Kumble, Peter Andrew 1957. "The vernacular landscape of the southwestern guest ranch." Thesis, The University of Arizona, 1992. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/291844.

Full text
Abstract:
The western guest ranch evolved out of an era when American literature, film, and radio romanticized the cowboy and his landscape as symbols of the frontier west. As with architectural style, landscape imagery was a powerful tool in conveying social trends. Research briefly details the evolution of the dude ranch and its development in southeastern Arizona. Specific area of study is the San Simon and Sulphur Springs Valley of present day Cochise County, Arizona. A brief history of the region's settlement is provided. The location, landscape, facilities, and entertainment of eight guest "dude" ranches in the study area is described. A detailed examination of Faraway Ranch is provided, including site plans, photographs, and inventory of existing vegetation. The vernacular landscape of the southeastern Arizona guest ranch is identified. Reasons for the appeal of a guest ranch and its landscape to patrons is described.

Naude, M. "Erich Mayer's depiction of the vernacular hut and multiple hut building tradition." South African Journal of Art History, 2010. http://encore.tut.ac.za/iii/cpro/DigitalItemViewPage.external?sp=1000879.

Abstract:
Erich Mayer is not considered as one of South Africa's well-known and significant artists. Regardless of this, South Africa has inherited a few thousand drawings and watercolour paintings from Mayer that are of incalculable value to historians and cultural historians. His work has also not been "discovered" and exploited by architectural historians interested in South African vernacular architecture. Mayer visited various regions in South Africa and made drawings of the simple vernacular homesteads and other structures he saw on the farms and in the smaller villages and hamlets. Most of the buildings have now probably disappeared and the drawings are the only evidence of building types that otherwise could only have survived through oral traditions and legends. The buildings vary from beehive structures covered with grass mats in the N orth West, "kapsteil" dwellings in N amaqualand, to Bushveld dwellings with gables and thatched roofs. Mayer also made a contribution to the recording ofthe crude shelters the prisoners of war erected in the prisoner of war camp on St Helena, where he was sent as prisoner of war during the Anglo-Boer War (1899- 1902). Even though these structures were not erected on South African soil, they reflected the ingenuity and resourcefulness of the Boers who were imprisoned.

Abstract:
This dissertation pretends to contribute to the comprehension of the morphological cultural components of the landscape, in particular to the case of the predominantly rural landscape unit of the Algarve´s Barrocal. Barrocal´s landscape is almost entirely a construction, designed in function of an agrarian economy, where the continuous action of man on poor soils and slopes tried to adapt, in a symbiosis between human activity and nature, the space to a Mediterranean type of agriculture that this territory supports. For the purpose, it mattered to study the vernacular edifications in the relationship with private ownership of land, the support of domestic and agricultural spaces, from which the following elements are analyzed: agricultural crops - for the forms and distance between trees; types of boundaries – earth banks, ditches, walls and hedges; and, finally, the typologies that constitute the circulation network.

India is a country rich in religious beliefs, with a cultural landscape infused with symbolic meaning. The nation is currently experiencing great advances in development, standard of living, and connectedness to global markets and cultures. For remote communities, the spread of global ideas can significantly impact traditional customs and distinctive landscapes. Vernacular houses, meaning those particular to a region and culture, and built with local ingenuity, are vital contributors to sense of place and cultural identity. India’s remote mountainous regions in particular, are at a threshold of change in the vernacular landscape. Therefore, my dissertation focuses on Kinnaur district, of Himachal Pradesh, a remote folk region of the Indian Himalaya with a strong vernacular heritage and potential for great change in its cultural landscape. Because architecture is culturally significant and provides a clear medium in which to see changes in the landscape, the purpose of this research is (1) to determine the characteristic features of the Kinnauri vernacular house, (2) to identify the reasons for and process of vernacular landscape change, and (3) to illustrate the potential of decorative or small-scale features as significant components of place-making and enduring vernacular landscapes. My methods consisted of historical archives, landscape analysis (direct observation, photography, and drawings), and open-ended in-depth interviews with homeowners, builders, and officials. Through these methods, I distilled the characteristics of the Kinnauri vernacular house to eight distinguishing architectural features and determined the three most influential agents that directly impact landscape change and the vernacular house. My final conclusions recognize a paradox in landscape identity and that small-scale features are significant components in place-making. Furthermore, my research highlights the crucial role of ensembles and adaptability in enduring vernacular landscapes. Although homogenization of landscapes is evident across the globe, many places still exhibit individualized characteristics and cultural identity. I contend that the increased ability of small-scale architectural features to adapt to new settings, allows a modernizing landscape to preserve aspects of the vernacular architecture.

