Abstract:
Abstract First records of invasive bivalve freshwater mollusc species Mytilopsis leucophaeata (Conrad, 1831) and Corbicula fluminalis (O. F. Müller, 1774) in Georgia are reported. No native or alien extant dreissenid species have ever been recorded form this region so far. A finding of C. fluminalis in Georgia is also a new record for the country though this species inhabits the rivers of adjacent Azerbaijan. Apart from two mentioned bivalve molluscs three non-indigenous gastropod species are registered from Georgia: freshwater Ferrisia californica (Rowell, 1863) and Physella acuta (Draparnaud, 1805) and land snail Eobania vermiculata (O. F. Müller, 1774).

Abstract:
Effect of habitat complexity on the distribution of Ceriodaphnia quadrangula (O. F. Müller, 1785) (Crustacea: Cladocera) in a deep lake The aim of the study was to compare the density, body size, and reproduction of the cladoceran, Ceriodaphnia quadrangula (O. F. Müller, 1785), in various habitats of Lake Piaseczno (38.8 m deep) in eastern Poland. Samples were taken in the littoral zone (from emergent and submerged vegetation, as well as from open water and the surface layer of water above submerged vegetation) and in the pelagic zone (from the epilimnion, metalimnion, and hypolimnion). The results show that C. quadrangula prefers the littoral zone, as it achieves there much higher values of the analysed variables than in the pelagic zone. The number and size of adults (including ovigerous females), as well as brood size achieved equally high values in emergent and submerged vegetation, and much lower values in the other habitats (including pelagic ones). Juveniles also preferred to stay in the littoral zone but displayed clear preferences to none of the habitats.

Abstract:
Because environmental conditions within a given basin are different for each season and at different water depth, knowledge of the life history and depth distribution of target species is important for environmental and palaeoenvironmental interpretations based on ostracod species assemblages and/or the geochemical compositions of their valves. In order to determine the distribution of species with depth as well as the life history of species from Lake Geneva, a one-year sampling campaign of living ostracods was conducted at five sites (2, 5, 13, 33 and 70 m water depth) on a monthly basis in the Petit-Lac (western basin of Lake Geneva, Switzerland). Based on the results, the different species can be classified into three groups. Littoral taxa are found at 2 and 5 m water depth and include, in decreasing numbers of individuals,Cypridopsis vidua(O. F. Müller, 1776),Pseudocandona compressa(Koch, 1838),Limnocythere inopinata(Baird, 1843),Herpetocypris reptans(Baird, 1835),Potamocypris smaragdina(Vávra, 1891),Potamocypris similis(G. W. Müller, 1912),Plesiocypridopsis newtoni(Brady & Robertson, 1870),Prionocypris zenkeri(Chyzer & Toth, 1858) andIlyocyprissp. Brady & Norman, 1889. Sublittoral species are found in a majority at 13 m water depth and to a lesser extend at 33 m water depth and include, in decreasing numbers of individuals,Fabaeformiscandona caudata(Kaufmann, 1900),Limnocytherina sanctipatricii,Candona candida(O. F. Müller, 1776) andIsocypris beauchampi(Paris, 1920). Profundal species are found equally at 13, 33 and 70 m water depth and includes, in decreasing numbers of individuals,Cytherissa lacustris(Sars, 1863),Candona neglectaSars, 1887 andCypria lacustrisLilljeborg, 1890. The occurrence ofLimnocytherina sanctipatricii(Brady & Robertson, 1869) is restricted from late winter to late spring when temperatures are low, whileC. vidua,L. inopinata,P. smaragdina,P. similis,P. newtoniandIlyocyprissp. occur predominantly from spring to early autumn when temperatures are high. Individuals ofC. neglecta,C. candida,F. caudata,P. compressa,C. lacustris,H. reptansandCp. lacustrisoccur throughout the year with juveniles and adults occurring during the same period (C. neglectaat 70 m,C. lacustrisat 13, 33 and 70 m, andH. reptansat 2, 5 and 13 m water depth) or with juveniles occurring during a different period of the year than adults (C. neglectaat 13 and 33 m andC. candida,F. caudataandP. compressaat their respective depth of occurrence). Among the environmental parameters investigated, an estimate of the relationship between ostracod autoecology and environmental parameters suggests that in the Petit-Lac: (i) water temperature and substrate characteristics are important factors controlling the distribution of species with depth, (ii) water temperature is also important for determining the timing of species development and, hence, its specific life history, and (iii) water oxygen and sedimentary organic matter content is less important compared to the other environmental parameter monitored.

