Abstract:
The rapid modernization and densification of Taipei has resulted in a culturally and socially unsustainable society. The North American paradigm of high-rise condominiums disrupts the social pattern of the vernacular family, cultural activities and communities, isolating the city dwellers within their own homes. The physical city no longer reflects or supports its social and cultural condition, thus has led to the disintegration of traditional customs and lifestyle without a sustainable replacement. The hypothesis of this thesis is that high-density residential architecture can be reinvented through the reinterpretation of vernacular dwelling to accommodate cultural sustainable activities and a sociable, identifiable community.

The first three chapters record and examine three branches of research: vernacular Taiwanese culture and architecture, high-density vernacular architecture, and the current condition of Taipei, Taiwan. The research deals with various disciplines, most importantly family and social structure, to provide a foundation for further discussion of dwelling condition versus culture. Chapter iv compares and analyzes the relationship between residential architecture and lifestyle of the vernacular and current dwelling. It argues for the importance of communities at different scales, bound together by a hierarchy of communal spaces. The condominium building is carefully reexamined under the categories of the unit, the floor, the building as a village, and the neighbourhood.

The design project, Vertical Vernacular [chapter v], presents a new typology of high-density residential architecture. It demonstrates the implantation of the theories and prototypes developed in the previous chapter, by consideration of current culture and family structure, including both traditional customs and modern lifestyle. A full range of unit plans are developed based on demographics, family structure, traditional custom, and adoption of tradition to modern imperatives. The co-operative living environment inspired by the vernacular dwelling creates friendly, strong and safe communities within the condominium. Furthermore, the project aims for the feasibility of the concept within the densest district of Taipei City from a developer's point-of-view.

Abstract:
I am interested in experiences and knowledge that is passed on from generation to generation, and in a broad sense this is the starting point of my thesis project.  I am of Kurdish descent, and I knew early on that I wanted to make a project that related to Kurdish tradition. I was specially intrigued by Kurdish weaving craft and how this particular tradition could be architecturally interpreted and used as a tectonic component. I wasn´t interested in simply reproducing traditional architecture, but rather using certain techniques and methods as a way of conceiving something new. Within my family, there is experience in weaving. With their knowledge, it has helped me technically but also with issues relating to the social and traditional. The study is based on developing design techniques of Kurdish weaving techniques and principles. My design technique has mostly been focused on the slit tapestry technique, more commonly known as kelim, where openings are created when two separately woven areas of weft meet along adjacent warps and do not interlock. Using this technique, there is room for spontaneity, which has allowed me to use the weave frame and warp to develop my design technique. In addition to weaving tradition, the project is also based on Kurdish vernacular architecture as well as Islamic architecture in terms of climatic and social aspects.
Jag är intresserad av erfarenheter och kunskap som förs vidare från generation till generation, och i en bred mening är detta utgångspunkten för mitt examensarbete. Jag är av kurdisk härkomst, och jag visste tidigt att jag ville göra ett projekt som relaterade till kurdisk tradition. Jag var speciellt fascinerad av kurdisk vävning och hantverk, och hur denna tradition kunde omtolkas arkitektoniskt och användas som en tektonisk komponent. Jag var inte intresserad av att helt enkelt reproducera traditionell arkitektur, utan snarare att använda vissa tekniker och metoder som ett sätt att skapa något nytt. Inom min familj, finns det erfarenhet av vävning. Med sin kunskap, har det hjälpt mig tekniskt men även med frågor som rör den sociala och traditionella. Studien bygger på att utveckla designtekniker and kurdisk vävtekniker och principer. Min designteknik har främst varit inriktad på slit tapestry tekniken, mer känd som kelim, där öppningar skapas när två separat vävda områden väft möts längs intilliggande varptrådar utan att låsas. Med denna teknik, finns det utrymme för spontanitet, vilket har tillåtit mig att använda väv ramen och varpen att utveckla min designteknik. Förutom vävning tradition, är projektet också baserat på den lokala successiva arkitekturen samt islamisk arkitektur när det gäller klimat-och sociala aspekter.