Thomas, Guy. "An investigation of the regional expression of the vernacular architecture and cultural landscape in the Sandveld." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/20472.

Abstract:
Much of the work undertaken in the field of Vernacular Architecture on the West Coast of South Africa has focused on the Verlorenvlei settlement. The buildings of this small settlement have come to define the Vernacular Architecture of the Sandveld. The Sandveld, however, is a relatively poorly understood region in terms of historical research, particularly in the 19th century, but forms an important link between events in the Cape and events on the Northern Frontier in the late 18th and 19th Century. The purpose of this study is to explore, modify and expand the characteristics of Sandveld Vernacular Architecture and build on the empirical and theoretical work done at Verlorenvlei and elsewhere through increasing the sample of buildings recorded. Additionally, the study seeks to pay attention to specific historical and biophysical contexts and considers the development of the vernacular landscape at three analytical scales, a broad, macro-scale, a midscale, and the detailed micro-scale. To do this I have drawn on multiple strands of evidence in both the documentary and archaeological record. These multiple strands of evidence contribute to an understanding of the Vernacular Architecture of the Sandveld that confronts variability that defies a singular definition of a Sandveld Vernacular.

Gaspar, Cláudia Alexandra de Oliveira Calado. "Arquitectura em terras ermas: cenários no litoral alentejano." Doctoral thesis, Universidade de Évora, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10174/21322.