Abstract:
Ceratium Schrank is a planktonic dinoflagellate ubiquitous in temperate and subtropical freshwater environments from Northern Hemisphere. Over the past two decades, Ceratium species have been recorded in South American water bodies, with expansive behavior and fast colonization. This study registered C. furcoides (Levander) Langhans and C. hirundinella (O. F. Müller) Dujardin for the first time in South Brazil. Ceratium furcoides was found in samples from States of Paraná and Rio Grande do Sul and C. hirundinella occurred only in the southernmost Brazil. No co-occurrence of these species was detected on samples. The morphological variation, as well as the dispersal patterns of these species in Brazilian environments, is discussed based on LM and SEM analyses.

Abstract:
Corbicula fluminea is recognised as being one of the worst alien species in Europe and one of the world's most widespread non-indigenous species in freshwater ecosystems. In Poland, it was detected in a heated water channel of the Lower Oder Power Station near Szczecin for the first time in 2003. In the following years, it continued its spread in the Oder River and the Vistula River. Our study uncovered new findings of C. fluminea in the Upper Oder River, which are its southernmost localities in the Oder River. Its record in the Gliwice Canal indicates that this may be a new dispersion route to the east for this species.

Full text
Abstract:
Coptoformica Müller, 1923 is a subgenus of Formica Linnaeus, 1758 that consists of c. a dozen species of ants that typically inhabit open grassy habitats and build small nest mounds. The most recent addition to the group is Formica fennica Seifert, 2000. The description was based on morphological characters, but the species status has not been confirmed by molecular methods. In this study, we use thirteen DNA microsatellite markers and a partial mitochondrial COI gene sequence to assess the species status of F. fennica, by comparing the genetic variation among samples identified as F. fennica and six other boreal Formica (Coptoformica) species. Most of the species studied form separate, discontinuous clusters in phylogenetic and spatial analyses with only little intraspecific genetic variation. However, both nuclear and mitochondrial markers fail to separate the species pair F. exsecta Nylander, 1846 and F. fennica despite established morphological differences. The genetic variation within the F. exsecta/fennica group is extensive, but reflects spatial rather than morphological differences. Finnish F. fennica populations studied so far should not be considered a separate species, but merely a morph of F. exsecta.

Abstract:
Desmarestia japonica H. Kawai, T. Hanyuda, D. G. Müller, E. C. Yang, A. F. Peters, & F.C. Küpper (2014: 161) was recently reported in Japan, Korea, and China. In this study, we found intraspecific morphogenetic variation in D. japonica. Morphologically, the new taxonomic entity was characterized by narrow filamentous primary and secondary branches (morphotype 2), which was distinct from the broad (ligulate) branches in the original description of D. japonica (morphotype 1). Korean individuals with morphotype 2 were clearly separated from D. japonica with morphotype 1 in the molecular phylogenetic tree using the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase 1 (cox1) gene. Therefore, we propose that this new taxonomic entity be established as Desmarestia japonica subsp. angustifolia subsp. nov. (Phaeophyceae, Desmarestiales) based on its morphological and molecular characteristics.

Abstract:
The efficiency of semisolid Rappaport medium, brilliant green agar, and bismuth sulfite agar was compared for the recovery of Salmonella from 104 naturally contaminated meat products that had been pre-enriched and subsequently enriched in Rappaport-Vassiliadis broth, Müller-Kauffmann tetrathionate broth, and selenite-F broth. The semisolid Rappaport incubated at 35°C was the most sensitive of the plating media (p<0.01), detecting 90.2% of the 41 samples that were positive with any medium. Incubation of this medium at 43°C increased the specificity to 100%, but clearly lowered sensitivity compared to incubation at 35°C. The best sensitivity-specificity ratio of all the plating media used was obtained with the semisolid Rappaport incubated at 35°C. Its use gave an increase of 36.6% in the number of positive samples, with it also having a bias toward the isolation of the enteritidis serotype of Salmonella.