Abstract:
The Gujarat earthquake of 2001 caused widespread devastation to livelihoods and the built environment, demolishing or badly damaging in excess of 400,000 buildings in the Kutch region as well as killing upwards of 15,000 people. This research examines the work of Hunnarsh?l?, an urban development and architecture firm based in Bhuj, Gujarat, India who, in response to the immediate and long-term needs apparent in the aftermath of the earthquake, proposed an owner-driven redevelopment strategy which sought to promote the socio-cultural needs of the ‘users’ as embodied in the artefacts and processes of the vernacular traditions common to the communities, as essentially empowering and therefore critical to the long-term sustainability of any reconstruction work. Hunnarsh?l?’s approach is an illustration of the coproduction of housing, leading to what is termed here as ‘synthetic vernacular architecture’. The thesis explores the potential of the coproduction of housing as an alternative model for architectural development for disadvantaged individuals and groups, with the potential for broader application in other contexts. Using three settlements on which Hunnarsh?l? worked as case studies, this research examines the efficacy of such an approach through both artefacts and processes of production as found in the field through a qualitative methodological approach based on ethnographic and design analysis methods. The research indicates that whilst there are distinct and problematic issues raised by an approach such as that used by Hunnarsh?l? in the context of Kutch, their approach is an illustration of the coproduction of housing, Such an approach has not been investigated to any significant degree in terms of its potential as a means of making culturally resonant architecture and therefore as a strategy of empowerment. This it is felt is an oversight which this research seeks to remedy.

Cette thèse a pour point de départ le constat de l’émergence de revendications vernaculaires dans le champ urbain « alternatif » (Paquot, 2012 ; Béal & Rousseau, 2014) contemporain, en urbanisme, paysage, architecture et design. Des néologismes récents semblent empreints de tautologies et de paradoxes : on parle « d’urbanisme convivial » (Grünig, 2013), de « vernaculaire contemporain » ou de « nouveau vernaculaire »(Frey, 2010). Une première étude terminologique autour du vernaculaire dévoilera une étymologie fondamentalement dialectique et relative : ce mot savant désigne l’aspect populaire des choses – noms communs, pratiques ordinaires, savoirs non-doctes. Mais la géohistoire du vernaculaire révèle surtout sa subversivité latente, confirmant là sa place dans le champ des alternatives. C’est à partir des concepts de « travail fantôme » et de « genre vernaculaire » (Illich, 1983), que nous établirons que le terme est apparu lorsque la chose a disparu. Une dépossession (des savoirs, des techniques, des biens communs, des modes de faire) se lit au creux des révolutions industrielles (Giedion, 1980) et des mutations des pratiques de subsistance, désormais reléguées au champ des loisirs (Corbin, 2009). Le terme est donc intimement lié à un caractère revendicatif, de reprise, qui n’est pas sans écho avec un type de pratiques critiques en design : être contre, tout contre (Papanek, 1974). C’est alors par l’analyse de différents types de reprises récentes, posant les esquisses d’un paysage existentiel du vernaculaire (Jackson, 1984), que nous proposons l’idée de déprise d’œuvre, déployant les paradigmes d’un urbain soutenable. Dans un contexte de déprise urbaine qui la voit apparaître, la déprise d’œuvre répond à la maîtrise d’œuvre, par la quête du recouvrement des savoirs qu’aura révélé le vernaculaire : faire, laisser faire, faire faire. Nourrie d’improvisation, de processus et d’expérience (Zask, 2011), cette attitude affirme finalement le rôle de vecteur rhétorique et mobilisateur que joue le vernaculaire dans la réinvention de pratiques urbaines
This research starts from observations of the emergence of "vernacular claims" in the alternative urban fields (Paquot, 2012; Béal & Rousseau, 2014) : urbanism, landscape, architecture and design. Recent neologisms seem to be characterized by tautologies and paradoxes : "convivial urban design" (Grünig, 2013), "contemporary vernacular" or "new vernacular" (Frey, 2010). A first terminological study of the vernacular will reveal a fundamentally dialectical and relative etymology : this scholarly word refers to a popular aspect of things - common names, ordinary practices, non-doctoral knowledges. But the geohistory of the vernacular reveals mostly a latent subversiveness, confirming its place in an alternative field. From the concepts of "ghost work" and "vernacular gender" (Illich, 1983), we will establish that the term appeared when the things disappeared. A dispossession (of knowledge, of techniques, of common goods, of crafts) can be found in the depths of industrial revolutions (Giedion, 1980), and from subsistence practices mutations, relegated to leisure fields (Corbin, 2009). The term is thus intimately linked to a reclaim feature, which is not far from a type of critical practices in design: to be close, very close (Papanek, 1974). By analyzing different types of recent recoveries, sketching in the edges of an existential vernacular landscape (Jackson, 1984), we finally suggest the idea of an déprise d’oeuvre, deploying some sustainable urban paradigms. In a context of urban shrinkage, this déprise d’oeuvre responds to traditionnal maîtrise d’oeuvre, in a quest to revover the knowledge revealed by the vernacular : to do, to let do, to make do. Nourished by improvisations, processes and experiences (Zask, 2011), this approach finally confirms the role that the vernacular plays as a mobilizing vector in the reinvention of urban practices

