Full text
Abstract:
The emergence of Cantilever Neon Signage has accompanied with the grown-up of Hong Kong urban development after World War II. This enormous steel frame covered with bent neon lights has been erected onto the external wall over the streets of Hong Kong city in the past few decades. Its image has been firmly imprinted on every citizen’s memory by its multi-colored and eye-catching gesture. The signal itself embodies part of the social and urban development history of Hong Kong. However, its role in this city has been fading out following with the city’s renewal and advancement in information technology. It is afraid that the Cantilever Neon Signage will end up with a calamitous fate one day as all of them will be eradicated from our city. Throughout this dissertation, we tried to unveil some hidden stories behind this mysterious mask by unravelling the development history and exploring this fading industry in person throughout face-face site visits. The results were astonishing as less people would commit to this handicraft driven industry and it coupled with austere statutory controls which have inevitably halted further potential successors to enter into the industry.

Yam, Hiu Lan. "800mm luxury : pencil tower phenomenon in Hong Kong, China." Thesis, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/1721.1/72639.

Thesis (M. Arch.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, February 2012.

150m2 - 40m2 - 60m3. Pencil Towers are slender pencil-like apartment buildings. They are commonly found in high-dense Asian cities such as Hong Kong, Tokyo and Singapore. Focusing on Hong Kong as the context of research, this thesis explored the causes, implications and possibilities of invention in this phenomenon. Pencil Tower is a hyper-specific typology. Typically, the footprints of these buildings are exceptionally small that each floor of a Pencil Tower consists only of an apartment, an elevator lobby and a pair of scissor stairs. The usable floor area of such apartment ranges from 25m2 to 40m2. By means of negotiating with various building codes and economic realities, the act of building such slender apartments within any limited building plots in the city becomes very profitable for developers. The typology of Pencil Tower works well along with various external pressures (historical, economical and legal considerations) of the city. This thesis, therefore, understood Pencil Tower typology as a hyper-specific evolution of building type which is only feasible under these context-specific external pressures of Hong Kong. However, architects are rejected by Pencil Towers. The main concern is that the concept of luxury is non-architectural in Hong Kong. For instance, if an apartment is furnished with high-end bathroom and kitchen furniture, top-rated floor and wall finishing, and an extravagant lighting system, it is called luxury. In an extreme case, architects spend most of their time on choosing which brand of bathtub or what type of finishing to use. Therefore, the main design ambition of the thesis project is to promote an alternative understanding of "luxury living" in Pencil Tower. More importantly, this thesis tried to re-state architects' position in the construction industry of Hong Kong. Eight different apartment units were designed to demonstrate how 40m2 luxurious living environments could be architecturally generated. In terms of a design exercise, the key challenge was to maintain feasibility within the harsh limits.

Full text
Abstract:
Traditional Chinese architecture is one of the major historic building types in Hong Kong. Though the documentation on traditional Chinese building structure and form is extensive, the study on the decorative components is not as abundant. The deficiency is recognized particularly in timber components due to their high vulnerability to weather and fast deterioration under natural condition. Such situation is also observed in the design of traditional Chinese timber lattices in the partition doors and windows, which are regarded as unique artistic components in the traditional Chinese architecture. The objectives of the study are set to re-discover on the design, expression and associated cultural meanings of the traditional Chinese lattices in Hong Kong and its identity in the Lingnan context. Apart from being an artistic expression with high aesthetic value, the design of the lattice patterns and features are also recognized as symbolic means for the manifestation of collective and individual aspirations and beliefs of the people. They carry the hope for fortune, peace and longevity; and the influence of traditional Chinese thinking from Confucian and Taoist can also be traced. In the traditional Lingnan architecture, Hong Kong is closely related to its context, Guangzhou style. However variations in character of the local lattice design can still be found and the identity of Hong Kong is also to be sought. A field survey on the lattice design in the graded historic Chinese architecture in Hong Kong was carried out. As there is little research reference and the sampling is limited, the objective is set to establish a procedure for the collection of data for comparative analysis. By recording the results, finding out the characters and symbolic meanings, the associated intangible cultural significance can be established. The understanding of such intangible substances will be the essence for future conservation and the conserving of authenticity will rest on the inheritance of the intangible rather than the tangible form and material.

