Freer, N. W. "Vergil and Philodemus." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2014. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1433606/.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation explores the relationship between the poetry of Vergil and the texts and doctrines of the Epicurean poet and philosopher Philodemus in the light of papyrological evidence confirming Vergil’s association with Philodemus and his Epicurean school on the Bay of Naples. I show that Vergil engages extensively with a wide range of Philodeman intertexts in the Eclogues, the Georgics, and the Aeneid, and suggest ways in which an appreciation of these interactions may inform our interpretations of Vergil’s poetry. I argue that Philodemus’ views on ethics and poetics, his epigrams, and his Epicurean exegesis of Homer are all reflected in Vergil’s works, multiplying its interpretative possibilities. Although Vergil appears to engage in a close dialogue with Philodemus throughout his poetic career, I find that he is by no means a doctrinaire student, but an intelligent and at times combative reader of his teacher’s texts and doctrines. My first chapter discusses Philodemus’ life in Italy, his surviving works, and his influence within Roman society, before reviewing the evidence for Vergil’s Epicurean education under Philodemus. In the next chapter I argue that Vergil’s conception of poetry in the Eclogues and the Georgics was shaped to a large extent by the Epicurean theory of poetry elaborated in Philodemus’ treatises On Poems and On Music. My third chapter analyses Vergil’s representation of anger throughout the Aeneid in the light of Philodemus’ treatise On Anger. I suggest that Philodemus’ theory of anger provided an important model for Vergil’s characterisation of a range of major figures, including Aeneas, Turnus, Dido, Amata, Juno, Mezentius, and Nisus and Euryalus. In the fourth and final chapter I examine Vergil’s interaction with a number of possible Philodeman intertexts in the Carthage episode in Aeneid 1 and 4, through which he appears to invite an Epicurean reading of the values and motivations of the Carthaginians and the Trojans.

Abstract:
Thesis (M. Arch.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 2007.
Includes bibliographical references (p. 114-115).
This thesis considers a new edge strategy for an Insufficient waterfront. The shore of Bass Harbor poses a problem significant to the whole Maine coast, as the access and Infrastructure imperative to the fishing industries is unable to compete with the economic power of the private second home industry. Thus, expecting that neither real estate, nor tourism, nor industry will be sacrificed, a re-calibration of the existing coastal structure is necessary in order to accommodate all who want and need the coast of Maine. I am proposing that a focus on the existing systems of the site can determine an edge strategy that will organize and expand the lobster trade's presence within the growing realm of the private and recreational interests. The shortage of space and access will be addressed through designing a new means of occupying the edge, expanding the public and private program within the parameters of the site in order to accommodate a new multiplicity and density of program, space and infrastructure. Proposed as a blurring of disciplines and a breakdown of boundaries and scale, the access point will compose a coherent resolution between the plurality of zones, programs and boundaries as it extends outward as a threshold to the trade The access point will compose the edge as a coherent singular surface. The edge, as a finite space, will be embedded with multiple functions.

Arnod, Jeanclaude. "Luchino Visconti entre Giovanni Verga et Gabriele d’Annunzio." Thesis, Paris 10, 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017PA100164/document.

Full text
Abstract:
Luchino Visconti (1906-1976), was a movie, theatre and opera director. He dedicated all his career to the love of art, with a particular focus on the literature from the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuryThe goal of our study is to analyse the filmography of Luchino Visconti, more specifically the following four films: La terra trema, Rocco e i suoi fratelli, Vaghe stelle dell’Orsa and L’innocente where the references to the works of Giovanni Verga and Gabriele d’Annunzio are most explicit. More specifically, we want to demonstrate that the undeniable influence of writers such as Thomas Mann and Marcel Proust on Visconti has been overvalued, at the expense of the two Italian authors, Verga and d’Annunzio, who have heavily influenced Visconti’s entire filmography