With the rapid progress of urbanization in China, a lot of villages face serious brain-drain. A serious problem of culture deterioration arises except in a few traditional villages. Most newly built rural homes are weak and unsafe due to a lack of professional support and building codes. Many large-scale rural reconstruction projects initiated by the government fail because of corruption and irresponsibility. The rural residents suffer from the lack of infrastructure and the quality of their homes. Presently, there are a few grassroots, activists, architects, architectural critics, media and NGOs working for the renovation of Chinese vernacular architecture and rural settlement. Their works include architectural writing, installation artworks and projects in rural areas. This paper is an attempt to propose sustainable approaches and alternative patterns to settle grounds for Chinese contemporary rural construction, regarding architecture, decorative arts, construction systems and user's organization for promotion, by investigating, analyzing and comparing theories and some represented samples of traditional villages, renovation projects and installation artworks from the standpoints of technology, sociology, politics, art, philosophy, history and sustainability.
Con el rápido progreso de la urbanización en China, muchas aldeas se enfrentan a una seria fuga de cerebros. Existe un grave problema de deterioro de la cultura, excepto en algunas aldeas tradicionales. La mayoría de los hogares rurales de nueva construcción son frágiles e inseguros debido a la falta de apoyo profesional y códigos de construcción. Muchos proyectos de reconstrucción rural a gran escala iniciados por el gobierno fracasan debido a la corrupción y a la irresponsabilidad. Los residentes rurales sufren de la falta de infraestructuras y la baja calidad de sus hogares. En la actualidad, hay unas pocas personas de base, activistas, arquitectos, críticos arquitectónicos, medios de comunicación y ONGs que trabajan para la renovación de la arquitectura vernácula china y los asentamientos rurales. Sus obras incluyen teoría y crítica arquitectónica, instalaciones artísticas y proyectos en zonas rurales. Este trabajo es un intento de proponer enfoques sostenibles y modelos alternativos para sentar las bases de la construcción rural contemporánea china, con respecto a la arquitectura, las artes decorativas, los sistemas constructivos y la organización de los usuarios para la promoción. Abstract:
This thesis investigates how and why Sichuan courtyard dwellings evolved to adapt to changing social and cultural conditions from the 18th to the 20th century. Located in south-western China, Sichuan courtyard dwelling share some similarities with those in other regions of China but have its unique characteristics. While much of the existing scholarship studies Sichuan vernacular architecture from a static perspective, this research examines the development of Sichuan vernacular architecture as a dynamic process of immigration, localization, and acculturation. The research is based on three in-depth case studies and fifteen auxiliary cases. Using research methods including archival research, interviewing, site observation, and spatial analysis, the thesis adopts a holistic research framework to examine architectural space, social relationships, everyday life and cultural meaning of selected examples. The thesis shows that Sichuan courtyard dwellings in the 18th century were not developed from local architectural forms, but imported from inland China along with the wave of immigration. With the process of localisation in the 19th century, the characteristics of Sichuan vernacular dwelling such as grey space, flexible layout, extended eave, and small sky-well came into being to adapt to the new natural and cultural environment. The study also found that the social relationships and everyday life of the Sichuan residents were driving forces for the creation of the interesting spaces. The study also shows that many Sichuan courtyard dwellings in the 20th century were the results of compromise and eclecticism: their domestic spaces were organized within the traditional spatial framework as a cultural inheritance, while their westernized facade revealed the process of acculturation. Through these findings, the thesis contributes an original perspective to the understanding of Sichuan vernacular architecture as an evolving process over time.