Full text
Abstract:
A presente investigação incide na caracterização das estruturas arquitetónicas características do Alentejo litoral – os montes – procurando estabelecer relações da sua génese e forma com o território, numa perspectiva simultaneamente analítica e propositiva. O território é aqui entendido, não apenas de um modo restringido às características biofísicas e climáticas, mas também enquanto resultado de diversos processos de antropização que ocorrem ao longo da história, dando-se especial relevância à evolução do sistema agrário e à compartimentação da propriedade, que está na origem de muitos montes. Perante a problemática da desertificação e do abandono dos lugares e da arquitetura tradicional neste território do Alentejo litoral, procurar-se-á, refletir sobre a salvaguarda, conservação e regeneração do património construído, preservando a sua identidade, cultura, valor social; e fazer-se o reconhecimento dos elementos relevantes na arquitetura vernacular do monte alentejano, considerando as transformações da paisagem, as relações espaciais, a morfologia dos elementos construídos, os materiais e as técnicas construtivas. O objetivo será o de contribuir para o conhecimento do património rural agrícola construído, já considerado noutros estudos, mas comportando uma abordagem tipológica e morfológica restringida aqui a parte do Alentejo Litoral. Pretende-se propor uma análise crítica correspondente a um momento na história do sistema agrário e do património construído no território que visa entender as suas dinâmicas e respetivas influências na arquitetura vernacular, desde a sua génese até hoje. Considera-se também uma dimensão propositiva através da investigação em projecto, em que o pressuposto projectual decorre da leitura e interpretação do objecto. Coloca-se, por um lado, uma hipótese de leitura dos montes através de um corte morfológico que articula três sistemas no território (costa, serra e peneplanície), onde se identificam pontos (montes) e se reconhecem linhas (relações). Por outro lado é colocada a hipótese de um olhar para o território a partir dos montes, que constituíram e constituem elementos estruturantes na construção do território. Trata-se, em ambos os casos, de uma leitura morfológica para uma abordagem estratégica. Desta investigação em projeto resulta um momento propositivo que corresponderá à reflexão acerca da atuação no património rural, frágil e despovoado dos montes, procurando compreender como é que os montes podem ter um papel num território de produção. O que fazer com o legado dos montes? Mais do que soluções a partir de um programa específico, é desenvolvida uma abordagem sistemática e um horizonte de possibilidades, enunciado em seis linhas – Linha de litoral, linhas de água, linhas de festo, linhas de vento, linhas de velocidade e linhas de distribuição – resultantes da leitura que se faz do território a partir do monte, procurando obter uma visão estratégica para o território e para o legado dos montes. Ulteriormente é feita uma abordagem crítica às possibilidades avançadas, de modo a enquadrar três propostas concretas – um ensaio em pontos baixos, um ensaio em pontos altos e um ensaio em pontos médios – a partir do âmbito disciplinar da arquitetura e recorrendo à técnica da cenarização. As propostas são estruturadas e apresentadas com elementos gráficos e descritivos próprios na representação em arquitetura; Abstract: Architecture in a faraway (far) land. Projections onto the Alentejo southern coast This research focuses on a description of the characteristic architectural structures of the Alentejo littoral – os montes – and will use both analytic and proposal-based approaches to establish the link between them and the land. The land, in this context, is understand not only in terms of its climate and the natural environment but in regard to how it has been modified over time by human activity; in particular how changes in farming practices and the subdivision of properties led to the creation of many montes. In the light of desertification, and the abandonment of settlements and traditional architectural practices in coastal Alentejo, the aim is to consider: approaches to safeguarding the built heritage including conservation and regeneration; means of preserving the region’s identity, its culture and social value; the contribution of morphological elements of monte alentejano vernacular architecture to the transformation of the landscape; and the materials and techniques used in montes construction. The aim of this dissertation is to contribute to the knowledge of the rural, agricultural built heritage presented in previous studies by adopting an approach that focuses on the morphology and topology of montes specific to the Alentejo coast at the moment when they were coming into being. It will describe and critique the continued influence of agrarian practices and the built heritage on vernacular architecture to the present. It will also contain proposals for schemes prompted by the study and interpretation of the montes (‘research by design’). The montes may be read by analysing a cross section of the landscape in which they appear as points connected by lines (relations) dictated by the geography of the region: the coast, the hills and the coastal plain. Conversely, these landforms can be interpreted by examining the role of the montes in shaping them. A strategy based on both of these readings of the monte and their surroundings will be set out. This research leads to a practical study of the economic role the montes might have as part of the rural heritage that exists in the fragile and depopulated hills, prompting the question: What is the legacy of the montes? From solutions to specific problems the thesis proceeds to a systematic analysis of multiple lines drawn through the landscape – water lines, ridge lines, wind lines, velocity lines, distribution lines, and the coast line – in order to create a strategic vision for the land and a legacy for the montes based on this analytic approach. Three concrete proposals are then derived from a critical analysis of the options advanced, one each for montes located at low, medium and high points using architectural paradigms and visual projections. These proposal are structured, and accompanied by illustrations, common in architectural practice. {systematic approach for how to put together a proposal in this case}

ABSTRACT: The present work, consists in the elaboration of a project with the pur- pose of revitalizing the Casal do Rei village, located in the south of the Serra da Estrela Natural Park, at an average altitude of 380m. The project appears in the context in which the landscapes that cha- racterize Portuguese rural territory and what they symbolically contain, are threatened. Thus, the work moves around a reflection based on the concepts of landscape, the intervention of man in it, and the path. This, last, intrinsic to all aspects of the proposal, is assumed as a primary element with regard to the reactivation of the territory under study. In an ambition of exaltation and return to the land, this proposal is based on a programmatic solution that prioritizes the cultural and agricultural valorization of the place. This resulted in the conception of a path along the river that cuts the valleys that comprise Casal do Rei, as well as an agricultural cooperative.