De, Francisci E. "Women in Verga and Pirandello : from page to stage." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2013. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1447137/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis considers the transposition from short story into play, in the work of Verga and Pirandello, concentrating on a comparison between their methods of presenting the female characters in the two genres, and assessing what occurs when the voice of the narrator is replaced by the exchanges of the characters on stage. The main tenet is to challenge the critical view that women in the authors’ work represent the weaker vessel. The close reading of the selected pairs of texts illustrates how, although the female characters take a subsidiary position in the triangular relationship in which they are involved, they nonetheless remain the catalysts of the action by precipitating the main events. Even though (off stage) women at the time were being denied a political voice, it is argued here that once the characters rely on dialogue in the passage from short story to play, they gain a voice of their own on stage. Their ability for articulation thus reveals the characters as women capable of discussing their thoughts and feelings for themselves, which ultimately enables them to break away from their traditional identification with nature and emotion – making an examination of this sort particularly relevant to the topic of women. Part of the investigation briefly discusses how contemporary (male) theatre critics responded to these leading roles, and takes into consideration the women who are instrumental in providing the link from the narrative genre to the theatrical: the role of the actress, particularly Eleonora Duse who had a significant influence on early interpretations of Verga’s women and on Pirandello’s developing notions of the merging of art and reality. In conclusion, the relationship between the techniques of the two authors in adapting their works from page to stage sheds new light on why the narrative genre is particularly suited to Verga’s preoccupations, and why the dramatic form is more effective in exploring Pirandello’s umorismo. Even though the diachronic overview of their theatre shows how Verga’s approach veers towards the direction later taken by Pirandello, it also exemplifies how Pirandello exploits the means of the theatre to make significant innovations, spanning the transition from Realism to Modernism – a divergence from his predecessor which is emphasized through his treatment of the female voice on stage.

de, Vega Sean David. "Translation and transgression in William Morris's Aeneids of Vergil (1875)." Diss., University of Iowa, 2016. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/6934.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study of William Morris’s 1875 translation of Vergil’s Aeneid is to rehabilitate this translation after more than a century of almost total critical neglect. Following an introductory chapter that situates Morris within the context of emerging theories that seek to characterise the problems that are unique to classical translation activity and the nature of “retranslation” as promulgated by Laurence Venuti and others, I examine Morris’s preparation for this massive classical task, interrogating the extent and character of his classical education at Marlborough College and Oxford University in the 1850s. I then examine his “two Aeneids” – an illumination on vellum of Vergil’s epic in Latin, begun in 1874 with Edward Burne-Jones but never completed, and his subsequent unadorned translation of the Aeneid into English, which he completed in 1875 and which was published by the end of that same year – in a third chapter that engages what little criticism is available on the illuminations, before describing and interpreting them for the reader (plates are also provided as an Appendix.) My fourth chapter, the centrepiece of the dissertation, constitutes a close critical reading of Morris’s translation alongside the Latin original, and the final chapter rounds out the discussion by way of addressing the spotty critical treatment of this lengthy work of classical translation, after which I situate Morris within the history of English translations of the Roman epic by means of theory: namely, Antoine Berman’s “retranslation hypothesis”, Lawrence Venuti’s concept of “doubly-abusive fidelity”, and Siobhan Brownlie’s proposal for a post-structuralist retranslation theory. I conclude that a just interpretation of Morris’s achievement will begin with an understanding of his aesthetic, ethnic, and political motivations, and I conclude that his Aeneids are a unique and valuable contribution to late Victorian classical translation praxis.

Abstract:
To address every aspect in which Cleopatra VII asserted her right to rule and maintain the favor of her own subjects and of Rome would be far too large a task for anything less than a book-length treatment. Rather than attempt to address multiple issues, this thesis addresses just one aspect of Cleopatra's political strategy to visualize her legitimacy as ruler: namely a combination of masculine and feminine elements in her iconography. This thesis will then follow the same themes in elements of Cleopatra's visual rhetoric was seized upon by the poets of Augustan Rome, who used it to the opposite effect, making her out to be unfit to rule. In the case of Cleopatra's visual rhetoric, the emphasis shifts in different periods, as Cleopatra adapted her rhetorical strategy to her personal circumstances and her intended audience, at times emphasizing certain masculine elements and at other times focusing on feminine. The Roman authors, on the other hand, see Cleopatra's status in ruler as a usurpation of the masculine rule and therefore monstrous and unspeakable. In order to take the queen and fit her into a Roman world view, they make use of various types of women customary to Classical literature to confine her to a role appropriate”from their perspective"for a woman. In every case, however, gender is used to demonstrate Cleopatra's legitimacy, or perceived lack thereof.