Tuti is an Island at the confluence of the Blue and the White Niles in Khartoum city, the capital of Sudan. The intention of this thesis is to design a bridge on the blue Nile which links the Contemporary world of Khartoum, the urban conurbation, to the Vernacular world of Tuti Island, the rural settlement. In addition, the project aims to provide a space that welcomes the bridge and to be a meeting plaza for both worlds. It is also intended to provide the Island with landmarks to be used as a point of reference. These landmarks from an integral part of the main theme running through the design from the edge of the Island to the center. This theme incorporates the essential design elements of the Islamic traditional house, which are the courtyard (the core of the house), scattered rooms which form the courtyard, and the wall that encloses the house. These landmarks are: the edge sit,representing the first landmark housing a threshold, a wall enclosing the courtyard, a market and a mosque which is the predominant building; a library, a plaza, the center plaza that accommodates a renovated buildings. The end result would be the linking the fast life of Khartoum to the quite and settled life of Tuti.

Abstract:
This research offers a systematic analysis of the physical features of residential Vernacular Architecture (VA) of Nafusa Mountain Region (NMR) in Libya, linking them to the governance system of heritage conservation in Libya and to the Responsible Institutions (RIs). Libya has experienced different historic stages, such as the Amazigh, Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Muslims, and Italian colonization. It is distinguished by a historic continuity, which has enriched its historic and architectural features. This study investigates and documents the main physical unique features of residential VA in NMR and related factors that influence Conservation Processes (CPs) within the current governance system delivered by the RIs. By clarifying the elements that make residential VA unique and by understanding current issues undermining its effective conservation, this study offers valuable and original insights for informing future conservation policies and for putting in place measures aimed at restoring, preserving, and maintaining this unique architectural and historical heritage. This research also produces new knowledge about VA of the NMR in Libya, a topic on which no studies have been available so far. By filling the gap in current knowledge, this study raises awareness about the value of the VA in the NMR and contributes to support the conservation of such a unique heritage. The research methodology for this study uses both qualitative and quantitative approaches (Mixed Methods). The researcher has selected and justified three examples of Vernacular Dwellings (VDs) in NMR and collected the data through observation, analysis of dwellings maps, photos, interviews and a questionnaire. Visual survey has been conducted by visiting relevant sites and systematically collecting visual evidence, such as photographic and technical survey including structures and technological spatial details. Spatial analysis methods have been adopted to uncover the rationale of the VA development and construction. Semi-structured interviews with relevant parties have been administered at senior, middle, and junior management level of the RIs and complemented with the review of archival documents and relevant government reports. Findings from the research outline the main challenges to VA in NMR that include a lack of appreciation and understanding of heritage among owners, scarcity of local materials and traditional building skills, lack of government support as well as insufficient documentation. All the findings were triangulated prior to the development of the initial recommendations and further decision-makers and expert validation was obtained to establish the final recommendations. Conclusions and recommendations on how to preserve residential VA in NMR context will assist policy makers in Libya, when setting strategic national plans for VA conservation, and will provide a useful point of reference for academics and researchers.

