Abstract:
The verse <em>lâ ikrâh fî al-dîn</em> has been one of the most contested verses with regard to its meaning and definition by the ‘<em>ulama</em> (religious scholars) from the past to the present. Basing on this verse, progressive ‘<em>ulama</em> maintain that the idea of freedom of religion introduced by modern society does not contradict the Qur’ân. For them, freedom of religion includes not only freedom to convert to Islam, but also freedom to convert from Islam. This view is rejected by conservative ‘<em>ulama</em> who argue that the meaning of the verse contains only freedom to convert to Islam, not to convert from Islam. If non-Muslims are free to convert to Islam, Muslims are not allowed to convert from Islam. Moreover, there are many ‘<em>ulama</em> who argue that the verse has been abrogated by other tens of verses which enjoin to fight against infidels and polytheists. After the revelation of ‘verses of war’ in the Qur’ân, the verse <em>lâ ikrâh fî al-dîn</em> becomes no longer legally binding.

AbstractIn this paper, we study two generalizations of the Stirling numbers of the first and second kinds, inspired from their combinatorial interpretation in terms of 0-1 tableaux. They are the 𝔄-Stirling numbers and the partial Stirling numbers. In particular, we give a q and a p, q-analogue of convolution formulae for Stirling numbers of the second kind, due to Chen and Verde-Star, and we extend these formulae to Stirling numbers of the first kind. Included in this study are the a, d-progressive Stirlingnumbers, corresponding to 0-1 tableaux with column lengths from an arithmetic progression ﹛a + id﹜i≥0.

Abstract:
The loss-of-coolant accident (LOCA) simulation in the boiling water reactor (BWR) of Laguna Verde Nuclear Power Plant (LVNPP) at 105% of rated power is analyzed in this work. The LVNPP model was developed using RELAP/SCDAPSIM code. The lack of cooling water after the LOCA gets to the LVNPP to melting of the core that exceeds the design basis of the nuclear power plant (NPP) sufficiently to cause failure of structures, materials, and systems that are needed to ensure proper cooling of the reactor core by normal means. Faced with a severe accident, the first response is to maintain the reactor core cooling by any means available, but in order to carry out such an attempt is necessary to understand fully the progression of core damage, since such action has effects that may be decisive in accident progression. The simulation considers a LOCA in the recirculation loop of the reactor with and without cooling water injection. During the progression of core damage, we analyze the cooling water injection at different times and the results show that there are significant differences in the level of core damage and hydrogen production, among other variables analyzed such as maximum surface temperature, fission products released, and debris bed height.

Abstract:

Abstract:
L’étude de l’accommodation en présence d’astigmatisme permettrait d’optimiser la simulation des images<br>Vision through a progressive addition lens is a dynamic process especially in near vision when reading. The wearer is led to look into the side parts of the lens. These areas contain astigmatism, which can be particularly annoying. There are different types of progressive addition lenses that are characterized by a specific distribution of astigmatism around the periphery. The objective, in the long term, would be to allow a selection of progressive addition lenses by presenting the future wearer with simulated images for which he or she would have to give notes related to the quality of the perceived image. Using an optical calculation (i.e., convolution between an object and a point spread function), we can simulate the appearance of an image seen through an optic. The objective of this work is therefore to validate the possibility of simulating vision through a progressive addition lens and to make the link between vision quality and wearer choice. In a first step, we compared the quality of vision through adaptive optics simulating spherical and cylindrical defocus with simulated images showing the same optical defects. A difference in vision quality between 20 (i.e. spherical blur) and 35% (i.e. astigmatic blur) between simulated and optical blur was observed. The simulated blur was always greater than the optical blur. These differences were less than the clinically significant difference. In a second step, we directly used a progressive addition lens. The optical defocus tested were then spherical and cylindrical combinations corresponding to specific points of the progressive addition lens along the horizontal axis passing through the near vision optical center. We considered in the simulation of our images that the subject could accommodate. We observed that accommodation played a role when comparing the optical blur with the simulated blur. Presbyopic subjects appear to be able to produce a low level of accommodation that offsets some of the deleterious effect of astigmatism on image quality. We then set up a full-field progressive addition lens analysis device leading to the choice of a type of progressive lens by different wearers. At the same time, we measured vision quality (i.e., simulated image scoring and visual acuity measurement) along the horizontal axis of near vision for these same subjects. The results of the latter study showed that visual acuity is not a good test for predicting vision quality through progressive lenses; the test only worked for 65% of the subjects. On the contrary, the subjective image scoring test predicted the final design choice for 90% of the subjects. Although the statistical results obtained for the different simulated image conditions show a real difference between the real and simulated conditions, we observe that simulated images taking into account some accommodation (i.e., change of sphere in the simulation) are closer to reality. Accommodation thus seems to play an important role when astigmatism is introduced. The study of accommodation in the presence of astigmatism would make it possible to optimize the simulation of the images

