Abstract:
Abstract Cold weather associates with higher cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in various climates. It is also known that exposure to a cold environment instantly activates sympathetic nervous system and elevates blood pressure (BP) in healthy individuals. Hypertension can increase sympathetic reactivity and arterial stiffness, and could therefore exaggerate these cold-related changes. We implemented an experimental study to assess cardiovascular responses to habitual type of cold exposure among subjects with untreated hypertension. We selected a random sample of middle-aged men in the ci

Abstract Type 2 diabetes can be prevented if the impaired glucose tolerance is found. Oral glucose tolerance test is needed in clinical practise for that but it is expensive and inconvenient. Obesity, hypertension, dyslipidemia and hypertension in pregnancy are factors often found in persons with type 2 diabetes. When there are more than one factor in same person the risk of type 2 diabetes multiplies. The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of abnormal glucose metabolism and risk factors of type 2 diabetes in middle aged Finnish population in Savitaipale municipality and d

Abstract The aim of the present study was to describe the effects of different types of cold exposures on blood pressure (BP) and heart rate (HR) and to test how these cold-induced effects are modulated by antihypertensive drugs representing different kind of mechanisms of action. The tested drugs represented the following antihypertensive drug subgroups: metoprolol from beta-blocking agents, carvedilol from alfa- and beta-blocking agents, lisinopril from angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors, eprosartan from angiotensin II antagonists, amlodipine from calcium channel blockers and hydrochlo

Abstract Blood pressure is usually measured on a clinic visit as a momentary value. It can also be defined as a continuum based on several repeated measurements. Ambulatory blood pressure measurement (ABPM) is a method of repeated BP measurements targeted to evaluate the circadian blood pressure (BP). Nondipping, i.e., the lack of reduction of BP during the night, has been shown to associate with cardiovascular endpoints. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between 24-hour ABPM and cardio-metabolic confounders in a cross-sectional, population-based study design. Particular

Abstract Cardiovascular disease is currently the leading cause of mortality worldwide. Several factors contribute to its development, including increased body mass index, high blood pressure and smoking. Many genetic and behavioural determinants of these risk factors have been identified, but the interplay between them along the life course is still poorly understood. Life course epidemiology and statistical methods developed for life course studies are required to enhance understanding of the aetiologies of these risk factors for more effective prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disea

Abstract The purpose of this study was to find out and compare the physiological effects of different types of non-hypothermic cold exposure tests in man. In whole-body cold exposures lightly clothed subjects were exposed to 10°C for 2 hours (single exposure), as well as repeatidly for 2 h and 1 h on ten successive days in separate studies. For local cold exposures, cold pressor tests (immersion into ice-cold water) of both hands and both feet were used. In whole-body cold exposures, several hormonal and metabolic parameters as well as cold sensations were measured. In local cold exposures the

Korkea verenpaine on yleisimpiä suomalaisten terveyteen liittyviä ongelmia, yksi kansantaudeistamme. Abstract Multimodal measurements are increasingly being employed in the study of human physiology. Brain studies in particular can draw advantage of simultaneous measurements using different modalities to analyse correlations, mechanisms and relationships of physiological signals and their dynamics in relation to brain functions. Moreover, multimodal measurements help to identify components of physiological dynamics generated specifically by the brain. Abstract:
Abstract Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH), a common complication of elevated blood pressure (BP), is a risk factor for cardiovascular (CV) morbidity and mortality. Adiponectin has been shown to have cardioprotective effects and is inversely associated with LVH. BP can be measured at a clinical visit, as a momentary value. Ambulatory blood pressure (APB) measurement (ABPM) is a method of repeated BP measurements through a defined period, targeted to evaluate the circadian BP profile. High BP and ABPM have been shown to be associated with LVH and left ventricular diastolic dysfunction (LVDD).