Architects in Turkey have made extensive reference to traditional Anatolian building styles in recent work. However, there has been little systematic study of how they have gone about the use of these references. This research analyses varied approaches of designers and their ways of interpreting the vernacular heritage in recent living environments. This research is not designed to investigate the architectural design process itself; the aim is rather to look for possible influences of the archetypes of vernacular and regional architecture in contemporary architecture in order to create a unique identity, using different design actions; imitation, bricolage, analogies, interpretation and mimesis. In order to search for the possible effect of the archetypes of vernacular environment on contemporary design practice, selected architects who have been active in the recent design of tourism buildings in Turkey have been selected. Seventeen case studies have been analysed and nine architects have been interviewed. Many regions in Turkey have been visited in order to have wider archive of Anatolian Historical and Vernacular archetypes. From each architect, several buildings have been chosen for observation and analysis. The data was collected in several different ways, which are: first, direct observation, visiting the sites for the relevant information such as photographs, sketches and scaled drawings; second, semi-structured interviews with the designer in order to catch their intentions in selected case studies. The current study is based on qualitative analysis using HyperResearch software on both materials gathered by observation and interview transcripts. The result of the collected data with selected research method showed that the Anatolian historical and vernacular archetypes are being used by the architects in their recent architectural practices via different level of referential interpretations. The research goes beyond simple subjective observations of the use of historical references; this has been achieved through the development of framework for the systematic classification and analysis of a range of reference types. This has been used both in the interpretation of visual material and in the analysis of documentary sources and interviews with architects. The intentions of each architect in case studies have been identified and a list of most frequently used historical elements have also been given. This thesis examines the emergence and evolution of the Vernacular Italianate style of domestic architecture in Britain. The style was introduced in the form of a series of three country houses by John Nash in the first decade of the nineteenth century. It subsequently evolved over the next five decades into a popular template for the modest suburban house, widely disseminated through the medium of the architectural pattern books. The thesis considers the intellectual sources and antecedents which led to the emergence of this style and influenced its characteristics, analyses Nash's particular vision, and explores how the style was able to make a successful transition from villa rustica to villa suburbana, responding to the social and economic pressures which were at play in the expanding towns of the Regency and early Victorian era. It is a style which has been the subject of limited academic study to date, and the extent and significance of its role as a model villa for the new suburb is a theme which has been central to this research. A case is put forward that the style proliferated for two principal reasons: its versatility and adaptability for houses of differing physical scale and location, and its informal charm, inexpensively achieved, which conferred an air of sophistication appropriate to contemporary social aspiration. Nevertheless, as its popularity and accessibility grew over time the intellectual and aesthetic basis which underlay its origins as a product of the Picturesque aesthetic tended to be misunderstood or overlooked entirely, and by the 1860s the style had become diluted, frequently reduced to a matter of exterior detailing, with little reference either to Picturesque composition or to relationship between house and landscape, in contradiction of the tenets of Picturesque architecture propounded in the late eighteenth century, and in complete antithesis to the approach of John Nash in his original and distinctive Italianate interpretation.

A sample of 41 vernacular houses from the Verloenvlei and Lange Vlei valleys in the Sandveld on the Cape West coast, have been subjected to a structuralist analysis of their form. As elements of human material culture these houses represent the physical objectification of invisible culture. They are the products of a culturally dictated mental process of design, and in their form reflect the successful mediation by their creators of a set of binary oppositions common to all human experience. The mental rules that guide this process of design, and therefore account for the physical form of the object, are called the artifactual competence. Because, as a product of this competence, an artifact has implicit within its form the set of rules that account for its being, it is theoretically possible, through an inductive analysis of artifactual form, to isolate this set of relational rules. The houses in the sample were all carefully recorded and then compared and contrasted. This resulted in the creation of a statement of architectural competence for Verlorenvlei vernacular architecture, based upon which an explanation of its function as an element of human material culture, and a participant in human social relations was attempted.

In economically advanced countries, fragments of the past are preserved, or new environments are created to match this past image. The reappropriation of old forms includes what can be called the neo-vernacular as a way to meet emotional demands, economic needs or as one mode of intellectual justification for architecture in our times. The origins of the present preservation society and regionalism in Greece began in the 30's and was strengthened in the 70's. The movement has been connected to the natural environment, the quality of the cities and the loss of national cultural identity. How the notion of vernacular enters to the neo-vernacular and how it affects the shape of the physical and ideological environment today, as well as which issues of the recent past have remained unchanged -in reference to the Greek environment- are things to be examined in the present thesis.