Abstract:

Abstract:
The present thesis studies the representations of the idea of progress within nineteen of Jules Verne's novels, written between 1864 and 1904. It aims at demonstrating that Verne's writing and the topics favored therein constitute an account of the opinions prevailing during the second half of the XIX$ sp{ rm th}$ century. Following an examination of the changes brought by scientific discoveries and their technical applications in French society, as well as of the fears arising from the speedy material progress, it picks out the images that allow the author of the Voyages extraordinaires and the creator of the "scientific novel" to translate and transform the expressions of progress of the period. Finally, the thesis aims to nuance this enthusiastic portrait, and stresses the fact that warnings and ambivalences towards technical progress are not absent from a work that prefers to instruments giving access to progress a moral spirit guiding them.

In this study was applied the nom-parametric approach of the data envelopment analysis in analyzing the productivity changes, technological progress, and the changes in efficiency of the artisanal fishing production in the Cabo Verde islands, over the period from 1990 to 1999. Using the panel data available in the statistical bulletins of the Instituto Nacional de Desenvolvimento das Pescas (INDP), an intertemporal analysis of the technical efficiency in the islands was developed, by using the intertemporal approach of the panel data and the window analysis approach. Upon the intertemporal approach of the panel data, the existence of scale inefficiency and the nature of the returns to scale were analyzed, while the sensibility, the stability, and the tendency of the efficiency scores estimated in each island over the period were analyzed by the window analysis approach. In analyzing the total factor productivity, the Malmquist productivity index was used and calculated by the distance functions estimated by the nom-parametric approach of the data envelopment analysis, that allowed for the decomposition of these factors into both efficiency and technological changes. The results of the analysis showed that there were significant differences in the level of technical efficiency in the artisanal fishing production among the islands, over the analyzed period. The islands São Vicente and Santiago were the most efficient ones during the period, whereas Boa Vista island was the most inefficient one. It was verified that great part of the islands operates with inefficiency of scale due to the presence of increasing returns to scale. These results point out the efficiency levels might be improved through increases in the levels of the production factors in these islands (increase in the production scale). However, in some islands, mainly São Vicente, São Nicolau, Sal, Santiago, and Brava, this policy should be cautiously applied, since they showed decreasing returns to scale at some period of the analysis, which may be interpreted, in a certain way, as an indicator of decline in the stock/availability of fisheries resources. The results present signs that the production of the semi- industrial boats might be affecting the sustainment of the fisheries resource stocks in some islands where these boats operate. According to results of the analysis accomplished by the window analysis technique, some islands demonstrated a growth tendency in the efficiency scores over the period, as well as in a great part of them the efficiency scores were stable and not very sensitive to changes in the units that formed the efficient reference frontier for analysis. The analysis of the total factor productivity, by the Malmquist productivity index, demonstrated that the total factor productivity increased during the period, which was mainly determined by the occurrence of technological progress in the period. There is high potential for increase in the artisanal fishing production, and the islands Santiago and São Vicente should serve as benchmark to the inefficient ones. The policies for promotion of the sector should be differentiated among the islands, since there are differences in returns to scale, efficiency, and technological progress.<br>Dissertação importada do Alexandria

