Abgesehen von rechtsradikalen und neokonservativen Kreisen ist die größte Mehrheit der Deutschen heute davon überzeugt, daß die Vergangenheitsbewältigung eine vordringliche Aufgabe der Bundesrepublik ist. Die Ausstellung «Vernichtungskrieg. Verbrechen der Wehrmacht 1941 bis 1944», der publizistische Erfolg von Daniel Goldhagen oder auch die Kontroverse zwischen Martin Walser und Ignatz Bubis sind Beweise dafür. Dies war allerdings nicht immer so. Die Notwendigkeit der Vergangenheitsbewältigung war in keiner Weise selbstverständlich für die Deutschen der Nachkriegszeit zwischen 1945 und 1960. Dieser Aufsatz umreißt, wie die nationalsozialistische Vergangenheit damals thematisiert wurde in der Zusammenbruchgesellschaft und dann in den fünfziger Jahren war der politische, gesellschaftliche und kulturelle Kontext nur bedingt geeignet für eine aus heutiger Sicht befriedigende Konfrontation mit der NS-Zeit. Diese Vorgeschichte der Vergangenheitsbewältigung war durch widersprüchliche Tendenzen zwischen Diabolisierung und Verdrängung gekennzeichnet.

Given the turbulent nature of recent German history, studies of postwar German memory understandably have focused upon the issue of Vergangenheitsbewältigung—the difficult process of “coming to terms” with the historical experience of the Third Reich and the Second World War. This topic's magnitude has rightly inspired considerable scholarly attention but, at the same time, it has also had the unintended effect of overshadowing other German struggles with memory. In recent years, however, this state of affairs has begun to change. As the epochal events of 1989–90 have forced Germans to confront still another burdensome historical legacy—that of communism—the increasing calls for a “second” Vergangenheitsbewältigung have, for better or worse, broken the monopolistic hold of the Third Reich on the nation's historical consciousness. course of this new Vergangenheitsbewältigung by comparing it to the experience of coming to terms with the legacy of Nazism.

Abstract:

- The article discusses that specific aspect of German political culture known as Vergangenheitsbewältigung, i.e. the going over the totalitarian past through a threefold reworking: judicial (trials, convictions, political and administrative purges), economic (compensations and reparations) and cultural (a deep historical knowledge of what happened, the working out of moral and law criteria for judgment, an at least symbolic declaration of solidarity towards the victims). The German case is interesting because of its uniqueness. First of all, from the judicial point of view, the way the past was reworked has had an extraordinary impact, being at the root of present developments in international criminal law. From the political and the moral-philosophical perspectives, no other population has so thoroughly re-defined its identity with respect to its past: constitutional and post-national patriotism are a case in point. One more exceptional aspect is that, after the reunification, Germany has lived through a new Vergangenheitsbewältigung which suggests interesting comparative considerations.

Im vergleichenden Blick auf Japan, das in den 1950er Jahren ungleich weniger Anstrengungen unternommen hatte, seine ultranationalistisch-militaristische Vergangenheit zu bewältigen und wo die «68er»-Bewegung dann dennoch so gut wie ganz auf eine Thematisierung dieser Problematik verzichtete, wird eine Gegenthese entwickelt, die den instrumenteilen Charakter des gegen die Väter-Generation gerichteten Verdrängungsvorwurfs der deutschen «68er» betont: Die politische Wahrnehmungsfähigkeit musste 1968 schon starke (neo-)marxistisch Eintrübungen aufweisen, um in der bereits gut gefestigten Demokratie der Bundesrepublik Ängste wegen eines angeblich bevorstehenden «neuen 1933» zu entwickeln.