Abstract:
Can a hospital be more than a center for treatment? Can it initiate a sense of healing in the individual as well as the community? The hospital in its early form was a facility meant to house the sick in ancient Egyptian temples. Prayers, sacrifices and dream interpretations were used in the healing process as well as quintessential medical procedures such as opium for pain and stitching of wounds. Monasteries were later established to accommodate travelers, the indigent and the sick. Hospitals were constructed next to Religious institutions but also utilized house calls for the wealthy class. Monasteries were also organized in cloisters which were places of retreats from the mundane. The idea of hospitals today is to diagnose, treat and heal patients which has proven to be effective with most diseases being prevented and eradicated entirely from our day to day lives. However, these conditions aren't as similar in Malawi. The origin of the word hospital is derived from the Latin word "hospitalia" meaning a place of refuge for guests and strangers. The need for effectively functioning hospital in Malawi is apparent, but the need to create a hospital that heals and creates a sense of community and tranquility for both the guest and wondering traveler is paramount.

Individuals, who were predominantly untrained in architectural design and construction, created the vernacular architecture of American homesteads for their own use. The buildings homesteaders created varied in materials and architectural forms. The goal of this study is to test the hypothesis that the cultural backgrounds of homesteaders were significant in their homestead architectural decisions. Three homesteads in Cebolla Canyon, New Mexico, were selected for study, due to their unique architectural construction and close proximity, both geographically and temporally. Methods included historical and biographical research, homestead site documentation, dendroarchaeological research, and architectural analyses. The results of this study suggest that the cultural backgrounds of homesteaders were influential in architectural decisions, but were not necessarily the most influential factor. Intentions for staying in the canyon and interests in conveniently acquiring construction materials were also influential factors in architectural decisions in Cebolla Canyon homesteads.

The western guest ranch evolved out of an era when American literature, film, and radio romanticized the cowboy and his landscape as symbols of the frontier west. As with architectural style, landscape imagery was a powerful tool in conveying social trends. Research briefly details the evolution of the dude ranch and its development in southeastern Arizona. Specific area of study is the San Simon and Sulphur Springs Valley of present day Cochise County, Arizona. A brief history of the region's settlement is provided. The location, landscape, facilities, and entertainment of eight guest "dude" ranches in the study area is described. A detailed examination of Faraway Ranch is provided, including site plans, photographs, and inventory of existing vegetation. The vernacular landscape of the southeastern Arizona guest ranch is identified. Reasons for the appeal of a guest ranch and its landscape to patrons is described.

Abstract Varying in age from ninety-nine to two-hundred-twenty years old, the surviving historic buildings on Grand Isle reflect the patterns of lifestyle and ethnic heritage on the state?s only continuously occupied barrier island and define Louisiana Coastal Vernacular. These structures, and the stories of the people who continue to occupy them, provided the primary resources for this thesis. The proposed National Register Multiple Property Listing (MPL) comprises the only documented study in the United States of historic coastal vernacular structures endangered by climate change and wetland loss. The structures also potentially hold the keys to future coastal construction methods. Research for the MPL revealed techniques developed through trial and error that allowed buildings to survive category four hurricane winds and storm surges up to sixteen feet for over a hundred years. Once formally identified as Louisiana Coastal Vernacular, these structures may hold the keys to future coastal construction methods. Potential global applications in the face of rising seas and increasingly severe annual tropical events require further investigation of surviving historic structures and their environments. Future investigation and documentation may reveal substantial applications to new construction that reduce loss of life and property during coastal storm events. Over the past thirteen years, state and federal authorities, citizens, and industries have struggled with numerous issues related to life in Louisiana?s unique coastal environment. What, how, and where to build has constituted a major theme of these discussions and yet, no comprehensive documentation of structures that have survived centuries of this environment has been conducted to ascertain how they survived and whether that information may be applied to future coastal communities. The historic buildings on Grand Isle represent a unique facet of life in Louisiana as well as containing the potential groundwork for a better way of living with coastal areas around the world.