Abstract:
This is a landscape study of the Spanish-American village of Chimayo, New Mexico where the vestige of a fascinating pre-modern folk landscape persists into the present. The landscape in Chimayo has undergone significant restructuring in the present century--from colonial agricultural landscape to modern suburban townscape--yet an image of the traditional rural landscape remains. The complex modern economic and social forces (e.g., automobiles, telecommunications, tourism) which, early in this century, supplanted Chimayo's colonial subsistence agricultural economy has also restructured its landscape. This project has revealed that artifacts, spaces, and place images can persist in a changing rural landscape. Moreover, in the evolution of the vernacular landscape of Chimayo, New Mexico, the pre-modern folk landscape has been partially conserved, both physically and in myth, and persists as an integral part of the contemporary landscape.

ABSTRACT: The work presented as part of the final requirements of the Master course aims to analyze the study of the transformations of the Alentejo landscape at various scales and the problem of vernacular architecture in relation to the “montes” of the Beja region. The starting point was a process of graphing 12 “montes” at a historical and typological level, complemented by theoretical research. Each “monte” is a unique case, in terms of complexity, size and even function, however, there are some typological similarities that result in a traditional Alentejo architecture. It is from the recognition of the problematic inherent to the region under study that a strategy of dynamization and intervention is presented later in order to revitalize these landmarks of the Alentejo landscape with a view to preserving and safeguarding the vernacular heritage. Preserving a memory of the past, it is demonstrated based on the current needs of the territory, the importance of traditional construction techniques and materials in communion with the surrounding landscape for a sustainable development of the region in cultural, economic, social and environmental.

The “faxinal” landscape is a complex system resulting from the interaction between nature and traditional rural communities that develop production practices joined to a system of knowledge and representation of landscapes. The actions, experimented practices in relationship between man and nature enable the individuals to formulating and improving knowledge, resulting from their close relationship with environment and each other, practicing, then, the territoriality in a continuous process of accumulation, elaboration and re-elaboration of knowledge. The present work aims to understand the ecological cognitive heritage setting about community planting lands in Faxinal Taquari dos Ribeiros in Rio Azul - Paraná, before and after the phenomenon of occupation of tobacco plantations in the market of Center South Region of Paraná. Starting from the set of geographical representations and from the practical systems is possible to make a inner reading of the cognitive systems from the perspective of the daily life of farmers of Faxinal. This approach leads to a comprehension of recovery schemes of territories, i.e., the collective actions in crystallized countryside. The productive practices of older farmers of Faxinal joined to their training in dealing with the land and the exchange of experience between them or their descendants have been helping to keep this praxis found in land planting of Faxinal Taquari dos Ribeiros, keeping alive the purpose in taking the sustenance from the land and keep the Faxinal alive by producing their cultivations and maintaining their vernacular knowledge in the landscape.

