Abstract:
The emergence of the new types of vernacular houses shows the evidence of change leaping fromthe popular image of the traditional Thai houses. The change is impacted from many factors includingcontemporary cultural needs. New vernaculars, which are found in the central Thailand, are the transformingThai houses and the reproduction Thai houses. These two occurrences began since the 1960s (forthe first type) and the 1990s (for the second type). The vernacular houses were surveyed in Pak Kranvillage and Bang Pahun area in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya province during the 2000s. These new vernacularhouses have developed from the traditional Thai house among other modern housing developments.However, there is lacking of awareness and understanding of the change. Most of the policies from Thaigovernment, study courses and research topics have focused only on the image in the past. Accordingly,contemporary vernaculars tend to be disregarded. For recalibrating the new vernaculars in this paper, thereare three main subjects: 1. the viewpoints on vernacular architectures both from local and internationalscholars; 2. the definitions and previous studies relating to vernaculars; and 3. the establishment of the newvernacular architectures, which closely relate to the traditional Thai house. This paper involves developingan understanding of vernaculars as well as providing ways to expand the scope of vernacular studies.

Abstract:
Kutai vernacular houses are proven to perform better than most modern houses in Tenggarong with respect to climatic change. Its adaptation is a continuing process including necessary changes as a response to social and environmental constraints. Unfortunately, Kutai vernacular houses are not far from becoming extinct due to maintenance issue, flood prone area, lack of awareness among the owner and less local government regulations. The research project aims to make conservation guideline of the Kutai vernacular house. The structure and construction of Kutai vernacular house is most frequently observed. We envisage that the research project will contribute the guidelines of conservation to any stakeholders. In conclusion, conservation guideline is based on available resources

Abstract:
This paper aims to define an adapted contemporary design language for housing built next to vernacular residential buildings of Anatolian villages. The case has been selected from Balıkesir province in the North-western part of Anatolia within a corpus of 104 houses from selected 81 villages of the region. Originally, vernacular house plans consist of allocation of rooms around a hall: sofa. Each room is a core living space with everyday living needs for a family. House is formed with various spatial relations between sofa and rooms around it. This relation is the determinative feature in formation of vernacular language for each Anatolian house. The study has three phases: analysis, adaptation and generation. The first phase analyzes the elements of vernacular by decomposing its language into sub-parts. In the second phase, the inadequacies of existing vernacular structures were exposed with methods of observation and questionnaires applied on users and new demands for living have been adapted with vernacular existing language grammar rules. In the last phase within the framework of adapted language rules for Balıkesir vernacular, numerous novel design alternatives were generated. This study claims to sustain the existing socio-cultural spatial configuration by adapting newly built contemporary houses to actual vernacular architecture in the planning context.

Abstract:
Abstract Climate-resilient buildings in Palestine can play an important role in a more sustainable residential building sector. This paper aims at evaluating the effects of adopting architectural design strategies and material technologies from vernacular architecture to create a new climate-resilient building. The paper targets single houses as these represent the majority of residential buildings in suburban and rural areas, and are similar to the vernacular architecture in size and functionality. The EDSL Tas simulation tool was used to assess the thermal performance and energy savings in the proposed model compared with traditional houses and modern typical houses, in two different climatic zones. The proposed climate-resilient house has materials and design strategies derived from vernacular architecture, in addition to the use of thermal insulation. The results show that the proposed house is more climate-resilient compared to modern houses. In cold winter and hot summer climates, the proposed model presents a total annual heating and cooling energy consumption of 59% less than typical modern houses, and 5% more than old buildings. In hot arid summer and warm winter climates, the proposed house presents a total annual heating and cooling energy consumption of 58% less than a modern typical house and 8% more than the traditional house.