Axel Schildt, renommierter Historiker aus Hamburg, entdeckte eine Variante der besonderen Art, die nach 1945 der NS-affine Schriftsteller und Publizist Kurt Ziesel erfand. Ziesel, später Geschäftsführer der „Deutschland- Stiftung“, griff bevorzugt liberale, aber auch konservative Intellektuelle mit belasteter Vergangenheit an, die nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg einflussreiche Positionen in Presse und Rundfunk erlangten, ohne ihre Verstrickungen im „Dritten Reich“ thematisiert zu haben. Ziesels ebenso infame wie gut dokumentierte Angriffe fanden viel Beifall bei Vertriebenenverbänden und Teilen der CSU, während die Betroffenen und ihre Netzwerke ratlos waren und keine angemessene Antwort fanden, wie Axel Schildt eindrucksvoll zeigen kann.

This observation, registered by Marianne Enigl and Herbert Lackner, points to an incontestable and compelling feature of contemporary Austrian political culture: during the 1980s and 1990s, the first meaningful steps toward an Austrian Vergangenheitsbewältigung developed out of a discussion of Austrians' military service during the Nazi era and its highly problematic association with wartime atrocities and genocide. Exploration of this important theme had been avoided throughout the period of the Second Republic by a carefully cultivated expression of public memory. The inherent tension between the internationally sanctioned notion of Austrian victimization during the Nazi years and the pride of many Austrian veterans in having performed their soldierly duties (Wehrpflichterfüllung) had been a taboo subject.

Trümmerfilme (“rubble films”) provide a first-hand, although cinematographic, view of postwar Germany. They depict the myriad of postwar living conditions and day-to-day problems. The German word Vergangenheitsbewältigung means “the process of dealing with the past.” This term captures the film directors' respective approaches to depicting the past as a process rather than a single act. The Trümmerfilme are essential for anyone studying the postwar period. Although the films do not provide a complete or uniform approach, they provide numerous insights into the predominant problems faced by Germans during the immediate postwar period. Through the depiction of these social conditions, the films provide insight into the origin of the Basic Law's commitment to the Sozialstaat.

El artículo presenta una aproximación comparativa a las distintas formas, en que dos países (Alemania y España) se han encarado y siguen encarándose a su respectivo pasado de violencia y guerra. En Alemania se habla de Vergangenheitsbewältigung (‘superación del pasado’), en España de la ‘recuperación de la memoria histórica’. Para ambos casos, el texto analiza críticamente el momento en el que empezó la reflexión colectiva y auto-crítica sobre el pasado problemático, se contrastan las diferentes visiones sobre las correspondientes guerras y dictaduras, se resalta la importancia de las fases postbélicas y de las generaciones postdictatoriales que tienen que tratar con su pasado. Si bien entre los casos español y alemán hay más diferencias que simili-tudes, muchos aspectos resultan más comprensibles usando el método de la comparación.

Während es zu vielen Neuerungen und Verfeinerungen auf dem Gebiet der Forschungsmethoden gekommen ist, ist der inhaltliche Theoriefortschritt sehr ins Stocken geraten und die Schaffung eines kohärenten konzeptuellen Gerüsts im Sinne eines Rahmenmodells der Psychologie in noch größere Ferne gerückt. Hierzu soll die Frage thematisiert werden, welche fachbezogenen historischen Verläufe sowie welche gesellschaftlichen, (wissenschafts-)politischen Bedingungen der gegenwärtigen Wissenschaftskultur diese Situation herbeigeführt haben. Lange Zeit schien der Kolonialismus im Geschichtsbewusstsein der Deutschen eine nebengeordnete bzw. beiläufige Rolle zu spielen und die Beteiligung Deutschlands am Kolonialprozess wurde wenig Achtung geschenkt. Erst die Entstehung einer schwarzafrikanischen postkolonialen Literatur in Deutschland hat dazu beigetragen, die Kolonialerfahrung als gemeinsames Erbe zwischen Deutschen und Afrikanern sichtbar zu machen. Im Mittelpunkt von Texten afrikanischer Autoren in deutscher Sprache steht das Zurückschauen auf vergangene Ereignisse, die aus verschiedenen Perspektiven thematisiert werden. Der vorliegende Beitrag untersucht am Beispiel von zwei kamerunischen Texten die Erinnerung an die deutsche Kolonialvergangenheit. Diese postkoloniale Aufarbeitung der Kolonialerinnerung, wie sie von Daniel Mepin und Philomène Atyame dargestellt wird, kreist um Vergangenheitsbewältigung und gegenseitige Kulturannäherung. Few issues have possessed the centrality or sparked as much controversyin the postwar history of the Federal Republic of Germany(FRG) as the struggle to come to terms with the nation’s Nazi past.This struggle, commonly known by the disputed term Vergangenheitsbewältigung,has cast a long shadow upon nearly all dimensions ofGerman political, social, economic, and cultural life and has preventedthe nation from attaining a normalized state of existence inthe postwar period. Recent scholarly analyses of German memoryhave helped to broaden our understanding of how “successful” theGermans have been in mastering their Nazi past and have shed lighton the impact of the Nazi legacy on postwar German politics andculture. Even so, important gaps remain in our understanding ofhow the memory of the Third Reich has shaped the postwar life ofthe Federal Republic.