Abstract:
The Isle of Man is not part of the United Kingdom and its history does not match up with the histories of any of the adjacent isles, large or small. It has been ruled by Viking, Scots and English Kings and Lords and, although finally vested in the English Crown in 1765 (in the Act of Revestment), it retains its own government and administration and is politically independent of the United Kingdom except in matters of foreign affairs and defence. IN 1406 Henry IV gifted the island as a feudatory estate to Sir John Stanley of Knowsley, Lancashire, and his heirs and it remained theirs until 1765, becoming a Crown dependency in 1828 when the all the feudatory rights were finally extinguished. This period of over three hundred and fifty years, when the island was held by absentee landlords, set the scene for the emerging vernacular architecture. Isolation is implicit in the development and continuity of any particular vernacular architecture and this 'otherness' is particularly apparent on islands which have been large enough to sustain a distinctive vernacular, and appears to be most sharply rendered when insularity is reinforced by distance, language difference, and cultural separation of the rural population from an introduced administrative class. These criteria all apply in the Isle of Man, where there was also a unique pattern of land distribution and tenure that influenced the distribution of farms, and led to the absence of hamlets and farm clusters, and a lack of any good architectural precedent to act as stimulus or exemplars. The Stanleys rarely visited, stayed in their apartments in the castles when they did, and apart from the Bishop (a Stanley appointee) there were no other major landholders building manor houses, or high gentry building grand houses. These constraints have produced an austere vernacular architecture that is superficially similar, but in reality marked by difference, to that of the rest of the Atlantic zone of the British Isles where stone was a plentiful resource and timber a scarce one. Whilst differences arise in the details of construction, the greatest degree of difference is exhibited by the lack of significant variation in types and forms, there being markedly fewer types and variations than might be expected in a comparable area elsewhere. This can best be described as an absence of variation - in plan form, roof construction, wall decoration and elevational treatment; an absence or rarity of certain types and elements - hips, hall house types and central fireplaces; and limited technological development of certain details, especially joinery features such as dormers. The differences are particularly manifest in several characteristics, including: the raising to two storeys of even modest dwellings, and the consequent absence (with very rare exceptions) of the one-and-a-half storey dormered dwelling; the extensive and fastidious use of wheat straw ropes (suggane) secured to stone or brick pegs (bwhid suggane) set into the wall below the eaves, unlike the rather ad-hoc and very localised way in which this technique was used elsewhere in the region; the use of gables (rather than hips) and the treatment of the gable and eaves verges in response to severe weather conditions; and the extent to which quartz was and is used to decorate walls and gateposts. This paper describes the vernacular architecture and landscape of the Isle of Man, identifies the characteristics that make it unique, and discusses the causes of their evolution. In doing so, extensive use is made of new field work and archive material not previously publishe

Abstract:
The Masters thesis Amazonic landscape paintings and the construction of an imaginary popular culture, is an attempt to document and analize everyday paintings that represent the Amazon Forest and were produced in the 20th and 21st centuries for visual communication and decoration of interiors and façades of commercial and residential buildings, located in downtown Manaus, capital of Amazonas State, Brazil. It is possible to find various meanings in these paintings that shine amidst the visual polution and chaos of the city. Repeatedly evoking the repertoire of Amazonian imagery, they fuse local mythology with universal icons common to modern cities and tacky elements of the regional esthetic that dominates Northern Brazil. The amazonian landscape paintings - a term used by the painters themselves to describe their trade, how provoke us to reflect on the current production of popular graphic art in Brazil and more specifically, over how this form of pictorial expression survives and proliferates in Manaus.

This dissertation discusses some issues that accompany my artistic production since 2013, such as the recurrence of traditional constructive procedures and the proximity to body measurements, as well as vernacular measurement methods used in project design. This constructive thinking developed through in the visual arts practice has resulted in some impressions about the spatiality in Almeida Júnior’s paintings, mainly in the the regionalist phase works, where the painter depicts scenes from the interior of São Paulo. Thus, a reading of the images was made from the compositional elements of the landscape, the objects and the gestures of the characters, illustrating the arguments through data and recurrent characteristics in the rural daily life of caipiras and caiçaras communities. Thus, the study describes the spatial organization of these populations and the relations of man with his territory: physical, geographical and subjective, immaterial.

Abstract:
The creation of the space of inhabiting is in the Man’s origin, through his under- standing of the landscape, the Man was along the times adapting his space second their activities and specific needs. From the shelter to the contemporary house, new forms were being created and adapted, accompanying the human evolution, based on the new forms, activities and defined requirements in the personal accomplishment. In a time where the habitational requirements are more and more strict in the warranty of a comfort and standardized safety, we verified the existence of disparate ways of inhabiting. Together with the contemporary valorization of the human rights we can understand great part of the population doesn’t have the access to spaces truly adapted to their requirements of inhabiting. This way we try to notice the causes of the flaws in the execution of the fundamental human rights and of the inequalities in the habitational sector. Understanding the fundamental paper of the populations and of the construction sector in the creation of our inhabit and trying to explain the fundamental paper of the architecture in the qualification of the spaces of inhabiting, offering solutions and accessible practical forms to all of the inhabitants for the construction of a maintainable future, adapted and dignifying the human life