In today's world, sustainability is gaining importance primarily in architecture; it should be possible to build it sustainably in the tropics. An example of this is the vernacular architecture, local materials and an adaptation to the environment, which enable the design of outstanding dwellings, which do not rely on technical tools. Unfortunately there is a great imbalance in Bali, and the local population is still strongly dependent on the building of the vernacular. The tourism industry has created its own high-tech architecture. Apart from a few exceptions, the luxury tourism industry nowadays has to deal with climatic factors instead of adapting them. Now I would like to research in a case study which aspects make the Balinese house so adapted and whether these aspects are still valid for today's claims. Basically, I asked myself these four questions: What are the characteristics of a contemporary tropical house in Bali? What aspects make these houses a tropical house without a negative impact on the Balinese vernacular architecture? What architectural means can help to create a local identity? Which architectural instrument makes it possible to integrate into Balinese urbanity? I would like to try to answer these questions using the case study of two examples and my gained knowledge. Abstract:
‘Bangla Baton’ house is a unique urban vernacular archetype that has historically evolved from the Assamese style houses and later modified by adapting to the local context of the Sylhet region. These types of houses bring out the rich urban history of Sylhet city and carry significant values of the socio-cultural, environmental, and architectural aspects of the region. Unfortunately, due to high land prices, rapid urbanization, and population growth, they are at high risk of destruction. This research is an interpretation to enhance motivation to make the local community understand the heritage values of this house type. The key objective of this research is to introduce this house form as an element of ‘Cultural Heritage’ by identifying and analyzing its values and assessing the sustainability factors in terms of the environmental and climatic issues of the region. Because of the lack of sufficient literature data, field survey-based observational data were used as the primary approach to identify the significant elements of ‘Cultural Heritage’ of ‘Bangla Baton’ house types. Criteria and indicator-based approach were adopted to assess heritage significances. This paper provides an insight into the urgency of initiating proper planning and conservation management to save this valuable heritage element from extinction. By identifying and analyzing ‘Cultural Heritage’ elements, this study will help generating guidelines for selecting the appropriate methodologies and tools for further assessment of the identified values of this unique heritage form as part of sustainable conservation management and planning.

The gulf dividing the houses of ruling elites from those in use among the bulk of a population (here referred to as vernacular) is a phenomenon common to many cultures. It reflects the close correlation between the kind of house in which an individual lives and his social status. A grasp of the relationship, between elite and vernacular houses in societies where both exist enhances our understanding of the development of domestic architecture, and our appreciation of the wider historical significance of that development. This paper explores an aspect of the relationship between elite and vernacular houses in seventeenth-century Japan.

Abstract:
Modern buildings are associated with a lot of shortcomings, such as consumption of an excessive amount of non-renewable energy and resources, environmental pollution and depletion of natural landscapes, etc. Vernacular buildings can be argued to help in reducing environmental problems for local society. Libya, as a developing Arab country, has also faced several urbanization problems in recent years. However, the country has a remarkable span of vernacular architecture patterns. Vernacular architecture that the country owns may be a solution to combat such challenges. There are three types of traditional vernacular dwellings in three regions of the country as underground housing (the mountain region), compact dwelling (the desert), and the courtyard house (coastal region). Thus the aim of this study is to make a comparison between underground and modern housing in Gharyan, Libya, with regards to thermal performance and humidity. Thermal performance in both underground and above ground houses was measured with an instrument called a hygrometer. The result from the thermal measurement that was done in one month of the winter season (21/01/2019-18/02/2019) demonstrates that the underground house has an indoor mean temperature and humidity of 16.12°C and % 62.07 RH while the other house type has an indoor temperature and humidity of 12.70°C and % 70.13 RH. The underground house seems to have a relatively reasonable and stable indoor temperature compared to the modern house indoor. In addition, the underground house seems to be relatively less humid compared to the modern house for indoor environment in particular.

House is one of human’s three primary needs. It is developed alongside human civilization. Minahasa as a part of that civilization developed vernacular architecture based on their culture’s unique values, meanings, and forms. This article is a part of research concerned in answering the questions of (1) how are the knowledge and technology used by Minahasan to build their vernacular house, (2) how are the shape and form of Minahasan vernacular house in Minahasa’s cultural development, and (3) what are the value and meaning of Minahasan vernacular house for its people. These three questions were being addressed in this research by using qualitative method with ethnographic approach, where every steps and results will be described by interpretation of several patterns from the values, meanings, and forms found in the research process. Ethnography was utilized to see phenomena in this research. The results are identification of values, meaning, and forms development in Minahasan vernacular house.

Ammatoa Kajang vernacular houses are buildings that have existed for a hundred years as residential house buildings. These traditional houses are unique in their use of bent piles. This research examines the strength of the structural system of Ammatoan vernacular houses based on said houses' ability to adapt to various environmental conditions and natural phenomena. This study seeks to enrich these studies by examining the specific structural strength of these buildings. In the face of modernization and extreme climate change, the continued existence of such traditional houses has been threatened. Disaster may strike at any time, and as such we must explore the structural strength of their structures to predict these buildings' ability to endure such events. This research applies an interpretative model to explore the structural system, using a load test to examine the houses' structural strength. Although such a model assumes that each building has the same pitch, each house has its own pitch. Therefore, the measurement results cannot be applied generally to describe the structural strength of every Ammatoan house. This research also notes that the pin joint system, material selection, and application of a grounded foundation are factors that promote these buildings' continued endurance and ability to withstand earthquakes.