Abstract:
Chapter 3 addresses the hitherto neglected political dimension of Anne’s first royal progress to Oxford and the West Country. The contention of this chapter is that the sophisticated rhetorical displays and entertainments associated with Elizabethan progresses persisted into the eighteenth century. By unpicking the partisan messages embedded into entertainments and verse addresses performed to Anne on her first progress, the chapter demonstrates how royal hosts attempted to guide the queen and government on policy matters. But they also hoped to garner patronage from prominent local and national politicians. Anne also used the progress as an opportunity to revive older modes of sacral monarchy.

Abstract:
This book marks out a modernist counter-tradition. The book proceeds from an anachronism common to Italian- and English-language literature and cinema: a fascination with outmoded, paradigmatically pre-modern educational forms that persists long after they are displaced in modernizing, reform-minded pedagogical theories. Old Schools shows that these old-school teaching techniques organize key works by Walter Pater, Giovanni Pascoli, James Joyce, Pier Paolo Pasolini, and Glauber Rocha. All of these figures oppose ideologies of progress by returning to and creatively reimagining the Latin class long since left behind by progressive educators. Across the political spectrum, advocates of progressive education, from Jean-Jacques Rousseau to John Dewey and Giovanni Gentile, had targeted Latin in particular. The dead language—taught through time-tested techniques including memorization, recitation, copying out, and other forms of repetition and recall—needed to be updated or eliminated, reformers argued, so that students could breathe free and become modern, achieving a break with convention and constraint. By contrast, the works that Old Schools considers valorize instruction’s outmoded techniques, even at their most cumbersome and conventional. Like the Latin class to which they return, these works produce constraints that feel limiting but that, by virtue of that very limitation, invite valuable resistance. As they turn grammar drills into verse and repetitious lectures into voiceovers, they find unlikely resources for creativity and critique in the very practices that progressive reformers sought to clear away.

Abstract:
This chapter argues for renewed recognition of Black Chicago Renaissance writer Frank Marshall Davis, whose first collection of poetry, Black Man’s Verse (1935), was widely celebrated for its innovative adaptations of African American vernacular forms, including the blues and jazz. Situating Davis within recent scholarly reassessment of the Black Chicago Renaissance, this chapter demonstrates how Davis’s jazz writing, as a journalist, critic, and poet, exemplifies the global orientation of the Black Chicago Renaissance that is becoming increasingly recognized. Davis’s jazz writing is especially important, for the subsequent Black Arts generation as well as for his Popular Front contemporaries, not only because of his development of inventive vernacular forms, but also because of his insistence on the African roots of African American music. In articulating how African musical principles inform jazz, Davis also underscored the international and interracial importance of jazz for black and working-class social progress.

Abstract:
Chapter Four moves beyond the boundaries of the comparative linguistic tradition to explore Richard Wagner’s extraordinarily influential, poetico-musical “realization” of the philological fantasy about Germanic verse origins, as described in Chapter Three. This chapter argues that Wagner’s dramatic project in the Ring cycle, which was inspired by his intense engagement with the language theories of Jacob Grimm, must be understood as an attempt to harness the rhythms of ancient alliterative verse to an all-encompassing, neo-Pythagorean model of cosmic-acoustic accord, such that the meter of his own, mid-19th century alliterations—when united with the harmonic modulations of his music—merges with the “meter” of the world spirit progressing through history.