Full text
Abstract:
The research presented in this thesis describes the synthesis and characterization of anionic metallabis(dicarbollide) derivatives and the posterior applications. The first section of the thesis is focused on the synthesis and characterization of methylated cobaltabis(dicarbollide) derivatives. The alkylation reaction has been successfully accomplished by cross-coupling reaction between the B-I vertex and Grignard reagent in the presence of [PdCl2(PPh3)2] as catalyst and CuI as cocatalyst. The redox potential determination and modulation of differently substituted metallacarboranes is a matter of interest in our group. So, an efficient synthetic pathway to obtain chlorinated metallabis(dicarbollide) derivatives has been successfully developed and the posterior study of electrochemical properties of the compounds has been accomplished. The E1/2 (MIII/MII, M=Co, Fe) for B-halogenated and B-methylated metallabis(dicarbollide) anions were experimentally determined by Cyclic Voltammetry indicating that each halogen atom (Cl or I) produces an opposite and larger effect than each alkyl moiety. Based on their E1/2 potential, selected compounds have been tested as electrolytes in the DSSC devices. An important achievement reported in this thesis was the isolation of different calcium, silver and iron salts of cobaltabis(dicarbollide) [3]- and its iodinated derivatives. The possible application of such highly iodinated anionic molecules as radiopaque contrast agent for X-ray diagnosting imaging, required the synthesis and characterization of Ca[I4-3]2 and Ca[I8-3]2. Silver set of cobaltabis(dicarbollide) derivatives have been used as precursor to prepare the corresponding Fe(II) and Fe(III) salts that can form magnetic nanoparticles. The ability of single metallacarboranes to self-assembly and aggregate in aqueous solutions has been demonstrated in the last few years. More recently, it has been proven that minor changes in the molecular structure of [3]- provoke major modifications in the solution behavior. The substitution of two B-H by two B-I in the structure of [3]- leads to a lamellae lyotropic phase at high concentration, while vesicles are formed at small concentration (1-9mM). We prepared, isolated and characterized a set of different salts of the parent cobaltabis(dicarbollide) and some of its derivatives and we studied by 1H{11B}-NMR and 11B{1H}-NMR in D2O their behavior at different concentrations. Another important goal was the ring opening reaction of the zwitterionic metallabis(dicarbollide) derivatives with biomolecules, such as vitamins, fatty acids and sugars via a nucleophilic reaction. The iodination reaction of this biomolecules with natural I2 was successfully performed in good yields. We have designed new bio-functional metallabis(dicarbollide) derivatives which contain two different reactive sites: a suitable iodinated moiety ready to be radiolabeled and a PEG branch that can carry the vector. Injectable solutions of chemically and radiochemically pure compounds have been obtained after the radiolabelling reactions with either 125I or 124I via palladium catalyzed isotopic exchange reaction. In vivo Positron Emission Tomography (PET) biodistribution studies were performed on healthy mice and also in tumor model.