Tuti is an Island at the confluence of the Blue and the White Niles in Khartoum city, the capital of Sudan. The intention of this thesis is to design a bridge on the blue Nile which links the Contemporary world of Khartoum, the urban conurbation, to the Vernacular world of Tuti Island, the rural settlement. In addition, the project aims to provide a space that welcomes the bridge and to be a meeting plaza for both worlds. It is also intended to provide the Island with landmarks to be used as a point of reference. These landmarks from an integral part of the main theme running through the design from the edge of the Island to the center. This theme incorporates the essential design elements of the Islamic traditional house, which are the courtyard (the core of the house), scattered rooms which form the courtyard, and the wall that encloses the house. These landmarks are: the edge sit,representing the first landmark housing a threshold, a wall enclosing the courtyard, a market and a mosque which is the predominant building; a library, a plaza, the center plaza that accommodates a renovated buildings. The end result would be the linking the fast life of Khartoum to the quite and settled life of Tuti.

Abstract:
Due to the processes of modernization, the existing traditional Thai houses have been changed from tradition to contemporary. Contemporary vernacular houses in the central Thailand are categorised as transforming and reproduction houses. This study focused on three types of vernacular houses in the central region: the traditional Thai house; the transforming Thai house; and the reproduction Thai house. This study examined the features in these contemporary vernacular houses which have been influenced by changing use of materials and construction methods. The study was conducted by examining the changes of vernacular houses in three locations in Ayutthaya province: the urban district village, the rural village and the motorway buffer area. Data were collected with the uses of materials, construction types, and features of construction elements. The data obtained were analyzed and discussed through typological analysis and constant comparative analysis to reveal the differences of vernacular houses among the studied locations. The findings show the ways in which vernacular traditions have been integrated with modern influences. The development and change of use of materials are indicated for reflecting the evolution of vernacular Thai houses. The results reveal that, from the earliest period of modern Thai industry, contemporary vernacular Thai housing has been influenced by materials available and construction methods employed. Industrial materials have been used to improve the performance and change the appearance of the traditional Thai houses. Because of the availability of early industrial materials and construction methods, the transforming Thai houses will therefore continue to be sustained by their current owners. Traditional and modern materials are applied to the reproduction Thai houses with updated construction techniques. Vernacular Thai houses are confirmed as a continuous process and appreciated in the context of the present. The results of this study offers some clues to support an understanding of living heritage, and thus promoting conservation of vernacular buildings in Thailand.

Abstract:
This thesis tests Amos Rapoport’s theory of ‘vernacular design as a model system’ through research by design, in order to develop and refine a model for contemporary design. The vernacular buildings in Wales are used as a foundation for the exploration. The research aim is to develop and demonstrate a design method by which buildings may be distinctive to place. A further aim is to develop a model that may be transferable to other geographical contexts. The research builds on Rapoport’s approach of ‘learning through analysis’ rather than literally reproducing the past, through abstracting and adapting principles from tradition for contemporary design. A model for design is developed and tested through a series of sequential and linked designs, based on traditional housing typologies relevant to current affordable housing need in Wales and elsewhere in the UK. Supported by literature, contextual and precedent studies they are used to inform, interrogate and refine the model. The primary objective of these investigations is to examine the applicability and appropriateness of a model for use by architects and designers. The research demonstrates that the vernacular as a model for design as proposed by Rapoport in its redefined form can offer an effective tool to guide design. It reveals that some aspects of the framework are strong such as siting, form, materials and construction, whereas others were found to be much weaker, such as cultural and experiential aspects of tradition. These elements are harder to uncover and are concerned with the subjective as opposed to the objective. The research establishes that these elements of the model are critical to the development of a design process that promotes connection to place.