The broad aim of this thesis is to investigate whether the regulatory environment in an urban setting can be utilized to nurture appropriate urban forms. The word 'form' here includes both physical characteristics, and the use of the resultant urban artifacts and spaces by people. The thesis argues that appropriateness and 'good fit' in urban form can be best addressed through an understanding of the common denominator which organizes urban life, i.e. urban meaning perceived as a shared sensibility. In search of this elusive and somewhat nebulous sensibility, a redefinition of the word 'vernacular' has been broached and developed as the pivotal theoretical construct. Consequently, the conception of a contemporary urban vernacular has formed a daunting preoccupation, and this has been further expanded to include the delineation of urban 'types' which evolve, mature, and differentiate, influenced greatly by the processes of control and change. As Nelson Goodman notes,' ... knowing cannot be exclusively or even primarily a matter of determining what is true. Discovery often amounts to finding a fit.' He goes on to add that this fit is a result not of belief but of the advancement of understanding. This thesis will attempt to develop an understanding of peoples' relationship with their city environment, with the eventual object of enhancing the fit between urban vernacular 'types' and control mechanisms which regulate them. In almost any city, especially those of the third world, urban form is an outcome of processes, both within and outside of institutionalized regulatory mechanisms. This is, in turn, a result of the complex interplay of social, economic and political forces. It is beyond the scope of this thesis to address these issues comprehensively. Therefore the focus will be on developing an approach which relates urban vernacular types, to the issues of attitude and lifestyle, the mechanics of control, the articulation of roles and tasks within society, as they are expressed through the built form. I have tried to illustrate some of the arguments developed in the first part of this thesis through a case analysis of an urban vernacular type in Delhi, the capital of India. An initial foray has also been made to develop a method for field research in urban vernaculars. The hypothesis forwarded is that by understanding the nature of socio-politico-administrative control. i.e. - the formal regulatory framework, the informal processes and tacit conventions - and vernacular types (people and places), as well as the relationship between the two, it is possible to arrive at an effective orientation for regulation which could nurture appropriate urban forms that would be supportive crucibles for living.

The rondavel has become synonymous with the settlements of the black people of South Africa but has also become a characteristic building type of European (white) folk building in white vernacular architecture. Although this building type was never considered a typical building type on farmsteads and of farm architecture of the Boland, it has become such a common phenomenon that it can now be considered part of white vernacular architecture. The occurrence and distribution of the rondavel in the northern part of South Africa reflects its popularity over the last hundred years. The rondavel occurs in six configurations: (1) as single isolated cone on cylinder structure, (2) as a conglomerate of separate rondavels, (3) as several rondavels connected to each other with foyers and passages, (4) as an independent annex to a larger rectangular dwelling unit, (5) as an addition built onto an existing rectangular dwelling unit or (6) as a single dwelling unit with the characteristics of an elongated rondavel with two of its sides parallel to each other (lozenge shape). The use and function of these buildings also varied depending on the needs of the landowner, tenant, housewife or workers.

Considerou-se indispensável o uso de materiais naturais, como um dos elementos principais da arquitectura vernacular para o estudo das casas mais características da Cidade Velha, antes da introdução de cimento e os seus derivados: betão; bloco de cimento e ainda outros materiais compostos pré-fabricados. Depois de aplicados os questionários do Inquérito elaborado para tal, pôde confirmar-se que as reabilitações das arquiteturas vernaculares não têm correspondido às recomendações e objetivos da UNESCO/IPC/CMRGS. Foram observadas as características das casas vernaculares e as influências de novos materiais contemporâneos, que participam da transformação/destruição sistemática das habitações originais. After applying the Survey questionnaires prepared for this purpose, it was confirmed that the rehabilitations of the Cidade Velha’s vernacular architectures has not met the recommendations and objectives of UNESCO / IPC / CMRGS. The characteristics of the vernacular houses and the influences of new contemporary materials that participate in the systematic transformation / destruction of the original dwellings were observed. In the final considerations, an urban solution was shared through the CMRG, respecting the “Cidade Velha Urbanization Guidelines”, published on 04/04/2019.

The amaNdzundza are a South African abaNtu people. This thesis sets forth to determine the role of their world (in the Heideggerian sense) as it impacts on their Architecture. First the evolutionary process of the amaNdzundza architecture is established. An infinite series of memes (much like genes) that function both on an intra- and inter-cultural level govern this process. Next, the cultural interaction of the amaNdzundza over a period of half a millenium are mapped (and a space-time matrix drawn up: ch.3), as to find the sources of introduction on an intercultural level. Finally, the architecture of the amaNdzundza milieu, both of their settlements and of the cultures with which they shared their environment, is analyzed and a sample of memes identified, which best illustrate the meme-exchange and evolution. This is done in a structure comprising the analysis of selected religious spatial incentives, and some aspects and elements of the settlement, the dwelling and the mural. A summary is given of the memes involved in the amaNdzundza architecture, and their evolutionary dynamics and origins. The researcher thus concludes that, rather than a singular factor such as the patronage of apartheid, the cultural 'memes' in the amaNdebele ya amaNdzundza milieu played the predominant role in the shaping of their existential, spatial and structural dwelling, through a process of 'loci meme' evolution.

