framework of the Lexicon-Grammar of Maurice Gross and within that of the theory of the Defining Matrix Analysis of Amr Helmy Ibrahim. After having applied the tests of recognition of the support verb to ‘Akhadha/Ittakhadha, we found approximately 330 nouns, divided into 28 different lists, which are likely to acquire, in more or less forced syntactic-semantic situations, the statute of predicative noun actualized by ' Akhadha and Ittakhadha. The results obtained also allowed us to describe a number of linguistic phenomena such as determining the origin of some Arab nominal groups. These results contribute to the more general goal of this study, which includes the following: the contribution to the construction of a lexicon-grammar of the Arab support verbs; the creation of definitory analytical matrixes for their predicative nouns; and finally, to integrate the linguistic data obtained in the computer processing systems so as to automatically analyze these nouns

Full textIn the theoretical framework of the lexematic morphology, the thesis is devoted to two lexeme-formation processes in French: noun to verb conversion and verb to noun conversion. Both formal and semantic properties of the two processes are presented and a formal representation is proposed within HPSG's framework. First, the two main properties of conversion are discussed, namely the phonological identity between the two lexemes and the fact that they belong to different parts-of-speech. The data which are cases of conversion according to these two properties are delimited. Then the problem of the directionality of conversion is examined and the criteria which are usually used to determine the directionality of conversion are evaluated. The thesis argues that these criteria are not satisfactory, and a new reliable criterion is proposed, which relies on the morphological analysis of the lexemes. Other clues to the directionality of conversion are evaluated, but the conclusion is that often the directionality of the derivation cannot be determined by means of linguistic criteria. Finally, morphophonological and semantic properties of both conversions are examined, and a formal representation of allomorphies and semantics is proposed within HPSG's framework

Full textThe verb, excluded a long time from semantic research, is only recently considered as denoting an action-concept. This work aimed to study verbs under a semantic approach and to determine if a verb rapidly activates semantic knowledge of its patient and agent thematic roles. Action-concepts organization is questioned jointly with verbs processing by an experimental study of interpersonal verbs. Lexical decision task paradigm, used here, revealed an automatic activation of the priviledge -nonassociated - agent representation durgin verbs' on-line processing. Although a same methodology was used for the patients and agents, the results obtained were non identical : patient preferred representation had been only actived when strategic processes were engaged. So, if verb-agent link can be reasonably considered as purely semantic, the verb-patient one should be thought as being semantico-associative

Full textMensalão ( big monthly payment a fee out of the law which was paid for some politicians in Brazil): what is the functional argument for this meaning? How had have this expression brought about history, memory and meaning? Motivated by something that mobilized politics and the Brazilian media, we tried to answer this question from a linguistic position which is connected to the Semantics of an Event (GUIMARÃES, 2002), specially about the relation between the theory and the events foretell, a place that brings sense in the language. Thus, the meaning of a designation is prohibited inside the event and in the period of nowadays; on the other hand it mobilizes the originality of the language. The factual, as is presented by Gadet e Pêcheux (2004), on the other hand, induces the fault, the misunderstanding and the misinterpretation which the subjects cannot control; the functional of the language makes to understand the words and the meanings, but they are tensioned by a dispute inside the place they are originated. Therefore, for this work, we picked out sequences of headlines and reports from O Estado de São Paulo Brazilian newspaper, between 22th and 27th August, 2007, which was the period when the mensalão practices were being judged in STF (Brazilian Higher Federal Court), with the main objective is to show how this media identified the neologism between rows and rows. This study will use for the analysis the concepts of argumentation from Ducrot (1973), to whom the language does not inform, but shows the arguments that make us to produce specific conclusions, and of abstract, according to Guimarães (2004, 2005, 2007), in its semantic domain determination.
Mensalão : qual o funcionamento argumentativo que é movimentado por essa designação? Como esse verbete promoveu história, memória e sentido? Motivados por algo que mobilizou a política e a mídia brasileiras, procuramos responder a essas questões a partir de uma posição linguística que está filiada à Semântica do Acontecimento (GUIMARÃES, 2002), especialmente na relação com o tratamento que essa teoria dá à noção de acontecimento enunciativo, espaço de constituição dos sentidos na língua. Nessa medida, o significado de uma designação é produzido no acontecimento e na temporalidade que lhe é própria e que, por sua vez, mobiliza o real da língua. O real, conforme o apresentam Gadet e Pêcheux (2004), por sua vez, movimenta a falha, o equívoco e os deslizes de interpretação sobre os quais os sujeitos não têm controle; esse funcionamento de língua supõe também que os dizeres e os sentidos produzidos nos espaços de enunciação são tensionados pelo litígio. Assim, recortamos, para este trabalho, sequências de manchetes e textos de reportagens do jornal `O Estado de São Paulo΄, no período de 22 de agosto de 2007 a 27 de agosto de 2007, caracterizando os dias em que a prática do "mensalão" esteve sob julgamento no STF, com o objetivo de mostrar como esse veículo midiático identificou o neologismo em suas linhas e entrelinhas. Esse estudo deslocará como dispositivos de análise os conceitos de argumentação de Ducrot (1981), para quem a língua não informa, mas apresenta argumentos que fazem produzir determinadas conclusões, e de condensação, conforme Guimarães (2004, 2005, 2007) em seu domínio semântico de determinação.