Abstract:
The Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry of the 21st century is undergoing significant changes to address issues such as economic integration, international partnering and globalization. These changes initiate challenges for the AEC industry in educating personnel to appropriately lead to the rapid changes. A needs-driven approach to mentoring recognizes the fact that employees in the workplace are required to engage in continuous learning to keep pace with changes taking place inside the organization. The foundation of this challenge focuses on how to facilitate learning organization and establish continuous human resource development throughout all levels of the organization. Organization has a great demand of transforming into learning organization. A quantitative research is adopted to achieve the following objectives: 1. To validate ‘learning organization’ concept in AEC industry in Hong Kong; 2. To explore the organization learning cultural profiles in AEC industry; 3. To evaluate implementation level of mentoring practice; 4. To determine the relationships among organization learning culture, mentoring practice and organizational commitment. A self-report questionnaire survey is designed and developed to collect individual employees’ perceptions of the variables about organization learning culture, mentoring practice and organizational commitment. The design of the questionnaire adopts three existing instruments based on solid theoretical foundations: Dimensions of Learning Organization Questionnaire (DLOQ), mentoring scale (MS) and organizational commitment scale (OCS), originally developed in western countries. The instruments are chosen to measure organization learning culture, mentoring practice and organizational commitment. Their contents are modified for the Hong Kong AEC context, and the formats of the three instruments are refined and merged into a single questionnaire. Exploratory factor analysis is used to assess the validity of the instruments in AEC industry in Hong Kong. Correlation analysis is used to examine the relationships among the variables. This empirical study, using western concepts and instruments, explores relationships among organization learning culture, mentoring practice and organizational commitment in Hong Kong AEC industry. The scope of this study is confined to young professionals working in Hong Kong AEC industry graduated from in local universities. The target group is set to have less than five years of working experiences. Despite the limitations of cultural nuances and narrowly geographically concentrated sampling, this study yields several important findings and contributes new knowledge in the literature. This study recognizes positive relations of organization learning culture, mentoring practice and organizational commitment in the AEC industry in Hong Kong. By confirming the applicability of the three instruments, this study also indicates that there is a high level of similarity between the HK AEC context and other contexts, e.g., Malaysia, Korea, Taiwan, and Mainland China. It also investigates the present status and differences among demographic groups in organization learning culture, organizational commitment and mentoring practice. The present study provides significant contribution to support the argument that young professionals working in organizations with a higher level of organization learning culture will have a higher level of appreciation in mentoring practice and organizational commitment. Therefore, the result would help managers and practitioners understand the impact of being a learning organization in AEC industry.

Chow, Chun-kit, and 周俊傑. "Performing trail : from mono-functional transportation system to multi-functional landscape infrastructure." Thesis, The University of Hong Kong (Pokfulam, Hong Kong), 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10722/207153.

Full text
Abstract:
The infrastructure is one of the key elements to construct and stabilize the sustainability of a nation or a city by providing a particular function and service to support the communities in a strictly fundamental way. The traditional structures and programs of infrastructure are always presented and constructed in a functional means lacking of relationship between natural and human system as well as cooperation with the social, ecological and aesthetic components while the engineering concerns has dominated the design and development of infrastructure. Additionally, those supporting programs are always required and occupied a huge amount of space. However, seems that the traditional approach for infrastructure could no longer fully cope with the new urban development, changing of public value and shifting of living pattern. The public and some of the professional has already formed a group and started the discussion of the lands where are lack of usage and development, especially the space under the bridge or space surround by the road system. In the contemporary world, especially in the situation of Hong Kong, the highway or road system requires and occupies a huge amount of space, which contains 665,640 vehicles on 2,090 kilometers of road fig.1that distributed by 442 on Hong Kong Island, 462 in Kowloon and 1,186 in New Territories together with 1,325 flyovers and bridges as well as 1,197 footbridges and subways. There are different site conditions and adjacent environments consisting of residential area, shipping port, recreational area and commercial area, etc. On one hand, the highway acts as a medium to connect people from place to place whilst at the same time providing efficiency and convenience to people by saving travelling time. However, it is also as a barrier in terms of separating the local communities due to the restricted area under and around the system. The result of disconnection of space has reduced the accessibility while minimized the opportunity of the integration for different groups of people. In addition to the existing typical road system in Hong Kong, it can be generally presented and constructed into four main parts, namely the above surface for sound proofing units and signage, on surface layer for traffic, below surface area for supporting structure and below ground space for foundation Fig.2. The usage of space is relatively mono-functional and limited in use while it is different from the multi-functional means of urban development, such as the complex residential and commercial area. As a matter of fact, the high density in Hong Kong needs a multifunctional and flexible approach to the built environment in order to provide a maximum usage of space. The multi-layering of programs of a site or architecture is the most common, productive and efficient approach for urban development while maximizing the usage of space. Bringing the economic and ecological value of landscape to the mono-functional transportation system might be an alternative to the new urban development in order to expand the possibility of land use and unrealized potential of space that integrated with ecosystem and contained with economical values.

Full text
Abstract:
In between the congested crowded urban layout of old districts in Hong Kong, it is not hard to discover one and another small left behind “gaps” in between the buildings. These lots, being left over, are either as land banking lots, or rented out for short-term tenancy. They, as being falling into the result of urban renewal, have an ultimate destiny of being redeveloped, but well before that, they are just leave there and wait for their other accompanies, in order to redevelop as a larger foot print. While the short 4 to 9 storey tall old Tong Lau had been redeveloped into 30-storey tall high-rise building, the capacity of affordable households had been raised significantly. Under the government policy of providing 1 m2 of open space per person, the growth of open space is obviously cannot catch up with the rapid redevelopment of old district. The urban land banked gaps, as a byproduct of the urban renewal process, are actually could be taken as a potential buffer to the imbalance development speed of urban redevelopment and open space. In connection to the temporary nature of the urban gaps, this thesis is aimed to focus on temporary landscape and to provide a sustainable strategy for coordination of different stakeholders, so as to utilize the gaps in a more valuable and sustainable way. Based on three main concerns: temporary, flexibility and sustainability, this thesis will test out how the strategy, in operational and design aspect, could work. An experimental case of Kowloon City district would be used as an example for testing the temporary landscape system.