The purpose of this thesis is to propose a methodology for documenting historic vernacular houses in Indiana through the Indiana Historic Sites and Structures Inventory. The inventory, or survey, is an essential and primary component of historic preservation. With roughly one half of Indiana's counties remaining to be surveyed, there is great opportunity to improve the quality and usefulness of the surveys as scholarship regarding the built environment advances.The thesis examines the definitions of vernacular architecture and sets forth a working definition which is fairly broad in scope. Vernacular house types found in Indiana are enumerated, described, and illustrated.The thesis then examines Indiana's methodology for documenting historic vernacular houses, and it makes recommendations, based on methodologies from other states, for positive charges.This thesis proposes an interdisciplinary approach to conductingsurveys of historic vernacular houses. It draws heavily from related fields such as folklore and material culture studies as well as from several years of experience working CX1 survey projects.The thesis also examines settlement patterns in Indiana and other cultural, building-shaping factors. The thesis is intended to serve as a guide to the vernacular house types in Indiana for use by field surveyors.

India is a country rich in religious beliefs, with a cultural landscape infused with symbolic meaning. The nation is currently experiencing great advances in development, standard of living, and connectedness to global markets and cultures. For remote communities, the spread of global ideas can significantly impact traditional customs and distinctive landscapes. Vernacular houses, meaning those particular to a region and culture, and built with local ingenuity, are vital contributors to sense of place and cultural identity. India’s remote mountainous regions in particular, are at a threshold of change in the vernacular landscape. Therefore, my dissertation focuses on Kinnaur district, of Himachal Pradesh, a remote folk region of the Indian Himalaya with a strong vernacular heritage and potential for great change in its cultural landscape. Because architecture is culturally significant and provides a clear medium in which to see changes in the landscape, the purpose of this research is (1) to determine the characteristic features of the Kinnauri vernacular house, (2) to identify the reasons for and process of vernacular landscape change, and (3) to illustrate the potential of decorative or small-scale features as significant components of place-making and enduring vernacular landscapes. My methods consisted of historical archives, landscape analysis (direct observation, photography, and drawings), and open-ended in-depth interviews with homeowners, builders, and officials. Through these methods, I distilled the characteristics of the Kinnauri vernacular house to eight distinguishing architectural features and determined the three most influential agents that directly impact landscape change and the vernacular house. My final conclusions recognize a paradox in landscape identity and that small-scale features are significant components in place-making. Furthermore, my research highlights the crucial role of ensembles and adaptability in enduring vernacular landscapes. Although homogenization of landscapes is evident across the globe, many places still exhibit individualized characteristics and cultural identity. I contend that the increased ability of small-scale architectural features to adapt to new settings, allows a modernizing landscape to preserve aspects of the vernacular architecture.

For this purpose, the studies that were carried out about the history, geographical/physical character, settlement pattern and socio-economic character of the region in general and the district of the study area were surveyed. To be able to take reliable results, a study area, which has a representative character, was defined. All registered houses in the study area were surveyed and building characteristics of Uzungö
l were identified. Beside gathering information, all surveyed buildings was documented in various details as structural scale and architectural scale. In order to examine the intervention character at houses in the district, all applied interventions at houses were documented. At the end of the documentation, specific intervention types were found. Values of the study area were listed and physical/architectural features that decided be preserved were identified.

Abstract:
This article presents part of the doctoral research carried out on raw earth constructions in the central zone of Chile between the 16th and 19th centuries, especifically in the so-called Chilean Colonial House, or Casa Patronal. The origin of this building typology is attributed to construction models and systems from Spain, such as the case of the Andalusian House, which was inserted in the construction culture of Chile since the foundation of the first cities of the country. Thus, the cities were continously evolving, firstly characterized by a large number of constructions of defense, but later after, diverse types of constructions were introduced, such as houses, churches and enclosure walls. Currently, more than fifty of these houses are preserved, which have resisted the historical seismic action recorded since the 16th Century, and whose last major event occurred on February 27, 2010, magnitude of 8.8 Mw, which revealed the precariousness and abandonment of the country's built heritage, especially of these types constructions. The methodology used for the study includes four stages. Firstly, the research and bibliographic review; secondly, field researches and collection of records in various Houses in the central zone of Chile; thirdly, the Systemic Method was applied in order to develop a diagnosis of the current situation of the case studies. This stage includes the application of the Chilean regulation for Constructions of Raw Earth NCh3332 of the year 2013. Finally, the fourth stage is focused on the analysis and discussion of the results, including conclusions regarding this matter. This document includes the progress of the study carried out up to the third stage of the doctoral research, which is the first part of the "Initial cycle of knowledge of buildings.” This study aimes to provide and expand the range of tools for the diagnosis of the current situation of buildings, based on the analyses performed in three cases studies.