Full textWe propose in this dissertation a semantic study of malagasy verbs, starting from an analysis of all predicative categories. This study investigates the verb structure and also accounts for the principles which determine its linguistic featuring and categorization. We thus isolate two types : the "autonomous verbs" and the "morphematic verbs". For a more complete characterization, we start with the theory of Simeon Rajaona (1972) which concentrates on the morphological level. We further deal with the semantic and cognitive dimension as it is anchored in morphology, but was not seriously taken into account in previous work, especially in traditional grammar. We thus systematically explore the semantic contribution of every morphem , insisting on its “aspectual” dimensions. We put forward a seminal distinction between "simple verbalising morphems" and "meaningful morphems". Such a distinction allows for an explicitation of the rules and regularities that control the possible combinations. We argue that this patterning is equally appropriate to the explanation of metaphors and metaphorical effects (and punnings. . . ) triggered by some of the actual combinations. We thus wish to involve a cultural perspective in our semantic analysis

Full textThis work of the verbal polysemy which joins in the theoretical frame of the Applicative and Cognitive Grammar suggests representing verbs of transfer of the Korean. Every polysemous meaning of a verb will be represented by a semantico-cognitive schema and integrated into a semantic network of the same verb. This work aims then at arguing the anti-anti-relativistic hypotheses, according to which every language builds its own cognitive representations by means of the schema which involves abstracted primitives. We took for object of analysis five verbs indicating the unidirectional transfer (juda ’to give’, batda ’to receive’, -tda ’to obtain’) or the bidirectional transfer (sada ’to buy’ and phalda ’to sell’), and a verb of perception (boda ’to see’) which overlaps partially with verbs of transfer. As result we bring out seven general types of the schemas which correspond to the various abstract scenes realized by the verbs of transfer, except for the auxiliary uses which are not homogeneous and thus do not come down to a generic shape

Full textI denna studie är syftet att undersöka hur kommunikationen fungerar för ett barn, i detta fall en flicka, som har diagnosen Cerebral pares, och dessutom saknar verbalt tal. Vi vill även undersöka hur skolan har lagt upp sin strävan att uppfylla läroplanens mål genom att inkludera en elev med ett funktionshinder. De frågor vi avsåg att besvara med studien var: Använder man med någon speciell metod för att stödja kommunikationen hos ett barn som har diagnosen Cerebral pares, och som saknar verbalt tal? Vilka fördelar respektive nackdelar finns för denna elev med att gå i en vanlig klass? Våra metoder består av observationer av eleven i olika miljöer i skolan samt intervjuer med tio personer där de intervjuade har god kännedom om den funktions¬hindrades kommunikativa förmåga. Fallstudien genomfördes på en skola i en kommun i norra Sverige. Resultatet av studien visar att metoden Move and Walk fungerar bra för denna flicka. Det framkom även i studien att elevassistenten har en viktig funktion för att stödja flickans kommunikativa utveckling. Vidare visade resultatet på att det fanns både fördelar och nackdelar för det aktuella barnet med att gå i vanlig klass. Den stora fördelen är att ett gott samspel kan utvecklas mellan flickan och klasskamraterna. De nackdelar som framkommit är bland annat att det höga tempot i skolan gör att barnet ibland har svårt att hinna med de aktiviteter som andra barn, utan detta handikapp, lättare klarar av.