Dabei wird deutlich, dass den andauernden ideologischen Diskursen der deutschen Geschichte seit der Jahrhundertwende zwar eine stark subjektive negative Kritik entgegengestellt wird, die sich aber, dem noch sehr jugendlichen Alter des homodiegetischen Helden, aber auch den gesellschaftlichen Möglichkeiten der Zeit entsprechend, nur teilweise durchsetzen kann.

Abstract:

This paper examines antiforeigner violence in the former East German towns of Hoyerswerda (1991) and Rostock-Lichtenhagen (1992) as a case study for both the heightened presence of neo-Nazi/skinhead groups in Germany following 1989/in the Wende period, and the memory politics employed by German politicians in the Bundestag, as well as in media discourse, with regards to the problems entailed in uniting two Germanys which had experienced entirely difference processes of Vergangenheitsbewältigung. My analysis of the riots focuses mainly on the mnemonic discourses surrounding them, in particular the work that the image of “the East German skinhead” does within the broader context of German memory politics. This paper is also situated within the context of present-day German politics with regards to shifting cultures of memory and the electoral success of Alternative for Germany.

Abstract:

This article gives an overview of the changing debate on National Socialism and the question of guilt in German society. Memory had a different meaning in different generations, shaping distinct phases of dealing with the past, from silence and avoidance to sceptical debate, from painful “Vergangenheitsbewältigung” to a general memory of suffering. In present-day Germany, memory as collective personal memory has faded away. At the same time, literature has lost its role as a main medium to mass media like cinema and television. Furthermore, memory has become fragmented. Large groups of members of the German society, like immigrants, see the past from a different perspective altogether. Although the remembrance of the time of National Socialism is still a distinctive part of Germany’s political culture, it has become more generalised, with “Holocaust memory” as a globalised symbol for a fundamental “break” in Western culture.

Abstract:

This article explores the changing perception of "diversity" and "cultural difference" in Germany and shows how they were central in the construction of "self" and "other" throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries affecting minorities such as Jews, Poles, and others. It examines different levels of legal and political action toward minorities and immigrants in this process and explores how the perception and legal framework for the Turkish minority in the past sixty years was influenced by historical patterns of such perceptions and their memory. The article tries to shed some light on how the nature of coming-to-terms with the past ( Vergangenheitsbewältigung ) and the memory of the Holocaust have long prohibited a broader discussion on inclusion and exclusion in German society. It makes some suggestions as to what forced Germans in the postunification era to reconsider legislation, as well as society's approach to "self" and "other" under the auspices of the closing of the "postwar period" and a newly emerging united Europe.