This study aims to understand the relationship between anglers and Pitangui River landscape, specifically on its upper part and its right bank tributary, i.e., Jotuva River. The study of vernacular fishing through geographic-ethnographic approach necessarily included the author’s participation as an observing-figure, which enabled him to establish bonds with the territory and go fishing along with the locals, being then able to understand the relationship between the anglers and the river landscape. The products of that relationship - synthesized vernacular fishing into geographical symbols - materialized in artifacts, technical itinerarie, architecture of ranches, camp sites and fishing', as well as the paths connecting fishing spots. Besides reporting the diversity of vernacular fishing practice, the study examines the knowledge body on generative fishing areas, as well as the classification system of local ichthyofauna. The study of geosymbol characterization and knowledge of vernacular fishing pointed to the peculiarity of this sociocultural practice which depends exclusively on rescuing the residents’ memory who have a close connection with the fishing territory, currently threatened by the National Park of Campos Gerais stablishment, as well as other socioeconomic processes that have striken those rural areas.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT: Throughout the world, we found testimonies of palafitic structures, both in river waters, in dams, lakes and sea. A peculiar way of inhabiting places, in which privileges of enormous relation with the landscape, that in the Portuguese case, reifies to the villages Avieiras of the Tagus and the Sado . During the winter months, harsh weather prevented the practice of fishing, causing long periods of deprivation and hunger among the fishing population of the Portuguese maritime coast. In this way the fishermen of Praia da Vieira de Leiria, a coastal zone of central Portugal, took their boats and went to find places where they could obtain sustenance for their families during the difficult winter months, which they found in calm and generous waters and banks of the Tagus and Sado rivers. Initially, in the Tagus, the “pioneer” Avieiros lived on the boats they built, using techniques from Praia da Vieira. Later, then, they settled down along the banks of the river , rising the palafíticas wa terfront villages. This results in a high typology on water, in some cases on land, which has been adapting from the Neolithic period to the present time. This construction proved to be an effective way to guarantee the subsistence of peoples, simultaneously, r elating to the surr ounding: the river and na ture. A heritage is a testimony of a culture, marked by its knowledge of the natural environment, through a memory that is bound in its own territory, in which the elements that constitute it go much beyond the palafitic house, include, the boat, the quays palafitics, the fishing gear and the gastronomy, complemented still by the r eligiosity, tha t as sumes the paper of festivities in certain times of the ye ar. The choice of the theme of this dissertation is essentially due to the need to highlight the value of Avieira Culture along the banks of the river Tagus, showing its importance as a constructive heritage, so that it does not go into oblivion. The proposal then emerges with the aim of re-establishing the link between the memory of the river and the banks of the Tagus, revealing to public much more than a way of construction, a community, a landscape, a poetics between land, water and air .

Abstract:
This thesis identifies the role of nature within Palaiologan entertainment literature. The texts on which this thesis focuses include a selection of the Palaiologan novels, namely the Achilleid, Velthandros and Chrysandza, Kallimachos and Chrysorroi and Livistros and Rodamni, as well as two other, more satirical works, The Synaxarion of the Honourable Donkey, and An Entertaining Tale of Quadrupeds. These texts seem to be different from earlier works in which nature is prominent, utilising such material in an innovative way. The study of these texts provides us with information both on the Byzantine view of the natural world and on the use of literature during a particularly troubled period of Byzantine history. My main questions therefore are how nature is portrayed in these texts and what can this tell us about the society that produced them. The study of these vernacular texts indicates that the natural world is given a prominent place in the literature of the period, using landscapes, plants and animals in diverse ways to express assorted ideas, or to stress particular aspects of the stories. The animals and landscapes provide hints of the plot to the audience, which the authors sometimes then subvert. The authors draw on earlier Greek material, but parallels with literature from other cultures show similarities which imply a shared medieval perspective on nature with local differences.