Abstract:
The Amalfi Coast represents one of the most fascinating examples of Mediterranean landscape with a unique cultural and natural setting, resulting from its dramatic topography and the evolution of its community. The universal value of the coast, the evolutionary process of human adaptation to its production and exchange spaces, as well as its residential settlements, is very important to preserve. In this regard, the research is focused on the interpretation of these places, and in particular on the typical medieval houses to find the main features through the representation of ancient and new designers. The observation through the drawing allows rediscovering the essential elements that distinguish and at the same time link the buildings with the Mediterranean tradition. The geographical and economic characteristics that particularized the Amalfi Coast in medieval times and the absence of terrestrial connections inevitably led to isolation towards the hinterland and an opening by sea. The owners of these artifacts were mainly merchants and, coming into contact with different cultures, brought to their territories a miscellany of traditions. Similar, these houses are made of local stone and are characterized by their vaulted roof extrados that, depending on the type, leads back to a specific historical phase. The study and analysis of the drawings over time, therefore, aims to discover the main characteristic and rediscover the historical, aesthetic, and artistic value of the vernacular architecture of Campania. These buildings have always been a source of inspiration for great artists and architects who, following the Grand Tour along the coast, have characterized their works, and therefore represent an important heritage to be known, protected, and enhanced to safeguard harmony and splendor of the Amalfi Coast.

Up until the 13th century, the South-western Iberian Peninsula shared the same cultural and political conditions under the rule of garb-Al-Andaluz. The administrative separation of this territory between two different kingdoms led to deep changes in the culture and daily life on either side of the border, which may have reflected on housing structures. Did the 13th-century border between Spain and Portugal trigger divergent paths in housing types? Or has the previous common background prevailed in shaping house models in the territory around the Guadiana Valley? This paper proposes a set of themes to begin a cross-border study on the traditional house, its changes and continuities. The research is based on in loco architectonic surveys of common houses in the Algarve, Alentejo (Portugal) and Andalusia (Spain). The buildings are analysed as regard their spatial organizations, constructive techniques and urban implantation allowing some themes of change and continuity to emerge. This then allows comparisons between the types of traditional houses in these border regions, their common characteristics, differences and evolution paths. It is noticeable that, given how the South-western Iberia represents the same territorial unit in terms of climate and orography, and – until the 13th century – shared the same historical context, the urban similarities were profound. It is therefore almost surprising how divergent the housing evolution between the two sides would become. The study of housing architecture is of particular relevance to the history of people as the variations reflect how the habits and customs of societies. Especially in societies sharing the same starting point, it shows how habits and customs may diverge after separation into two different administrative entities.

Abstract:
Flex House is a flexible, modular, pre-fabricated zero energy building that can be mass produced and adapted easily to a variety of site conditions and plan configurations. The key factor shaping the design is central Florida’s hot humid climate and intense solar radiation. Flex house combines the wisdom of vernacular Florida houses with state of the art Zero Energy House technologies (ZEH.) A combined system of photovoltaic panels and solar thermal concentrating panels take advantage of the region’s abundant insolation in providing clean renewable energy for the house. Conservation is achieved with state of the art mechanical systems and innovative liquid desiccant dehumidification technology along with highly efficient lighting and appliances. The hybrid nature of the Flex house allows for both an open and closed system to take advantage of the seasonal temperature variation. Central Florida buildings can conserve energy by allowing natural ventilation to take advantage of passive cooling in the mild months of the year and use a closed system to utilize mechanical cooling when temperatures are too high for passive cooling strategies. The building envelope works equally well throughout the year combining an optimum level of insulation, resistance to air infiltration, transparency for daylight, and flexibility that allows for opening and closing of the house. Flex House is designed with a strong connection between interior spaces and the outdoors with carefully placed fenestration and a movable wall system which enables the house to transform in response to the temperature variations throughout the year. The house also addresses the massive heat gain that occurs through the roof, which can generate temperatures in excess of 140 degrees. Flex House incorporates a parasol-like outer structure that shades the roof, walls and courtyard minimizing heat gain through the building envelope. To be implemented on a large scale, ZEH must be affordable for people earning a moderate income. Site built construction is time consuming and wasteful and results in higher costs. Building homes in a controlled environment can reduce material waste, and construction costs while increasing efficiency. Pre-fabricating Flex House minimizes preparation time, waste and safety concerns and maximizes economy, quality control, efficiency and safety during the construction process. This paper is an account of the design and construction of Flex House, a ZEH for central Florida’s hot humid climate.

