Full textThe human pinworm, Enterobius vermicularis, is an intestinal parasite that is transmitted through close interpersonal contact. Because this parasite is human-specific, pinworm DNA can be used in population genetics studies as a proxy to track the migration patterns of human hosts. At least three genetic haplogroups of the mitochondrial cox1 gene have been identified in E. vermicularis pinworms extracted from modern fecal samples.
This parasite has also been identified morphologically and genetically in preserved fecal material, or coprolites, from numerous archaeological sites. Analyses of Ancestral Pueblo coprolites indicate that the inhabitants of the prehistoric American Southwest experienced particularly high levels of pinworm infection. The Ancestral Pueblo archaeological tradition represents ethnically distinct groups that shared certain cultural features. Prehistoric architecture, material culture, and skeletal remains, in addition to modern genetics and linguistics data, have been used to explore the level of direct contact between Ancestral Pueblo sites and surrounding areas. A comparison of pinworm genetic haplotypes from coprolites provides an additional means of assessing the migratory histories of the Greater American Southwest.
In this study, genetic fragments of the E. vermicularis mitochondrial cox1 gene were isolated from 14 of 43 Ancestral Pueblo coprolites sampled from Antelope House and Antelope Cave in Arizona, from Salmon Ruin in New Mexico, and from Turkey Pen Ruin in Utah. Attempts to amplify pinworm DNA from La Cueva de los Muertos Chiquitos in Durango, Mexico were unsuccessful. Five coprolites from Antelope House generated sufficient genetic coverage of a 268 nucleotide fragment of the cox1 gene for phylogenetic analyses. Comparison to modern genetic haplogroups indicates the presence of a unique haplotype of pinworm mitochondrial cox1 gene in the prehistoric New World, haplogroup D.

Full textThis study deals with machinability of compacted graphite iron. This material is in-between grey cast iron and nodular cast iron due to the graphite particle shape. It is used for manufacturing diesel engine blocks so as to increase performances and reduce carbon emissions to comply with Euro 5 norm. It is necessary to compare one material to a reference material to evalute machinability criterium. In our case, compacted graphite iron has been compared to grey cast iron. Tensile tests have given us mechanical properties of our test pieces batch used for machining tests. It helped us to qualify the material in its own material range. Inserts have been characterized by nanoindentation. PVD and CVD coatings were benchmarked in microscratch way to determine their respective adhesion to theirs substrates A design of experiment has been setted up so as to reduce number of inserts protypes to be manufactured. Pin on disk tribologic tests gave few hints to have a better understanding of friction phenomena and wear during compacted graphite iron machining

Full textThe compacted grapite iron is a suitable material for application on components subject to thermal shock and thermal variation. This material shows a good combination o f properties like thermal conductivity, strength and toughness. By this way, the availability o f information about the influence o f chemical composition over performance under thermal conditions, contributes to consolidate the use of this material in automotive components. In case of compacted graphite iron, the resistance to crack initiation due to thermal solicitation can be improved by the addition of alloying elements like: chromium, molybdenum, vanadium and others. Compacted graphite irons with different contents of molybdenum and silicon were investigatted in this work. The specimens in shape of thin disks (4mm) were submitted to three different thermal gradients, from 50 to 450, 500 and 550°C. Also, · the influence of the sharp edges left after machining of specimens was investigated. A procedure was developed for the thermal cyclic tests, consisting in warming one of the faces of the specimen with a heating flame while keeping the other (face) cooled by a water jet to a temperature of 50°C. The results show that the method devoloped for the execution of the test was efficient to evaluate the variables in question. The results indicate that the molybdenum improves thermal fatigue resistance. The maximum temperature of the test is decisive for life in thermal fatigue, and material tested on temperatures up to 450°C resisted twice more than the material tested on temperatures up to 550°C. Finaly, specimens wih smooth edges had a performance 1,5-2,6 times better than specimens with sharp edges.

Resumo: O ferro fundido vermicular, sigla inglesa CGI (Compacted Graphite Iron), devido às suas boas propriedades mecânicas, tem encontrado diversas aplicações na área automobilística. Uma das aplicações é a produção de blocos de motores diesel de alta potência, que devido ao aumento de resistência comparado com o ferro fundido cinzento, permite aumento de pressão no cilindro que induz a alta produção de potência. O resultado é a melhor queima do combustível que gera economia e, consequentemente, diminuição da emissão de poluentes, contribuindo com as exigências das leis ambientais. No entanto, boas propriedades dos materiais são conseguidas geralmente através de melhoramentos no processo de produção, como por exemplo, adição de elementos de liga. Assim, o objetivo deste trabalho é estudar a influência do teor de titânio, elemento químico que melhora a resistência ao desgaste do ferro fundido, no desempenho do processo de torneamento, com ferramentas de metal duro e cerâmicas, utilizando duas velocidades de corte. Os resultados mostram que a liga com maior teor de titânio gera menor vida das ferramentas e que as ferramentas cerâmicas não são viáveis para a usinagem do vermicular estudado. Attrition, abrasão e difusão foram os principais mecanismos de desgaste de ferramenta verificados neste trabalho.
Abstract: Due to its good mechanical properties, the compacted (vermicular) graphite iron (CGI) has found a lot of applications in the automobilistic field. One of the applications is the production of high power diesel engine blocks that, due to the higher strength compared to the usual gray cast iron, allows the increase of the pressure inside the cylinder and, consequently, production of high level of energy. The result is the better fuel burning what decreases the fuel consumption and the pollutants' emission levels. However, good materials properties are obtained generally through improvements in the process of the production, for example, addition of alloy elements. Thus, the goal of this work is to study the influence of the titanium content, chemical element which improves the wear resistance of the cast iron, in the turning operation performance, with carbides and ceramics tools, using two cutting speeds. The results show that the alloy with the highest titanium content generated the shortest tool life and that ceramics tools are not suitable for turning of the vermicular alloys studied. Attrition, abrasion and diffusion were the main tool wear mechanisms verified in this work.