Abstract In recent years, reenactment has emerged as a compelling and controversial form of coming to terms with the past (Vergangenheitsbewältigung). As reconstructions of past events inflected through contemporary contexts and concerns, reenactments prompt an affective, empathetic, and ethical engagement with the past. This makes them a particularly provocative means of engaging with the figure of the perpetrator and with questions of guilt, responsibility, and agency. This article reads reenactments by Romuald Karmakar and Milo Rau as challenges to a teleological conception of history and simplistic binaries of good versus evil. Their works stage perpetrator documents in their entirety, without commentary. In this way they participate in the turn away from the “hermeneutics of suspicion” toward an affirmative critical practice. Without an interpretive “safety net,” the audience must engage with the reenacted event on its own terms, affirmatively, and thus risk the security of their preconceived positions. Only then can the repetition engender difference.

Dialogische Traumatherapie ist eine nachweisbar sehr wirksame, mehrphasige, integrative Therapie für Menschen mit chronischen Beeinträchtigungen im Sinne der Volldiagnose Posttraumatische Belastungsstörung (PTBS) und Komplexe PTBS. In den vier Phasen »Sicherheit und Symptomexploration«, »Stabilität und Konfliktstärke«, »Dialogische Trauma-Exposition«, »Integration, Abschiede, Neuorientierung« stehen die posttraumatische Stabilisierung des Selbst und die Konfliktfähigkeit im Vordergrund. Dazu ist sowohl die Arbeit an der Bewältigung der Leitsymptome der PTBS (»Vergangenheitsbewältigung«) wie auch die Arbeit an der Gegenwartsorientierung durch Stärkung der Wahrnehmung und Beziehungsgestaltung auf Augenhöhe erforderlich, auch und besonders in der Patient-Therapeut-Beziehung (Vier-Stuhl-Technik). Neben der Symptomfreiheit werden auch besonders die Stärkung der Selbstprozesse und die (Wieder-)Herstellung der Dialogfähigkeit als wichtige Therapieziele betrachtet. Diese zu erreichen, wurde eine neue Methode der Arbeit an interaktionellen Konflikten entwickelt: die Methode der Arbeit mithilfe von vier Stühlen. Die Wirksamkeit der Dialogischen Traumatherapie ist nach klinischer Einschätzung, vor allem aber auch durch empirische, randomisierte kontrollierte Studien (RCT), wissenschaftlich auf höchstem Niveau nachgewiesen.

In the 1960s and 1970s on both sides of the Atlantic, the American involvement in Vietnam and the demand for political and social change in response to these policies translated into activism on university campuses. Berkeley and Berlin became synonymous with protest; Mario Savio and Rudi Dutschke became the heroes of these student movements. However, this first postwar generation of German students at this time also was entangled in an additional personal and political crisis prompted by the war, namely their parents' and grandparents' past, the infamous Vergangenheitsbewältigung of the Third Reich. These children—born in the thirties and early forties (most in the war years themselves)—faced an older generation who not only instigated a world war but also participated, either implicitly or explicitly, in the persecution and extermination of six million Jews and other so-called undesirables. It was a harsh and painful time for these young people and their elders, the latter who were attacked for their complicity and the former who were accused of hubris.

In his late novel Doktor Faustus (1947) – written in exile in the USA during the Second World War – Thomas Mann has the fictional “German composer” Adrian Leverkühn “take back” Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony with his last cantata “Dr. Fausti Weheklag”. The humanism of the “Ode to Joy” with its final exultation “Alle Menschen werden Brüder” had been discredited by dictatorship, terror, war and the Holocaust, and by patriotic and nationalistic appropriations by various political systems. In the course of Germany’s coming to terms with its past – the so-called “Vergangenheitsbewältigung” – from the mid-1960s onwards, a number of composers reacted to the scandal of the misuse of this major classical work of art and its liberating message with compositions whose direct reference to Beethoven’s Ninth can also be understood as “retractions” of this symphony. This article investigates different approaches to Beethoven’s controversial work in Bernd Alois Zimmermann’s Requiem für einen jungen Dichter (1967–1969), Hans Werner Henze’s Sinfonia N. 9 (1995–1997), Andreas F. Staffel’s Beethoven off set – oder: ich nehme sie zurück die neunte Symphonie (2015–2019) and many other works.