Abstract:
This chapter presents three common strategies that account for the structures of Queen’s songs: conventional templates (such as AABA or Verse-Chorus), conventional templates with added material (such as Verse-Chorus with two bridge sections), and episodic (irregular sequence of multiple sections). These types of forms appear in relatively equal measure and with relative consistency across Queen’s output. Beyond these strategies, it is argued that Queen’s approach to form may be understood as balancing ‘artistic’ and ‘craft’ techniques, drawing on Covach’s analysis of The Beatles. Songs with simple structures are often imbued with modulations or other rich harmonic devices; songs with more complex structures still retain a strong sense of tonal security and phrase regularity. Queen is thus positioned in the middle of pop and progressive compositional aesthetics from the 1970s.

Abstract:
Chapter 3 investigates the most popular genre of Victorian Scottish poetry, nostalgic pastoral in a sentimental mode. It argues that this kind of poetry should not be dismissed, because it intervenes in different ways in politicized arguments about land ownership and access. The chapter is divided into three subsections. The first shows how pastoral poetry in the newspaper press intervened directly in rights of way debates. Scotland experienced a number of significant legal cases in the nineteenth century over rights of way, and these were usually couched in terms of the poor versus the wealthy landowner or aristocrat. It shows that poetry played an important role in represented and commenting on these cases. The second section follows the debate about agricultural improvement in Victorian Scotland, and considers both poems that reject modern ‘improvements’ (e.g. the reclamation of wild land through draining and new agricultural techniques), and those that support it. The final part of the chapter turns to the ways in which emigrant poets represented Scotland’s landscape and figured the same questions about change, progress (or lack of), and land rights from positions outside Scotland.

Abstract:
This chapter reviews scholarship on the Scientific Revolution in Scotland. A long-ignored manuscript of astronomical, mathematical, and natural philosophical verse and prose commentary provides an invaluable opportunity to explore many of the aspects that have drawn the attention of revisionist studies. A preliminary evaluation of the manuscript’s form, content, and production-context provides the opportunity to gain a far more nuanced understanding of the progress of intellectual change during the long Scientific Revolution as literary, philosophical, and scientific dialectic forged new paths. The manuscript highlights that, contrary to the prevailing scholarly view, not only were the new methodological approaches and phenomenological theories of the Scientific Revolution being taught and debated in early modern Scotland; key educationalists within the realm from the time of Copernicus made significant contributions to scientific progress.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Aim/Purpose: [This Proceedings paper was revised and published in the 2018 issue of the journal Issues in Informing Science and Information Technology, Volume 15] The proposed Personal Knowledge Management (PKM) for Empowerment (PKM4E) Framework expands on the notions of the Ignorance Map and Matrix for further supporting the educational concept of a PKM system-in-progress. Background: The accelerating information abundance is depleting the very attention our cognitive capabilities are able to master, one key cause of individual and collective opportunity divides. Support is urgently needed to benefit Knowledge Workers independent of space (developed/developing countries), time (study or career phase), discipline (natural or social science), or role (student, professional, leader). Methodology: The Design Science Research (DSR) project introducing the novel PKM System (PKMS) aims to support a scenario of a ‘Decentralizing KM Revolution’ giving more power and autonomy to individuals and self-organized groups. Contribution: The portrayal of potential better solutions cannot be accommodated by one-dimensional linear text alone but necessitates the utilization of visuals, charts, and blueprints for the concept as well as the use of colors, icons, and catchy acronyms to successfully inform a diverse portfolio of audiences and potential beneficiaries. Findings: see Recommendation for Researchers Recommendations for Practitioners: The PKM4E learning cycles and workflows apply ‘cumulative synthesis’, a concept which convincingly couples the activities of researchers and entrepreneurs, and assists users to advance their capability endowments via applied learning. Recommendation for Researchers: In substituting document-centric with meme-based knowledge bases, the PKMS approach merges distinctive voluntarily shared knowledge objects/assets of diverse disciplines into a single unified digital knowledge repository and provides the means for advancing current metrics and reputation systems. Impact on Society: The PKMS features provide the means to tackle the widening opportunity divides by affording knowledge workers with continuous life-long support from trainee, student, novice, or mentee towards professional, expert, mentor, or leader. Future Research: After completing the test phase of the PKMS prototype, its transformation into a viable PKM system and cloud-based server based on a rapid development platform and a noSQL-database is estimated to take 12 months.