Full textThis thesis explores the construction of sense in English particle and prepositional verbs. It departs from the premise that meaning is something constructed during the process of situated usage. A corpus of 286 combinations formed through the association of a verbal element with over are analysed in context in order to identify the various factors which influence final semantic interpretation. A particular focus of the study is the relationship between form and meaning. The relationship between syntactic configuration and semantic interpretation is investigated and the various ways in which the number and nature of the verbal and/or prepositional arguments can impact semantic interpretation is explored. The role of the extralinguistic in the construction of sense is examined. The major theoretical questions dealt with concern the categorisation of particles and prepositions, the interaction between particle/prepositional semantics and verbal semantics, the internal structure of particle verbs, and the reasons why the particle in a particle verb can either precede or follow the verbal object. The study also explores several more general areas of linguistic investigation including the conceptualisation of movement, resultativity, transitivity and polysemy. During the course of the study a wide range of factors which influence the final semantic interpretation of particle and prepositional verbs in English are identified

Full textThe cognitive and neuronal mechanisms underlying the retrieval of nouns and verbs are a complex issue, which has attracted the interest of neurolinguists and cognitive neuroscientists during the last two decades. Unfortunately, the results emerged from previous studies are often contradictory. A frequent claim in neurolinguistic literature is the anterior-posterior dichotomy of the noun and verb retrieval. Within this framework nouns are associated with left temporal brain areas whereas verbs rely on structures in the left frontal lobe. This thesis investigates the brain areas which are involved in silent naming of German noun and verb pictures by means of event related fMRI. In addition the influence of age-of-acquisition on brain activity during picture naming was examined. Noun and verb retrieval revealed a similar pattern of bilateral occipital, left frontal, temporal and inferior parietal cortical activation, albeit verb naming resulted in stronger activation in left frontal and bilateral temporal areas. The results do not confirm the anterior-posterior hypothesis. They support rather a similar cortical network for the processing of nouns and verbs in picture naming. Furthermore the results indicated that age-of-acquisition modulates brain activation during silent picture naming. Cortical activation for late learned words was detected in the left inferior frontal cortex and in the left basal temporal language area. The data were discussed and interpreted on the basis of current cognitive and neuroanatomical models of language processing.

Full textŠio bakalauro darbo tema – „Maitinimosi veiksmažodžių semantika vokiečių kalboje“. Tyrimo tikslas – remiantis komponentine reikšmės analize išnagrinėti surinktus maitinimosi procesą reiškiančius veiksmažodžius bei išanalizuoti metaforiškus posakius su maitinimosi veiksmažodžiais taikant kognityvinės lingvistikos metaforų teoriją. Buvo rastas 91 maitinimosi procesą reiškiantis veiksmažodis ir 82 metaforiškai vartojamų maitinimosi veiksmažodžių pavyzdžiai. Atlikus komponentinę analizę gauti tokie rezultatai: Maitinimosi veiksmažodžių semantinė grupė suskirstyta į dvi dideles grupes: VALGYTI (vok. ESSEN) ir GERTI (vok. TRINKEN). Grupė VALGYTI suskirstyta į 14 mažesnių semantinių pogrupių, o grupė GERTI – į 8. Kiekvienam pogrupiui priskirtas tik jam būdingas požymis, pvz. VALGYTI grupės požymiai: ´kažką maitinti´ (vok. ´jmdm. Nahrung geben´), ´daug ir godžiai valgyti´ (vok. ´viel und begierig essen´), ´valgyti tam tikru paros metu´ (vok. ´für bestimmte Tagesmahlzeit´), ´valgyti kažką saldaus´ (vok. ´etw. Leckeres essen´), ´gerai ir daug valgyti´ (vok. ´gut und reichlich essen´), ´valgyti žolę´ (vok. ´Gras essen´), ´maitinti gyvūną´ (vok. ´einem Tier essen geben´), ´viską suvalgyti´ (vok. ´essen, bis nichts mehr da ist´), ´valgyti su tam tikru stalo įrankiu´ (vok. ´mit einem bestimmten Besteck essen´) ir kt. The subject of the thesis is The Semantics of Verbs' Nutrition in German. The main aim of the paper is the analysis of verbs' nutrition in German invoking the componential analysis and the theory of conceptual metaphor. 91examples of verbs' nutrition and 82 metaphorical sayings have been selected and grouped into 2 groups, i.e. TO EAT and TO DRINK. The group TO EAT is comprised of 14 semantic subgroups and the group TO DERINK - 8 subgroups. Every subgroup has a different feature. The results of the componetial analysis are: 9 conceptual metaphors have been distinguished. THE NUTRITION is related figuratively to THE FRAME OF MIND, COGNITIVE ABILITY, SPACE, ROAD, BODY, MONEY, DATA, ELECTRICITY SUPPLY, INFORMATION.