Abstract:This research was developed in the Rural Settlement Horto Vergel, located between the municipalities of Mogi Mirim and Itapira - State of São Paulo and was to study the 90 families who live in the settlement. The main objective was to identify the obstacles and opportunities that families of the settlement Horto Vergel face, in order to achieve food security, that being- the right of regular and permanent access to quality foods, in sufficient quantity, without compromising access to other essential needs, based on promoting health food practices that respect cultural diversity and such as environmental diversity, cultural, economic and social sustainability. To achieve this objective, the main tool that was used for data collection was the questionnaire "(In) Food Security for groups of farmers in Brazil", tested and validated for Brazil's reality and that contains the methodology of the German Scale Brazil's Food Insecurity (EBIA), socio-demographic indicators, family income, education, work and health, among others. The EBIA is a method that consists of formulating 15 questions to a person in the family with the purpose of capturing, through the responses, the different dimensions of (In) Food Security of your home, classifying them into four categories: food security ( SA), Food Insecurity Light (IL), Moderate Food Insecurity (IM), and insecurity Food Record (IG). Finally, it was concluded that the settlement Horto Vergel food insecurity prevails in 65,5% of households, and the main barriers that limit their achievement of food security are: poverty, the high number of members per family, health problems, poor, education and agricultural income below the national average. Their greatest potential are: diversified agricultural production, processing initiatives for the production, circulation of nonagricultural activities, among others.

The agriculture modernization and industrial growth coupled with the implementation of public policies has led to a major exodus from the country, notably between the 60 s and 80 s when around 13 million people have fled the field and headed towards the urban centers. This equates to 33% of rural population in the early 60's. The rural settlements emerge as an opportunity to return to work the land, and in addition to that, the application of agroecological principles emerges as a great option to conventional agriculture. The objective of this research was to analyze the association of agroecology women of Vergel (AMA Vergel) during a process of agroecological transition, rescuing the life history of the group members and the history of the group emergence as well. The possibilities and limitations that exist within the group were analyzed from the perspective of solidary economy. We studied the ownership and involvement of research actors on learning concepts in agroecology. There was a strengthening of group work which enhances the autonomy and recognition of that, and moreover, the self-esteem of female members of the group is higher, despite facing opposition inside and outside the family. The performance of various institutions working with the group resulted in a large accumulation of information, but as they are not attuned to each other and had different temporal perspective from the group, they did not achieve the expected success. In recent years the group has expanded their contacts with other agroecology realities. An example of good association of agroecological knowledge, related to agricultural practices and life in society, could be seen on small farm Nova Vida . Women who join to work in group look for strength to face the adversities and an opportunity to improve the quality of their lives and of their families.

Abstract:
In Servius' commentary, there are two elusive statements concerning the ending of the Georgics. Both of these statements seem to imply that Vergil changed the ending of the Georgics and that the Orpheus epyllion as it now stands was a later edition to the poem. The question of whether or not Servius is correct in this assertion is a central question in Vergilian studies. By focusing on the reception of Orpheus prior to Vergil, the Roman Orpheus of Vergil's time, and Vergil's own use of the Orpheus figure, a potential answer emerges to the Servian question. In order to answer this question, the primary inquiry of this paper seeks to find from where Vergil received his Orpheus story. A comprehensive analysis of references to Orpheus in ancient literature leads to the conclusion that before the first-century B.C.E. the primary narrative of Orpheus is not one of failure. Rather, Orpheus appears to successfully retrieve his wife from the underworld. Orpheus does not appear as an important figure in Roman literature until the second half of the first-century when nearly at the same time as Vergil is writing the Georgics Orpheus' popularity explodes in Roman art and literature. Yet, Vergil does not seem to be the source of Orpheus' popularity in Rome, nor does Vergil seem to be inventing a new narrative in which Orpheus fails. The missing source for Vergil's Orpheus figure appears to belong to the first-century. Orpheus appears as a central figure in the Georgics, the Eclogues, the poems of Propertius, and the Culex. Each of these works is rife with references to the poetry of Cornelius Gallus. Given Gallus' prominence in first-century Roman poetry, his close association with Orpheus, the Servian claims of a laudes Galli in the fourth Georgic, and the rise of Orpheus' popularity in the second half of the first-century, Gallus seems a likely source for Vergil's Orpheus.