Abstract:
Aim/Purpose: In our previous paper, we have proposed a methodology to deliver an applied business course to the multicultural audience having in mind embedding into the course cultural sensitivity and create a safe place for multicultural students to use own cultural metaphors in a learning place. We have proposed a fusion of ancient storytelling tradition creating an overall context for the teaching process and specific use of rich picture coming from Soft System Methodology (SSM). The used teaching approach is promising and brings the required results. However, the proposed method, to be fully effective requires a computerized supporting tool in a form of sophisticated graphical editor/presentation application displaying in real-time case study progress along with the in-class discussion. This tool is a central topic for this paper. Background: The existing tools like for example MS PowerPoint, MS Visio, or Prezi used by us so far cannot be used for our purpose as the interactive image update distract the students. The MS PowerPoint and Prezi require visible mode switching between design mode (edit) and presentation mode. Whereas MS Visio editing is too slow for our purposes. This switching or editing time create a meaningful distraction during the discussion. Methodology: As a solution for the above problem, the authors work on the development of own specialized tool using open source software Blender 3D (http://blender.org) along with Python. The code will be released to open source domain to enable further co-operation with other researchers. Contribution: The described effort, if successful, should create a new presentation tool allowing among the other features, seamless in-class knowledge transfer and in the future will enable the way for gamification of case studies. Impact on Society: A definite improvement of teaching quality in applied business (however, not limited to) with further possibility to extend to deliver courses e.g. for company’s executives. The tool and methodology allow embedding cultural sensitivity into the learning process and will have an impact on digital inclusiveness. Future Research: The tool enables possibility for further analysis of the business situation by artificial intelligence interface. In fact, a whole interactive process of reaching the case conclusion may be observed (allowing collecting analytics and insights on teacher and student’s behavior and performance).

Abstract:
Aim/Purpose: [This Proceedings paper was revised and published in the 2018 issue of the Interdisciplinary Journal of e-Skills and Lifelong Learning, Volume 14] This presentation presents the preliminary findings of a survey that sought to examine the technology uses, needs, interests, career goals, and professional expectations of Generation Z college students Background: Students entering college today are part of Generation Z born in the late 90’s through 2016 making the oldest among them 20 or so years old. They already outnumber millennials and are the first true digital natives being born during the age of smart phone. They are the first generation that used a tablet before they could ride a bike, the first to have childhood friends that they engaged with electronically, and the first to have their baby photos and youthful milestones shared on social media. Their minds, relationships, learning preferences, emotional health, sense of self, have all been inexplicably shaped by constant exposure to screens and networked digital technologies, which the research shows in high doses changes the neural circuitry of developing brains, leading to shorter attention spans, stunted social skills and a heightened ability to multitask Methodology: In the fall of 2017 an online student perception survey was administered to students enrolled at a mid-Atlantic minority serving institution. The survey included a combination of dichotomous, Likert-scaled, and ranking questions. The survey was administered to students following completion of core computer concepts courses and explored their technology backgrounds, skills, perceived computing self-efficacy, and the role they predict technology will play in their future career Contribution: As Generation Z descends on college campuses, with their technology dominated backgrounds and different communications, learning, and social preferences, it is important to better understand this generation whose needs and expectations will help shape the future of higher education. Additionally, this study also provides research on a population (first-generation minority college students) that is expanding in numbers in higher education and that the literature, reports is impacted negatively by the digital divide and educational inequalities. This paper is timely and relevant and helps to extend our understanding of Generation Z. Findings: The findings show that Generation Z learners enjoy computer classes, feel that using computers comes easy to them; are experts in the use of social media, mobile operating systems, using a smart phone, searching the Web, and email. They reported that they want to be more technologically literate, want to be more skilled in computer software applications, and are interested in learning about cyber security. In terms of the future, most also believe that their career will require them to analyze information to inform decision making. Additionally, most believe that information security will be important to their future career. Finally, results affirmed that college computing courses remain important and that college students recognize that technology will play an important role in their career and that employers want to see job applications with strong technology skills. Recommendations for Practitioners: Generation Z learners enrolled in higher education need, and want, a wide range of technology courses available to them in order to help them meet the rapidly evolving demands of tomorrow’s workplace. Students overwhelmingly see the value in enhancing their technology skills especially in such areas as computer software applications, information management, and cyber security. Recommendation for Researchers: Institutions of higher education should invest in thorough and ongoing examinations of the information and technology literacy skills, needs, and perceptions of students. Impact on Society: Understanding the interests and needs of Generation Z learners is imperative to the future of higher education. Future Research: This survey is a work in progress that is part of a pilot study that is being used to help guide a much more sizable examination of Generation Z learners.