What does historic preservation mean in a historic downtown with a long-standing immigrant population? With 90% of the business owners in the historic downtown identifying as Latino, Woodburn, Oregon presents the convergence of historic preservation advocates and Latino business owners. Some stakeholders view historic preservation as maintenance to preserve what exists, while some view preservation as restoring a building to its build date aesthetics. This thesis addresses what the field of preservation and the stakeholders in Woodburn value and how that causes conflicts when dealing with preservation efforts. The main method employed for study in this thesis was collection of qualitative data through interviewing historic preservation advocates, city officials, and Latino business representatives. By understanding Woodburn as an example of a “new” vernacular form, the analysis explores how the community of Woodburn can negotiate its regional dynamics to create a local distinctiveness, which includes a many-layered historical narrative.

Chinese vernacular dwellings are low-energy buildings constructed before the advent of modern external services. No work has been published that incorporates an exacting assessment of the environmental performance of these buildings. The principal aim of this research was to investigate the environmental performance of Chinese vernacular skywell dwellings quantitatively and to establish a model of rigorous and comprehensive qualitative and quantitative research in this area. This was done by analysis of on-site measurements and computer simulation of the environmental performance of eight vernacular skywell dwellings in three villages in south-eastern China - Xidi, Zhifeng and Yuyuan. Environmental performance and building form are examined in relation to current knowledge of the social and economic life of the villages in the past centuries, and to the environmental comfort and the activities of present-day residents of the eight dwellings and other vernacular houses in the villages. It has previously been noted that, in general, the courtyard/skywell of vernacular dwellings decreases in size with progression from northern China to southern China as the climate becomes warmer. However, the mean size of the skywells was found to differ considerably between the three climatically similar villages - large skywells were found in Yuyuan village, medium sized skywells in Xidi village and very small skywells in Zhifeng village. While physical factors were found to be important in determining house form; socioeconomic, cultural and security considerations were found to be strong influences as well. The investigation of the natural illumination of Chinese vernacular dwellings conducted in this study was the first quantitative study of the distribution of natural light in these houses. Houses in the three villages were found to differ in their distribution of illumination according to local skywell form. In all three villages residents were found to take various actions to pursue satisfactory daylighting. Two patterns of daylighting isolux contour in skywell dwellings were identified and analysed. The first comprehensive quantitative study of the thermal performance of Chinese vernacular skywell dwellings was conducted by on-site measurement and administration of questionnaires to residents. Residents of Xidi and Zhifeng were found to appreciate the coolness of their houses in summer, but residents of all three villages found their houses unacceptably cold in winter. The efforts made by residents to mitigate extremes of heat and cold appear to be important in ensuring their thermal comfort. Evidence was obtained that evaporative cooling had a substantial influence on the temperature in the skywells of dwellings in Xidi and Zhifeng villages. In addition to the buffering of temperature by thermal mass, evaporative cooling was found to further reduce the fluctuation in temperature inside the skywell and is likely to have been the main reason that the mean dry bulb temperatures inside the skywells in these villages were lower than the mean external dry bulb temperatures. It is proposed that evaporative cooling in skywells can be exploited even in humid conditions, because natural ventilation can ensure exchange of air between the exterior and the interior of the skywell. Summer temperature/humidity data obtained in the most used spaces of skywell dwellings in the three villages were plotted on psychrometric charts and were examined in relation to the boundaries of predicted thermal comfort zones. The acceptability of thermal conditions in the dwellings that was predicted using this approach was very much lower than that reported by residents. Residents appear to be more tolerant of high humidity with the presence of natural ventilation. Such air movement is desirable to improve the thermal comfort for house occupants in hot and humid conditions.