The Analysis of Composition of Cultural Landscape of Vernacular Settlement: The Case of “Wu-Lilin” Advisor: Dr. Chi-Jen, Chen Advisee: Chao-Ling, Huang National University of Kaohsiung Department of Creative Design and Architecture Abstract This paper discusses the composition of internal spatial culture of the vernacular settlement, with the aim to explore the ways for the harmonious coexistence of human and the environment, and man’s formation of the residential space corresponding to their objective environment. The study also focuses on the establishment of the cultural knowledge of the local community. Take vernacular settlement as an example, it not only emphasizes on the cultural knowledge extension of the local residents, it is also a space closely related to and adapts to its natural environment. It is therefore a representation of a human settlement space that can maintain a harmonious relationship with the natural environment. The study focuses on the following directions: through the retrospection of theoretical review and the collection of historical information, the study establishes its theoretical framework, the direction of the research topic, and the pictorial description of the basic space. Next, the study emphasizes on the spatial formation of vernacular settlement by exploring its development, and with that as a basis, to analyze the characteristics of landscape imagery of vernacular settlement. The last part of the study depicts the elements and features forming the cultural landscapes of vernacular settlement, with its characteristic environmental imagery as a basis. Therefore, this study will propose the important environmental images that affect vernacular settlement, mainly the cultural imagery that is constructed by “water.” It not only affects the residents’ living attitude, beliefs, settlement behaviors and other value facets, but also develops a local and unique spatial formation, residential architecture, alley patterns, spatial structure and other material facets. The field study area chosen is “Wulilin,” located in the Ciaotou District of Kaohsiung City, which consists of two administrative villages -- Donglin Village and Xilin Village. The study environment is situated in the midstream and southern bank of “Wulilin Lake” (now called “Dianbao Lake”), and is a typical traditional rural settlement developed next to lakes or rivers. “Wulilin Lake” is one that is easily flooded when rainstorm comes, especially the large bend the lake forms when it flows through, causes the settlement area serious flooding during rainstorms. Under such harsh living conditions, the local residents therefore developed a unique cultural character and residential behavior. For example, “post foot house,” a residential building developed to adapt to the harsh environmental conditions, is a typical form of vernacular architecture. Thus, in the evolving growth of the settlement, the interaction between nature and culture will reflect the harmonious man-land relationship in the settlement space. Abstract:
American undertakers first began relocating from downtown parlors to mansions in residential neighborhoods around the First World War, and by midcentury virtually every city and town possessed at least one funeral home in a remodeled dwelling. Using industry publications, newspapers, photographs, legal documents, and field work, this dissertation mines the funeral industry's shift from business district to residential district for insights into America's evolving residential landscape, the impact of consumer culture on the built environment, and the communicative power of objects. Chapters one and two describe the changing landscape of professional deathcare. Chapter three explores the funeral home's residential setting as the battleground where undertakers clashed with residents and civil authorities for the soul of America's declining nineteenth-century neighborhoods and debated the efficacy and legality of zoning. The funeral home itself became a site for debate within the industry over whether or not professionals could also be successful merchants. Chapters four and five demonstrate how an awareness of both the symbolic value of material culture and the larger consumer marketplace led enterprising undertakers to mansions as a tool to legitimate their claims to professional status and as a setting to stimulate demand for luxury goods, two objectives often at odds with one another. Chapter five also explores the funeral home as a barometer of rising pressures within retail culture, from its emphasis on merchandising and democratized luxury to the industry's early exodus from the downtown as a harbinger of the postwar decentralization of shopping to the suburbs. Amidst perennial concerns over rising burial costs and calls for greater simplicity, funeral directors created spaces that married simplicity to luxury, a paradox that became a hallmark of modern consumer culture. Notwithstanding their success as retail spaces, funeral homes struggled for acceptance as ritual spaces. Chapter six follows the industry's aggressive campaign to dislodge the home funeral using advertisements that showcased the funeral home's privacy and homelike comforts. In the end, a heightened emphasis within consumer culture on convenience and the funeral home's ability to balance sales and ceremony solidified its enduring and iconic place within the vernacular landscape.