Abstract:
Fuel cells have been known theoretically for more than a century. Recently conceived high temperature fuel cells, by guaranteeing higher degrees of efficiencies and greater fuel flexibility, have the potential to yield a radical change in the future of distributed electricity market promising high efficient and ultra-clean power generation. In the last years progress has been so relevant that they seem to be on the verge of commercialization. All plants commissioned seem to consider the parallel flow solution i.e. in which primary fuel flow splits to enter all the stacks that works with nominally equal operational parameters. The present work analysed the possibility of disposing stacks in an array, thus leading to a combination of series and parallel fluid dynamic connection so that one cell anode may have as input the exhaust of another cell anode. The aim is to allow some cells to work with low utilization factors and therefore at greater voltages. Different solutions have been analysed with a tool obtained from the integration of a proprietary code for cells simulation, with Aspen+ flowsheet. Code predictions of cells performances have been validated by experimental campaigns [Lunghi and Burzacca 2002]. The results showed that a noticeable performance increase can be obtained with the proposed configuration without any significant complication in the process. The authors believe that this should be considered as a very interesting research field and strongly encourage participation of the scientific community.

In ASME 2016 35th International Conference on Ocean, Offshore and Arctic Engineering. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/omae2016-54043.

Abstract:
The last couple of decades have observed an increasing interest in development of wave energy conversion technology for both research and commercial purposes. Though slow due to several reasons, the technology shows an evident progress. Because of the oil crisis facing the energy sector in particular, wave energy is currently seen as a good alternative to fossil fuel based power generation. This has marked its footprints on rising industrial ventures in wave energy based power generation and the search for new devices is gearing up. Among the latest invented models, point wave energy converters are attractive and low investment options. These devices are much smaller than the traditional oscillating water column devices and have good performance when combined in arrays of devices, thus placing the technology in the center of industrial and academic research. This article reports the study conducted to understand the mechanics of the energy exchange in a single-body point wave energy converter device model Cape Verde, patented by the Norwegian company Euro Wave Energy. Furthermore, the article intends to give a practical solution for the design of the anchoring problem in the device. In general, the article attempts to present two completely different objectives: an academic part focusing on understanding the wave energy conversion mechanics, and the industrial development part that attempts to find a practical solution for a particular part of the device. The first step involves establishing a model that describes the motion and potential of absorbance of a conic single-body absorber. The anchor system was designed in accordance with standards provided by Det Norske Veritas, the Norwegian regulatory framework. A quasi-static method is used to calculate the load that the absorber would suffer and a pulley and cable system is proposed to drive these loads to the anchor system. After a review of the different solutions offered for offshore facilities at the present time, the model of a suction anchor is chosen. As design verification through physical testing of prototypes of conversion devices is demanding and costly, various simulation tools are appearing in the field. The application range of some of these different simulation tools has been evaluated and reported in this article.