Abstract:
This work comprises both artistic expression and self-inquiry to tell the story of a Vice-Principal’s apprenticeship and his travels in the narrative landscape of public school. Using creative non-fiction methods, the lived experiences of a Vice-Principal are told through a collection of vignettes, adventures and mishaps that occur to the characters in and across the community arena of a typical Vancouver school called Kitsilano Elementary. Much of what is presented describes the struggle for meaning and professional development which the main character must experience to learn leadership. Angus Bruce, the apprenticing Vice-Principal undergoes training for leadership, taking guidance from a mentor, and attempts to avoid the perils and pitfalls that dot his landscape and challenge his authority and identity. In this narrative Angus shares his experiences, creative expression and practices of school administration, his personal angst and educational joy in caring for young people and the transformations that are experienced in gaining a professional knowledge required to be promoted to a Principalship. The narrative is written using creative non-fiction to portray a work of truthful representations in a fictionalized work of art. This arts-informed inquiry uses narrative structures, poetry, and a/r/tography to situate the self-study of administrative service and servant leader in a fictionalized work of art, while creatively portraying the researcher’s inner voices of unease, humility and gratitude.

Abstract:
This thesis is essentially consecrated to the intimism aspect of the work of Maupassant and Verga; it tries to show that a deeper and more mysterious language is linked with the inward and imaginary life of the spirit, and superimposed to the realism of certain narratives. It attempts to discover the signification of the images and of the poetical symbols of the text, through the comparative study of six short stories: une partie de campagne and Di la del mare, regret and la coda del diavolo, mMss Harriet and ii canarino del numero quindici. Desire is the clue which connects the fictitious universe of Maupassant and Verga; this word desire is not to be understood in a restrictive sense which should limit it to a carnal and shallow aspect. Vital energy from which love can born, or blocked force force which can lead to a mortal anguish, it raises questions which, thanks to the psychoanalysis pass by the darkest profundities of the conscience; so are laid down the great ethical, psychological and spiritual problems concerning the science of the human heart

Abstract:
This doctoral dissertation investigates poetic representations of Augustus as divine during the formative stages of the Roman imperial cult. The dissertation takes the form of a philological study of poetry, but the intersection between literature and material culture (such as coinage, art, and architecture) runs through the project. Methodologically, this thesis falls within the framework of new historicism – finding meaning for poetic images in their relation to the world outside the text; and the thesis seeks to make connections between poetic texts and political and religious history. This dissertation, in short, challenges the prevalent view of White (1993: 169- 70) and Gradel (2002: 110) that poetry does not meaningfully engage with the development of the divine status of Augustus. I argue that the works of Vergil, Horace, and Propertius provide important insights into the way Octavian/Augustus fashioned divine images for himself, and that poetry elicits near-contemporary discussions of the prospect of Augustus’ deification. This dissertation does not purport to be a study of the textual sources for the cult of Augustus, but rather an attempt to reassert the full integration of poetry into political debate and cultural activity. In this reading, poetry itself becomes a cultural technology for, or a challenge to, deification. Chapters 1 and 2 focus on Octavian’s various divine personae during the civil war period through the lens of Vergil’s Eclogues and Georgics. Chapters 3 and 4 concentrate on Horace’s Odes 1-3 and Propertius 1-3, and argue that the poets in the early years of the Principate continued to conceptualise Augustus’ power in divine terms, even though the practice of depicting Augustus as divine came to a halt in official art. Chapters 5 and 6 study the dynamic between Aeneas, Apollo and Augustus in Vergil’s Aeneid and Horace’s Carmen Saeculare. Finally, Chapters 7 looks at book 4 of Propertius, examining in particular the elegist’s response to the connection between Apollo and Augustus in contemporary literature and elsewhere, as well as the poet’s anticipation of the formal deification of Augustus.

Abstract:
Our analysis concentrates on the narrative representation of places and landscapes in both versions of Giovanni Verga's Mastro-don Gesualdo (on 1888 and 1889) by adding to the traditional literary approach that of the stylistic studies and the textual typology. Runner of the principle historico-criticizes according to which one(which) the space is the key element in the relation between syntax, author's lexicon, themes and contained in the modern novel, we developed and analyzed a corpus containing hundred descriptive passages. We confronted first of all the textual solutions adopted by the author in both publishing(editions) of the novel, and we then tried to characterize, on the basis of these objective data, the dynamics of textualisation and of structuring of the spatial factors