Abstract:
Thanks to an innovative territorial plan, drafted with the coordination of Roberto Pane and Luigi Piccinato and approved in 1987, many exceptional examples of vernacular architecture have been preserved in the Sorrento peninsula. Some of these, initially built as rural houses inserted in agricultural estates, have been transformed over the centuries by subsequent aggregation of volumes, into more complex structures, in which agricultural and residential usage have long coexisted. This is what happened to Villa Rossi, later known as Villa Murat, in the municipality of Massa Lubrense: an initial nucleus, dating back to the 17th century, was expanded during the following century, adding volumes and regularizing an initially spontaneous architecture. Despite such transformations, Villa Murat still retains some constructive features which are typical of vernacular architecture of the Sorrento and Amalfi coasts, such as extradosed vaults covered with beaten lapillus or the loggias facing the sea. The villa, which in the meantime had become property of the Rossi family, intertwined major historical events at the beginning of the 19th century, having become the headquarters of king Gioacchino Murat - hence its name - during the “Capture of Capri” against the British in 1808. Villa Murat, located in the quiet hamlet called Annunziata, away from the centres that have undergone major alterations, has still been preserved almost intact, even in the architectural surfaces, both the internal and external ones. For this reason a thorough research was possible, also thanks to an integrated survey with both aerial and terrestrial photogrammetry and laser scanning. The final aim, as the paper will show, is to develop a conservative design proposal, with targeted actions of conservation of architectural surfaces and structural consolidation, that will allow to keep the physical integrity of the villa and its authenticity without giving up a possible but compatible enhancement.

Abstract:
This paper explores the transformation of locality in relation to vernacular architecture on the former Greek island of Imbros (Gökçeada) in Turkey. The people of Imbros were forced to leave their homeland due to a state-initiated policy of Turkification that started in the early 1960s. The structural evolution of the traditional Imbriotic House came to a halt due to the forced immigration of the Imbrian people. Today, the material remains of houses in villages contribute to heritage capital, while allowing returnees a chance to critically reflect on their tangible heritage. The paper aims to understand changes in the built environment and its cultural and historical contexts and records the contemporary architectural applications of the social transition of a rural community in a global age. The study shows how traditional houses are ‘modernized’ by 2nd and 3rd generation returnees of the Imbrian community, in line with the changing needs of their inhabitants, and questions how the local identity is reproduced by the heritage community. By analysing the spatial modifications of the typologies and the construction adaptation of the buildings, the study examines which architectural components are kept and/or changed in order to preserve the “local identity” in everyday life on the island today. The paper compiles preliminary findings based on ethnographic field research conducted in 2018-2019, which yielded qualitative data from oral narratives and participatory observations, and also uses the data obtained from architectural research tools. Focusing on the reconstruction of old houses by returnees from the Imbrian community, this paper showcases the appropriation of vernacular architecture in a contested area in relation to locality.

Abstract:
The study of vernacular architecture allows to know a culture through its domestic constructions. It also permits learning from its values to apply them in new architecture. In order to achieve both objectives, it seems pertinent to gain an in-depth knowledge of the reality, something which involves questioning what this traditional habitat means for each member of the community. Gender, as a category of analysis, is applied in a research on the vernacular architecture of the Mossi culture and its transformation, as an initial approach to the study of the role which women have played in relation to this traditional habitat. This analysis was based on a literature review which was subsequently contrasted with data collected during two stays in the village of Baasneere (Burkina Faso) in 2018. The study, which considers the role women have played in the configuration, construction and use of dwellings, shows two opposing aspects of the house: its essence as a setting for tradition-based power relations and a flexible nature capable of easily accommodating change. Finally, the research raises the possibility of investigating how women's relationship with inhabiting and building the house varies with the modernisation of architecture.

The house, as a formal and functional type, also provides a basic container for culture and for meaning. Its form will not be altered casually, and when people do undertake to change their houses, those changes will undoubtedly signify other changes in their cultural and social world. Along the U.S./Mexico border, the unique political geography of the borderlands allows people to build their own housing on a broad scale - in other words, to build vernacular housing. This building takes place in colonias - outside the constraints of urban zoning and building codes - by a largely Latino and immigrant population.