The temperature, humidity and lighting conditions were maintained at a constant level (day 18°C, night 12°C, rh 80%, light:dark 12:12). Circadian activity observations were conducted outside the climatic chamber. Eggs — calcified, slightly oval, of mean dimensions 2.67x2.56 mm — were laid singly or in batches of 6–62, as a result of both biparental and uniparental reproduction. Incubation took 27–76 days and hatching was asynchronous. Hatching success was lower among eggs produced by single parents compared to eggs produced by two parents (c.a. 56 and c.a. 88%, respectively). Growth included fast (2.25 to 5 whorls) and slow (1.9–2.25 and >5 whorls) phases as well as lip formation, and took 261 to 420 days. The first eggs/batches were laid c.a. one year later, and for uniparentally reproducing snails the period was even longer. The growth of snails kept singly was faster than in those kept in groups. Juvenile snails were much more active than adults in the spring, summer and autumn but the adults were more mobile in the winter. In all seasons, juveniles were more active at night than adults.

Abstract:
The aim of this study is to solve taxonomic problems pertaining to Spio filicornis (O.F. Müller, 1776). The original description by O. F. Müller was very brief and type material was not deposited. Based on the literature the confusion about the identity of the species has been tremendous; e.g., it was only recently realized that at least two different species from the North and Baltic Seas could be identified as S. filicornis (Bick et al. 2010). The present study is based on material collected by the authors in 2009 at the type locality in Iluilârssuk, near Paamiut, SW Greenland. Spio filicornis is redescribed in detail and illustrated comprehensively. A neotype has been designated and deposited in the collection of Rostock University. Species formerly referred to as S. cf. filicornis from the North and Baltic Seas (Bick et al. 2010) are formally described as two new species, Spio arndti sp. nov., and S. symphyta sp. nov. The morphological diagnostic characters within Spio are discussed. Information on three molecular markers (16S rDNA, 18S rDNA, cytochrome c oxidase subunit I) is also provided. The genetic divergence between the three Spio species corroborates the taxonomic discrimination.

Abstract:
Sinanodonta woodiana (Lea) and Corbicula fluminea (O. F. Müller) are among the most invasive aquatic molluscs found in Europe. Both species were recorded in the Adriatic part of Croatia for the first time in 2019 although in the Danubian Croatia they were more common. An abundant population of S. woodiana was found in an oxbow of the Cetina River; mussels with shell length of ca. 12–17 cm dominated. A population of C. fluminea was recorded in the freshwater section of the Zrmanja River above the Jankovića Buk waterfall which forms the border between the brackish and the freshwater sections of the river. Possible pathways of their introduction and reasons for their rare occurrence in contrast to the Danubian Croatia are discussed.

Abstract:
In an area with the differentiated extend of revitalization liming (1986–2002), soil fauna (Elateridae, Staphylinidae, Diplura, Protura) determined through the method of tullgrens (2005) was confronted with the actual soil chemistry (pH, soil exchange sorption, the degree of the sorption complex saturation by basic cations, C/N ratio, available nutrients P, Mg, K and Ca). Athous subfuscus (O. F. Müller) and Dalopius marginatus (L.) accepted the broad extent of soil pH (2.8–6.15). The abundance of Elateridae and Protura was affected by soil chemistry and the content of nutrient elements while Staphylinidae and Diplura were without any response. Canonical analysis shows the complexity of applied factors whereas the environment showed a limited impact on the abundance of monitored fauna.

RADICK, GREGORY. "Morgan's canon, Garner's phonograph, and the evolutionary origins of language and reason." British Journal for the History of Science 33, no. 1 (March 2000): 3–23. http://dx.doi.org/10.1017/s0007087499003842.

Abstract:
‘Morgan's canon’ is a rule for making inferences from animal behaviour about animal minds, proposed in 1892 by the Bristol geologist and zoologist C. Lloyd Morgan, and celebrated for promoting scepticism about the reasoning powers of animals. Here I offer a new account of the origins and early career of the canon. Built into the canon, I argue, is the doctrine of the Oxford philologist F. Max Müller that animals, lacking language, necessarily lack reason. Restoring the Müllerian origins of the canon in turn illuminates a number of changes in Morgan's position between 1892 and 1894. I explain these changes as responses to the work of the American naturalist R. L. Garner. Where Morgan had a rule for interpreting experiments with animals, Garner had an instrument for doing them: the Edison cylinder phonograph. Using the phonograph, Garner claimed to provide experimental proof that animals indeed spoke and reasoned.