In the past two decades, inevitable exploitation and globalization are the main threats for the existence of aboriginal culture. Thus how to conserve and reform the aboriginal culture has become a critical issue in Taiwan society. Recently, the movement of conserving and maintaining in aboriginal tribe’s and traditional architecture has gradually been noticed by public. However, few studies related to vernacular landscape of aboriginal tribe had been done. Therefore, this study tries to form a garden scheme that was considered in the standpoint of landscape and identified by aborigines.Comprehending from above, Seediq, the latest one named by official and belonged to minor in Taiwan aboriginal tribes, is the study subject in this research. For their specific cultural trait in coexisting with the terrain of slope has not been appropriately preserved, and their common tradition is vanishing with their fading elders, thereby to proceed related researches is in the great urgency. In the procedure of this research, the first step is to review related literatures and analyze some classical landscape architectural cases to construct the method for analyzing Seediq’s vernacular landscape and garden. Then, for obtaining Seediq’s garden symbolic elements and its background factors of formation, the research proceeds the on-site investigation and in-depth interview to collect related data. Afterward, the research analyzes the collected data in symbolic elements’ appearance features, arrangement, meaning and function, for forming the preliminary prototype of Seediq’s garden.
The vernacular heritage is recognized by its integration with cultural and geographic environments and therefore is also an expression of local identities (ICOMOS, 1999). The progressive abandonment of this built heritage in Portugal has contributed to an accelerated loss of memory, essential to place recognition and local cultures. With the awareness that nowadays architecture faces new challenges, particularly the need of integrated and inclusive answers to the sociocultural and environmental context, our aim is to stimulate the awareness of undocumented exemplars of vernacular architecture, significant sources of information for their experimental evolution throughout decades. This research focus on the study of the farms from the north-eastern region of Trás-os-Montes, characterized by their dispersion around the main urban settlements, which were their opportunity and the reason for existence, as they associated subsistence agriculture with local market supply. By their isolation from the established infrastructural networks, they represent a challenge to contemporary solutions aimed at self-sufficiency and sustainability, allowing for their continuity. Recognizing the impact of architectural design on ways of living and the environment this research aims is at stimulating strategic thinking that connects architecture, landscape and man, seeking alternative and innovative solutions for a more sustainable architecture (in a social, environmental and economic sense), through a critical reading of this architectural heritage, taking the identity and values of the community into account. With this purpose, new interventions should understand local potentialities, the validity of the identified processes and their weaknesses, searching for continuity but also for complementarity. By focusing the study in the primary sources a survey that will allow a new reinterpretation of this architecture closer to its significance is intended, understanding the purposes that lead to this building practices.

Abstract:
The Cultural Landscape Inventory is a comprehensive inventory of all historically significant landscapes within the National Park Service. This cultural landscape inventory documents the Johnson Settlement Area at the Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park in Johnson City, Texas. The Johnson Settlement Area served as the headquarters for former president Lyndon B. Johnson’s paternal grandparents, Samuel Ealy Johnson and Eliza Bunton’s, open-range cattle ranch from 1867 through 1872. After the collapse of the cattle ranching enterprise, the land was sold to James Polk Johnson and later converted into a small-scale farm by John Bruckner. From 1970 through 1972, Lyndon B. Johnson was involved with the planning, acquisition, and donation of a portion of the original settlement property to the National Park Service. In 1972, a major restoration and reconstruction project was completed as the property was converted into an historic interpretive landscape administered by the National Park Service. The Johnson Settlement Area is primarily an open pastoral landscape with reconstructed livestock corrals and a cluster of restored and reconstructed building and structures that collectively convey the ranching and frontier heritage of former president Lyndon B. Johnson. The cultural landscape inventory documents the physical development and historical significance of the Johnson Settlement Area. The inventory evaluates the landscape characteristics of the district and considers the integrity and overall condition of this historic vernacular landscape. Further, the inventory assesses eligibility for the National Register of Historic Places. The Johnson Settlement Area Cultural Landscape Inventory expands the 1990 National Register of Historic Places nomination in its period of significance, boundaries and acreage, and National Register Criteria.
